I grew up with a very abusive single mother. Our family was secretive and extremely religious. The first time I thought of suicide I was 9. There was no hope that anything would get better, I tied my rainbow jump rope around my neck and stood on my foot board tying the other end around my fan. I remember standing there sobbing as I contemplated jumping off. I knew I would go to Hell but Hell in my mind could not be worse. I lost courage and hated myself for it. I suffered years more and would self harm secretly. My grandparent confronted me one day when I was maybe 14, asked what was wrong. I told them I couldn't take anymore from my mother and broke down. I felt a weight lifted and just knew that the abuse would finally be dealt with. My grandma washed my face made me cup of coffee and sent me back home. She told me that she had known my mother was difficult and not nice and she suspected she abused drugs (which I confirmed she did) she told me she was still my mother and that I was to love her and do my best to not make her so angry. She explained things like this shouldn't be talked about because others wouldn't understand. That weight came back 1,000 times heavier because I knew then I was trapped no matter who found out. Teachers at school knew and a pastor at church knew. They said to pray for her. She lost her temper again and as usual I was the target. That night I couldn't sleep, I was in pain and just upset. I crept into the kitchen and took out a large kitchen knife and walked into her bedroom. I just watched her sleep thinking of ending it all. I knew I'd go to jail but I knew my little sister would be free at least. I didn't do it, she stirred and rolled over and I got scared and left. I do not tell that story because it sounds like I'm crazy or evil. Neither are true, when you're abused and nobody seems to care then you feel hopeless and like there is no way out. I don't expect many people to understand but I do try to keep an open mind when hearing stories like this one. I would never have thought about killing my mother had I not grew up the way I did and I've never committed any crime other than a speeding ticket. It's hard to understand why she killed both parents without her talking. Maybe there was abuse that nobody knows about? Maybe she's not ready to talk about it. I got out of that situation and got help, I'm in an infinitely better place and am thankful I didn't kill my mother. She's no longer in my life and my sister doesn't contact her either.

I’m sorry you went through this but there are cases of children with happy families killing their parents and even their siblings. Some children are ( pre diagnosed) narcissists. Some do it for forbidden relationships, others want money they feel they deserve , some want freedom, and some are about to get caught in so many lies they think the solution is killing their families. Not all are abused. There aris definitely cases where children are abused and lash out and there are just as many where the child just simply wanted to kill.
@Ricky Anthony unfortunately you are correct. The abuser lashes out even more at their victim when they find out they told people. This in turn causes the child to never tell bc they can’t get away on their own and will only face more abuse! It’s a vicious cycle.

I really appreciate you pointing out that the whole “not behaving as expected” in a given situation is really ridiculous. People show different emotions in given situations and police officers and detectives are not trained to make these decisions.
same. im autistic and never act like im expected. i remember laughing when other kids got in trouble when i was little, even tho i genuinely felt really bad for them and i hated that i kept smiling. i also have depression, and act like a super happy, goofy person all the time. i seem even happier when im worse, bc i overcompensate. i also act guilty when im not bc i was emotionally abused as a kid and im still paranoid about being accused of things. emotions just arent that simple. we should definitely have therapists and other mental health professionals involved in court cases.
Agree. Lindy Chamberlain was accused of killing her baby on a camping trip due to her demeanor afterwards. It was actually taken by a Dingo ,it's playsuit found in a cave used by the dogs .

It was not just the police that noticed it but family ( Alan was my maternal uncle) She blankly stared at their posters for the memorial and then when she thought she was being watch she would begin crying. This was more then a one time occurrence where she put on a face or act when she was being watched. She wasn't arrested till almost Halloween. Family members were with her for all of it because she was a minor. While I would have been wary about it too, but I can assure you it was a consensus among the entire family
I can only agree to an extent. There is a range of expected behaviours to a major traumatic event like your parents being killed in your house - no, not everyone would react the same, and we do not know how we ourselves would react, but I find the notion that one’s reactions should not or could not be damning in any official way to be rather dubious. The real issue would be to let the reactions be the deciding factor. Not at all. But I don’t think it’s reasonable or helpful to not take reactions into consideration whatsoever in assessing guilt or innocence.

