I went on a 2-week trip to Sicily on a Rick Steves tour. We were only allowed to bring a carry-on bag, which initially seemed impossible. I brought 2 pairs of shoes in addition to the ones on my feet. It was very liberating to travel so minimally. I'll never travel with multiple suitcases again. No one ever says I wished I packed more.
@@maryokeefe5351 Rick is a bit too minimal for me and my husband takes more clothes than I do. He loves hats a caps and he like to have options with his shoes.
Good choice to prioritise shoes over clothes. It's easy to wash a T shirt or buy an extra but if your sandals break or start to rub its hard to replace them.
I hate being made to do anything. I would have hated that. Let ME choose what I want to bring. What about room to bring home things you buy there? If you are in a small bag already, you can't do that. Two bottoms, three shirts is about all you can put into carry on luggage
I think planning outfits around shoes is a great idea. Shoes are the hardest to pack. I usually wear the heaviest pair, and pack 2 pairs; a loafer or heel and sandal, depending on the season.
For my last trip, I stuck with neutrals-black, white and ecru. I laid out my outfits with shoes, accessories in advance, took photos with my cell phone and it was so easy to get dressed everyday👏👏👏
Thank you for your shoe guidance! I always take a seperate bag full of shoes, even if I go away for a weekend! Not any more! I've written your suggestions in my wardrobe so I don't forget! Brilliant idea!! x
I went on a two-week 'sun' holiday once and it was distinctly chilly. Boy did I wish I'd brought a sweatshirt. Definitely layers, light but warm and multifunctional clothes. Oh, and ALWAYS spare undies in your hand luggage: one day you will be glad of that tip!
I’ve heard so many comments elsewhere about not wearing heels in Europe with all of the cobblestone streets. I’m swapping heels out with some comfy stylish ballet flats!
Due to knowing my style, having a wardrobe of classic pieces, and careful planning I was able to travel to the Antipodes for 32 days in an underseat bag and a LePliage large tote. 17 pieces, including 3 pairs of footwear (boots, sleek loafers, tennis trainers). Added 2 hats, assorted undergarments, and a swim suit. Your channel is a lovely counterpoint to consumption and demonstrates the usefulness of having an elevated sense of presentation - from making a good first impression to cultivating confidence to making travel packing easier. Classic style, for the win.
I wore sandals on a plane one time and I was SO uncomfortable because of the air conditioning. My feet were freezing! I only wear closed toed shoes now and pack my sandals.
I packed 5 pairs of shoes on our recent month long trip to Melbourne Austrlia and I only wore 2 most of the month. So for our next tript to Norrthern Italy Im planning to bring only my trainers and a pair of black loafers. Ive also learned over the years to ditch the dresses and skirts for city trips and wear tailored slacks for dinners out. That way I eliminate the need for heals and can walk easily to restaurants.
Gemma, another great one. I’m a 3-4 shoe person. Flip flops (thongs),slides (mules), loafer, espadrille. One in each corner of luggage. Most difficult is travelling from very cold to hot climate as you have major temperature shift. Yes!! Dress in layers or get one of those coats that folds and rolls down to size of an umbrella. They’re genius.
I’ve been travelling light (carry-on baggage) for over 25 years now. I always start with the climate/weather, the activities I’ll be doing and the formality of the destination(s). I take between 2 and 4 pairs of shoes which can include sneakers, hiking shoes, casual sandals and a dressy sandal/boot. A jacket or cardigan, a compact raincoat and bathers plus sarong/cover-up if warm weather. Always a hat or cap. Around 4-6 bottoms, 4-8 tops all as lightweight as possible and maybe a dress. I include something comfortable for travel/exercise/sleep. Colours are mainly dark (black, navy, charcoal, denim) with patterns/bolder colours on either my tops or bottoms only so everything mixes and matches but isn’t boring. I may take a thermal top, opaque tights, gloves, scarf if needed. White and cream never work for me, they get too dirty and stained - patterns or dark neutrals are more forgiving. I also have a tiny travel towel if needed. I have a small bag of cosmetics (small sizes of moisturiser, foundation, concealer stick, eye shadow, mascara, eye liner, 2-3 lipsticks) and two small bags of toiletries and medical items. Jewellery is my rings, gold bangle, gold chain necklace, 2 -3 pairs of earrings, but leave most at home if a high theft risk destination. A small bag of chargers/cables/plugs plus my e-reader, phone and ipad. One handbag which is my personal item. My makeup purse is super cute and could double as an evening purse. I take a bar of laundry soap in a ziplock bag so I can wash clothes in the sink if needed or spot-clean any marks. If travelling for a long time I buy some toiletries at my destination. I use two small packing cubes for my clothes which keeps my luggage perfectly organised. This system works really well for me, but of course it’s a personal thing.
