Looked at both these vehicles recently, found the Corolla Cross styling and road handling to be just blah. The Crosstrek just felt more responsive, better handling, and more safety features. Sound system was fine. So, got ourselves the Crosstrek Sport and are very satisfied with it.

I would like to replace my 2013 Crosstrek (158,000 miles) with a new 2.5-liter Crosstrek or a Corolla Cross hybrid. My problem is that the Crosstrek is so much better looking but the infotainment system kind of sucks. (I'm old and shaky; I like dials and knobs.) Also, the Cross hybrid gets so much better mileage, and I don't have to buy gasoline so often. This is a tough decision.

Test drove limited Crosstrek. You can control AC via voice control. although 2.5 liter, 178 lb torque, get up and go had that lag when accelerating from stop. Also the local dealer added just under 4,000 fee. They called it a Market Adjustment because of a limited supply. I am not getting either but I like the Crosstrek dash more, it’s built in. I don’t care for the stuck on elevated position of the screens in Toyota vehicles.

You should find another dealer, I hate it when they jack up their prices, like Toyota, Honda, and Kia are famous for. I ordered my Crosstrek sport at sticker price through the same person who sold my mom her car. Tell them you will not pay a dime more and walk out.

@@bepowerful2160 I'm sure it does. I sat in the new Prius. It looks sleek and fast, but internal visibility is poor. One sits upright in the Corolla Cross so the angles are better. Sitting low in a car like the Prius would give the result you experienced. The Crosstrek screen, while large and somewhat distracting to my mind, doesn't block the view and sits flush, which is a plus.

i have the corolla cross with 2.0 gas engine. i use extreme driving style to get 5.0L/100km, which is 47 MPG. i never go over 100km/h, seldom let the engine go over 2500rpm when accelerating and hyper mill when ever possible. so l smile when i see the gas pump, and its a different kind of fun to squeeze for MPG.

Excellent comparison review Shari (as always!).
    For clarification-
Did you not recently post a video that confirmed that the Crosstrek's reliability was a little sketchy?
Regardless-over three decades- I have almost always preferred the Subaru over the equivalent gas Toyota.
But- I have always bought the Toyota because of the overall lower cost of ownership and (at least in Canada) better Toyota financing.
And with my personal commitment to reducing Carbon emissions- we have been buying Toyota hybrids for more than a decade now.
We have a 2021 RAV hybrid- incredible power and fuel economy.
I have a Corolla Cross Hybrid arriving next month (ordered in June)- I am selling/trading in my 2014 Prius C. The Prius C was so cheap to drive that it saved my ass during a period where my family lived on a very tight budget.
Toyota's hybrid system is incredible- they must be truly committed to the ecosphere if they are willing to share it with anyone! (Unless we consider Toyota's partial ownership of Subaru...)
    Thank you again Shari!
    Excellence.

I enjoyed reading your insight on the two vehicles!
Though it’s a bit of a different comparison, my Crosstrek Hybrid (which essentially runs the same system as a Prius) is great for saving on gas and lowering emissions despite what some skeptics say about it having a horrible range.
More on topic, I have had the opportunity to drive a Limited 2024 Crosstrek too. I cannot say too much for Toyota. However, I liked how Subaru incorporated many technical upgrades on the Crosstrek with very little change in pricing. While I personally thought the quality of interior materials lowered and I was disappointed by the lack of power-train change, I think the car is very well valued. The Subaru, in classic fashion, also is more capable for challenging conditions than the Carolla Cross by the sounds of it.
Word has it that Subaru will return with hybrid versions of the Crosstrek and Forester around 2025 (at least for the U.S) and I think that should help them a lot. I know that when purchasing my Crosstrek Hybrid we were able to get a tax credit upon purchase.

The extra $3000 for the Corolla Cross Hybrid is a bit much (not to mention the added state sales tax). Even at $3.50 a gallon, I would have to drive it more than 4 years to break even! Nice comparison video! Both seem like nice cars in the category. My biggest issue with hybrids are higher insurance and the fact that if you keep the vehicle for over 100,000 miles, you can expect a hefty battery replacement cost! up to $6000 depending on which vehicle and model you have. That's straight from Toyota but I'm sure is industry wide. Add that to you initial higher initial cost and you are eating up your gas savings!

I'm looking at the 2024 base models (with four-wheel drive) of the Toyota Cross, Subaru Crosstrek, and Honda HRV. Difficult choice. I'm in Canada and only put on about 7,000 km or 4400 miles annually of mostly city driving (rarely going over 40 mi or 60 km per hour) with occasional summer day trips and one longer annual road trip for a family of three, including a teen.We have harsh winters. I've been driving a sedan for years with little problem but a little extra clearance would help on occasion. We live in a fairly flat land of the prairies and aside from our winters, don't have much rugged terrain, nor do we do a lot of camping. I'm looking for the best value proposition out of the three over a 10-year period. Anyone have any advice opinions?

I compared Forester and Crosstrek. Forester has a bit more wind noise, maybe because it''s taller and has taller windows. Regarding power, I easily passed semi-trucks on the highway at 85+mph in my 2.0 L Premium. I honestly think it is a better buy. And the yellow trim and leatherette seats in the Sport are not the greatest. You get that plasticky smell from the fake leather seats. I agree with the review about the disadvantage of touch screen climate controls. You have to take your eyes off the road, which goes against the grain of Subaru's claim to valuing safety. Stay away from Honda HRV. Dealerships are inflating/eye gouging the price by 3-4 K. They will not budge. Subaru will go to MSRP if you really push.

