  • I get told constantly by you watching this, that you can’t keep talking, and you can’t make good content because you have 0 chatters and 0 viewers which is holding you back… seriously, every time I tell you guys to make good content to grow and to keep talking the comments get flooded by it.
Today I am going to give you the perfect Twitch growth tool for someone with 0 Viewers, and 0 chatters… it’s a bit of a process though, and not some magical quick fix because actual help never is… let's take it step by step!

    How To Grow On Twitch?
If you want to grow your Twitch stream, it is important to be critical. Being critical isn’t a bad thing, people say, “Oh don’t be so critical of yourself!”.
But there are a lot of things you can control and improve, such as your visuals, audio, and most importantly your content that you’re creating. Watch back your VoD and be honest with yourself, is it up to scratch. Does your mic sound good? Are you engaging? Is it easy to watch and enjoy or is there something that is off-putting? Be honest, push yourself to grow, and become a better entertainer!
Because at the end of the day, the only way you are going to grow your stream is by growing yourself and being critical in a positive way.

What Bitrate And Settings Should I Use For Streaming?
The easiest way to understand bitrate is by calling what it actually is, your upload speed to the Twitch servers.
Now you’ll need a higher bitrate depending on how high quality you want your stream to be, this means 1080p 60 frames per second will need a bitrate of 6000, which roughly equals 6megabits upload speed on your end being taken up
By lowering your resolution and framerate, you can make it a lot easier to stream, for example, if you set your base canvas size to 1920x1080, but change your output to 1280x720 otherwise known as 720p you drop down to only needing a bitrate of 4500 or 4.5megabits.
If you still want 1080, you can even just lower your framerate from 60fps to 30fps and then adjust to 4500bitrate.
For more information visit this Bitrate graph: stream.twitch.tv/

As someone whose viewership has dipped by a lot this year, thank you. This was a great reminder why I started. I realized that not having viewers when I first started pushed me to tell better stories and be more entertaining on my stream, which in turn made for better content. Gaining viewers made me slack off and lose sight of what's important: make content that I find entertaining.

"Streaming" to 0 viewers instantly removes any anxiety from the equation and allows you to create awesome content that's easy to edit. One of the most important things is:
Just keep having fun. Try to talk about stuff that makes you feel happy and you can have fun with.
Worst part about watching someone with low levels of viewers is, if they are not talking and just playing.. or just blasting insanely loud music!

Such a great video Eljay, your final point hit me so hard. I stepped back from streaming at the start of the year to focus on just making videos and I've noticed such a difference in my mood and general happiness. Side note, can you make a video on your favourite editing tips and tricks, just little things to make the process itself easier, even in the recording process too, can't speak for anyone else, but a lot of channels which offer that kind of advice doesn't do it anywhere near the level you do

I gotta say, this helped, as your videos do so often!
I know for myself, that I just love streaming too much to only produce youtube videos, that inludes streaming to zero viewers, because frankly I just love to hear myself talk.
But sometimes I get a real dip in creativity and being entertaining if I just talked to a lot of people in chat and then the interactivity slows down to zero and I gotta shift from interacting with chat to being entertaining on my own again.
I think in these instances it would be very helpful to just imagine that I'm recording a video instead!

  • @ladyteddi

When i was still starting out streaming and watching your videos to learn how to be better, i really appreciated this advice. And now that i am slightly more established and am trying to help other new streamers try to grow, i have to say that i really commend your patience in having to say this over and over and over. I find it really infuriating having the SAME conversation over and over with the same people. People wont want to stick around and talk if you arent already entertaining enough to want to talk too, and a lot of the time people just want to relax and be entertained with the pressure of talking. It definitely is EASIER when youve got someone to talk to but its not the viewers job to help you be a good streamer and be entertaining 🤷‍♀️ if i cant think of anything to say, ill try to talk about my day or ill just be really mindful about verbally narrating what im thinking and doing in whatever game im playing.
I think its easier to stream when i have 0 expectations for my chat, because then its just a bonus when my chat does end up being entertaining 😅

    • @GalarianGuy

I think that's a matter of asking yourself why that got 25k views and why the last video got 100+ views, like was there a higher quality thumbnail? Was it a more popular game or topic? Was the challenge in it unique? Was it easier to follow along? etc.