As for shoes, two pair packed, plus the one I wear to the airport. I love a lightweight, leather sandal in a neutral color. They just go with everything. Once in the past, knowing I was going to a formal event upon arrival, I posted the dress and shoes the week prior and had them received. It made it so much easier. I was still able to travel carry on without lugging formal wear.
Thank you for this and in an ideal world one could pack a few pieces, but clothing is not just there to keep you warm, let alone appropriately dressed for every occasion, clothing is there to make you happy and to express your mood😊 and on my last trip I brought 10 pairs of shoes and all had an outing…choose a limited colour palette (good advice) save all the dry cleaning plastic and cover each item individually, nothing will crease and therefore don’t worry about packing synthetics. Unless you are on a backpacking trip, fill that case (or two) and don’t feel guilty. 😅
I always take at least one pair of clogs - Dansko or Sanita - they are heavy shoes, so I wear them on the plane. Sometimes I take a second pair in the suitcase. I wear those shoes at work as I am on my feet all day. Now I am so used to the support they provide with their special sole that I can't wear regular flats. This winter I got a pair of Dansko Chelsea boots - they are handy as walking shoes and are fashionable, apparently. So, closed-toe clogs in the winter and sandals in the summer, plus sneakers for the gym. I like to walk around for hours when I am on vacation. I had to buy a pair of low heels last time because I wore a dress that evening, they were not expensive.
You said 'pack your hat last so it does not get damaged'. No, if you are taking a hat that cannot be rolled, pack it first and stuff the crown of the hat with underwear/socks so the crown of the hat is not squished. I take two pairs of shoes on holiday, some trainer type (but NEVER trainers with logos or 'flashes') but leather trainers, and a pair of sandals. Every item has to colour coordinate, and work with every other item (2 bottoms, 3 tops, 2 bras, 3 knickers, 2 pr socks, pashmina, cardigan or jacket - and I have never been stuck! I never take PJs, but a top and trousers that are loose and can double up as loungewear). If you take too many clothes it limits your ability to do many things.
I traveled through Italy for over two weeks, and shared one medium (read: small) sized suitcase with my husband (all true) and hanging bag. Two pairs of good neutral comfortable shoes (nice loafers), navy, beige, black and white clothes that could mix and match. Of course the jacket and dress for any occasion. It was wonderful, easy, and we made smooth transitions to our destinations, hassle free. I would never wear a sloppy outfit to the airport, let alone anywhere else. Comfort can be stylish as well. And full disclosure, I was a flight attendant for 20 years, so a little experience goes a long way . :)
I travel a lot for work so I have a pair of smart flats for lots of airport walking, but smart enough under trousers for work. Some days, I travel in a pair of smart trainers, especially if a non-work day, and can use those in the gym as well. When travelling personally, I have either very comfortable loafers/boat shoes or smart trainers for lots of walking, a pair of sandals, and possibly another pair of shoes that can dress up/down. I also agree with carrying a scarf, and making jewellery work to change an outfit.
For the first time ever I only took two pairs of shoes to Rome & Florence for 5 days, 1 pair of boots and a pair of white trainers, I'm usually a six pairs no less when I travel. but having planned a neutral wardrobe it worked. This is great advice.
Plan your wardrobe around your shoes?!!!!!! I wish you could have seen my jaw drop because I do it the other way around and it's frustrating, this is a revelation to me and I cannot fathom why I have not thought of it this way.
Good Morning:-) Great Video. When I went to Barbados last November for my Mum's 80th birthday and my brother-in-law's birthday, I used the 5-4-3-2-1 Technique, packing cubes, and I also checked the weather. For me, it worked. I'm gonna use this technique from now on. Them days of packing 1M+ bits and pieces are done and dusted! I've been guilty of this in the past. Oh, and don't pack super heels, ladies.
Very helpful video! My down fall is my toiletries…my fine thin hair needs several styling products and appliances to look nice. I try to wear hats as much as possible, but for some occasions a hat isn’t a good choice. I wear a pair of shoes and pack two other pairs, so three total. I also bring some slippers for lounging. I get cold easily so I pack more layers than most people. And socks are a must.
I have had fine thin hair for most of my life until it became very thin and made me uncomfortable. So I started wearing wigs. Not the wig for the whole head, but a thing called "toppers" that just cover the top 1/3 of the head with a mesh that the hair is attached to and flows down. I wear one with bangs, it's very cute and realistic, with chin-length hair, and I wear it back often. All I'm saying is that it has made my life so much easier, the hair looks great, and I feel more confident.
