Even in the wake of the GPU shortage, it still doesn't feel like a great time to be upgrading. New graphics cards are more expensive on average, and yet game development might have you feeling like you're being left behind. There are some great options for those looking to upgrade their old GTX 1060s and 1650s without spending over the odds, and in this video I'll talk about a few of the best.

A little known secret, you can get an RX 470 8 GB mining edition for 20 or 30€ (the ones with no output ports), miners are just throwing them away because nobody buys a card with no connectors and CeX does not accept them, but they all have an hidden HDMI port inside that you can easily solder back on, or if you don't want any trouble, just simply use the CPU iGPU output port on your motherboard, it works just fine...

The entire reason I chose my RX480 8gb in Jan 2020 was for the 8gb of VRAM. The 2gb of VRAM was holding my GTX950 back in nearly every game, and I knew I didn't want to fuss with things for a long time. I think I chose quite well considering I was able to get it for only $100 used, and I'm still using it with no real plan of upgrading.

Same for me with my $155 new RX 570 8GB in mid 2020. But to be fair, it was the only choice that made sense. Nvidia had the 1050ti and 1650 at the same price point. The RX 580 and 590 cost a bit more for not much more performance and the 1650 Super 4GB cost around $300 (Nvidia fail). Very happy with the 570 8GB, especially after modding the BIOS and pushing it to RX 580 performance while undervolting for less noise and heat. I've noticed almost every AAA game newer than 2016 will use between 4 and 5GB of VRAM when maxed out. RE Village goes up to 7.7GB. If you ask me, cards with less than 8GB of VRAM stopped making sense 3 years ago already.

As an RX 6600 owner, I recommend it. It was a birthday gift from a good friend. I don’t play a lot of games, nor very demanding ones, Doom 2016 on occasion, some Minecraft, way too much War Thunder, the Master Chief Collection from time to time. But the way it maxes out each game with ease on my 1080p monitor meets my needs and I can say I’m more than satisfied.
I plan to keep this card for a while, the only reason I’d consider upgrading is for an eventual RX 7600, if it ever happens, for the supposed AV1 encode RDNA III GPUs are supposed to be capable of, as I like to record a lot of my gameplay, but my internet prevents me from streaming. Unless of course they start stripping encoders again like they did to the RX 6500...

VRAM requirements are definitely going up, no question, but one of the best reasons to game on PC is the vast amount of scalability on offer. It’s been like that for over a decade, even on games that were PC only.
Graphical presets are a thing and have been a thing for a very long time, and they used to mean something. Now, in games like The Last of Us, turning settings down to Medium results in a muddy mess. A Plague Tale: Requiem (a current gen only title) scales remarkably well with the visual settings, and that studio had less than half the budget and team size.
Sure, we’ve had a few Crysis-like games that push the boundaries, and I’d argue it’s good for the industry to have those, but I can’t help but shake this feeling that a lot of studios are just not taking the time to properly scale visuals down appropriately anymore, whether that be due to time constraints or the desire not to. Either way, it’s not the consumers responsibility to brute force system requirements by being forced to spend a grand every couple of years just to be able to get decent performance. For the high end, sure, but for everyone else it’s insane to expect upgrades so fast.
If publishers want to raise the price of games (and you’d better believe they will keep pushing for that) then we should expect a premium product that isn’t a buggy, broken mess, requiring 12GBs of VRAM to simply have a game look as good as it did on the PS5 , a console that is vastly out of date already. The Last of Us IS poorly optimized, and side by side comparisons to the console version of the Remake is incredibly sobering just how poorly optimized it is. I find it highly disturbing that so many influential figures in the PC gaming space are using this horribly optimized game as the smoking gun to prove to everyone that we absolutely NEED 16GB VRAM at a minimum, when the reality is that a lot of these PC games, and many PC ports in the past, are just poorly optimized.
And of course, in the midst of the “you need 16GB VRAM to run any game in 2023” argument, Dead Island 2 comes out and competently optimized. Yes, a game that has been in development hell for years came out more optimized than one of the most lauded and praised games of the last decade. What a crazy world we live in.

    • @tojiroh
      @tojiroh ปีที่แล้ว +1

This. When it comes to irrationality, consistently rising hardware specs just to make up for poor optimization (on AAA titles, no less) seems to be the norm. Most low budget/indie games on my catalogue run perfectly fine on my Ryzen 4650G iGPU 😉

  • @hasnihossainsami8375
    @hasnihossainsami8375 ปีที่แล้ว +7

The thing about more VRAM is that it allows for better/higher texture quality, which usually does not impact performance. So it's essentially a free visual upgrade even if the performance isn't as good. Performance can be improved with lower settings, but losing out on the visual quality at the same time because of lower quality textures even if I could have them without sacrificing performance means I'll have the worst of both worlds. The RX580 8GB is an old card at this point, and performance in newer games is basically a console experience, but games still look nice because of the higher quality textures. I'd rather have that than be forced to upgrade because my game both runs and looks like crap.