I've always struggled with the talking with nobody there, which is probably one of the reasons I never kicked into gear more with this over the years, but one thing you said kind of hit right with me and that's recording and making a video and talking not like you are talking to nobody, but talking to your editor, even if that editor is yourself. I'm going to try that in recorded content and work on engaging with the future viewer and not the current viewer, and maybe that'll help me to eventually make my way into more confidence in streaming.

As a Fortnite streamer who tries to make every livestream an interactive recording session, I can definitely relate to the editing struggle. So many great moments are filled with random speaking topics that were only relevant in the moment. I guess that explains why the big dogs don’t talk a lot to chat running 200 MPH so there videos have as little random fluff as possible. Makes me wonder how so many big streamers have chat popping off like mad even though they barely interact with chat. Great video tho!

    Thx for the vid!
I recently finally started to edit my vids using the PS5 share factory since I don't own a PC and I'm learning as I go.
Guess I should buy a good mic and not use the headphones from what I keep hearing people say on TH-cam videos that I've been watching.
Also, an issue I've ran across is that I'm playing a multiplayer game and my voice sounds so much louder than the other players on the chat so that sucks. Gotta figure out how to fix that.
But yeah, I'm going to play an Indy horror game and use the tactics from this vid.
I only have a PS4 camera so still need to buy the adapter to be able to plug that camera to my PS5 to record my face.
I have so much to learn when it comes to edit though.
    I'll get there one day!

I became affiliated within my first month of twitch and it took hard work, how I did this was I made a discord based around fallout as it’s one my fave games n I went into peoples streams with low viewers who were playing the game n started chatting n invited them in I made 3 good American friends who I still talk to this day and one has subbed to me for 12 months now(this was a year ago when we all met online) we all supported each other I made affiliate first then a few months after my first American mate did then a few months after my other American mate, we all set a goal and made it. Unfortunately I had mental issues n stopped streaming and now I am struggling to get viewers again but I know I can do it again. You mentioned, though, you weren't gonna edit your Vods anymore. Are you simply going to leave them and upload them as is? Or a separate vod channel? I know thats an odd question but Let me explain!
I've been debating switching to TH-cam because the livestreams have their own section now. It makes TH-cam feel a lot more clean and concise! Maybe a video about the pros and cons of streaming on TH-cam vs Twitch for 2023 would be very helpful? I feel like im on the fence, but more information might help!

I just started streaming this week, and I was one of the lucky ones that one of my friends watched both of my streams. So I had one person for 3 hours, and even though that seems awful, I was lucky that that one friend stuck with me. It gave me experience with trying to talk to them while gaming and trying to be entertaining. I acted as if there were hundreds of people watching me the entire time even though it was only one person. Acting as if there are multiple people there constantly watching forces you to be entertaining and put effort into your stream. Not sure if that's great advice, but that seems to be helping me get comfy in front of the camera. If anyone has any extra tips I'm more than happy to get more advice!

I have fun gaming and stream to enjoy that time with anyone that stops by, whether it be a family member just saying hi, someone interested in the game I'm playing, or a friend telling me im bad.
Numbers are just numbers, i'm going to have a good time even if no one is watching.
A Few days ago I Spent 5 hours learning shotcut (video editing software) and made a 4 minute video of some gameplay that I think turned out great.
No one is watching the video but me and the few people I have shown it to, but I really like it, and I'm proud of my work.
I have met a handful of really nice people streaming for the past month and have had a great time playing with them.