Your videos help me SO much. I’ve been following you for a year and I’ve used many of your outfit ideas. A lot of people compliment me for my style and I’ve never felt so confident. Thank you for explaining classical style so well and making it achievable for everyone!
I'm finding 3-4 pairs of shoes is the right amount for myself -- I always wear a "travel shoe" (comfy yet polished, good tread, easy to get on and off at the airport,) and bring the following: 1. Something that can double up as a slipper/poolside shoe 2. A shoe for the weather -- if it's going to rain, it may be an ankle boot. If it's a warmer climate, it's usually a sandal 3. A running-around shoe, like loafers, sneakers, or boat shoes 4. If I'm going somewhere more formal, I'll bring either a kitten heel, or a fun flat to spice up my outfits!
....I am as well... I'm old enough to recall that Women wore Travel suits , men looked stylish ( NO JEANS ) and people didn't look Sloppy nor like they were lounging at home, watching television, when using Air Travel. Saddening, really.
@@texasstardust6010 it is sad. People doesn’t seem to care how they look, they do not take pride in how they present themselves. Their behavior inflight is atrocious. It’s not as civilised as it used to be.
Just came back yesterday from Charleston, SC . I am a very experienced traveler. Over 78 countries , 300 cities in 6 continents . Yet I still made a novice mistake . Charleston is a very sophisticated and affluent city, so I wanted to look classy , elegant like those Southern belles . Long story short , I had to ditch my classy sandals and buy RUBBER BIRKENSTOCKS on King St. I couldn’t stop laughing at myself . This time lesson learned . 😅
I just got back from 1.5 weeks in England and 1.5 weeks in Tuscany. I wore a pair of light sturdy boots and my second shoes were a pair of comfortable loafers. I also had a small pair of flip flops that I wore in our hotel room as slippers, and also for our one beach day
I'm planning a three-day work trip to Arizona in the middle of June, where it should be around 104F during the daytime. I'll choose linen even though it wrinkles and maybe take along a steamer. My first time on a plane since 1996! I'm planning a carryon and a personal item -- it's only two days!
I usually write out a packing list about a month prior to traveling. Then about a few weeks before I go, I start pulling out what I'm going to be taking, and start making up my outfits. Taking pics of said outfits is great.
Great tips, Gemma, especially about wearing comfortable shoes. I wear blazers a lot, but for travel, I’ll wear one of my knit ones, they’re so much more comfortable and spring back better from folding, etc. They’re also washable, so I don’t have to worry about getting dry cleaning done on my trip if one gets a spot or grimy. I have a 40-year old pair of low-wedge leather sandals that are more comfortable than sneakers, so I reserve them for my summer travel shoes. They still look ok for daytime walking and touring, but won’t take many more rebuildings by the cobbler, so I save them for when I really need them. I like to wear sneakers for the flight, and pack my day sandals and a pair of comfy mid-heeled gold sandals for evenings. I have folding silk travel slippers for inside hotel rooms, but they have a thin rubber sole that allows me to wear them on a quick ice or lobby run, too. I take two solid-color, very simple, silk dresses for fancy evenings and a variety of fashion jewelry and silk scarves/wraps to change up the looks, these accessories don’t weigh much or take up much space. Silk, especially in knits, is a great fabric for travel, it doesn’t need frequent washing, dries fast and doesn’t wrinkle much. I’ve always regretted the woven cotton and linen items I’ve taken because I have to spend so much time ironing them, or send them out, which takes at least 3 to 4 days to receive back, often a week.
True, yet I almost never iron linen, as it damages the fabric. I wear each item only once, then hand wash and hang to dry, just smoothing out with my hands. By morning they are dry and look great.
