My Mom as a military spouse traveled from one end of the world to another with children in tow. The oldest of ten children she was amazing with ensuring first we did dress properly to the airport for traveled. We were well mannered and each of the older ones had younger ones to pair up with. It was amazing as I look back how well organized she was for us. We boarded the airlines with acknowledging the stewardess with a brief hello and thank you when we deplaned. We settled into our seats and how she knew to ensure especially from Hawai’i to Germany to travel with coloring books and snacks for us. Then you could take food onboard also, so she would pack sandwiches to mini ceral boxes. We were prepared for our landings with ensuring we combed our hair to ensure our clothing was fixed. I am still this way traveling minus the mini ceral boxes. I truly believe this show not only respect for yourself but the appearance or reaction of others to assist would be better appreciated. I know we must have been such a site to see this one Mom with us in tow in the terminals. She was an amazing traveler whether air, ground or train. Which we did all of this. Thank you for pointing this out of being respectful. Mom always noted to dress well did not mean to have loads of money.. As long as your clothes were cleaned and ironed (yes ironed that I do to this day) with your appearance cleaned up then you have everything.

I’m also a veteran and military spouse. I’ve also lived on Guam and done many 35+ hour travel days alone with children. While I disagree about wearing denim, I agree no one should be traveling in their pajamas and flip flops. Joggers, slip on shoes, a long cardigan, and simple v neck tee shirt are my go to for travel days. I never wear jewelry and avoid looking too “expensive”. I’m not interested in looking like a target for scammers or pickpockets. I prefer to stand out less. I don’t want to be noticed for anything good or bad. Neat, clean, comfortable and presentable is my goal.

Great tips. If you do slip on shoes and don’t have TSA clearance so need to take them oof at the airport, consider something you wear socks with. Super gross to walk around barefoot through security.

I constantly see feet everywhere since about a decade ago. I feel the same about people walking around a city wearing rubber thongs/flipflops. Cities are dirty. All I can think is "I hope they wash their feet before getting in bed". I am guessing most do not.

Not wearing socks or nylons is gross regardless. Especially closed toe shoes. Yuck. To me, it's only acceptable in the summer with sandals for a casual occasion.

What wonderful suggestions and spot on. You mentioned not wearing skirts very often. I try to wear a long one every trip because of “co-ed” bathrooms. With a skirt I can pull it up and tuck it under my chin so that I don’t have to worry about a disgusting, wet floor!

One time my husband was traveling by air and he needed to go through security 4 times on his trip. At the time he had a full, untrimmed beard and he decided to shave his head!!! It was summer and he wore cotton slacks with sandals (no socks of course). He was "randomly" selected by security for each for those 4 flights for an extra search and pat down. People do judge you by your looks whether they realize it or not.

    • @BethDjalali
      @BethDjalali  ปีที่แล้ว +5

Right?! There's nothing random when it comes to security. Although, they do get things wrong from time to time.

    • @roxannegordon6162

What do you mean: "no socks of course"??? If I don't wear socks my sandals stick to my feet, causing them to burn. Very painful. My podiatrist told me to spray my feet with deodorant then put socs on. A necessity.

Hubby and I like to dress up when traveling also. We even got upgraded from premier seating to business class from Heathrow to San Diego on British airways 5 yrs ago because my hubby was smartly dressed and looked very European instead of dressing like the typical American tourist. We were getting ice cream after dinner in Paris and after saying Bonjour, the lady start speaking to me in French. Maybe it’s the way I was dressed and the way I said Bonjour. I had to say in my limited French that I spoke une peau Francois, desole. 😊

Totally agree travelling with comfort and class. I travel extensively worldwide and most important is layers. Wear comfortable bra and panties especially on long 10+hr flights. It’s worth buying quality clothes that mix and match and breathable. One item I never travel with is “jeans” personal choice. I have seen my fair share of travellers dressed in pyjamas to super tight and revealing yoga wear.

Helpful variations on my long-time air travel formula. For those 15-hour flights, I start with a shelf bra cami, topped with a tee and a knit jacket. I always add a long scarf or pashmina to cuddle up if there's a long layover. Thanks for the tips!

One thing is practical, but I also want stylish. And you are right, airline personell look at what you wear. If they need to upgrade someone the outfit is everything. I have flown for Scandinavian fo 25 years and I know what they look for. I’d rather sit in Bussiness class in a little less comfortable outfit than a long haul flight in sweats or something similarely comfortable. The companies can’t upgrade you if it doesn’t look like you can afford the ticket.

I got a matching set of navy joggers and tie-waist cardigan in 90:10 cotton:cashmere from H&M Premium. I plan to wear this on my next long flight, unless it’s in summer. I can overheat in pure cashmere, so this is a great fabric for me. I’ll wear it with my white silk, tank or knit tee, and a silk scarf, in case it makes my neck irritated. (I wear and travel in white/cream all the time and rarely get spots or dirty). I probably wouldn’t wear joggers except as a matching set and in basic color like this, it looks pretty polished and not gym-like at all. I want to be perfectly comfortable, wear all-breathable fabrics, but look put-together and intentional. I’l, wear sneakers, of course, with it, and might look for a special new pair for the outfit, but I’ll break them in a bit at home first, just to be sure of their comfort. All the items can, and will, be worn on repeat in my travel capsule, they’re all pretty basic. Navy is “my black”, black makes me look ill, it gives me navy-blue shadows under my eyes and makes me look even paler than usual.