It wasn't an incredibly successful stream on paper, but I felt really good about it at the end, even though it ended with the stream crashing lol. I am usually very aware how many people are in chat and when it dies down, I do to and I can tell it's getting stale. Last night chat really didn't matter. I did engage with them of course, but even when nobody was saying anything, which wasn't often, I still kept talking. It felt a bit weird but I'm sure I'll get more comfortable with it.

a difference on Twitch -- before affiliation -- is that uploads are not available, we can broadcast and edit VODs for a profile page or download the files for re-broadcast.
knowing that, a year ago i started streaming to zero viewers in order to create files i could edit within the creator dashboard there. acting like money was not the goal and acting like live viewers were a bonus -- lets me have fun with OBS and Twitch while Twitch stores the files; this content can rack up views later or after editing. when Twitch cut back broadcast retention for Small Streamers from 14 days to 7 days it helped create discipline in my workflow.
the process eljay describes Is productive. if i wanted to migrate to youtube the workload would be similar, in fact i often hit the record button in error when starting streams. i now save content which i really care about for a period when the software and process feel naturally scuffed. listen to eljay folks, he's onto something.

American Sign Language is my first language which I can’t make a good content for hearing viewers like this way who don't know ASL. I had to type my iPhone a lot . It was really hard to interact with others. When I read chatters, I always try to find a good time to reply. I have to type iPhone while I can’t play. I died in that game often. Everyone can speak but some people can’t speak like me. I used to be so good at tony hawk game but I couldn’t connect with many viewers. That game is not popular game in 2023 anymore. Idk what to do. I wanted to talk as much as I could from my mind but I couldn’t speak 😢. I always wish I could sign language to webcam then it could translate into English as a subtitle. It will Be way easier for me to interact with viewers. It's really hard for being deaf streamer

Being used to having a bunch of viewers per stream to being lucky to have 3+ consistently due to playing a different game simply because I don’t enjoy what I used to stream, I’ve learnt that if you enjoy what you play/do for stream, having chatters won’t matter, the fun will come from your own playtime, in the words of the famous Uncle Aaron “you’re on your way…keep going”!

I & a friend recently just started streaming, and i think it's better to be focusing on learning the basics about OBS and Twitch, do some testing, and just play with it for a wile, RATHER than focusing on making money or becoming famous. Not everyone even BECOMES famous🤷🏻‍♂️ but i think the more u learn & the more u focus on OBS, everything else might follow.
But i am doing twitch now BOTH because i think it's fun, AND to challenge myself. Doing something i've never done before

Thank you for this love your videos.

I think I have come to the same conclusion. I've tried to bite off too much at once. Trying to learn how to record videos. edit videos (totally new) and then try to grind on Twitch is just too much. Plus I waited way too late in life to learn all this. Should have started 15 years ago. I think I might just focus on videos and do streaming later or something.

I had started streaming about 3 weeks ago now. I would first stream onto twitch with the overlays and then would work on editing the videos onto TH-cam.
My question is in everyone's opinion, would it be better to stream without the webcam and chat or does it really matter?
Also, is there a resource on how to edit the video to where I only show the best parts.... I cut my videos into 2 parts but have not cut out any of the filler in between.

seeing the final tip, as well as remembering a content creator by the name of ChippysCouch , reminded me on why i wanted to make content, but at the same time im also not sure what stories i should say, especially now as i have a laptop capable of streaming quality video at 3000kbps at 1080p, and despite recommendations baised on both one of your videos and twitch, somehow im able to stream at perfect quality (though my last stream i forgot to mute my switch audio) with the only issues being a few bad frames at the start of stream which have gotten better at recovery (i dont even need to interfere with obs that much for the recovery) today I have uploaded a recording of my vod and i have linked my twitch in the description of said video
but like the comments below and what you have stated in this video, just tell stories and pretend your making a video, but is it alright to interupt my story to respond to one of my chatters? (i dont have any but still)

But what I'm mainly taking away from this is come up with good TH-cam ideas. Upload those and maybe stream it at the same time. Of course post socials and say you stream everyday.