I’m planning a trip to France ( French River cruise for 2 week) and Northern Italy (2 was ) Mid march to mid April 2024, and am determined to travel light and stylishly co ordinated, with a capsule wardrobe, hence watching your video. We live in Australia so our clothing options seem to less choices and we are going into summer here so spring essentials are hard to find now. I’m only taking 3 pair of shoes and went Shopping for some good walking shoes. I settled on a very expensive pair of Ecco trainers that are also waterproof in black with white sole. But I didn’t realise they also come in white ( wasn’t told and weren’t on the shelf at purchase) until too late and now think white would have been much better, and worried that the black won’t look as stylish, ( although they are quite stylish for trainers and have already had comments on them, so I’m trying to decide on what works with them as I will be wearing these the most. I’d like a pair of loafers or moccasin type shoe with sketcher comfort that aren’t sketchers so more stylish, and a pair of nude sling back flats but both of these seem hard to find down here. I’m also looking for a waterproof trench coat - the only options there are through Amazon and most of them don’t even have size guides to work out your size which is very frustrating.. I do have a good navy rain jacket that I had intented to take but felt with the black shoes, and black pants (part of the capsule) it just wouldn’t look stylish so thought a camel trench coat. Also intend only taking my cross body travel handbag, a carryall/backpack and maybe a small clutch. I’ve been researching for weeks and finding it’s not as easy as it seems. I’m planning on 3 pants - black, jeans (so far only comfy ones I can find are mid wash) and can’t decide on colour of the 3rd pair (tending to a lighter grey or beige or camel but that’s not as durable for constant wear/washing. White linen shirt, mid blue and grey silk shirt, red, white and black fine print silk shirt and feel am beginning to think although lovely and light those silk shirts might be gendering other choices. A very light weight puffer (packs down into pocket) a black Dress and possibly a mid blue denim Jacket .That’s about as far as I’ve got so far. Any suggestions??
I now pack two to three pairs of shoes. If I know I will be walking a lot, trainers are my go to shoes. The packing cubes are so handy. It's like having travel dressers at your disposal. Each time I pack now, I get better and better at minimizing the number of items I bring. Thanks for these great tips, Gemma.
I traveled for business, many years ago and I always packed flats, a mid heel and a high heel. Also, for those women who don't have arch/foot problems, a very flat ballet slipper is an extremely useful option for a traveler. As for jewelry, I've kept my selection minimal.
Going on our first cruise next month to the British isles. I’m taking one pair of kitten heels and I bought shoe clips to change the look for different looks, black flats, white casual athletic shoes and lightweight waterproof booties which I will wear on the plane since they are slightly bulky. Hope I’m thinking right !!!!
Wear one pair of comfortable, neutral flats, take one pair of heels or wedges in the Spring & Summer, sneakers, and Ankle boots if you are traveling in the fall and winter. I also pack a cheap pair of flip flops or slippers as the ones in the hotels are always too big! Definitely an umbrella (I'm a Brit so it's in my DNA). A pashmina for the plane, and for those chilly nights or days (looks good over a blazer.
Three pairs of comfortable but different shoes usually works for me. I usually travel with the bulkiest shoes so I don't need to pack them. A dressier pair of shoes yes, but I would never travel with high heels unless I'm attending a specific event that requires them. Additional footwear I always pack: a pair of flip flops or small ballerina slippers in the most reachable part of my luggage so I can wear them inside the hotel room.
When I pack for a trip I usually pack a capsule wardrobe that all works together. It eliminates the need for multiple bags, shoes, accessories & makeup.
Greetings from Canada! Watching this video brought back so many memories of my 2nd international trip, a school group trip to the UK over Easter break. We were instructed not to take more than 3 pairs of shoes, pack all our toiletries in our carry-on (and also clean underwear). JIC our checked baggage got lost or delayed. That was 45 years ago, and I still follow that advice, and I've never gone wrong. I wear comfortable loafers / sneakers for travelling, a pair of dressier shoes or sandals, and a 3rd pair, depending on the destination / climate. The only bad advice we got for trip was that all we needed for outerwear was a "spring" coat. I remember all of us freezing, even though we had brought sweaters. 🥶🥶 Several days into the tour, our bus 🚌 stopped at a place that sold Icelandic and Irish fisherman knit sweaters. I swear that every kid on the bus bought a sweater!! I am sure the shopkeeper was a happy man that day. (I had my fisherman knit sweater for years.) Thanks for all your excellent videos, Gemma! 😀
Thank you! Excellent advice! I can tell u are a pro at this! I do what u do! Carry on r great! I have flown to the East from California 10 times now and have never lost any items! I NEVER CHECk MY BAGS!
First is analyzing the temperatures of your travel. If the destination is mild to warm I take sandals, trainers and flats. Jeans, black jeans and khaki jeans, t shirts, button down, light weight black jacket and Jean jacket. I make sure everything mixes with everything. Minimalist for sure. Simple jewelry on me only. I wear a very small crossbody bag.
Only 3 pairs of shoes in a considered color palette with all things mixing and matching. No matter where I am going or for how long, I pack in a carry-on. Easy to get around with and if I am changing hotels, I can manage my luggage on my own,
I bring five pairs of shoes. Sandals, ballet flats and sneakers. Slippers for lounging and flip-flops or equivalent for the pool/spa. I always wear the sneakers on the plane.
