I have a lot of experience with Zbrush, and the core tools are very similar. Also, through the magic of editing, you don't see me looking for every feature I need to use :)
Ton is awesome! I was in Amsterdam a little while ago and I decided to go to blender studios, as soon as I walk in I met Ton and his dog, he came out to greet me and shook my hand! Such a cool and down to earth guy, his dog is also adorable. The portrait also looks just like him :)
It's fascinating how 90% of artists sculpting famous people fall into uncanny valley of weirdness even in their final renders, yet here the likeness is nailed just a few minutes into the video!
This is top tier! Blender, zbrush, substance, I don't care what you use, thanks for the level of artistry and process you showcase here. I LOVE that this isn't a "hey, I'm a zbrush guy. I used blender but don't really know where things are" tutorial. You know your stuff and while there are some limitations, you showcased a tool in its best light. Bravo.
Up until now I've always thought that blender could only be used for cartoonish sculpts and that it would struggle at higher poly counts. You've successfully proved that wrong, and I can see now that with the right workflow you can absolutely make some great models! A well-made and thoroughly enjoyable video!
Hey dude. It was a very informative, educational and fun process. I am a lecturer at a university. My main branch is Painting. But I learned 3D software by myself and from video lessons. I have been using Cinema4d for about 30 years. I started learning Zbrush during the pandemic period just for Sculp, but compared to C4d software, Zbrush's interface seemed very inefficient to me. I started learning Blender at the age of 60. I think I've come a long way, but there's still a lot to learn. In order to direct my students according to their interests, I need to have at least knowledge in many areas. Therefore, focusing on a certain area (such as specializing entirely in character or entirely solid modeling) is quite difficult both in terms of time and equipment. My general preference for character modeling is box modeling and then detailing with sculp. Thank you for your video, which is a very good workflow example for me and the students I can direct. I subscribed to your channel and I think it would be very useful if you prepare videos for some applications that you cannot include enough in this video. Best regards.
this is incredible!! as a relatively new 3d user, it was fun to follow along and the pacing was not overwhelming. it makes me want to try creating a character asset too!
Great stuff! I like the way to talk over it, just generally talking. I mean it's cool with detailed explanations too but it fit the format perfectly like it was here.. :) Great work, looks smashing!
Hi Stefan, just found your amazing work here - subscribed! 😊keep up the good work. I couldn't help but 100% relate to your note about the background music, and not being monetized, etc. I've had the same struggles and experience!
My humble request to you is "plz make a detailed character modeling course" for us. You are a guru and I am your newest disciple. Thanks for being an inspiration.
I really enjoyed this video, so chill and layed back and the end result is absolutely amazing! I'm just starting my journey with blender and I want to become a character artist one day ^_^ hope to see more of your videos soon!
Awesome work, Stefan! I enjoyed the video, your commentary was very nice to listen to, calm and informative. Thanks for putting this together, waiting for more!
I watched the announcement stream and it looks like tons of fun as usual, but I just have too much stuff on my plate at the moment with work and family life :(. I really hope I'll be more free for the next one. Are you going to join this one? @@3dsmileCG
Truly fantastic artwork. Perfect mixture of realism and style. I tend to feel comfortable in my own blender niche of bendy-bone facial rigs. It's the only thing that keeps me from feeling completely inferior to brilliant sculptors like yourself
a tribute that I would like to make, but technically unable at the moment. I'm glad that other artists in the community are able to accomplish this. Despite the first time, you did a very good job. Congratulations!
I just purchased your Base Mesh and teeth. Looks great! How did you open the mouth? I tried to select the lips and move them, but the whole mouth moves (lips don't separate)
Thank you! Here's what I did: 1. While in sculpt mode, show only the lower jaw using the face set by pressing H while the mouse is over it 2.Mask it by pressing A - mask all 3. Unhide the entire mesh with alt-H 4. Press A again - invert mask, so now only the jaw is unmasked. I think I also smoothed the mask (again from the A pie menu) 5. Place the 3D cursor on the back of the jaw with Shift+Right click, then at the top middle of the screen, choose the cursor as your transform pivot 6. Rotate the jaw down using the rotate tool. In Sculpt mode the rotate tool is at the very bottom, after all the different brushes, so you will probably need to scroll down to see it. 7. Press A again and Unmask all. Then use grab and smooth brush to fix up any ugly deformation
This is REALLY good, thanks for sharing knowledge. Also, the only part I'd make suggestions is the teeth material, the model is awesome but the teeth puts it a little weird xP
Amazing. In a sculpting course the glitchiness could be reduced a bit when you turn off Fast Navigation under the Options drop down under the Render view button. I don't know if that would have helped with color information though.
Great work on this! Looks just like Ton!
Thank you!
"This is my first time sculpting in Blender". Dude plows through it like he's done it 15,000 times.
typical
its the artist, not the tool who does the heavy lifting

Amazing job
Can someone tag him? This looks amazing
all i can say is 25 minutes were not a waste...enjoyed every minutes watching it.
Hi, Mr. Ton Roosendaal. Tons of tons of thanks for presenting Blender to the world.
It's fascinating how 90% of artists sculpting famous people fall into uncanny valley of weirdness even in their final renders, yet here the likeness is nailed just a few minutes into the video!
Its the same for real life sculptures or wax figures of people, no matter how much time you spend you never get it looking 100% like its real life.
This person changed so many peoples life by keeping blender opensource. Unlimited respect for his thoughts. ❤.
This is amazing! I hope Ton sees this :D
Excellent sculpt! I love how accurate you made this, down to the wrinkles and pores and everything
crikey, this is pretty special
outstanding work
not to mention an excellent illustration of just what blender's capable of in the right hands
Wow, this needs to be everywhere!
This is criminally underated your stuff is great!
Agreed.
