  • Ciao everyone! Today I'm sharing 5 rules to follow if you want to level up your carryon only packing and travel style! It's a debrief of my travel capsule for 2 weeks in Europe! I traveled to meet my podcast hosts @Christinamychas & @UseLess_dk for our @SustainThis_Podcast !

    On this channel, I share #slowfashion and #sustainablefashion tips that center around how to #shopyourcloset, and restyling pieces you already own. I also spotlight brands that I believe in every now and then. I believe in #creativityoverconsumption, and that we all have the power to be conscious consumers.

    This was massively useful so thank you! Especially for mentioning “carry on only “ is not necessary. I will say…the bigger bodied you are, the harder it is to adhere to a carry on. Bigger folks have bigger clothes that take up more space. But I’m loving these formulas. Separates really help make this work

      Jenny, I’m tall and a 12-14. I’ve found separates are my best friends; various silhouettes for the bottoms, including a skirt or 2, really helps make many more outfits than packing dresses. For example, a solid black top can make a black bottom look like a “jumpsuit” and with a skirt, it can look like a “dress”. Since following Alyssa and Christina Mychas, I found my packing method and my total outfits has really evolved. You can do this 👍👍

      Also, being bigger myself, try to pick fabric that is thinner. Sounds silly, but it makes a difference. I did 10 days in Spain in carry on only, but it took quite a bit of thinking about what I would really wear. And it was April, so the weather was questionable, so I had to allow for cooler temps cashmere was my friend!

      @@shaleighreynolds3494 Yes! I'm mid-sized (straight or plus depending on the retailer) & I just packed for a 2 week trip to the tropics (beaches, mountains, rainforest etc) with only a carryon!
      I packed lots of silk separates (tops & skirts) plus double duty pieces (i.e. dresses that can be worn open as dusters, swimwear that works for hikes).
      Tip: if it's suitable for swimming, then it's also suitable for sweating! My husband now wears his swim trunks (shorts) for trail running lol.
      Anyway I totally get how it's harder to do this with different bodies and climates, but I've also gotten away with carry-on only packing to the UK by wearing my coat, thick jumper & boots on the plane. (I even pack slippers to wear through security, in-flight & in the bathroom (once I get to my destination) so that I'm not sweating in my boots at all times lol.

    After having my luggage lost for 4 days in Rio and having virtually no time to shop for clothes, I've become a carry-on only traveler with one exception: If I'm on a direct flight and I don't have to lug my bag around by myself. If you're going to a place where you'll be using trains, subways, etc., a carry-on is much more manageable. It takes more planning, but it allows for a lot more flexability--and you're not stuck waiting for your luggage.

    My tip if you do check in a bag- attach an apple brand AirTag. You’ll be able to tell the airline exactly where it is if it does get lost. I also stuff my runners with my socks and other small bits.

    Great video again! I always pack one nice blouse for evenings out. After wearing basics every day, it feels special to put on a pretty blouse, even if I’m just wearing it with jeans. It makes for a welcome change from my daytime travel outfits. I have some that pack down to almost nothing and don’t wrinkle, so are easy to include in my carry-on! Similarly, I pack one pretty silk scarf - it easily dresses up my basics!

    I watched and used your 333 packing video for inspiration for my recent trip to Greece.
    It wasn't as successful as yours & I learned some things. But it's mainly because it started off much colder than the forecasted temps! By the end I'd worn everything I brought except the pair of Birkenstocks, so overall I was quite happy. There are maybe 5 changes I'd make next time, leaving the birks & my hiking boots, adding 1 or 2 long sleeved layers - I had none except a wool jumper.
    Tip - if you use more than one tray when going through airport security, put one bag of liquids in each tray.

    I travel for 2 to 3 months at a time in Europe in the summer, and only carry a carry-on and one large pocketbook, the type that you could put under the seat in front of you. I’ve done that for five years straight since I retired and I’m a bit tired of my outfits by the end of the two or three months, but the convenience of not having heavy luggage is just wonderful.