Suggestion- the next time you travel, when you return home write on a journal all of the items you never used so you can pull it out as a reminder in the future
@@cathylehman7538 the last long trip was a month, 15 days on a Viking cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam followed by 2 weeks in England. Our next big trip is a 10 day cruise for Athens to Venice with two extra days in Venice. It’s in October and the climate can be a challenge as it cooler in Venice than the Greece isles. I think I wore everything in that month long trip, and I realized there were one or two items I should have taken with me. I did take too many shoes. Lesson learned there.
The number of pairs of shoes I take depends on the length of the trip and the activities. Last time I took 3 pairs of shoes and a pair of slippers for 9 days. A weekend trip might be 1 pair and slippers.
I always thought it strange when someone says I need to buy a new pair of shoes for the trip. I never do that. New shoes always rub your feet, even if it fits well in the store. I always pick the tried and proven shoes with me on any trip. Usually I wear the walking shoes on the air plane, pack a pair of formal shoes for the office or formal setting, and a pair of flip flops for shower. For clothes, I always plan out a small travel capsule, color coordinated, and suitable for the activities. I had a giggle when Gemma recommend to pack a rain coat or an umbrella, it is so British. I usually pack sunglasses and sun block in the summer as we always go to beach for vacation.
I'm inspired! Enjoyed the video as well as many of the comments. Haven't done a lot of flying in recent years and I find that it's quite tempting to bring too much when not having to go through the airport. But it's still rough to have so much stuff to deal with at any destination, even if driving there. I probably bring 5 pairs of shoes, but am going to try to get it down to three. 😉Thanks for this!
Did 60 days UK, last summer, wore the skirt for 8 days before washing, had 7 tops but could have gone with 5, 2 pairs of 3/4 trousers, 1 pair pants, took 2 cardigans but only needed 1, 3 pairs of shoes all walking types, sandals, sandshoes and a leather pair. Too many underwear took 7, 5 would have been better. Umbrella was the best thing to take, as protected backpack better than rain coat, had a few very cold days in Scotland and arrived in London as the lot of heatwave days and was in the Lke District when the second lot happened. Colours were based around blue and pink.
We always travel carry-on only so 3 pairs of shoes is all I bring. I wear my heaviest/bulkiest shoes on the plane. I have problem feet so I bring sturdy walking shoes, comfortable yet supportive sneakers, and a pair of sandals to give my feet a much needed break after all of the sightseeing. As for non-wrinkly clothing I don't like polyester so I bring all natural breathable fabrics. I may look wrinkled but I'm cool and comfy.
I love shoes, so I'm definitely of the more is better approach 😂 I have been known to take 7 or 8 pairs and will make sure I wear every single pair, just to prove I needed them all. I can carry them all myself and pack neatly and efficiently, so another to ruin my outfits. All is good ❤ I admire those who are able to choose just 2 or 3 for a holiday, I can be indecisive, so take more to cover every eventuality 😘💋❤
I only take 2 pairs of shoes on holiday, I wear one; flat ballerina or loafer while travelling and pack the other eg. Sandals for summer, boot for winter etc. I ALWAYS wear long sleeves and bottoms when travelling because you don’t know what has been on the seats before you and it can get cool. I also now pack a pashmina for travel even in the summer after an experience on an overcrowded night train with children in a FREEZING air conditioned compartment, I had to, in the dark pull out random t. Shirts from our luggage to cover my children that were trying to sleep, a pashmina is super lightweight, warm and stylish not to mention makes a great temporary blanket.
Years ago I was *that* person with x2 fullscale suitcases plus a carry on😂 Now in my mature years it's carry-on and a small backpack purse regardless of trip length (1-6weeks!). 3prs of "shoes" ....Walk-hike-heavier shoes are on my feet. Packed are my dressup-nightlife low heeled strappy sandals plus flip-flops which are for relax, bath or beach! [If I shop like crazy I always snag a cheap suitcase for the return flight and book it all the way home] All your points are so "spot-on", thank you for the refresh
Great video and expert tips, Gemma. For me, it's destination dependent. If I will be city-based, it's generally softer sneakers I can wipe clean with a make-up remover wipe, espadrilles and flats with a sole.
I have 3 pair of shoes with me: the comfortable ones I wear, my hiking boots and a nice pair of flats or sandals. I use packing cubes. They help me stay organized. I also take clothes that I can layer. I enjoy your presentations.
I have worn the same pants flying for as long I can remember. Classy? Not really but not sloppy. 😊Drawstring denim cargo pants, always sneakers. Top depends. I have learned I can travel with just a carry-on and personal item; this is how I plan to travel moving forward. Packing cubes are fantastic and trying compression ones next month. I only needed 1 set of dress clothes in November. June will be a little more dressy with linen blend pants and skirts. Maybe a blazer.
