I feel like it should be illegal for actually underage people to be sexually assaulted in movies. They use adults to depict minors in just about every other movie and tv show, there's no reason to have actual minors playing this out.

BIG TRIGGER WARNING: YOU'RE ABOUT TO READ THE RAMBLINGS OF A CSA/SA SURVIVOR WHO ALSO MAJORS IN FILM, CW TO MENTIONS OF SA
SA depictions with teenage actors can be done properly, but THIS just ISN'T FUCKING IT. The fact I have an example of a film that does it ten times better and not only stuck with me due to how horrifying it is, helped me empathise and appreciate it, shows this can be done properly. Like you have no fucking clue how much this film angers me. Jesus christ.
Like a good depiction that comes to mind for me personally, is this: I remember watching this one holocaust film on TV with my mom (we're Jewish, she's a G2 and I'm a G3 so we do it often during holocaust remembrance days) and in one of the scenes, one of the polish children in the film ended up SAing a girl who defended the Jewish kid that lived with them, by throwing a rock at her head after an argument he had with her, causing her to fall down unconscious, and doing as he pleases with her.
The scene has been engraved into my brain so well because it was very straight forward. As soon as we see him lift her shirt up slightly to undress her bottom half, the camera immediately tilts upwards towards her face - censoring his actions - and slowly fades into the next shot, where we see her attempt to clean herself in a lake with the Jewish kid she defended. You could tell what happened simply by her traumatized face, and the concerned and sympathising expression of the Jewish kid.
Nothing graphic was shown. The act itself was never shown, like they should have. They didn't need to show anything in order for you to understand. I believe how they actually filmed this scene was by making the girl wear a pair of pants underneath the dress, the girl laid down and closed her eyes, and told the kid only to lift her dress slightly and that's it - letting the camera and editing do the rest. I HOPE that's the case, as a film student nowadays that's how I believe any sane director should do such a thing.
Case and point, you can cheat a scene like this without forcing teenage actors to do LITERAL T0RTUR3 C0RN with either adults or other teens. It's really not hard. If you can censor a murder in film and hint at it through camera movements, editing, and heavy emphasis on the aftermath, same can go for LITERALLY ANYTHING. Sometimes "hide and hint" is better than "show and tell".
Sorry for the rant, I'm just very passionate about depictions of SA in film cuz there are FAR too many films that do it wrong than those who do it right. Like, THERE IS A WAY TO DO THIS SHIT. ASK A SURVIVOR how they'd like these things to be written, if it's even that necessary for the plot of your film. In this film's case, they had NO REASON to add that scene.

    Its actually pretty realistic
When i was in elementary school i was friends with the most popular girl in school, despite my own self being bullied to no ends. she was cruel, she drank alchohol at age 13 because her mom let her. she was rude and filmed me doing stupid stuff for people to make fun of online like the vine "li-fe sa-viers" (life savers) because i was sheltered, vine was all i knew, thats what i thought was funny (they are)
We were friends purely because i was excited she payed attention to me and her for unknown reasons. We talked about many things we had in common and while we fell apart because she moved and i cut her off, Amy and Megan's relationship is actually very seeable and could be deemed real

Searching does a way better job at highlighting the dangers of being online than Megan is Missing. It tells the story of a father desperately trying to find his daughter using her computer. Won't spoil much besides that, but it delivers everything in such a raw and realistic way that it leaves you on the edge of your seat. Plus it only had an $880,000 budget so it definitely beats the argument of Megan is Missing being bad because it didn't have a big budget.
TL;DR Watch Searching, definitely underrated in terms of general noteriety

When it comes to exploitive rape scenes and shock value there was no satisfying ending or outcome. It was there just to be there. Other movies have more extended and graphic scenes but they did something with it eventually to bring the audience back into the movie. For example, I Spit on Your Grave has one of the longest and most brutal scenes of sexual assault in cinema but when the rapists get their come upons in the most grotesque ways, it's satisfying. Even if it's exploitive and horrendous, it matches. That movie isn't for everyone but MIM isn't for anyone.

Same with the Videocall horror genre. It mostly started with Unfriended and takethislolipop. Novel idea, problem was that Unfriended was in my opinion a giant Slow jumpscare fest, that left ya thinkin, "thats it?". I genuinly fell asleep halfway through due to how boring it gets sometimes. @@okay-zb5zm Riverdale is a show that was written in part by Michael Goi, the director and writer of THIS movie. Riverdale is infamous for its portrayal of teens (like 16 year old teens) being extremely vicious, erotic, and just downright immoral.
People tend to be creeped out by the fact that characters in Riverdale are written as minors yet they are minors portrayed very sexually. So this movie running a scene where an even younger character (14) gets raped somewhat visually crosses the line.
It stops being tasteless and ignorant and comes off more like scratching an itch for a fetish

@@Cheaty_Four Oof that makes it worse since (and spoilers to people)
Archie had a thing with the fucking teacher I haven't watched Riverdale in a while but the plot and scene were probably tasteless also can we not sexualize teens being with teachers? Some teens smoke weed and do the dirty and stuff but it doesn't constantly have to be shoved in on every show at every second. Most people are boring so I get they have to add some extra stuff but the more shows shove it in the more I question if these people behind the scenes are creeps irl also from what I remember Riverdale wasn't really all that good its like it cant decide what it wants to be oh also Jason Blossom apparently will come back to life or some bs I hope it's a dream sequence or something because jesus christ this show needs to pick a theme and stay with it.

I hate seeing rape in movies. You can imply it, and sometimes that’s perfectly fine. But showing it is something completely different. For me, rather than sympathizing with the victims, I start to feel like I too am violating the victim as I’m just watching them being raped. It puts me in the perspective of the rapist rather than the victim. I only feel bad because I feel as though I am participating in it. And I fucking hate it. I have walked out of so many movies because of this.

Same. If I only saw the photographs (the ones of her with her head in the board), I'd be pretty freaked out. But then you Google it and find out that it was all staged, and you think about the actor getting into the costume and the director shouting "cut" and the people fixing the lighting and talking to the actors and doing a million takes and stopping to get water and lunch and joking around with the crew, and then it's all like... eh. Just watch behind the scenes footage of any movie, and you see how film crews act during the shooting of a movie. They prank each other and make jokes and make fun of the script, and have a blast the whole time. Watch some of the video "IT Chapter 2 - Rare Behind The Scenes - Funny Bloopers" and you'll see what I mean.

@Machete Hates cryptids not really. You’d get the creeps from, for example, walking down an alleyway alone at night. You’d be SCARED is someone was following you down that alleyway.

I think it'd be really cool if you wrote/directed your own film since you have a lot of good insight on this kind of stuff. I also wanted to add that often more than never, popular horror movies often suck. I personally think it's just because it's hard to write horror, but I digress; I'm a huge sucker for Birdbox. I think it's really good because instead of the writers trying way too hard to make a "scary!!111!!" boogieman-esque character, its features are just completely unknown and I think that's what makes it so scary. Not to mention it has a really satisfying ending to tie the whole thing together.

Ngl I saw this in 2011 when I was like 13 and I used to walk home from school everyday alone in the ghetto. It scared the hell out of me back then but now it doesn’t even seem that bad. What really scared me was that it was something that *could* happen especially after my friends mom went missing and they found her dead a few weeks later