As a teenager, I would NOT have been "traumatized" if my parents had been killed at all. I think there are many people who had abusive parents who would have been dancing in joy if their parents were killed.

Kentucky Mama “after all you went thru” okay, first of all, the reason they had to go through anything was because of a person/people that was meant to bring care to them.. how can you not be furious and want something bad to happen to them in return for all of the hurt and permanent mental, and possibly physical, issues that will most likely make life that much harder for them. imagine if that care giver just got away with it all and got no punishment. i personally can’t imagine that, but i’ve been through it myself, which i’m guessing you haven’t so i have a much different point of view than yourself. if i came across aggressive in any way here i apologise. it just really irritates me when someone suggests that i shouldn’t be angry or want some sort of punishment for the people that have hurt me and others🤷♀️

There is a documentary called I Shot My Parents : The Nathan Brooks Story and it tells the story of a young man who shot his Mom and Dad. They survived. The psychiatrist at the juvenile facility where he was placed says that depression shows up as anger in adolescents. I know it did for me. This is another sign to watch kids and get them therapy and sometimes medicine if they are showing signs of depression.

@Marten Dekker ok then I too wasn't depressed when in had all that teenage rage and despair and suicidal ideation and aod abuse. It wasn't real healing wither because it was untreated and it got a WHOLE LOT WORSE. Didn't physical harm my family though . Nope.

I wouldve answered the same because in my mind I would be thinking "I know what they are getting at, this is ridiculous and we are wasting time" so I would've just jumped the gun.

I 'm sure they asked her in an accusatory tone. Just like a cop berating a suspect. They will say anything or confess to anything just to make the abuse stop. I just got out of a narcissistic abusive relationship (Literally 6 hours ago) and that's exactly what my ex did. He would overpower me and scream at me until I validated him in some way even if it was false.

Her mother deserved it. That’s merely my opinion. It’s just my emotional response after seeing the documentary, “Mommy Dead and Dearest”. Aside from the lying about everything; Gypsy Rose Blanchard was subjected to torture via all the unnecessary medical tests, treatments, and medication. Münchhausen By Proxy really makes my blood run cold. It’s terrifying and so sad that this happens to children and other people who can’t defend themselves.
In Brazil we have one case, Suzane Von Richthofen. She was dating a criminal, that kind of guy that commits petty crimes, smoke pot and such. She was rich, her parents forbade it. Then she set up for her boyfriend to invade the house and kill her parents. She would use her parents wealth to live with this guy. They went to jail pretty fast, her boyfriend, that was such a love in her life, turned against her and tried to pin everything on her, and so on.

That sort of crime happens a lot it seems... It's intensely scary everytime a teenage girl brings home an adult lowlife as her boyfriend... You can't help but look at the cases like that.

I've always found crimes committed by children/adolescents fascinating. This video reminded me of a case I haven't thought about in years. Do you recall the case in which Alex and Derek King killed their father?
I would really love to hear your take on that one, especially given that they were influenced by an adult male family friend who was abusing Alex. I think a delve into the psychology involved there would be really interesting.

When we understand something, we can better prevent the tragedy in the future. Also, if you want to be understood, you might test out capital letters and punctuation. They are your friends.

There was a kid from my town that killed his parents about a year ago. He was adopted. Highly respected professionals that really tried to help the kid. Very sad.

I expect our son to come for me when he gets out of prison. He has mental disorders and has, I think, especially resented me as the one who took him from his “real” mom. My husband doesn’t understand this, but female friends and relatives do; some have confessed to being afraid of our son.

I knew three sisters of a very nice family who were very
similar and were close,
When their mom passed, their behavior was really different,
One of them in the service was crying her head off,
one of them was all quiet as if she was shocked
and the other one was talking nonstop, which was her normal habit.
They were all sad and stressed, there was no crime or murder
but they reacted so differently.
Your voice is sooo calming... I love your channel and please don't be offended, but your voice helps me relax and fall asleep (I sometimes struggle with anxiety causing insomnia - diagnosed and treated, currently off medication and managing it with self care more than anything, this pandemic is a bit of a test for everyone who ever had anxiety I think). I always watch back the episode I fall asleep to, so I don't miss anything. Still kind of amazing how your voice makes me fall asleep despide your content being about crimes more than anything.