Hi! The best light-weight layers are with cashmere and silk! On 7-15 day trips I have a roll-aboard and smaller bag, plus a neck or waist document holder. Silk-knit tops and bottoms can be used for sleep and layers under light-weight knit pants. Cashmere sweaters , scarf, add to layers! Coordinated layers, as you said, made fall days in France, Italy, Ireland etc. comfortable.
One caution about strappy sandals. I once wore a pair of strappy sandals on a trip to New York City. I thought they’d be perfect because they were nearly flat and quite comfortable. I didn’t take into account two things. First, I walked so much the first few days that one of the straps snapped from the sole due to repeated flexing making them unwearable. Second, the street were so dirty and filled with trash that I was constantly trying to avoid trash touching my bare feet not to mention dangerous items like needles. I went to a nearby department store and purchased a pair of trainers with hard rubber toe caps. Suddenly sightseeing became fun again. After the trip, I threw them away because they were so dirty.
A Great video,I pack accordingly to weather , destination and season. Bring 2 pair shoes 👟 one for all day walking the other is for styling comfortable is a must. Thank you, best wishes to all
Great video, Gemma. I am a terrible packer as I tend to take way too much. I’ll take your advice and scale back next time I travel. Have a lovely week.
Great Video!! I take at least one outfit for a day, because I always want to feel fresh. And - it depends what I have planned - one ore more outfits for evening.
I’m on vacation right now and I forgot my HAT!! 😢 My husband offered to buy me a new one but they are all over $100 at the gift shop and I have such nice ones at home. I’m getting to the pool early to snag a big umbrella 😊
I’m packing yearly for 3 weeks in only one case and every year I downsize and still have pieces that I didn’t wear. I chose 4 Colors with , black and light blue or beige with some pops of coloured accents. 2 pants, 2 blouse on each colour , 2 dresses something warm with a versatile foulard. One hat and 3 max 4 pairs of shoes including my leather flip flops I have that I can use with a nice dress too. I watch a lot of vidéos last years and I learn a lot and still learning. Packing lightly to enjoy heavily my trip. Chose fabric that are light not wrinkles and dry fast if need to wash it. Mix and match every day .
I like travel with a carry-on. Everything I wear is classic and coordinates together. I only take three pairs of shoes including the ones I wear to the airport so I only packed two other pair really if you’re clever that’s all you need. I love your videos.❤
When flying on vacation I always pack lite! Fill my carry on luggage half full! I shop when I get there if I need something more! Plenty of shops in airports too!
Because sneakers are typically the heaviest shoe to pack I wear that to and from the airport (of course to be used later). Great tips Gemma. Hope you are well.
....I take certain footwear, depending on where I'll be traveling to, and how long I'll be there. The last trip I took I took my Cowgirl Boots , trainers, an extra pair of heels ,and an extra pair of heeled boots. and the shoes. I was wearing for my trip, but I drove... I do not fly, I do not like Air Travel. It was at the end of February, still quite chilly most places . The trip was 3 weeks or so in duration, and I took what I needed. Definitely nice leggings, 1 pair of black jeans, a nice dress ( if needed) ; a few lightweight tunic sweaters, and actually had to take a down ski jacket, it was quite cold in Kansas and a few other places.
Great video, thank you. I usually go for blacks or navy blue & whites .. *or browns & creams (whichever suit you best) for all the basic top wear, then add some colours.
Such a helpful video. I am packing for a 2 week trip today. A week in a coastal resort and a few days in a safari park with travelling days in between. I’m going to save, rewatch and make notes. Thank you
When I travel, I usually make a list of the activities I will be doing while I am away, then I match the outfits to the activities. I find this helps reduce how much I pack and I always have the right outfit and footwear pre planned, which helps make the holiday stress free.
I take 4 pairs if abroad - 1 pair each of low heeled and high heeled sandals, trainers and flip flops for the beach/poolside. If holidaying in the UK I might omit the flip-flops.
I take a pair of walking shoes/boots which I wear on board, a pair of dressy shoes like court shoes, and a pair of arch supported slippers! The slippers are often not mentioned but with hotel floors not as clean as your home, slippers are a must for me!
Please talk about how not to pack too many toiletries such as makeup, skin care, sunscreen, costume jewellery, nail polishes, over the counter medications ( when on a cruise), blow dryer, etc. These seem to take up too much space.
