    I was raised Christian and conservative and homeschooled and my wife and I caught one of my brothers molesting one of my daughters. We reported it immediately to authorities and my family cut us off. The case has still yet to go to trial. It’s been 4 years. But I have no regrets. I would’ve done it again even if I had known what would’ve happened. We must speak out and we must protect our children, no matter the cost.

      There is a definite arrogance in the fundie community believing they are immune from such things or can cure everything with prayer. Josh always had a creepiness that the other brothers didn’t. His children will now suffer greatly. It’s interesting that the Duggar girls who have married (even other fundamentalists) are probably more protected than women that marry into the family.

      It’s because she has had it drummed into her that she gets married has children as many as God wants you to have and it’s her failings that has caused Josh to do these things. She has had no life skills outside of family. Has t worked so no means of bringing money into the house. It’s really sad!!

      Have you seen what the sketchier reports have said about her beliefs surrounding the arrest? It’s being said she truly believes this was a “political attack” and had Trump been president it wouldn’t have occurred. Normally I think reports from trash media are BS but seriously think this time they may be right...

      I think part of it is religion, but part is fear. The Duggars financially support her. If she leaves, she's on her own with seven kids, no education and no work experience. Her parents are poor and live in a single-wide trailer. She probably feels staying put is her only option.

      @helenlesczynski3989 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      I too always thought this. Those older girls didn’t ask to be parents, yet the babies at some point were always assigned to them for care so the mom could have another. It was abusive and gross.

    • @harrynac6017
      @harrynac6017 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I'm appalled how raising your daughters to be happily available to their future husbands is not a crime. The girls are set up to be potentially abused in the future and can only hope (sorry...pray) to get a husband that will not take advantage of the situation. Specially because a lot of those marriages seems to be arranged, and the men know their wives should be happily available. And being homeschooled doesn't give them much of an opportunity to see that things can be different. The parents get the freedom to take the freedom of the kids it seems.

    I grew up in the church that tried to "rehabilitate" Duggar through prayer and physical labor. I left when I was in my teens, long before this. The church declared Josh cured as he managed not to reoffend during his stay. He was housed with adult men and not given access to anything other than a Bible and his "character workbook." All his waking hours were spent in physical labor or prayer. How much trouble could he get into in that environment? Plus, the church and "addictions ministry" are run by a pastor who claims to have a PhD, but doesn't. What he has is a Messiah Complex. Think Jim Jones with less drugs.

      Had the Duggars made a bigger deal of the situation their daughters could have been publicly humiliated and may have even been made to testify against their own brother in court. That’s pretty traumatizing as well for really young girls so I can understand why they chose to remove Josh from the home on their own, sending him away to wherever they sent him, and giving him his own room etc...
      If JB and Michelle really didn’t care they would have told no one but they did seek help from their Church and even another officer. I don’t think they did everything right but it’s more-so due to their ignorance then any malicious intent. They are human after all.

    As a survivor of csa by my biological father, I love to see abusers go to jail. As they should. As they only see there victims as tools for there own sexual gratification. With disregard to them as a person. In a way, its almost not even personal. As victims are often picked out of accses. I hope the cycle of abuse can be stoped in that family. I wish the survivors out there all the best. The statutes for sexual crimes regarding children, should not have a run out. In my country, the statute is life long. As, research has shown, it can take decades for survivors to come to grip with the abuse, and be mentaly healthy enought to come forward. I came forward when I was 5, and still CPS and the police had trouble trying to prosses my case. The justice system is set up to deal with offendrs, not victims. One of the reasons justice is so hard to fight for. I'm now 36. And still with concreate evidence, trying to get justice. For myself, and other victims.

Jill and her husband regularly go to family functions and she said they are "healing" from all the things that happened with Josh.

      I know the Duggars personally and have for not quite 40 years. They are fine people that have raised some of the most humble and upstanding people I've ever known. Every family has disagreements between each other and the Duggars always work out anything that could potentially become a problem. I've watched over the years as their kids have grown up and their kids are a joy to be around. I live right down the road from them and they have also been very good neighbors. People are always always warning children about “stranger danger” yet sadly the largest percentage of predators are someone known to the child. It’s very important to teach children about their right to bodily autonomy regardless of who they are with. This is why I will never force my child to hug or kiss someone, even a family member (you can still teach them to be polite while maintaining appropriate boundaries). By doing this a child learns that it is okay to say NO to physical contact or an activity if it makes them feel uncomfortable, even when it’s an adult or someone in authority. Keeping non judgemental open dialogue and communication is also important as it helps to foster a loving nurturing relationship as well as hopefully making them less vulnerable to seeking attention elsewhere. Unfortunately predators are very good at identifying children who are needy or isolated and will often exploit a child’s natural desire for attention and love for nefarious intentions.