I remember being 8 and planning to kill my parents with an axe... but was too terrified of jail to do it.
Can totally relate to how some abused kids grow up thinking they have no other way out but to kill their abusers. Especially when they are your parents, the people who control your world since day one. When all they end up doing is training and brainwashing you since birth, painting a false picture of the world so that you can't tell left from right, good luck suddenly going off your own way and building your own life like a responsible adult! My mother had actual plans to buy me a house in our country town so that I would never leave her and she could retire there when she was older, and (of course) I would be charged of taking care of her until her death. She also was hoping for me to get accidentally knocked up at 21 because she was desperate to be a grandmother... even though she did not want me having a bf, or friends or to go out and socialize with anyone.... aaaaand that she kept reminding me that love did not exist and no men would ever love me. She ALSO wanted me to take my own life and would encourage me to do it however.... so I'm not sure WHAT she wanted in the end because everything she wanted of me contradicted every other thing!

As a child, I use to daydream about killing my father. I wanted to do what Lizzie Borden did. Wait for him to take a nap on the coach, then get the axe.... Didn't shed a tear when he passed... the only memories of him are not good ones.
I'm so sorry this happened to you. It's betrayal of the worst kind. My life could easily have gone that way. My father tried to make me his mistress and my mother didn't try to stop him. I just finally got my driver's license at 42 years old. Still so much fear to overcome. I will never understand how parents can give their child less than the best possible chance they can have to be independent and responsible adults. It's pure selfishness and, in a way, another kind of theft of a life.

I've always thought the cop[s] that grabbed their garbage with the robe and gloves before the trash truck that was on the street could get to them was the thing that really locked this case. Hearing people describe 'mourning' behaviour as odd or weird always kinda perplexes me; even if I THINK I'd react differently, we're all going to handle that situation in our own way.
Reminds me of the Darlie Routier case where, and I'm not convinced one way or another with her guilt, she was criticized for having a mini / familial birthday party for one of her boys at his grave. That's totally something I could see myself doing, not wanting to forget their birthday and while it may be too soon.. it could help with grieving and healing process. Which, her case would be interesting to hear your take on; not sure if you have but I'm about to check your back log of videos now!

Diet Coke Head I believe it’s because when the parents try to keep the daughter from seeing the boyfriend, it’s the final straw in an already fractious parent/child relationship. The boyfriend provides a refuge from her unhappy home life, so her relationship with him becomes paramount.
There was another case like this in 2006 in Canada (Alberta) where a 12 year old girl and her 27 year old boyfriend killed the girls parents and her 8 year old brother. The parents did not approve of the relationship...so a very similar motive. I believe they have both been released now. Our laws in Canada are not that strict.
This also reminds me of that creepy kid that Dr Phil had on his show once. His name was Zachery Davis and he killed his mother with a sledge hammer. He was such an odd character, he almost seemed possessed. Dr Grande, would you consider doing a video on that case?
I just posted about a young guy in Mackenzie who bludgeoned his.Dad with a crowbar over neglect and substance abuse. Truly a tragedy I will never understand or forget. I believe the kid came.to my.place the day he took his Dad's life. He told me his father had gotten a job in the coal mines. Then two weeks later Mackenzie is the scene of a bizarre Pericide .

Dude a 12 years old dating a 27 years old and the parents didn't approve. They OBVIOUSLY didn't approve, I don't approve, nor anyone normal would approve. This is a fetish not a relationship. 12 years old. 12.
I came across wrong at my grandma's funeral, I was the closest person to her , and while I was falling apart inside I was too worried about staying strong for my family to show it. I also was on some great antidepressants, and one of my coping mechanisms is to focus on small things that could go wrong and worry about that instead, like seating arrangements or other things, I did get up and speak and that was the only time I cracked. I wouldn't be surprised if anyone was critical of my behavior, but my grandma's caretaker came in a very low cut top and almost exposed herself, then got in a screaming match with her husband, years later that's still all anyone remembers.
I grew up in the town where this happened, I worked with Diane, she was an awesome person & so was Alan. Sarah was a spoiled child who was dating an older boy, her parents forced the end of that relationship. She killed them to get her way, she is where she belongs.

