I am a hearing parent of a deaf adult whom attended a school for the deaf founded in the late 1800s. The school uses speech and sign together to create a total communication enviroment. I well know the conflict of all inclusive communication as i also have hearing children. These videos are wonderful. You make sign launguage accesible in a way it has never been before. All the language apps available have live video translators to help you learn but NONE teach ASL. Which is a universal language in every country... Thank you for finally giving people access to my sons primary form of communication.
Should we be making videos for TH-cam Shorts and TikTok? If so, what kind of content would you like to see from us? Culture, interesting facts, topical signs, grammar, entertainment?
I don't have TikTok but love watching the Reels on Facebook and some shorts on TH-cam. I think it would be a great way to introduce more people to your videos, website, etc. Many times, I don't have time to sit down and watch a long video but can watch a short one. I try to learn at least a few new signs a day if I don't have time to devote to more and this would be beneficial.
I learned that ASL is preferred over S-E-E. The sign IS denotes S-E-E, so I am wondering why you included it here. Is S-E-E acceptable in some environments?
My toddler is delayed in his speech, so I'm learning ASL from you to help him communicate better, and I had no idea that what I was doing was SimCom. It's a good thing that he's not hearing impared because I'd rather teach him ASL and not SimCom if that were the case. But thank you for explaining this!

But I really appreicate your channel for culture and relevant, up to date supplemental information. I know there's so much more to understand than just the signs. Liz hype! I was randomly recommended her clips & ended up enjoying her content so after a week or two of watching I got the curiosity to learn about ASL & how it works. Which is what brought me to this channel
For some reason, I find it challenging to talk and sign simultaneously, even though I am self-taught. Although I am not fluent in the language, I have always found it difficult to speak English. At the same time, when I sign, I automatically switch off my voice. Speaking in English and signing simultaneously is extremely confusing for me. Additionally, as a general rule, I thought it was always considered rude to speak at the same time unless I was mistaken. I love your content; you make it much more interesting and fun. The tips and tricks are phenomenal because they help you remember how to produce the sounds in the first place

It's really interesting to hear about the pros and cons of this. If i may, there is another angle to simcom that I've exprienced as part of the pro side since I've started learning. My reason that I started studying asl recently is because I joined a hiking group specifically for adults with developlental disabilities (I myself am on the autism spectrum). There's a man there with down syndrome (and possibly autism; I haven't asked), who's semi-verbal - he can speak a few words verbally, and uses asl signs to communicate his needs. I've only seen him do basic signs - food, water, help, bathroom, etc., but I'm sure his ability goes beyond that because you can ask him the sign for a lot of things and he'll show you easily. I started actively learning asl so I could understand what he's saying, and make communication easier on him. He's a sweet guy, and seems to appreciate the effort when people sign back to him (He gets the BIGGEST smile). But even though he can process what I say verbally pretty well a lot of the time (granted that I word it right), I found that doing simcom helps him process what I'm saying a little faster, and especially helps when I'm asking anything more complex than a yes-or-no question. And he's not the only one. There are a lot of non-speaking autistic people in the group - a common symptom in autism is a struggle in auditory processing when it comes to verbal communication. But, when it comes to basic needs signs that are used often in the hiking group, or signs that are rather obvious for what they mean (the sign for "drink" for example), I've noticed that a lot of them have processed things said to them a little better with signs involved, even if they don't sign back (motor skills and hand coordination is another thing autism can affect, so learning to do asl can be difficult). Simply having that visual aspect to communication that simcom brings, has helped me connect with the kinds of people that I've struggled to connect with all my life. Now, I cannot speak for everyone ON the autism spectrum, or anyone who has another developmental/intellectual/mental disability that affects their ability to communicate on the giving and/or recieving end - not everyone who has these struggles are a visual processer; it can vary a lot on where people's skills lie. But it is clear that the sign language vocabulary at the least (if not the full language) can help MORE than just deaf people. And practicing simcom is one of those ways that it can. I do intend to learn asl fully, grammatical structure and all. It's a very fascinating language to me and I would love to be fluent in it in all aspects of the language. But I just thought I'd share my experience in what even doing just a little bit of simcom has done to benefit my ability to communicate with people in my life.

We know people can lose their hearing at any point in their life, so I want to prepare my daughter and myself just in case. She knows so many signs now! We are learning from Rachel Coleman's "Signing Time" together and I'm learning with you, more structure and words. I am curious though, are there any signs that mean different things but are signed similarly? Like "rock" and "work" are very similar. Thank you again for this amazing content!

I use a lot of SimCom because I have a toddler who has a Speech delay so to teach her to speak and identify objects or things she wants without throwing a fit I have to show her "baby sign language" as they call it, but I'm hoping it can lead us to fluent asl.
What are your thoughts on speaking and signing while prioritizing ASL grammar? Eg saying and signing "dog I like I" instead of "I like dog"? I often subconsciously voice while practicing by saying English sentences with ASL grammar.
