  • The 8GB AMD RX 580 was an excellent mid-range gaming graphics card back in 2017. Six years later, it can still play modern games with at least 60FPS. Today we're testing 10 titles with this legendary GPU.

    Love your 'common-man' reviews. Most of the channels now take 1440p/4K and newest GPUs as the top priorities, but for a good chunk of crowd out there still holding onto their 1070s, 1060s and 580s/570s, you provide highly relatable benchmarks.

      @remo27 ปีที่แล้ว +67

      1080p is still the most common gaming resolution on Steam, and lots of cards from 4, 5, even 6,or 7 years ago are still perfectly viable for that. That's partly b/c of the pandemic and associated supply chain disruptions as well as the mining craze that both disrupted the adaptation of newer cards but also slowed the pace of technological progress down a bit. Plus, while it will be increasingly important for the future, right now hardware based real time ray-tracing isn't really very common in games and certainly isn't as viable on many of the newer cards( you really have to go expensive to get good performance with that enabled) as the industry pretends. Lastly , there's the 'upscaling' technologies from both NVIDIA and AMD that help extend the lives of some pretty darn old cards even farther.

      yeah I pretty much lsiten to zWormz for this reason, he is really very very good, him and Dawid. I like both those guys very much, these is three favourite channels of mine for older graphics hardware, I sometimes like Linus for making old rig enthusiasm stuff like classic PC components in mineral oil or heating his garage with mining, but he is often basically like salesman who shows off newest shiniest tech and he clearly used to playing with most top of the line stuff so much so he can simply drop Epyc processors like my next month salary is nothing to him. Meanwhile other channels are great for the everyman gamer. I think, they many time don't seem to understand or remember not everybody is USA/maplesyrupUSA/teandcrumpetsphere. Which is why I liek Jayztwocents, because, he listens and cares to the concerns of the everyman gamer and that not everybody is some rich "consultant" or "legitimate businessman" on the USA and there are people in other countries who watch these channels. So, it is very convenient to them.

      I mean in fairness and all honesty the 5700XT can be had now for $200 and that like the 1080ti remains a gold standard for gaming and can still make demanding games play at ultra settings 1440p and get at least over 30fps, which makes it still a perfect 1080p gaming card for literally all games. Which the RX 580 and GTX 980 or 1060 or 1650S is still a classic gold standard for intro to 1080p for the same reasons, basically it's get a 580 or 1060 if you want to game at 1060 30fps very high, and get a 1080ti or 5700XT if you want to game at 60fps all ultra. I do believe that basically the 2080ti is going to be called as the standard level performance for 1440p, much the way 3070 got 4k tier performance on release despite being crippled into being basically a 1080p raytracing card, which is sad because were it not for VRAM and had 12-16gb the 3070 or 3070ti would be a gold standard for 1440p.
      Also this is all nVidia's fault, literally. It still would be and SHOULD be $230 is the entrance fee, and it's only their scumfuckery that's been pushing the price so sky high a 60 level performing card is being priced as a 80 card and called a "70" card. Much the way the whole market's been fucked though I don't let AMD off the hook, those fuckers basically released a 7800XT for $900 and rebranded it as "7900XT" then pretended like they were not releasing a 4090 competitor, because basically their TDP was shit and they didn't want to be a pathetic meme like nVidia with their card literally bursting into flame and burning your house down because they knew that tards always would buy nVidia's halo bullshittery no matter what and so it was sorta pointless, also because they couldn't justify the price so easily, but yes the 7800XT basically just got rebranded as a 7900XT and price gouged tf out of us for turning a $650 card into a $900 card because nVidia's sleeze made it stupid for a heartless corpo to not price gouge their card also. What really they should have done is called it what it is, a 7800XT, and just priced it at $700 and they would've slaughtered nVidia. I think fanboys are pretty dumb, but they're not THAT dumb they wouldn't switch brands and dump the 4080 like a hot sack of shit and jump on the 7800XT. Maybe they got really dispirited and demoralized by RDNA2 not selling like it should have, given RDNA2 was the first generation in a decade where AMD cards were literally superior to nVidia cards across the entire stack.

    I'm using a 580 right now and I adore this thing! In the lead up to Half-Life: Alyx I needed to upgrade on a budget, and took a chance on an eBay listing that may or may not have been an ex-mining card. For ~$140, at a time when most of them were substantially more expensive, I got an 8GB Sapphire Nitro+ variant that ran the game well enough for me to thoroughly enjoy the experience. Paired with a secondhand Xeon E3-1275L v3, it's not up to the demand of the best looking modern titles, but I play mostly older stuff (e.g. Quake at 1440p by way of Ironwail), or newer games at lower settings, combined with a bit of video editing in Resolve, all of which the card handles comfortably. I'm thrilled with what I got for my money; well done AMD!

