Doing a compilation just short of 2024 because I have decided that there will be no Mini Mysteries for the rest of this year (i.e, this month). I wanna focus on newer, more interesting pieces of content throughout the month. Starting with Monday, where I'll be talking about a cannibal mannequin alien with an interesting Instagram account.
Love ya'll a ton, and thank you always for the suggestions - Mini Mysteries wouldn't happen without your contribution!

Concerning the audio from 6:00's clip, the spoken dialect is indeed Mandarin. These are all that I could hear:
    - "不要不要" (7:43) = "don't, don't", a desperate plea for something or someone to stop, or rejecting something fervently.
    - "不要,好痛" (7:48) = "don't, [it] really hurts", begging for something or someone not to continue because whatever it is is giving them immense pain.
    - "你先送我去医院"(7:56) = "take me to the hospital first", this uttered line is also the same as the words Google Translated in the title.
    - "_ _ 给你压到我这样"(8:13) = "__ crushed/pressed/squashed/compressed until I've become like this"; a little bit muddy, but the way I interpret it is like saying "Look how badly you've compressed/crushed [this part of(?)] me" or something akin to it.
    - Unfortunately, the final line is far too gibberish and muddy for me to be able to deduce.
My assumptions of what the situation could be are that it's either a parent neglecting their child after conducting severe disciplinary action, a young lady possibly going through labor pains while being ignored, or a case of domestic abuse.
(Note: Mandarin could easily be interpreted differently in several different ways, so I'd suggest copy-pasting the words into any translating function, comparing with the bot's pronunciation, and figuring which sound closest to what fits the situation)

Some people have pointed out that this may be a motorcycle accident, since you can hear lots of traffic in the backround. Riding a motorcycle was the uploader's whole thing, and he may have hit this woman. Judging by the title Howling/Wailing, the video might have been made to make fun of the woman.

Are there masculine/feminine differences in Mandarin? How about formal/informal tenses? I guess what I'm asking is, could we use her words to determine if the person she's speaking to is male/female, young/old, etc.?

    • @lychenthrope
      @lychenthrope 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

@@andrewjhollins What I know is that there are contextual clues in Mandarin that lead to deduction of gender. The pronouns for people are all the same word, so the inflections are what are usually focused on. There are a lot of dialects of Mandarin, and many more 'accents' and ways to say things. I'm not sure if we can deduce who she's speaking to.

The Scene It music isn't scary, but it's definitely jarring. There's SO much going on because there's not really any definitive melody or pattern to anything. There's a ton of instruments present -- accordion, bongos, glockenspiel, marimba, trumpet, bass guitar, tambourine, and a lot more. I think because of how all-over-the-place it is, there's an element of anxiety because your brain doesn't know where to sit down with it. I think the tiktok trend of it is kind of dumb, but it's definitely a song with no specific genre (pop? Latin?) so the facelessness of it can be unnerving. But it does sound like a song a Disney composer would make.

    • @pheocanathebookishwitch5025
      @pheocanathebookishwitch5025 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

It reminds me of collaboritive motif
For example in Steven universe each character is associated with a musical pallet, and these musical pallets interact in different ways depending on what's happening on screen.
The music scene itself gives me the vibe of a giant and chaotic collaboration of multiple leimotifs that would only make sense with the expanded context of what each musical theme represents.
This makes even more sense given that it's a Disney property
Throughout the song there is a dominant repeating leimotif that changes textures with each shift in genre. This motif sounds sickeningly sweet and it NEVER returns to the starting degree or tonic note. I think because this sting never resolves despite all the changes in genre it simulates the feeling of being stalked by continually raising the anticipation while obscuring the structure of the piece with shifts in tempo and genre.
You have the feeling that action is building, but you don't know when and how it will climax. It's like walking through the woods knowing a mountain lion is stalking you, but not knowing WHEN it will strike or what DIRECTION it will come from.
It's a song that keeps you on guard, which explains why people with anxiety issues struggle with it more than others

Maybe "Produce" could be a woman giving birth? "Howling: take me to the hospital" makes sense with this theory and "Produce" refers to the "production" of the baby. I know Chinese Google translate is definitely not accurate, so it easily could be a Google translate error too

It feels like the scene it song might be a litmus test for anxiety. The only thing I can think of is that the ticking clock lends it a mild sense of urgency that could unnerve someone who's already uncomfortable and also a small child. That, or a weird misophonia thing where some noise in there is inherently upsetting to specific people.