If you want a(n) (almost) full safety suite from the Crosstrek Sport, it’s only $100 or so more to upgrade to the Crosstrek Limited which comes with additional goodies, (including collision prevention, not just warning, in reverse).
Reason being, they package that safety upgrade on the Sport with a moonroof.
So the Limited makes more sense if you don’t want a moonroof and do want all the safety options.

    • @DarianDT
      @DarianDT 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

If you visit mountainous areas or snow regions you'll most likely see Subaru, 4WD, and 4x4 vehicles. Subaru dominates those region markets because of its superior snow-handling capability and reliability. Also, Subaru is a bit more expensive than other cars in these heavy snow regions since they're in short supply and more in demand.
I own Toyota, Honda, and Mazda and my last 3 cars are Subarus. Subaru will be using the Toyota HYbrid engine next year, so I'm leaning more toward future Subaru models.

As always, great review Shari -- thank you! A comment about Crosstrek availability: a conversation yesterday with a Canadian Subaru dealership revealed that Crosstreks have relatively long waiting periods (6+ months) because they're cheap compared with bigger Subarus (e.g. the Outback); the Outback is available either immediately or with a delay of only some weeks. While I can easily believe that the Corolla Cross hybrid is especially hard to get, I bet that high general inflation (e.g. food prices), expensive financing and rising car prices are making any relatively affordable, high quality car in very high demand.

I would have been happy with the Forester Sport, but I couldn’t get it with Tan or Brown leather interior.
I love the heated steering wheel and rear seats. The only reason why I bought the Touring is because of the Saddle Brown leather interior.
After 34 years of gloomy, depressing, drab, outdated, coffin like, boring Gray and Black interior colors being shoved down everyone’s throats from all automobile manufacturers as the standard interior colors, we’re sick and tired of it.
My wife’s Outback has beautiful Ivory interior and the saddle Brown interior is gorgeous in my Forester.
Our 11 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4WD pickup has gloomy gray and boring black interior, so I had it reupholstered in Red with black trim and stitching to match the custom 2 tone paint, (factory Silver over Red metallic). If our Ranger wasn’t mainly used for work around our property, I would have had it reupholstered with leather and added heated seats.

The 25 Forester is supposedly going to be available with the Toyota hybrid system.
Subaru vehicle would perform better and get better fuel economy and performance if they had an 8spd geared transmission.
My 2011 RAV4 Limited 4WD with the 269hp 3.5 V6, 5spd geared automatic transmission got 27mpg on the highway with the cruise set on 75mph.
The best fuel economy that I get from my 182hp 2.5 4cyl Forester Touring is 26mpg on the highway with the cruise set on 75mph.
I only bought my Forester because I thought it would get better MPG.
Heck our 2011 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4WD with the 4.0L V6, 5spd automatic transmission and 3.55 gears in the rear gets 23mpg on the highway with the cruise set on 75mph, after I added a K&N cold air intake and a 3” FlowMaster exhaust. ( It was getting 19mpg before the mods to the intake and exhaust).
I kick myself for getting rid of my RAV4.

@@susansavage8272 We’ve driven Toyota’s for 40+ years. Two years ago my wife was needing to replace her 18 year old Camry because where we built our new house is in a very mountainous area of north central WA state. We get 5-7 feet of snow every winter and live on a private road that we have to plow and maintain ourselves.
She would have to park her Camry 4 months a year (because of the snow) and drive my 4WD RAV4. I would then have to drive our 4WD pickup.
We looked at a new RAV Limited AWD hybrid, but it was subpar over my 11 RAV Limited 4WD. We looked at the Venza and Loved it but it doesn’t have Tan or Brown interior.
Ultimately we chose a Subaru Outback.
Even though her Camry was 18 years old (we had full coverage on our insurance) and the Outback was 16 years newer, we still pay $600 LESS per year for full coverage on the Outback.
Because the traction is superior in her Outback, we started looking around for a late model Forester Touring for me.
In December (2022) I found a 2019 Forester Touring with only 4,700 miles.
It’s a Certified Subaru. I’m a maintenance nut, but the previous owner of my Forester is more of a maintenance nut than I am.
He had the oil changed 7Xs in 4,700 miles.
I had prayed and asked the Lord for either a Bronze, White or Red Touring with Saddle Brown interior. Mine is Bronze with the saddle Brown interior. I now have only 11K miles on it. My wife’s Outback is Cinnamon Brown Pearl with Ivory interior.
In 2026, we’ll be selling her Outback and our 11 Ford Ranger XLT super cab 4WD, (currently only 36K miles), so we’ll have enough money to pay cash for a new Toyota Tacoma Limited 4WD hybrid.
My wife will start driving my Forester and I’ll drive the Toyota.
My wife Loves my Forester more than she loves her Outback and my Forester has fewer miles.

Subaru's terrible infotainment is reason enough not to buy it. This trend of large screens and menu driven touch screens is dangerous. People complain about the Mazda system, but I like it much better because you can use it without taking your eyes off the road nearly as much. The Convenience trim for the Crosstrek is the best as it doesn't have that huge screen and bunch of other content you really don't need to be paying for. I agree with the conclusion on the Corolla Cross hybrid.

Drive a small Toyota for a long distance and then drive a Subaru, then you will see if the Toyota is a better car. Toyotas are amazing cars but, not so comfortable. Subaru is as reliable as a Toyota or Honda. I am in my 4 Subaru after an all time Toyota enthusiast. My daughter still drives our first 2012 Subaru Outback and with almost 300,000 miles. Finally, you can tell that Subaru is a great car brand when Toyota owns almost 20% of the Subaru brand shares.