      The Sapphire Nitro lineup are always going to have a price premium, a much better quality build, better cooler and generally a slightly better performing GPU than the equivalent model from another manufacturer 💪🥰.

      @RobMartens ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelthompson9798 Definitely! My previous experience with an RX 460 from them was a big reason the card was so appealing. Knowing how nice the cooling was, both in terms of performance and noise levels/timbre, made me jump at the chance. This 580 has served me well for more than 3 years so far, and I'll happily consider Sapphire first the next time I need a GPU.

      @RobMartens ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Loundsify Pardon the self promotion, but I have a video series on my channel showcasing my first playthrough, if you want to see what sort of framerate I was dealing with; I don't remember exact numbers, but I had a mostly comfortable experience. As I recall I had most of the quality settings turned down except for textures (the main reason I went for an 8GB model instead of e.g. a 6GB 1060). There's noticeable slowdown in a couple spots, namely the late game trainyard fight with all the antlions, but most of that is the fault of recording video at the same time. Trying those areas again without any video encoding showed an improvement, if I remember correctly. I was playing with a Dell Visor WMR headset, and the resolution was quite low most of the time, so it certainly wasn't a premium experience, but it was playable and bang for my buck was through the roof. I still loved HL:A, and all the lower-end compromises I had to deal with to run it almost immediately faded into the background and let me get totally absorbed in the game.

Back then it was trading blows with 1060/6 for sure, but the VRAM was a deciding factor for me along with AMD's trend to have "fine wine" GPUs. Vulkan was also giving this card a big boost over the 1060, though maybe it's different nowadays. The card allowed me to set high textures in games even if I had to lower some other settings. They are available for a pittance right now, but running them in Crossfire isn't gonna help you at all.

    Personally, my train of thought is to get the game looking as nice as possible whilst still retaining an average of at least 60fps (or as close to 60fps as possible). If you've got the hardware to use higher settings then you might as well take advantage of it!

      For single player games, I'm usually happy with 45, or even 30 FPS if I love the game enough. To me, 60FPS is only a minimum for really hard single player games (Without difficulty settings for instance) or multiplayer games. But then, my first PC was an XT, and my first real gaming PC was a 386 based system which I had playing the original DOOM (admittedly it was the 40mhz AMD chip inside so performed better than most 386 systems). Coming from my first video game console being the venerable Atari 2600 maybe I just have different standards.

    • @TheSpotify95

      Yeah, as you say, it all depends on the game and what you're happy with, although usually, 60fps is considered to be a good target for smooth gameplay.

    The RX 480/580 were definitely the best bang for the money for almost 6 years, my RX 480 saved me from the chip shortage/crypto mining craze, I will never forget Polaris and the value it brought to all gamers who bought them. Too bad people just blindly buy nvidia all the time even nowadays when AMD offers good value even today with the 6000 series.

    be warned for anyone looking to buy one, make sure your getting the 8gb variant, theres a 4gb vram model that was around too, super common in prebult pcs, had one in my pc 5 years ago and it performs way worse due to the lesser vram, and wont last much in todays games, so just be sure if you get one its the 8gb model if possible and if not stated then check to see if it was from a prebuilt, if so then its probably the 4gb variant, also the rx5700 xt is another great option if prices are good in your region

AMD had some really good stuff with with the GCN 4.0 architecture and it was never valued enough in my opinion cause Pascal stood out too much. Enough so that i moved up to the rx 5700xt and then rx 6700xt but have somehow found myself right back at nvidia with a 3080 ti, which I did not pay for all of it or even half due to the trendy brother that just has to have the latest and greatest so his 4090 purchase netted me the 3080ti. I love the amd cards and performance. Admittedly all cards have hiccups here and there but amd had the most driver issues I had ever dealt with but that may just be because I used amd from the r9 290 up to the 6700. Anyhow great content, ty again. See if you can get hold of a maxwell titan x 2016 and do a relevancy review of it in the 12gb world. My son is begging as that is what is still in his tired rig full of my leftovers.

      If you look at the benchmarks. Majority of the games used less than 4gb vram. So I'm guessing it won't be that different for many of the games. Only for those released this year and onwards. Where they're trying to push the system requirements to unreasonable specs. I'm guessing newer GPUs aren't selling well and they have to force people somehow.
      Because if you look at newer games they don't look that good compared to some games released 10 years ago to justify the requirements.