I always envied big creators like Asmongold their huge chat. Until I started reading that chat. The recent Asmongold's Diablo IV chat was awful. I tried to read it, tried to find something useful or fun, or I don't know, helpful there, but here's the thing - when the chat is going at that speed, you are skimming through the messages, and you are much more likely to remember a stupid or toxic or rude message, then a positive one. I grew new appreciation for Asmon that day.
As for streaming to 0 viewers: invite a friend. I don't believe there is not a single person that would be willing to spend 30-60 min of their time for your stream. That will help you set the mood for the rest of the stream, and your casual conversation with that friend might attract people to your stream. And if there are no people after your friend has to leave, end the stream on a positive note - no shame in that, and much better then streaming back to 0 viewers feeling miserable.

I dunno, I have 0 viewers most of the time. Maybe 1. I just talk on. I am having fun playing a game. I am streaming for to put myself outside my comfort zone. I am stupidly shy. Maybe because of my autism. I never had good experiences with other people. My first month or two of streaming I was actually having a hard time with it. My voice was even straining badly because I never talk much IRL.
I still need to learn how to edit a video for TH-cam. I'm just adding raw footage to my channel. I've made a clip or two of 1 small part of my video, just not sure how to break down 6 hour 12 hour videos into multiple clips for 1 video. This isn't my channel but I feel so discouraged being that I used to have 15 viewers constantly, 10 chatters, friends joining in... Strangers... Now I can't even get a friend on the stream. I feel like all content is the same these days & I don't know how to be different. I don't want to do what works because it's all become cliche. It's the reason most of my friends & myself don't watch streams anymore. It's all become marketing & the communities have all become googly eyes fans who seem to care more about the content than making the experience fun. When content started feeling like a dreadful job with a mix of insanity, it made me realize I don't care what Twitch viewers or TH-cam viewers like anymore. I've made a little money on an old TH-cam channel & old Twitch channel. I feel like back then you could be your genuine self, now everybody seems to have to sell out. It's annoying that streamers think of themselves so highly today when they have less than 50 viewers. They won't play with viewers, they almost seem like bots not for the views. It's all become so fake it's painful.

I think the fact the Twitch is focused on so much on ads and making that work that it really hurts the viewer experience and, most of all, the browzing experience. That does mean people either don't browze or browze a lot less. Over time, people will favour other platforms to browze for people to watch.
Example. I now only watch a few streamers. Because without fail, I'll enjoy myself. I don't look for new people as it's not fun to do that. It's rough. And it's not easy to find good content creators. So i just choose to watch ones i already know are good.

Funny he called me out re: Resolve hehe. I actually bought my previous software a few years back but it didn't support 1440p. So I moved to resolve and have had to learn from scratch but man, I've been able to quickly and easily make shorts which have really had a positive impact on the channel. I didn't care about them before but I got out of my comfort zone and forced myself to learn some new shit. Now I can get more eyes towards my channel which is a win. I've had no issue talking to 0 viewers in the past - I always have the mindset that after the stream, when cool stuff happens, my reaction will be perfect for a short / tiktok. Also, its going to be cool as a tool when I'm a geezer with no memory to be able to relive my own experiences. Its like a gaming time capsule to me in a way. Anyway, whether I have no one in chat, I'm still talking and providing commentary because for that person that comes in, I want be engaging and into what I'm doing so that they may also become the same and say hi and get into whatever it is we're doing.

So it's just gameplay and well my model. I'm a vtuber so you might not have really much an answer for the vtuber side of it. But, the streaming aspect is what bothers me. I have the same problem 0 to 1 view with no one chatting. I do the things that most people would be willing to watch still nothing. I don't know. Despite all of this I still stream no matter how many I have in my live. Is there anything that I can do to draw in more people even its like a dead game or popular game. Coming back to this video with a thought:
If you struggle with talking on stream with no one in chat to talk to, I highly recommend watching big streamers that are having competitions vs other streamers. This is because the chances are they've put chat into "emote only mode" as to not get an edge on the competition. You can then see how they comment on the game they're playing and manage to avoid the dreaded "dead air", despite not having chat to talk to.
A good example of this is SmallAnt, who often does "bingo" or "lockouts" against other people in the games he plays.
