- Growing on Twitch is difficult, and people give a lot of different advice so today I am going to give you tips to grow your first 25 average viewers on Twitch and to keep them coming back, otherwise known as a growing a community.
I used these tips to grow my average viewers from 0 to 25 in just 60 days on Twitch.
These tips work for people with 0 viewers and can be used to grow on Twitch, I'll be talking about a few growth strategies:
1. Doing something unique to grow on other platforms
2. What games are best for growth on Twitch
3. How to create a clickable thumbnail for your stream
4. How to encourage viewers to follow your stream, then come back next stream.

How To Choose a game for Twitch Growth
Personally, I think too many people rely on looking at the top games by viewers on Twitch to pick what they play, because I think there is a much better number.
Category Followers. These are the people who have hit follow on a category or game, and if someone has done that they are pretty much going to get recommended on their homepage that category. They’ll also get recommended other categories they like watching, but you can’t see that number.
An example, Stardew Valley a game I got a lot of growth in when I started, took me from 10 avg to 20 avg, has 798,000 followers, an incredibly active community who love it religiously, it still gets updates, has npc’s that are chatty so it's good for smaller streamers with less twitch chat to respond to, but it only averages at 500 - 800 total viewers and you only need 5 viewers to appear in the top 3 rows.
The style of this video is similar to Alpha Gaming and Gaming Careers in parts. A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Wild4games and Nutty.

Your camera is really nice! What camera do you use?
@@Browny1470 For videos, I use an A7s with a 70-200L series 2.8f lens, with filmmaker Rode Lapel mics. I have 2 key lights to light myself as well.
For stream, I use a webcam c922 or something that people often mistake for a dslr due to the lighting I use as well.

Remember y'all make sure to ignore the viewer count, it'll make you nervous and production quality will go down, you'll get viewers eventually just keep trying! You can turn off you viewer count by clicking the number and it'll look like this: --, instead of having your viewer count

You were genuinely helping and not just presenting tricks that work in the short term only.
If we look at all of the advice, they are very logical. Should almost be common sense, really. I guess they are not because of two things you mentioned: wanting to grow fast + not critically analyzing one's own work. Those hinder growth for many.
I'm glad I'm already doing some of the things you mentioned. The consistency is the major issue, but there's only so much I can do while having a job and a family with children.

I streamed a few days ago on twitch for the first time ever. Something I always wanted to do just to pass time if I was bored and meet some people that just wanna chat while I play a game. In 3 hrs of streaming I had 3 viewers (not at once, just total). I was honestly happy that people even found me and watched for even just a few minutes. I like this video. Will watch more and apply some tips I find useful.

I've been watching your videos for a while to get tips while starting out, but I'm finally properly delving in now I'm focusing on my channel. For a little context, I started around 9 months ago as a hobby, reached affiliate a few months ago, now just over 150 followers and 15 average viewers. I love it more and more with each stream, so now's the time to improve for myself and my viewers!
I really enjoy how your videos focus on creative ways to engage and connect with viewers. Honestly, you couldn't pay me not to do it, and I definitely never think of it as a means to an end, but it really is the best thing about twitch to meet new friends, hang out with them (in my stream, theirs, or mutual friends') and get told something I did was really creative or really made them laugh. So I love the very first tip in the video, and I've been mulling it over all day. I'm not trying to reach my first few viewers, so it's probably not something I'd "need" to do, but it sounds like a blast. I'm trying to think of how to adapt something similar for what I do (variety to be fair - language study streams, games, art, etc). If I come up with a fun spin on it, I'll let you and the channel know :)
Definitely think I'll implement the tip to reiterate to my mods and regulars that it's super important to me to greet new people, ask my 'new chatter' question, answer any questions, etc. It's extremely important to me, and I've even seen some channels with channel values alongside channel rules in a panel, which I might do too.
Hey Eljay, first off, thank you so much for the hard work and effort that you put into teaching us how to become better streamers, and creators as a whole. I took your advice on trying something different and have always been interested in a career within the gaming industry, and have had a passive interest in creative/narrative writing. So I took the experience that I had with writing through my academic studies and turned my Subnautica playthrough into a creative writing series on the blog that I started in tandem with it. I have shared it around to a few communities on Reddit that I thought would be interested and have received such positive feedback and awesome engagement! So thank you for giving me a bit of a shove to get going, because I have found something that I am incredibly passionate about doing and even if streaming doesn't lead anywhere, I feel that it has helped me grow in many new ways, both personally and professionally. Dude. I stumbled onto your content and I watched my first two videos and I appreciate how thorough you are in your descriptions of how you accomplished your goals. I have watched so many other youtube "how to grow your stream" videos that I have lost count and I can say with 100 percent honesty I think yours have been my favorite. Naming your streams after puns is such a good tip! I personally do this with most of my streams and every time I do, someone comes in chat and asks me about it. It helps encourage chat and bring new people in.