    • @CopiousDoinksLLC

I have another theory that most people who say it's "scary" aren't really scared by it so much as they're deeply unsettled by it in a kind of 'uncanny valley' effect because of the highly artificial and mass-produced sound of it. Music is usually supposed to instill an emotion or feeling but this is so soulless and directionless that it actually makes you feel confused inside in the same way that seeing a creepy robot would.

@@CopiousDoinksLLC This is slightly tangential but: I can relate this very specifically to the Wrath of Cortex PS2 game, the Crash Bandicoot sequel made by Traveler's Tales. It was shitty, soulless and awkward, and it gave me the creeps as a child because it's like an old friend behaving strangely. Similar with Enter the Dragonfly, the Spyro sequel.
I think it's the same thing here, Disney produces very high quality movies that children obsess over. The SceneIt? game is so slapdash that it produces the same effect of "why is this thing I love so weird?", and the music is the most immediately apparent thing.

If anything I’d bet it depends on the context of when you’re listening to it or environment. I remember being scared by menu themes in dvds when I was little, and usually because they would be left on in repeat. In regards to the scene it DVD music scaring kids, I may have an explanation.
There are some sound frequencies people of certain ages can hear, that others can't. Like that used in anti-loitering devices that emit a frequency that agitate teenagers.
Maybe the bells in this music piece can come off as eerie and hollow, as well as within it (it seems to be lacking something in the mid range that gives it an odd sound) that i think, if played alone in an echoey space, might illicit a feeling of unease in children.

From a sort of clinical(band kid) perspective all I could really pick up on is the dissonance(clashing sounds/ lack of harmony) and syncopation(off beat/disjointed rhythms). Listening to it the first thing that comes to mind is collaboritive motif.
For example in shows like Steven universe each character is assigned a musical pallet to represent them and those pallets interact in different ways depending on what is happening on screen.
The song itself sounds like a collection of musical pallets that represent something from a larger context that, when removed, feel completely chaotic.
In addition there is one dominant, repeating leimotif throughout the song that changes textures as the track shifts between rhythms and genres. The one that sounds similar to the Simpsons theme.
The dominant leimotif of the song is sickeningly sweet and notably DOES NOT EVER return to the starting degree or tonic note. It just continually builds anticipation without resolving itself which symbolically feels like the dominant leimotif is watching or observing.
It simulates the feeling of being stalked as a build up of tension and no idea when the tension will suddenly release or resolve.

I seriously miss that old "wild west" internet (today's internet has generally become homogenized, corporate, censored, curated, filtered and condensed, but that's another topic). However the march of technology has come a very long way and it's a good thing. That said, for me analog horror is usually less scary and more nostalgic; it's funny how huge it's become with the younger generations these days. Same thing with Vapor Wave music, retro gaming, and really the whole 1980s aesthetic which has all exploded in popularity with Gen Z and younger. It's like this paradoxical love for an idealized past era that the majority of its fans never actually lived through...

I still have my disney scene it (actually my friend left it at our house after a sleepover in like 2012 and never wanted it back lol). I definitely found the music creepy, and I HAVE since been diagnosed with anxiety like I saw another comment theorize. A few times when I was younger I heard it playing in my head while trying to fall asleep and it would freak me out lol. The song plays continuously while you play the physical part of the game, so it would be on loop for over an hour except when someone had to answer any of the DVD questions. I found the different styles of music featured in the song really weird and jarring. Also it seems sort of muted?? Like the background beat is quiet and then the horns and other sound effects are loud. It's just an odd piece of music made to sound kinda whimsical yet full of anticipation, and you can tell the person who wrote it probably didn't care too much about making it sound good (sounding disingenuous/half-hearted, adding to the creep factor).

Agreed, although I never played it as a kid and I'm not scared or creeped out, just annoyed by it. Listening to it for an hour would be very annoying. And if I'm not mistaken a few parts are in a minor key which is universal for making a song sad or creepy. And there's no consistent melody.

I think what makes that Scene MM music scary is that even with these instruments playing, there is this uncomfortable silence that sits in the middle of all of it. On top of that there's weird time signatures and sudden pops of music that suddenly stop. I think for any child this wouldn't be pleasant lol.

    • @honeycrispsnail4032
      @honeycrispsnail4032 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

yeah, it might just be the random bells, chimes, pianos, drums being thrown in there in short riffs, only not to repeat again. the more i listen to it, i can kind of see why this would be disturbing to a young child. if a kid were home alone, in the dark, sitting on the main menu to hear this over and over, that might be pretty unnerving.