My personal tip is to use travel containers for shampoo/cleaser/lotions etc. I stick to only three nail colors - red/nude/transparent so normally I can take red + one of the rest. I try to have miniatures of spf and other products if possible. I pack only prescribed or those medications that Im sure cannot be bought where Im travelling to. As for the hairdryer its normally in a hotel (not the best one, but its there). When I plan my outfits I also choose which jewellery to pack with it, I opt for classic options like perls or statement earing that will go well with many of my outfits
My packing depends on whether we’re doing a road trip or traveling by plane. For a road trip I’ll take as many pairs of shoes as I want. We’re going on a road trip this weekend and I already have about 6 pairs of shoes planned. I have a special, convenient travel bag just for shoes. I usually even take multiple pairs of shoes when not traveling, just when I leave the house in the mornings since I often don’t know exactly what I’ll be doing for the next several hours. A simple coffee run can turn into a hike, a trip to the movies, a walk in the park, etc.
On the flip side, I wear clogs all the time. That's right, those shoes with the heavy soles that nurses and chefs wear. Why? I'm on my feet all day at work like they are. But guess what! Clogs come in many varieties - there's the Mary Janes, so cute! And many sandals, and some boots, as well as the standard "professional" style. Presently I have about 8 pairs, plus I recently bought a pair of wooden Swedish clogs for work! I'm addicted to them.
As a general rule, I pack no more than two pairs of shoes, plus a pair of slides for lounge and beach/pool. I can always make do with those. I thoughtfully select the shoes I wear for travel, so that they can also work with other outfits I pack. That gives me three pairs of shoes, as you recommend. For travel to colder places, there’s always at least one pair of boots, and slipper socks instead of slides. Thanks for the great video!
Very informative video. 3 pairs of shoes that include slippers. I don't like to walk on hotel carpets barefooted. Through the years I have noticed that almost everywhere you go its casual. Even plays. So loafers that are comfortable for winter and candles for the warmer months. Comfortable but not cheap looking.
enjoyed your video. As i mature, my wardrobe improves and I make valuable purchases. Especially liked the running shoes you displayed as well as the jewellry.
3 to 4 pairs 1 travel or walking pair usually a loafer or ballet flats, 1 evening pair probably a metallic that goes with evening, a pair of trainers for working out or a hike and if to a warm place a pair of sandals usually nude or navy.
Shoes on trips: 2 pair. On rare occasions 3. I enjoyed this topic. I know packing cubes are popular. I don't understand how packing in these are helpful. You are adding more to your suitcase. You have to open multiple cubes to get your clothes for the day. Is there a good source that explains why these are a good idea?
I love packing cubes. I’m not sure about saving space, but for me I find that you can pack multiple cubes on top of each other and then can be squished down when zipping up the suitcase. Also, for me, I use it more for the organizational aspect. I really like that I can put tops in one cube and pants in other. So for example, some days I know I really want to wear a pair of pants but unsure about the top due to weather, etc. so I just simply open up the cube with the tops and browse easily to find the top I want, compared to trying to browse through all my clothes to find a top.
Excellent advice. I'm the type that packs. Just in case😂 and end up with too many outfits. This is a huge help fir someone like me..I hate packing and deciding what to take so thank you, Gemma. Less is more !!
I love Rick Steves but not the way he dresses...
@@maryokeefe5351 Rick is a bit too minimal for me and my husband takes more clothes than I do. He loves hats a caps and he like to have options with his shoes.
Minimal packing is very liberating! I enjoy the challenge of looking great with only a minimal number of items.
Great video. I'm always shocked at how people dress in an airport. Comfort is one thing. Sloppiness is quite another. It's incredible.
I’ve seen women in pajamas and slippers, during the day.
Totally agree with you, in other times, people traveling used to dress elegantly
Haaaaaaaa pyjamas
@@lorena-elle that was in the dark ages, now it's leggings and frumpy knitwear
Comfort is important but sloppiness is not my comfort. Thx for sharing. 🇦🇺
I do the same 👍
I do the same thing except I don’t take pics. Thats a good idea b/c for my next trip. I too, will stick to black-white.
I’ve done that too!
Yes!
What a great idea
I take a pair of socks in my bag, and also slippers! Super comfortable
But we also need makeup and hair stuff. I also park a small lighted makeup mirror as I care about how I look too, not just my clothes and shoes.
I have never regretted adding a "just in case" cashmere turtleneck. They are versatile and light. Unexpected weather changes are very common.
I'm finding 3-4 pairs of shoes is the right amount for myself -- I always wear a "travel shoe" (comfy yet polished, good tread, easy to get on and off at the airport,) and bring the following:
1. Something that can double up as a slipper/poolside shoe
2. A shoe for the weather -- if it's going to rain, it may be an ankle boot. If it's a warmer climate, it's usually a sandal
3. A running-around shoe, like loafers, sneakers, or boat shoes
4. If I'm going somewhere more formal, I'll bring either a kitten heel, or a fun flat to spice up my outfits!
I took a caftan to wear as lounge wear. I could even sit out on the terrace in an evening and feel well dressed.