Finally subscribed after watching so many of your videos. I love the last tip about being critical of your own streams. Especially if you look back at your current layout/about section/mic/etc. and try to see it as objectively as possible, you will see so many things to improve on that you haven't been able to see a few months ago!

I know what it's like to be really harsh on yourself so just remember to be a little easy on yourself from time to time. It's not healthy to constantly analyse things and could downright affect your streaming mood! So just make sure you check in with yourself bro and appreciate the hard efforts you made whether they had large or minor results :)

This channel is a hidden gem. Helped me a lot, too, and still does. I did my first stream last week and a few since then and had a handful of people not only watching but actually staying for the whole thing. It's a weird feeling but really exciting.
I watched this video just before my stream and these tips actually helped me get my best stream yet. I got a maximum of 7 viewers which is the most I've ever had and i got 2 new followers from it. I know it's not much but it's a start. I'm so thankful for your videos!

The same for me when it starts, and I understand why. It is a great way to build while you're offline but the time and effort required isn't truly explained when people give that advice! It's important to play to your own strengths when building on other platforms.
I've never thought about streaming, but after i saw this this made me think of all the possibilities i could do. Just seeing these types of videos really motivate me. First off - thank your (as said by others) for not saying I should start a TH-cam channel. I'd really like to do it, though, but as I'm already being a designer, a blogger, a streamer by hobby, video producing really aint one of those things I'd like to (or had time to) do. Whenever I'll find someone who would be willing to do video content for me or from stream clips, that'd be ideal. :D
Then again, I believe that being active in other platforms can be helpful for growth, but it doesn't actually have to be YT. Some recommend TikTok, some recommend networking in Discords, some do Twitter. Basically you just need to find whatever suits you and what kind of extra content you can do with the skills you already have.
But what goes about myself growing on Twitch - haven't had any luck, still at ~5 average viewers, although been streaming actively for 8 months already. I'm pretty critical about my streams and I believe I've done a good job with my streams, the looks of it, with the possible materials and money I've had to upgrade. But.. I'll try to push some more, because I really like to do it and it would be amazing if I could turn it into a half-time job at least. : )

Your videos actually did help me create better streams and I just started yesterday [Malaysia time GMT +8:00] at 12:30PM.
I followed what you said, schedule my stream, so I schedule it for weekends.
At first, I don't have any viewers since I'm streaming music but I try streaming again today with better audio and engagement with myself
It went well because I followed the tips you told in other videos. The only tips to it were engaging with the 1 and only viewer that then brings me another one that comes from the discovery page. And slowly it grew up to 4! This might be a small number for big streamers but it is a good start for me already. Will try to prevent dropped frames problem in my next stream since I already know what happened.
Thank you so much! My VOD will show you what happened during the stream, there's a massive frozen frame when I reconnect back to the stream. Didn't expect this to happen... My solution to it was moving my computer to a place with a better connection, and that worked. I know this is not Streamlabs fault but my connection. So in my next week's live stream, I will go back to the same place :)

Honestly I started streaming at the start of December and I watched every piece of content i could on the matter. You have been super helpful to me and helping me go in the right direction. The holidays kinda killed what momentum I had going as my regular viewers stoped coming by because they went on holiday and I'm trying to stay positive with that and hoping they come back. But for how I got my first few I have to thank reddit and some creative writing on my part. I started posting to other things than just gaming as well, like I went over to the dark tower subreddit because I wanted to do a playthrough of fallout with one of the main guys from the book and the response was outstanding. Now I got a few follows but no extra viewers from the post, and really I was fine with that because when I was playing I had the mindset of going back to this post and updating it on everything that happened in game. Getting into a mind set of making content with every action really helped me out and gave me and what I was doing buzz, even though it was on another site. So the advice I could give is make what you are doing meaningful to you and even if you are streaming to no one make it for someone.