    • @stephallen9819

      @@stephallen9819 Yeah I always travel carry-on only to my destination but then pack a softer bag inside it so that I can check that in on the way back. I put all my souvenirs & stuff acquired on my travels in the new luggage - even if it gets lost, I'll be at home anyways. So not only can I pick it up without problem, it's all the stuff I'm not yet as attached to (because it hasn't fully integrated into my wardrobe yet), so it's easier to let go of if it does ultimately go missing!

    Thank you! I work for an airline. I loathe to check a bag. Unless you have children or have medical devices, I would never check a bag for a week long trip.
    Also if you are like me and shop at vintage or second hand shops, I would leave some space in your carry on if you can. I will sometimes pick up a second hand bag at the thrift store to store my finds and then check that on my return. It isn’t a hack. I just accept that I will find something that is required for my ideal closet.

      You could also pack a collapsible/ flat bag and use that as your personal item on the way home and put your handbag inside that if it’s a few smaller items!
      I’ve also used a backpack as my personal item and put a smaller handbag in there with leaving room for items to take home. Both can work if you don’t buy big and have a little space to spare!
      Agree- I never check bags anymore. Used to be an overpacker, but never used majority so lesson learned. Carry on only here on out!

    • @JBUHJBUH
      @JBUHJBUH 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@heatherb9853 Yup I do this! Since I'm just heading home, I'm not as stressed out if my bag gets lost, because it can be delivered to me whenever (compared to anxiously hoping it'll arrive before you jet off to your next destination).
      I also pack any souvenirs in my way-back-only checked luggage, since I won't be needing them on the flight (& thankfully I have understanding enough friends if something I bought for them is still 'in transit' lol).

    I have two navy linen button down shirts in two different sizes and also two cream linen ones in two different sizes ( I used your discount code for POMP ) I hate to layer an oversized shirt under a sweater thus the two different sizes. I have been so inspired by your fashion sense and now that I am in a position to afford quality items I wanted to make sure that my new wardrobe not only reflected my personal taste but one that went together well and would mix and match. I am so glad that you finally took my suggestion, when I said that you were missing the black combat type boots in your wardrobe, and you finally got them and been wearing them full force ever since in your looks.
    I am definitely going to put what I learn here from you to practice when I travel for the weekend for my son's wedding coming up in May. The exception is that I will have my mother of the groom dress in tow.
    I had my stuff taking by TSA and that pissed my off because I had just bought them for a 21 day stay and so they were used and there was around 4 oz or less left in each bottle. But they did allow me to take around a 5# of Epson salt package I bought when I was there on to the plane.

    I find carry-on impractical for Australian travel for work and/or holidays, especially when going overseas. We are limited to 7kg total, even with a super light bag, it's an incredibly restrictive amount. However, I do limit my bag size for checked luggage. I've been lucky, and my bag has only ever gone missing once, for four days. Luckily it was on my return home 😅 Thank you for this review of your travel capsule, Alyssa. Very interesting and informative.

      I was going to say the same thing! When I lived in the U.S. it was much easier to travel with carry on. We got caught out on a trip Adelaide, and it was so expensive to be only 1-2 kgs over. So as a result, we always check bags in. It's a shame.

    • @annabb4016

      And same in New Zealand, 7kg 😮

    • @JBUHJBUH
      @JBUHJBUH 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hmm interesting, I've always had a 7kg carry-on limit for international flights (5-6kg for budget airlines, but then I'm not flying as far or for as long with them, so less stuff is needed anyway).
      I believe it was only when I went to Brazil that they gave us 9kg. Any more than that & I wonder how people are dealing with lugging around that much heavy stuff through the airport and how they're managing to schlep it onto the plane (not to mention getting it into the overhead bins)?
      Edit: Maybe I'm just weak lol?
      But then again I'm in the airports for minimum 16 hours at a time, so dragging anything more than 7kg around with me for that time (plus transit to & from the airport) just sounds like torture!