Have a wonderful time in Paris. I'm from Canada and we just got back from Mexico. On the plane I wore my black 'Wonderstretch Straight Leg pants' from Nic+Zoe. They do stay in shape and still look great after hours of being stuck in those airplane seats. Lightweight Keds trainers, black running jacket from Athleta that looks almost blazer like and does not wrinkle at all. Kelly green short sleeve knitted top in silk/linen. On the flights south it's always very warm on the plane. I put another linen top in my carry-on, just in case I was getting to warm and I wanted to change. We left our puffer jackets with the person who drove us to the airport. He brought them again when he picket us up. I love your travel outfits, but found the dress a little short for the airplane. I do not like my thighs to touch the airplane seats. The plane we were on had faux leather seats and one would stick to them.

No denim for me, jeans are the most uncomfortable garments ever, for me at least. I ‘m 62, and I just found my first pair ever that fits, in the men’s department, but I can’t say they’re either comfortable or flattering. I must have a stretchy waist and prefer knit trousers, or a dress/skirt outfit. A knit blazer is more comfy than a woven, lined one. I’ve never been cold on a plane, I’m usually too warm in most places. I do always wear socks while traveling.

Loved them all and hopefully your time in Paris is wonderful! I live in the midwest and often travel to see my kids in NYC so generally a large, long, puffer coat is pretty much the way I must go. The Veronica Beard blazer is just adorable but when it's winter in this part of the country, I need my Marmot or my LL Bean extra long coats both at take off and landing. Christmas will be in Vienna which is so exciting and again, puffer coat is a necessity. Thanks Beth. I'd love to see your favorite cold weather options.

It might not be fair, but it is true, people judge what type person you are by how you dress and present yourself. Similar situation with my daughter in Paris. She was' too casual' for my liking but when talking to airport, hotel, etc., presenting yourself well gets respect and taken seriously. You don't need to spend a fortune, but copy smart outfits goes far. Thanks for your videos. I'm 77 and will continue dressing and presenting myself for desired treatment from others.

Beth what a great video! I just loved all your selections. I just recently traveled & always notice the smartly dressed people . I also notice the people who look like they are traveling in their pajamas . There is no reason for that . Have a wonderful trip , can’t wait to see the pics.

Whether I'm traveling or not, I often wear Athleta bike shorts under my dresses. Prevents chafing and provides two secure pockets. Athleta clothes last forever. I've never regretted a purchase.

This was a great video, I’m heading to Florida this week so it’s timely your video popped into my feed. I’d like to add that besides looking classy and chic, I also choose my airport outfit with safety in mind. Shoes that I can run in, never a skirt or shorts since the less bare skin the better, and typically non flammable fabrics.

thank you for this lovely video.
I am careful of traveling in denim jeans.
I don't wear tight jeans and I'm tall, but once, on a long haul flight, my legs started swelling and tingling. I was desperate to take them off and had no back up bottoms in my hand luggage.
eventually a very kind air hostess took pity on me and gave me a pygama bottom from business class ( which I returned after the flight)...
so please be very careful of jeans, when traveling economy.

I agree that dressing nicely but comfortable is the best for travel. I don’t agree with wearing sweatpants on a plane for anyone and especially if you have a bit of weight on. Also her recommended clothing brands are outside of most people’s budget. You can do pretty much the same look with good, but less expensive, clothing brands.

I wear knitted silk short-style undies under a lot of my clothes, they’re incredibly comfortable, soft and breathable, can’t ride up and are completely no-show (because they’re waist-high and have no seams or hems across the hips or derriere), even under thin-knit dresses (which I love and wear a lot) or leggings, which I sometimes wear at home. They’re perfect for any trousers, skirt or dress, and I don’t have to wear a slip with them under my beloved skirts and dresses (my day wear 95% of the time); the nude ones just disappear even under white bottoms. I have some black ones, too, for under dark colors, which I don’t wear as often.

Said it before and saying it again. This is my favorite hairstyle on you! Thank you for the suggestions. I logged a lot of miles before retiring and generally wore suits when flying as I was headed to business meetings. You are right, the airport staff and flight crew do treat you with added courtesy. The only thing where I differ is the dress. I don’t like my skin to touch the seats. I know I sound like a germaphobe but it is just uncomfortable to me. I prefer capris or linen slacks. Thankfully I don’t have to use the loo even on long flights, but I understand many do so always get a window seat then I don’t have to get up and down to let others out.😊

Your comment regarding the airport personnel noticing one's outfit is so apropos. It had never occurred to me until recently when I wore some nice earrings and necklace and bracelet with a regular outfit that was more toward comfort I would say than style. BUT they saw me and waved through the security which was nice. My sixth sense told me he was noticing my accessories. NOW having seen what you've presented in this video, I'm sure that was what was occurring. THIS is going to help me to understand that although passengers look like s*** nowadays-- pardon my French-- it's worth dressing nicely for oneself as well as for the people working there. They have to look at all these very poorly dressed Americans in their gym clothes & poorly fitted attire and it must be so depressing for the people working there . So we'll give them a nice view if a better dressed woman😊 to gaze upon.

It is true that a person gets better treatment if you are dressed nice ! But I still won't travel on a plane. Hope you had fun!!