I really appreciate the approach to each case. No judgment calls, just an analysis, which makes it easier to focus on the account. I really enjoy this channel because I am not being pushed to take sides.
I got angry at both my parents at times when I was young but I would always just yell or run away from home if I was extra angry. I wouldn't want either of them to die, even in the hottest heat of my anger. In fact, I'm sad when anyone dies, even if I don't know them. I did have some instances where at least my mom tried to get a girlfriend of mine to go away. She succeeded with the first one but I got angry and ran away when she tried to banish the second one. Ironically, I ran away and ended up at a male friend's house. Nothing sexual happened but he did call my mom behind my back to let her know that I was okay. He also let me stay at his house and did a little bit to mediate a resolution between my mom and me. So if teenagers are angry with their parents, run away if you have to but at least you can always make peace and go home later once you calm down but you also don't have to do that.

Thing is if they don't understand her M.O and shes not taken responsibility for the current crimes, then they cannot actually make any type of guess regarding rehabilitation. They don't even know what triggered her to do this. The fact she has no previous record of violence does not by any means mean she's not typically violent it just opens up the avenue that until now shes not been caught for there to be a record.
Also just to touch upon the fact shes a true crime fan and tried to plan it, meaning she tried not to get caught.
This maybe rare in the case her victims were her parents but to me it suggests she has the potential to kill more people for gain, whether it be financially or emotionally.

I remember this well; there was video of her, her boyfriend (I recollect he indeed was a horse’s behind), and her nice middle class neighborhood. This case stuck with me for a long time because of its utter depravity.
I remember more details were reported back then. I’m not quite sure from what program I got this from, especially since this video says she’s never admitted any guilt; but I remember someone describing how the father was standing on the bathroom, having seen his wife’s head blown apart, then he took a shot to the chest, then - this is really awful, stay with me - as he was coughing and spitting up blood, he said “Why, Sara??” then he collapsed by the bed after a few steps. I also recall someone saying her mother had not been asleep; she was sort of sitting up/slouching, kind of like how one would do with several pillows watching TV in bed. Sara had allegedly shot her mom before her mom could even say a word.
That’s why the saga of Sara Johnson haunts me. They seemed to be normal , everyday parents. And her worthless boyfriend went on to live happily ever after. RIP The Johnsons.😥

THANK YOU for talking about how people react all kinds of different ways that others wouldn't necessarily expect to trauma! people make so many bad judgments based on that and it's so frustrating!! when I was trained as a crime victim advocate (often helping rape victims), we were warned early on and repeatedly that people react all kinds of ways to traumatic events and to not let it influence how we viewed the case or how we treated a victim. our trainer told us that the first time she had a victim who was laughing and joking around hours after she was attacked, she didn't understand until the woman burst out with "oh my god, I just can't believe I'm alive!" still laughing hysterically. which makes a lot of sense; if your brain latches on to "holy shit, I didn't get killed!!" then acting really giddy and happy makes perfect sense. I had a victim who was very clearly hypomanic after being attacked and had explained what happened to everyone, including me, like he was gossiping about a vaguely bad night out lol and not the tone you'd "expect" from someone who'd been kidnapped and held for twelve hours by a psychopath. since he was already dx'd as bipolar, he was able to relay this to the police, and thankfully they understood this and they didn't take his demeanor the wrong way. I would hate to think that his case might have been taken less seriously or not thoroughly investigated if all of us involved just judged the situation based on how he acted, since apparently the case was really strong with a lot of evidence.

Suzanne murdered her parents, but circumstances, including age (young adult vs adolescent), motive (money/pressure from lover), involvement of accomplices (if not masterminds) and psychiatric evaluation (narcissistic personality) were very different. But certainly worth a video.

I went looking for this information, and the Baron that you are talking about has the SAME NAME, EXACTLY THE SAME NAME as her father (Manfred von Richthofen), but they are not the same person. The Baron was born in 1892, and Suzane's father was born in 1953. I can't find anything saying that they are related though.

Great video! I’m a big fan of your work, dr Grande! There’s been a similar case to this one in Brazil. A teenage girl called Suzane von Richthofen, in the early 2000s. Very shocking and sad story.

It seems to me that once a person crosses that line of murder, that doing it the next time won't be so hard. If she gets out, someone may trigger her again and another murder.

