The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek is a Worse Value than the Forester (And it Doesn’t Matter)

  • The Subaru Crosstrek was improved where necessary for 2024. Compared to the Forester, the value argument is not too strong. Today, I am going to explain that, why it doesn't matter and show what the pros and cons of both.
    We're also going to largely ignore their respective competitors today, those include the Honda HR-V, CR-V, Mazda CX-5, CX-30, Toyota Corolla Cross, RAV4.

    I'd like to add that the price difference between the two is smallest when you equip the Crosstrek with the same options as the forester! The Crosstrek is cheaper if you go light on the features.

    • @dangerdaaku
      @dangerdaaku ปีที่แล้ว

      I think how Subaru adds blind spot monitoring is just horrible. To get that, you have to spend over $2000. New drivers truly appreciate BSM. And with $2000+, Crosstrek is less economical than other cars in the segment. This is for the base+1 model, where Crosstrek might make sense compared to Forester.

    • @Das_Germaican
      @Das_Germaican ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dangerdaaku considering many new drivers are often kids, perhaps it’s good for them to get in the habit of doing shoulder checks. Especially when all vehicles don’t come equipped with blind spot monitoring.

    • @dangerdaaku
      @dangerdaaku ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Das_Germaican Shoulder checking is a must-learn and a must-follow skill. Said that I have heard quite a few new drivers, young and otherwise, feeling more secure with BSM present. What I find annoying is that Subaru clubs a safety feature with non-safety features, giving no option to just add the safety feature.
      Here is the scenario -
      Mazda CX5, which is a class above crosstrek, has nearly identical safety feature set is almost $2000 cheaper. And the CX5's base+1 has same or super comparable feature set to Crosstrek's base+1 and is available at same price. Some people have specific preferences that only a Subaru or a Crosstrek might be able to meet, but for others this price difference matters.
      Outside all the arguments, Subaru is definitely doing something right for Crosstrek to be the highest selling SUV. So there is that :)

      @@dangerdaaku you can’t use Mazda as an example because then I won’t have an argue. I completely agree with you as Mazda was my second choice. There are brands that don’t include it for that price in that segment.

    We took a Crosstrek for a test ride but found it too small for what we wanted. We then took a Forester for a drive and it was perfect. It wasn't that much more expensive but offered a lot more space and we actually preferred the old style infotainment (buttons and dials instead of big iPad on dash). The seats in the Forester were also much more comfortable. If I were 20, I'd likely be fine with the Crosstrek, but I'm older now, and the larger Forester (which is VERY easy to see out of) just seemed like a better daily driver for us.

    The cargo capacity in the crosstrek, plus the lack of physical hvac, is what kills it for me. There’s more space in a civic hatch for cargo than in this thing. I can see the case for it as a second car, but for people who tote slobbering things, children OR dogs, you’re one large dog or stroller away from that cargo space being useless. Forester has no such issues.
    If they just made the cargo capacity bigger in the crosstrek, I could deal with the finicky touch screen controls for the sake of driving dynamics.

    I had a 2020 Outback Premium with all the options available, and it was a very capable, comfortable, and overall nice ride with plenty of creature comforts. Then, my husband got a 2023 Crosstrek Sport, and it turned out to be so much more fun to drive (and far easier to park in every way). It was also peppier off the line at speed, especially in S drive mode, while also having dual X-mode, neither of which the Outback Premium had.
    Well, I finally ended up trading in my '20 Outback Premium for the '24 Outback Wilderness, and while only the other XT model Outbacks can touch it in Subaru's crossover/SUV lineup when it comes to acceleration while also having even more creature comforts (including a more comfortable ride) than the Outback Premium, I still find my husband's Crosstrek Sport more fun to drive. It just feels so eager to go on adventures if you'll let it, and even with its smaller engine, it might still be able to go places the OBW simply can't due to its much wider and longer stance and decreased approach, departure, and breakover angles. The Crosstrek really is a great car for the money, especially with the 2.5L engine.
    And, frankly, I just never even considered a Forester, because of all of Subaru's cars, it looks the most clunky and dated. It also seems the most likely to tip over on sharp curves and/or in high winds.

    Different models for different needs/wants/expectations. This is almost an apples to oranges comparo, because while there's always some overlap, most of the time folks will buy one or the other based on what they need the car to do for them. A fam of 4 with dog(s) that loves to load up and head for the mountains to car camp, isn't going to find the Crosstrek to be roomy enough for them. And a single person or couple, that lives in the city and loves to go backpacking (way less gear than car campers), isn't going to want/need the larger Forester. This is why a brand has multiple models to choose from, based on various needs of the buyer.
    For me, neither the Crosstrek nor Forester met my needs/expectations, so I went with an Outback Onyx XT. No regrets. But my wants/needs were different from what the person looking at a Crosstrek or Forester likely wants/needs. So again, it's all apples and oranges. This should be more about which is better for which kind of owner, than which is better value for money.

And since we never go off-road (like most Subaru owners) we went with the much better handling Impreza RS. Unfortunately, they did not make the 2.5L standard on the Crosstrek, and the value equation is not that great when you have to spend 30k to get the 2.5L. I still would probably get the Crosstrek, because I dont really need the space and it is smaller and more maneuverable. Toyota, Honda and Mazda have stepped up their games though, and made safety and driver assistance suites comparable to eyesight standard. The CX- and hybrid Corolla Cross are strong competitors. I have a 22 FW and love it, it really just makes so much more sense than the Crosstrek does... even having no kids, rarely having passengers, not hauling pets etc... I tend to use my cargo space consistently. Wireless carplay is easily addressed via an adapter and is fairly reliable. I'd traded a 22 Legacy XT Limited to get back into the smaller screen with physical HVAC controls, the 11.6 is still pretty flawed. I have mixed emotions about the seat heat still being swtichs in the Crosstrek, while it's great they're still physical, it seems like a waste of space in the console and dead space on the screen.
    Fuel economy, my last 3000 miles has been between 27 and 29.5 tank averages with most of it being in the high 27s to mid 28s which is impressive considering the trim. Actually that 29.5 was with a friend driving it in Florida from Tallahassee to St George Island round trip. His first time driving it and everything. Hesitant however since this will be the first model year of 2024 revised Crosstrek and first ones ever made in Indiana. In addition I have over another year left on an extended warranty which has a lot of value itself.