I’ve been consistent since December but started streaming in 2017. There used to be a way to filter to only see small community channels and now it’s all buried in by bigger streamers. I’ve got good quality, talking 24/7 and I’m also very critical on myself. After this video I think I found where I’ve gone wrong... I’m streaming in the wrong category. Terrible for growth! I need to do some research on some of the games I’d like to play and see which ones show the most little communities and stream there. This video has been beyond helpful, thank you.
Ok, I watched gazmillion videos regarding "Twitching" "YouTubing" "Growth", and I just needed one video from a person saying - hey its hard, but this is how *I* did it.
Its not a rule for everyone but this is excellent starting point especially for saturated gaming market.
Most awesomesupercool (trademark on kudo) video, charismatic (non-fraud) personality, and he even looks at his viewers as persons.
Hope you'll get thousands of viewers, I admire your drive.

I've never heard someone call streaming on Twitch, Twitching.
This video is very realistic and most of the tips have helped me a lot I’ve been streaming for around two weeks now and I got affiliated last week with an average of 7 viewers on among us I’m trying to push further I’ve recently been streaming with other streamers and we host each other regularly which brings each other a lot of viewers but I feel like I’m not progressing at a fast enough rate which is bringing down my confidence and motivation so idk how long I can keep this up without a more active community rn
You've got 7 average viewers after 2 weeks? That is fairly solid man, that is the same as me when I started, and a lot higher than most people after 2 weeks! Now you just need to keep them as a community and focus on consistency.
Try not to rush, Twitch growth is fickle and it comes and goes as it pleases. Look for places you can improve that you can control and work on those while nurturing your current viewers into a community. Good work! Keep it up!

Glad it helped! I think growing past 25 you do need more diversified channels, having a TH-cam channel or some other external platform really will help when you want to push past 25 average viewers so it will help in the long run!

I would argue there is a key difference between being critical and harsh on yourself vs. constructive with yourself. I find looking for ways to grow needs a positive force behind it in order for one to help foster confidence and maintain enjoyment. And that sort of thing will shine through in streams.

Wish there were more hours in the day. For me to do this right, I'd need to give up something otherwise lose sleep and risk my health... which sucks...
I feel that, it’s taken a lot to balance everything and slowly shift focus. Not there yet but eventually, it sadly takes huge investment of time and energy.
i feel you man, i am working my ass off 9-12 hours in 2 different shifts and my work is really hard for the body, when i come home i am just dead, its really hard to do all this stuff after work, but we should just keep doing it, its worth it.
The hardest thing a small TH-camr can feel is when you wake up in the morning and nothing has changed on your channel 😢💔

I've been streaming for 3 years now, to get big you need your friends to watch you. Just sitting there with 1 constant viewer won't let you grow at all

This guy speaks to me on sooooooo many levels!! I was only this morning feeling so down in the dumps cos I couldn't figure out what to do with my YT channel from certain other channels saying it was the way to build viewers and was instantly put to ease after watching this! Stream Scheme , My average viewers tend to differ quite a lot depending on the day.. I stream in a saturated catagory but doing well.
I had a really good start to my twitch. On my first day, I was already averaging 10-12 viewers after a big raid. As much work as you can put into twitch, sometimes it really is the 'luck of the draw'.
100% Sometimes it truly is being at the right place at the right time!
Loving the tips that I have seen so far from the videos that popped up. My phone knows that I have been streaming the last few days and started suggesting your channel. lol.
It's funny that you brought up the reddit idea for growing your stream. I originally was going to do a series of modded Skyrim runs and post the results on reddit like journal entries from the characters. I didn't have the means to do that before, but now that I am thinking about the idea again and having your advice accompany it, I may have to give it another shot. ;)