The justice system is very hard on children reacting to abusive parents with violence. I think it stems from the long held belief that children are more like property or slaves than actual individuals.

David Vazquez I strongly disagree with you. Children's brain isn't fully developed and mature until 21 to 23 years old. They don't have the judgement capacity you think they do.. similar to psychotic individuals that were disconnected from reality when they committed their crime. That's why children are, and should be, treated and judged differently. It's not based on the crime they committed, it's based on the individual. It's really f*ck up that a 15 year old child gets 2 life sentences without possibility of parole..

15 Lee so her only option was to kill them? If she really wanted to she could’ve escaped, called authorities, move in with friends, etc. She chose to kill them when she had numerous of nonviolent options.

15 Lee she was intelligent enough to understand she had many choices as she was already living a double life. This can be seen as she fabricated her high school diploma, pretended to attend university, etc. just for financial support. Keep in mind she is an adult at this time, so her parents aren’t legally obligated to care for her in terms of money. So to say that she did not recognize or understand that she could’ve not plotted and gone through with murder her parents is foolish. If she wanted her parents funds so bad, she could’ve kept up her act because they were already providing for her, but she chose the violent path.
i know this case, so senseless and yes she was completely guilty of Premeditated murder. She was never abused she was a spoiled, selfish brat that wanted everything her own way no matter what.

Slupel, you got that right,my wife and I laugh about the phd we have recieved from watching true crime shows for years.We joke about knocking each other off and getting away with it because we are so learned in forensic and police investigations.It can be used by would be criminals to pick up valuable do's and dont's while committing criminal acts

My aunt locked my grandmother in a small cabin behind her house for a month, while she stole my grandmother’s money with help from a teller at a local bank.
My parents got worried because no one had heard from my grandmother in a month. We drove to my aunts and I found my grandmother. Thin and weak, we took her to a hospital where she died hours later .
My aunt committed suicide .
I always wondered what kind of abuse my aunt suffered at my grandmother’s hands . She WAS an abusive person who treated my dad like shit. He later committed suicide, too.
Abuse is a terrible thing. I have suffered all my life from physical , emotional and sexual abuse by my father . It never occurred to me to kill him, but I left home at 16 and never looked back . If I had not left he probably would have killed me . He beat me up so bad that I knew it was a possibility .
I would never discount abuse . Some of it takes a whole lifetime to recognize . I am 65 and still dealing with childhood abuse. Generational abuse . Nasty stuff.

The perricides were the result of teenager’s love, strong emotions hormone’s driven. She felt her parents were in her way to be with the boyfriend, triggering a murderous response to be with him. Some teens just run away, but Sara, wanted them gone.
I remember this crime very well, but I confess that I refreshed my memory during your assessment. Sarah had an elder brother, Matt, who wasn’t home that night. Would she have killed him, had he been there? She resented him because Mom loved him best. She pretty much resented all her blood relatives. And then there’s Bruno Santos, Sarah’s boyfriend, a dropout and drug dealer; she was 16, he was 19. Was he ever prosecuted for HIS crime, sex with a minor? I recall that his and Sarah’s DNA were found on the sheets in her parents’ bedroom; they had had sex on her parents’ bed. Wouldn’t that be further evidence of Sarah’s enmity towards her parents? She showed much more emotion when the jury convicted her than she ever showed for her murdered parents, and to this day she refuses to take responsibility for her premeditated parricide. Would Sarah be a danger to the community, were she to be paroled? Only towards her blood relatives, I submit. Especially towards Matt Johnson, her older brother. She was resentful that Matt used his insurance money on a car, a house, and his wedding. Oh yeah, he might very well be in her gunsight.
So whatever happened to Bruno, and how are her blood relatives doing today, I wonder? I don’t believe that any rehabilitation presently known to man could ever work on Sarah. She first has to admit what the overwhelming evidence makes clear: she blew her mother’s head apart, confronted her father as he was showering, and looked him in the eye as she shot him at close range right above his heart, in his lung. She’s a cold piece of work, that one. I hope she spends the rest of her life in prison. It would be nice if she were to be successfully rehabilitated, but I doubt that will ever happen.