I’d recommend a RX6600 purely for the price to value and also the efficiency of the card as it’s only a 130w tdp. I managed to get one on eBay for £175 used like new however they hover around £200, for that price it’s a 9 teraflop GPU with 8GB of RAM, which going forward seems like will be the minimum VRAM spec. This card sits nicely in my SFF build using only a 330w PSU, efficient gaming FTW ha

Vega56/64, or Radeon RX 5700XT are the cards I would recommend for 1080p 60 if you can get them at a good price.
The Vega Lineup, which includes the Radeon VII, is quite solid. The Radeon VII is a special niche card that still commands value due to its 16GB of HBM2 memory but Vega56/64 can be had for a very good price. There are also Vega Frontier edition cards that sometimes you can get for a good price and those have 16GB of VRAM.

I, like some others in the comments, would recommend just pulling the trigger on a 6600 if they live in the US or UK and can spend 200-250 USD or pounds on a GPU, and don't want to look for a used 6600XT.

It's funny because the thing they add to stop piracy (DRM) is actually driving up piracy because the DRM often tanks the games performance, at this point they'd be better off just not adding it especially since it costs them a decent amount to implement and is usually cracked within a week anyway

I upgraded from my 1060 6GB almost exactly 3 years ago because it's 6 chip memory solution was making it's performance fall off a cliff compared to 8GB 8 chip competitors. I replaced it with a 2060S so got both an 8 chip card and one with higher bandwidth per chip. It's still fine at 1080P and DLSS keeps it ahead of anything new at anywhere near the price I'd get for selling it. I'll keep it for another year or two then replace it with a 16GB card.

Also leaving a card running for 2 years degrades the card only a tad bit, unlike the multiple tens or hundreds of heat cycles per day in normal use, it’s like a taxi vs your own car, the taxi will probably hold up longer bc it’s motor never has to run cold.
The change in temperature therefore expansion of every material used in the gpu is what kills your Hardware usually. Just don’t get ripped off bc like the video says, miners also have no vertebrae and will sell their mining cards as “new”

The 2080 Super plays all my games at 2560x1440 resolution at their highest, or near highest, settings and gives me a good smooth experience. Otherwise you'll be relegated to playing 1080 low or medium settings with new titles. 8GB is fine if you don't plan on playing new games, but that's kind of a niche case. As an owner of the 3060 12GB I was thinking how I overpaid a bit and how 12GB of vram was overkill for 1080p (dual monitor setup but games run at 1080p native on one monitor) but I guess I was lucky I didnt go for the ~100 euro cheaper 2060 6GB.
2060 12GB and 2060 super with its 8GB are real hard to find.

Same for me, i saved up 800 euro, the price of a 3070 back than, but ended up going for a 3060 12gb because my 2 last videocards were rendered useless because of a lack of vram. (they had 2 and 4 gb of vram)
I spend 469 euro on the 3060 12gb and bought an electric scooter with the rest of the money haha.

Yeah I went with 3060 12GB too since my card before I was using 1050ti for 6 years and figured now is the right time to go for it. Since I was gonna wait for a 4060 and 4060ti but seeing the rumors of them being 8GB cards... So I took the leap and have no regrets for the past month. Since im American... I got it for 380 USD.

@Blue 6700 is not that faster plus have 10gb vram instead 12gb
6700xt is good choice over 3060 if u don't need rt
      But 6700 is not

@@pk417 Even the 6650xt is faster, the 6700 is much faster

Well i got a GTX 1070. It's been serving me for 7 years and It's a real bummer how little the consumer GPU's have moved forward. I ain't spending a fortune on a new card with the *same ammount of VRAM* as my 7 yo card.

I recently bought a GTX 1080 on eBay for 138 bucks. I got the founders edition too.

Looking back when I got a gently used GTX 1080ti it doesn't seem so "overkill" anymore.

I'm still waiting to upgrade, my gtx 1660 6gb is running strong.
If I ever do upgrade, I'm praying it will be Intel Arc A770. But, as a mainly Virtual Reality user, I can get that card just yet.
I really want to ditch AMD and NVIDIA with their greedy pricing.

i had a rx 580 4gb and upgraded to a used 6700 xt 12gb vram for ~300$. for this price, i could only get a new 6600 so i'm quite happy with my choice.