    I liked your point about the non-neutral, just so you can mix things up a bit and not be bored. I have an eggplant-colored sheer long sleeve blouse that is loose-fitting and can be worn in many different ways. It's light and dries fast too. Another thing I always try to pack is at least one super comfortable garment I can lounge in, but it can have multiple uses...like a pair of joggers when it's chilly (I guess leggings can suit a similar purpose for some) and some cotton pajama bottoms for warm weather (can be worn as a beach cover up, for example).

    • @VBoo459
      @VBoo459 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Exactly this, tbh I go by the rule - if it doesn’t drip then it’s not liquids because those have never been called out for me. Ie. Vaseline, lip balm, powders and lipsticks.

    • @JBUHJBUH
      @JBUHJBUH 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah I've never been stopped for powders or sticks. I've had some over-eager younger airport security agents try (usually male, who sheepishly admit afterwards they know nothing about makeup haha), but then a supervisor comes over & just waves me over lol.
      The only one I'd be careful with is gels (like Vaseline). I don't carry them myself but I've seen others have to toss them.
      Lastly, be careful about what you buy *after* check-in too. I've had a few instances where there were additional security checks *at* the gate of the airport, so I always drink my water before then (there's usually toilets in the waiting area past the gate). This wasn't just on budget airlines - Emirates does it too at Dubai airport, just FYI.

    Great, useful content as usual.
    I bring sample-sized toiletries and makeup products when possible. Use & toss, which is better than collecting dust in a drawer at home. When I need additional products, I decant into the smallest container possible (containers with seals). I place all 'wet' toiletries into a 1-quart sized baggie. I spent 3.5 weeks traveling in Europe before with this method. Do a dry-run at home to see how much of any product you need for the duration of your trip. Liquids are so heavy, and paring down what I bring is so much easier. I even decant my solid stick foundations into tiny jars that take up a fraction of the space and weight of the original container. All the solids & other miscellaneous toiletries go in a 'dry' bag.
    Travel is a great time for self-care, so take it with you, but keep it tight! Enjoy!

I'm actually heading to Peru for a week-long trip in 5 days and for the first time I found the carry-on only packing a bit challenging. Mainly due to the large range of temperatures and altitude switch between areas we're travelling. Also Peru is more casal and I'm a dressy person which is another challenge. I’m also going without my husband as this a special trip with my parents. That means I won’t have my husband with me (which makes me feel scared!) to help carry items through the airport and around town so I am trying to pack as minimal as possible but it’s important to me to look put together. This specific video has helped me feel a bit more relaxed and it’s my first time hearing about the 333 method. Thank you for sharing this. I decant my liquids into contact lens cases and use a pencil to label the lid. I find that I can carry my normal skincare routine and the makeup I want when doing so. One well is enough skincare for 5 days (at least for me), and since most of my trips are around that long it works great. I also use bars for soap, shampoo, and conditioner, and I prioritize my travel sized liquids to save space. My retinol and moisturizer can be decanted, but I don’t like running out of sunscreen and my travel setting spray is as small as it gets 😅

    Love! I am going to the Caribbean (multiple destinations) for dance and although I will check a bag, I still need to be efficient when packing and these were excellent tips. Last time I went, I felt I took plenty of basics but not enough clothes overall and nothing “special” for evenings, which meant I had to get creative and embrace the simplicity of my looks, but this time around I think more standout pieces will bring me more joy. Vacations should be fun and memorable!

      Accessories & makeup make a huuuge difference with a simpler base outfit! I always pack silk scarves & a belt for this reason!
      Also, depending on the type of dance that you do, could you just repurpose some of those pieces for eveningwear? I'm envisioning a sparkly top (like a leotard or long sleeved mesh piece) worn with simpler bottoms.