    • @sarahberkner

I will say it again here, has a kid I was TERRIFIED of menu scenes from movies not just the scene it Disney movie and in all honesty i can now recognize the feeling the ONLY one i wasn't terrified off unironically was ratatouille's menu start. And here's my explanation of the feeling.
To my kid self the music they'd play in these screen menus always felt unnatural, the best way to describe it would be placing a very happy tune with a completely normal but spacey liminal space.
The feeling that nobody's there and the emptiness of everything when you'd obviously relate the scenery youre watching with the characters from the movie makes it feel unnatural.
The worst one I feared and i can't still believed I feared it had to be the BEE MOVIE screen menu and please don't blame my dum sum kid brain but I sincerely did not appreciate how the vividly bubbling cars, animation and characters would all come to a stop and then the place got empty and the music would suddenly stop, I kid you not it would make me feel so uncomfortable I'd click on play immediately when i popped the movie, after like 2 years later I'd get over it but i still know how i felt and why i felt that way back then.

I think the graphics combined with the music make it creepy. I remember I could never be alone in a room with the game on I was so creeped out. The graphics is an ominous black background with these giant Mickey heads and that in itself is just- not super cutesy or happy. At the same time though, I hated being alone in a room with scene selection and the title screen for movies on, it just felt empty and like… almost like the feeling you get from the back rooms. So I was already creeped out by that stuff and the music made it worse. I think the music is so random because as others say, it doesn’t really follow music laws and as other comments said, the random cowbell and banging gives me like- a sense of urgency almost like a clock ticking. Another part of the game that scared me was the music with the timer for each players turn, and the end celebrations with the early 2000s 3D graphics of the player pieces. There was also the company/production animation before you actually started the game that freaked me out too. I think it was altogether unsettling because it was all just… not good? 😂 like it was low quality and- I don’t even know how to explain it? Again I think of the back rooms. Like you’re alone and expecting someone else to be there. It’s weird.

I think the idea around Disney Scene-it as someone who was uncomfortable around it as a little tike, it might have to do with the aspect of anxiety it puts out. It's a trivia game, and they use that main menu theme music in several of the time-based questions, which always counts down in such an unnerving way. Especially when we're kids, we get affected by stress a lot differently than adults, and that shit always put me on edge when I had to answer a question, and I will remember forever.
Another thing that was at least true in my family is that we always played scene-it late at night, where you have every single person of the family in the living room with maybe a single light on, or maybe none to really immerse yourself in the game, and kids are obviously notorious for being scared of the dark. You mix that in with this sort of progression filled music of suspense, and you have a sure-fire sign of expecting something to happen, no matter if something WILL happen. We take these subconscious ques from the music tying it back to trivia questions, and output that into the real world. Especially when my parents or siblings would need to use the restroom or smoke a cigarette, and now you have me and my little brother sitting in the living room by ourselves waiting for them to return, with this music in the background. It's clear why I at least find it unnerving.

I can't say that the Disney Scene It music unsettles me-- it honestly sounds like a disjointed mess of random instruments and noises with little to no coherent rhythm. Maybe that's why people find it unsettling?
Either way, there are definitely some innocent songs that make me feel that way. I've had insomnia all my life and as a kid I used to leave the TV on, tuned to Disney, while I was trying to go to bed. Anytime there would be a short music video playing, it would give me inexplicable anxiety and I'd begin to feel almost panicked about the fact that it was so late, and I couldn't sleep, and I had school the next day. Theme songs and whatnot didn't give me that vibe though. Its similar to the Spongebob credits music, which is another innocuous song that makes people feel anxious for some reason.

another thing about Disney: Scene It that I want to bring up: there's music from an old Littlest Pet Shop game for the Wii that freaks me out a bit, hell the Wii menu music itself freaks me out. I think that the reason these things freak me out so much is because I have very strong memories of playing it alone in the dark, the whirring motor of my Wii overpowering it just the slightest bit, or waking back up in the middle of the night just to see it still on. I think that a lot of people have a similar association with the Disney Scene It, that odd uncanny feeling of loneliness in the dark when you're supposed to be having fun.

Scene It in general scared the crap outta me as a kid. Not because the music, but because it felt like a horror mystery. Theyd blur out characters faces or remove their heads entirely which still freaks me out to think about. So I think the song is associated with the uncanny feeling of the game overall. Being the main menu, it sets up the anxiety/anticipation felt before playing.