I’ve never felt this angry in my life that I’ve ever seriously entertained the thought of killing another person or animal even... of course as a rebellious teenager I had many moments of feeling that I hated my parents, but that feeling would fade as the latest conflict would pass over... and I realise how blessed I am to have been raised in an environment where I wasn’t violently and severely abused to the point where I came to the conclusion that the physical removal of my parents was the solution... there’s far too many beautiful children in state care, foster care, homeless and alone in this world who have been traumatised by adults who didn’t deserve to have been parents or caregivers, so I can understand how a young person may snap and see parricide as a way out 😪
This is the first time I’ve heard of this case and I need to research it in-depth to both understand it and formulate my own beliefs... however, as soon as you spoke about the pink dressing gown being in the outside bin, my first thought was, “what if the brother or the boyfriend dressed in her clothes and committed the murder to frame her?” Lol as I said, I need to research this case so I have the facts and a full understanding of what happened 💓💓💓

There was another brutal case of Terry Caffey’s daughter who masterminded the brutal murders of her family over a boyfriend. She too was young with no prior incidents in her background. She however, enlisted the boyfriend and other pals to do the act. It is equally as disturbing to see the young girl go from sweet wholesome daughter to evil mastermind of murder. She was almost successful in killing the father, but he survived, barely. I am not a professional since I only have a B.A. in psychology. But, I think these type of cases should be studied for some kind of organic brain damage of the prefrontal cortex. The impulsivity, immaturity, and lack of self-control play so heavily. Also, being females makes me curious about their hormonal balance? Were they on their periods or suffering from PMS. All of this fascinates me. Thank you for all you do in coverage of these cases!
I went to school with Sarah. We were both born and raised in Blaine County. Her house was about 2 miles from ours. Definitely wasn't expecting her to do that. I still remember it very well. I always thought she was a nice girl. Which makes it even more bizarre me 🤪

My father was pretty abhorrent. I never thought about killing him, but when I was poor and sleeping in the same room with him along with my three other sisters (separate beds) I wished so badly for him to choke on his own fat faced sleep apnea. Every. Single. Night. Whenever he stopped breathing I felt a little hope, and never woke him up or bothered to see if he was okay.

At age 12, because I reported her 30 year old secret "boyfriend" to the police, my daughter fantasized obsessively about killing me, with the details somewhat preplanned. This she told me later. She received much professional help because of her other dangerous acting-out behaviors. Today she is a highly successful physician, a wonderful mother, a loving spouse and the most thoughtful, caring and empathetic of my three dear children.
My father was a head football coach in a small town when i was a very little girl- he had a player that stayed at our house for a few days because apparently his parents had abandoned him. The whole town was so worried about this kid and thinking he had the most horrible parents. Well it only took about 2 weeks before the sheriff found his parents murdered and buried in the back yard. crazy to think that this guy was staying in our home and no one suspected he could do such a thing.
There is no way oh knowing if she was abused by her parents
Usually defendants in murder trials will use this as an excuse for the killing .

@@lindaeasley5606 she didn't use it as a way to defend herself, if she confessed and accepted what she did, it would then allow her to finally talk about missing details and reasons why. Which would of helped her defense ironically. She did say she had nightmares of her parents confronting her in the way that they left this world. If those nightmares continue which they probably did, it probably got to the point that she will probably never talk because helping her is too late. Its been going on for to long. Her brain/mind making her relive that event or a form of it, is a coping mechanism, dreams/nightmares are there as a form of survival to perp you for the next day for whats to come. Poor girl thought she was finally free but just the trauma of the event had kept her in a cycle of pain and stress. The fact that her brain is telling her what she did was wrong shows that she was born a good person

if you subscribe to the "Idaho Statesmen" newspaper some of the stuff going on just south of me a few miles sets a new, lower standard. I know in the national media it's known for some off kilter groups and some weird behaviour, but man, I had no idea is was THAT strange a place. And I've been to a few places.

Hello Dr. Grande, and thanks for your insightful videos. I was wondering if you could do a segment on Joel Guy Jr., who's trial just wrapped up yesterday. He is a 28 year old man who murdered his parents on November 26, 2016. He has not admitted guilt, despite overwhelming physical evidence. He acted alone. His demeanor has been described as "no emotion", even during graphic testimony. I was hoping you could shed light on this man's mental state, as the defense provided none. Thank you!