    There should be no statute of limitations for child molestation! Especially when you consider how difficult it is for victims to come forward and confront their abuser. I have seen 5 year statute get in the way of prosecution in state of KS. It was the date of act until reported. Very young child told parents for first time 5 years later and they could not determine exact date of crime 5 years earlier so nothing at all was done. However young child was taken in room and taped by law enforcement while questioned. That tape locked and sealed. Parent were never allowed to see tape or know details just in case offender ever went to trial on another unrelated charge. Not sure if law/statute still same. Know another case where kids were abducted for 5 years by noncustodial parent also in state of KS. Kids were found because their faces appeared on milk carton. Noncustodial parent did not go to jail and was able to have the kids unsupervised as if nothing had happened. While custodial parent did not have kids for 5 years (2/3 when abducted and 7/8 when found). The kids were lied to and told custodial parent had died, did not want them, etc. Those kids were robbed of their childhood as well as custodial parent as bond was never the same. Millions of devastating stories that will never find their way to justice. Heart breaking and gut-wrenching.

      I did some research on this subject because I was molested by a few different men as a child and wanted to understand why this happens.
      While environment can play a role in someone developing pedophilia tendencies, they have found that these types of people have "crossed wires" in their brains. To put it simply, when one of these people looks at a child, instead of sending signals to the part of the brain that controls paternal/maternal feelings, it instead sends signals to the part of the brain that's responsible for sexuality. Most of them have no control over it and many of them understand that there's something wrong with them and never go on to act on these feelings. Another odd finding is that people who are left-handed are more prone to pedophilia than right-handed people.
      I think it's great that they're doing this type of research. I believe it will lead to finding a cure. Castration isn't going to stop them from offending if it's a problem within the brain.

They did try to minimize & downplay the severity of the allegations for the sake of the squeaky clean image they want the family to have. However, since this is a pattern with him & technically he is a grown man with six children of his own...I think they may have to disown him in a way. I believe his parents are very image-obsessed and they don't want to tarnish their small town wholesome conservative values that they heavily imbued on the show. His dad handed him a book that he was supposed to read to talk about the night of their wedding since supposedly they had not been together sexually. What Josh said to his dad when he got that book gave me chills to my bone… He said “so I’m gonna have a real live working model after tomorrow!” That disturbed me so much… It showed me in that moment that she was a play thing to him not a human being. His dad took note of that statement as well and became visibly uncomfortable. I knew this was going to happen or something like it. Because I saw in that moment that he was not right in the head. I think the doc *really* hit the nail on the head when he talked about these parents separating the offender from the offense. These are people who devoutly categorize everything in terms of "sin" vs. "virtue." So it's likely incredibly easy for them to simply "hate the sin and love the sinner," without ever acknowledging that the sin and the sinner are inextricably intertwined. This gives them the ability to see their son as a wonderful, godly, moral person who was somehow contaminated by "sin," but that once he's born again (again!) the sin will magically disappear, leaving only a perfectly godly, moral person. They seem to think that forgiving him will also magically erase the trauma suffered by the victims, and that a failure to forgive him is, in their minds, a sin almost comparable to the abuse they endured.
    But that's not how it works, unfortunately. And so, tragically, multiple young girls had to pay for this lack of insight and parenting skills with the unspeakably traumatic loss of their innocence at the hands of a predatory family member, who by all rights should have been one of the people they could trust most.
    I can only hope that now, finally, the law will step in and prevent him from being around potential victims ever again. Because it seems quite clear that this family cannot be counted on, ever, to protect their most vulnerable and innocent children from abuse, nor can they be counted on to ever actually take workable steps to protect those potential victims.

    Dr. Todd..Can you do a session about ultra religious groups and the suppression of children’s sexuality? Being raised in an environment that denies that we are sexual beings and shamed for having these feelings is extremely damaging to a child’s psyche. It’s no surprise that Duggar has inappropriate sexual desires, and he shares this issue with numerous religious “men of God “throughout the world. I will take a giant leap here and state from my observation of the Duggar family...Josh’s malformed thinking is the result of being raised in this rigid family system that looks at sex as a sinful act .