Caftan is a great idea; so versatile.
I’m old enough to remember when people dressed up to fly. 😂
I am a retired flighy attendant. I miss seeing well dressed people on the flight. I see people wearing pyjama pants!😱🫣
....I am as well...
I still do.

I made a similar mistake myself, lol
These are great tips. Those slippers sound fantastic. I haven’t seen anything like them. I prefer to keep something on my feet in hotel rooms as well.
True, yet I almost never iron linen, as it damages the fabric. I wear each item only once, then hand wash and hang to dry, just smoothing out with my hands. By morning they are dry and look great.
Try soaking clothes in the bathtub and then hang to dry. Usually dry by morning.
Excellent idea to choose the shoes then base all outfits around them! Wear the biggest shoes on the plane & coat, of course.
(I had my fisherman knit sweater for years.)
Thanks for all your excellent videos, Gemma! 😀
I love that you use different body types in your examples!! Thank you 🙏🏼
Great video, Gemma! On my last trip I wore a pair and packed a pair in my carry-on bag. Still had room to bring home a few new clothing items!
I dread packing for a holiday . I always over pack. I wish I could get it right
I’m with you, I don’t like it either
So happy that sneakers are fashionable again. I could never wear sandals on an airplane--too cold! Sneakers are the way to go for comfort and style.
I’m planning a work trip to Italy in 6 weeks, this was helpful! Have t traveled much since covid so these were great reminders!
Trying to pack wiser as I watch these videos…so hoping to make 3 shoes work for my next vacation 🤞🏼
As for shoes - two pair in the suitcase - one sandal and one small heel for evenings - with sneakers for travel and wherever else appropriate.
What a great idea about the makeup wipes!! Definitely remembering it next time I travel.
Cashmere sweaters , scarf,
add to layers!
A friend wore strappy sandals when we were sight seeing in Greece and as we walked through a field she got stung by bees or something in the grass!
How disgusting .
I wore white keds to Toronto, they were dark grey when I left. 😮
@@robine6337 Buy black or dark grey next time .

A Great video,I pack accordingly to weather , destination and season. Bring 2 pair shoes 👟 one for all day walking the other is for styling comfortable is a must. Thank you, best wishes to all
Look for tops made of bamboo fabric which does not crease, packs easily and is great in hot weather. Linen is a pain unless you travel with a servant.
Great video, Gemma. I am a terrible packer as I tend to take way too much. I’ll take your advice and scale back next time I travel. Have a lovely week.
Another great lesson video. Usually 4 pairs of shoes accompany me during travel.
Great Video!!
I take at least one outfit for a day, because I always want to feel fresh.
And - it depends what I have planned - one ore more outfits for evening.
I dress for comfort when travelling. Trousers, top and comfortable ballet flats.
I’m on vacation right now and I forgot my HAT!! 😢 My husband offered to buy me a new one but they are all over $100 at the gift shop and I have such nice ones at home. I’m getting to the pool early to snag a big umbrella 😊
Have a lovely time 🏖️⛱️
I’m packing yearly for 3 weeks in only one case and every year I downsize and still have pieces that I didn’t wear.
Wow this was the best how to pack for traveling that I have seen. Thank you. ❤
I bring three pairs or less. I choose a colour to work around and than bring clothes which match for layering purposes.
I take 3 pairs....that is the best option. And comfy lounge wear.
Oh my God I loved the skipping next to the tulips 🌷 Lovely loafers too!
I bring slippers too, I find it too icky to walk on hotel or cabin carpet.
enjoyed your video. As i mature, my wardrobe improves and I make valuable purchases. Especially liked the running shoes you displayed as well as the jewellry.
I usually take 2-4 pair, depending on the trip. I put my sandals/flats/ballet shoes in a 6 pocket wine bag then 1 pair.of some kind of heel.
capsule wardrobe works really well for travel. I only had a carryon bag and was on holiday 5 days.
I take 3 plus ones I wear. I always bring flip flops and or slippers for lounging in the hotel room, pool or public showers.
three or less. flats, kitten heel, and sneaker. perfection.
3 to 4 pairs 1 travel or walking pair usually a loafer or ballet flats, 1 evening pair probably a metallic that goes with evening, a pair of trainers for working out or a hike and if to a warm place a pair of sandals usually nude or navy.
Learned a lot from this video!
And “too many” is answer to shoe question😂
What a great video! Really helpful in both practical and style terms. Need to save this.
