  • Jared Freid is a standup comedian and the cohost of The U Up? Podcast, a show about modern dating. The one question Jared gets the most is “Who should pay for the first date?” The answer is messy for some and straight forward for others. The question represents what Jared thinks is the biggest problem for how people date in the modern age.
    Jared Freid is a stand-up comedian based out of New York City, with a strong focus on dating and relationships. His comedy is current and reflects the ordinary daily thoughts of everyone you know, especially if you know a lot of millennials that are obsessing over dating apps, trying to be real adults, and worrying about their bodies. (For the record, Jared’s mom thinks his body is “just fine.”) Jared has a remarkable insight into how millennial relationships (or even situationships) begin and end. Many of Jared's fans say that his advice has helped them in their personal lives. Jared’s fans also seek out his voice in the online publishing world. He’s written for TotalFratMove, BroBible, Betches, and HeTexted. His columns delve into everything from sports to The Bachelor to the pitfalls of dating in the information age. His writing has both sides of the aisle nodding their head while thinking, “I’ve been on the toilet way too long.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. This always makes me laugh. The first date that my now husband asked me on I paid. He had asked me, forgetting that he only had a couple of dollars on him before payday - 2 days hence. Once he asked, he couldn't take it back so he asked to "borrow" it. I laughed and said OK, but he didn't have to pay me back. In he 70's a date could be had in a dive bar for about $5.00 so I paid. True to his word, as soon as he was paid he paid me back along with a nice bouquet of flowers. We've been together since that day - 48 years ago. So, as far as I'm concerned who pays is neither here nor there, it's whether you have a good time or not.

    I loved this TED Talk. One important thing wasn’t mentioned - when a woman goes on a date, in a vast majority of the cases she doesn’t go on a date TO GET A FREE MEAL, we can afford our own food. Gone are the days when only men earned money. I hate to say it but nowadays women DO NOT NEED men! So when we go on a date it’s because we WANT to be with one, and that’s a massive difference! Lots of love to everyone ❤️

    • @skinnyguy7773
      @skinnyguy7773 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's exactly what men are saying also. In an era where vvomen can afford her own food, there should no longer be any expectation for men to pay for dates. You should go and lecture the broke chicks scamming men for free food.

    "Who are you debating?" I'm from Brazil and on the last few days a famous actor brought this subject to light again: "who should pay for the first date?". Tremendous discussions were created about it, and the truth is that this topic should be much simpler... If you had fun and enjoyed the company of the other, the payment won't make any difference ✌🏻🇧🇷🙏🏻

    It's interesting how a seemingly straight-forward question can raise a lot of discussions and provoke several thoughts regarding the equality of men and women.
    Indeed, in many cultures, it is viewed as socially acceptable for the man to pay on the date. Nonetheless, after watching the video, I think that both sides should split the bill equally.
    Or, in extreme cases, everyone should pay for what they ordered. While I do think that, I still consider offering to pay for the dinner a nice gesture, whether it comes from the man or the woman.

    I would invite my dates to brunch. Excuse myself to the restroom, pay the bill on the way. Then at the end let my date know that I’ve already settled the bill, but if they want to leave a tip that would be nice. Perfect setting to get to know each other better without strings or hassle should personalities not mesh.

    Remarkable person reading this.. It’s going to get better; all it is a season of opportunity to grow and be better than before. Challenging times are meant to strengthen us, not to break us. Success doesn’t define to what happened to us; it is how we choose to deal with our circumstances. The more you grow and develop as an incredible person as you are, the more things will change for the better. Forgive more (for you), be grateful for even the smallest things (we have it way better than someone else), choose love over ego, choose humility over ego (humility is strength), and finally, invest into new skills so that your future self will thank you. Our lives will change forever the more we grow. Be thankful for the challenges for we know something greater is coming. Love you always - Nathalie ✨❤️