Re: the main menu music / emotion:
It evokes nostalgia, like late elementary school nostalgia. It’s cool math games, its papas freezeria, its mauville city. It’s just a nice, airy grocery store track- not much beyond that.
I wonder if it has something to do with chords / tones / notes which can only be Heard by certain age groups? Like how adults can’t hear high frequencies but kids can. Maybe there’s a high frequency backing track in here which is the missing piece- something only children can hear. Maybe there’s something discordant or off-key about the way those overtones interact with the rest of the song.

great video as always goose.. i want to comment on the "sarah ali" segment, as a muslim and native arabic speaker from the morocco region who asks too many questions im familiar with stuff like this
"manipulation magic" meant to curse people with bad luck or to hypnotize them from a distance was huge in the middle east before the advent of islam. when monotheistic faith began to spread at the end of the first millennium however, it looked down on pagan sorcery as harmless nonsense practiced by medieval scammers to scare people. however a small sect of people who didn't want to give up pre-islamic superstition (mostly jealous housewives and spiteful illiterate rurals who want the feeling of power) still in the 21st century think performing the same shamanistic stone age rituals except while the quran is playing and you write "allah" instead of whatever pagan gods they worshipped at the time on pieces of paper is effective and halal. it may seem like insanity but people who don't have access to the best education will believe anything

When it comes to the Disney scene it something funny happened. I didn't know he was about to talk about that specifically. And I am doing something else while listening to this video, so I didn't know he was about to play that Disney scene it tune. But he kept on about just listening and thinking about your honest thoughts on it. So I was prepared for some spooky sounds or music like lavender town or something. But then it started playing and I immediately started smiling because I was hit with a big dose of nostalgia. I haven't played those games in years and somehow I immediately recognized it. It brought joy to me because I had a lot of fun with those trivia scene its back in the day. Sometimes we would just do the DVD and do the all plays. I had no idea the Disney one was some creepy sound or spooky unsettling music. That's crazy. That sounds like some weird creepypasta about the Disney scene it. It's so unbelievable to me.

The Main Menu Disney Scene-It song has simultaneous happy and weird and vaguely sad vibes. And it sounds like it was made by They Might Be Giants. And TMBG plays with that mix of vibes in their music and happened to work with Disney around that time. Not saying they made it but it's interesting.

I think part of what makes the song unsettling is how inconsistent it is, the beat and the rhythm change so quickly it’s hard to tell what it is you’re listening to. A child who is used to hearing the music of Disney movies probably wasn’t expecting something so fast paced and blank. The menu screen seems empty other than the text which I guess would confuse a child because as a child I remember menu screens having a slideshow showing clips of what I was about to see so it just being that screen and the music probably would’ve made me feel uncomfortable as if something is supposed to happen or I’m supposed to do something but I don’t know what.
The music itself reminds me of toontown though

Disney Scene-It was my family's go-to when I was a kid. It's weird, but I'm *shocked* people find it genuinely scary rather than just a bit unnerving at most. Honestly, it sounds like they tried to make the same instrumental in multiple different styles (ex: at 0:45 in the original clip it seems to almost invoke The Little Mermaid with the steel drum vibes) and instead turned it into some sort of weird medley of all of them.
If anything, the only things I can think of that would make it unsettling would be the fact that there seems to be no pattern or normal structure to the music, and the fact that at 0:05 it has a similar tone as certain types of EAS alarm? (tornadoes were one of my worst fears as a kid, so now as an adult I can pick up sounds at that tone like some sort of audio bloodhound lol)

I think the reason why everyone remembers the name as a “the portrait of Dorian gray“ instead of “the picture of Dorian Gray“ is because the ‘picture’ is a painted _portrait_ so your brain just kind of fixes that and remembers it that way instead of its actual title. In all honesty, I think the “Mandela Effect” is just a natural ‘gap filler’ or ‘sense corrector’ that the brain does when information in memory is missing, kinda like how you can hear someone mumble something and while you know you didn’t hear them, you still understood what they said. But it can lead to reality inaccuracies like the The Berenstain Bears (though that’s likely phonetic as everyone said the name ‘bear-n-steen’ instead of ‘bear-n-stain’, leading to people remembering it for the common spelling of that part of the name “stein” instead of “stain”) or the monopoly man having a monocle is a gap filler since, given the trope he’s depicted as, most depictions of that trope have a top hat and monocle, our brain adjusts the memory to fit that trope to make more sense to us. This isn’t including any mistypes or misprints that had those qualities or knockoffs that did.

There was a specific song too-I’m not sure that it was the one in this video, it was a very specific sound that happened with a menu or something. And it scared the shit out of me.