    I live in Ottawa and have exclusively used a carry-on for travelling all over the world (including month long trips to Asia) for the past 15 years and I’m usually the best dressed. I never travel in the summer, so I wear the heaviest clothes for the flight. I should add that I’m only 5’ tall, so I can probably pack more shoes than if I wore size 10 shoes 😊

    Thanks for the great tips, Alyssa. We travel a lot, for mostly five to six weeks at a time. And even though we bring carry-on size roller bags we always check them. My challenge is always balancing city outfits with hiking and walking in the countryside outfits. Because we almost always rent apartments or cabins and eat in, I end up bringing only one smart-ish outfit for dinners out. Thought I had nailed my packing list for Portugal last October... turns out that nothing I packed except for two tank tops was suitable for the 30 degree C weather we had. :(

    Heading to Georgia and North Carolina soon for 8 days. My husband is being recognized for his work and there will be a fancy dinner. We need to do carry on bc of this and also a quick flight change in Denver. I’ve already been setting out my items and even bought a clothing rack so I can see the items. I keep adding to the rack unfortunately so your tips may help me whittle it down. My past few trips I’ve over packed and I was hoping not to do the same this time as I find it overwhelming to pack and repack when you have too much stuff while moving around locations. Also hotels don’t supply enough hangers or closet space usually so it’s challenging to keep clothes looking good. I’m going to purchase a travel steamer and see how that works this time too.

    I just had my best ever travel capsule with me consisting of 7 pieces and 2 pairs of shoes. I’d be able to create over 30 outfits from those for a wide range of temperatures and occasions. No need for a carryon, they fit in the personal item, too

    • @JBUHJBUH
      @JBUHJBUH 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wait when people say 'carry-on' only, are they classifying that as *separate* to the personal item? Because I'm literally *just* travelling with a carry-on backpack (for most stuff) plus a belt bag for personal items (which I'd rather keep on my person).
      I'd never dream of pushing the boundaries further than that! In fact, I literally keep an extra soft bag *inside* my backpack just in case some 'over eager' airport staff tries to give me extra trouble for it.
      Sorry to say (because I know many won't be happy to hear this) that I think privilege plays a role in how much you can 'get away' with this. Travelling with white friends, I've unfortunately seen how airport staff literally change their demeanour when dealing with me VS them.

    We took a trip with friends to Europe who were very proud of travelling with “only carry on”. But they also had a (pushing all boundaries of size) a personal item, and several miscellaneous bags of junk. It was so difficult switching trains and planes with them because they had so much stuff. I see a lot of travellers with carry on do this and wish airlines would crack down. I usually travel with a midsize checked bag and a personal bag that fits under the seat in front of me on the plane. I have basic toiletries in my personal bag and a change of clothes with a couple of pairs of underwear. This always works out for me.

    • @JBUHJBUH
      @JBUHJBUH 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah I don't get this - it just seems to be more hassle than it's worth. When I say I fly 'carry-on only' I literally mean just a backpack, plus a belt bag for my personal items (because women's clothes *still* aren't being made with pockets, lol...)
      I do pack a softer bag inside my backpack though, just in case any over-eager airport staff tries to give me grief at any point. I then use it as my checked-in luggage on the way back home *only* , for any souvenirs or extra purchases.

    I am 'mentally preparing' my items for a 14 day trip to Ottawa, in April 🧳I think that's still on the colder side, like your recent trip to Denmark and the UK. Am packing my running gear too but don't want to use my running shoes as part of my "capsule" as I'll be attending a conference plus some potentially elegant soirees. Any tips re footwear in this case? I feel like one pair (apart from my runners) is too restrictive, given the cold and rainy forecast.
    + I have exactly the same issue with the liquids, and that's pretty much the only reason why I decided this time to book with a checked luggage. The mini bags for liquids don't cut it for a trip longer than a week.... I managed with carry on (just about) for a trip to Kenya last year, but it felt very restrictive and I had to abandon my skincare routine for the duration of the trip...
    Many thanks for the great content - as always!! ❣

    Great tips here. Thanks! I'm committed to carry-on only and tend to pack sparely. Somehow, over a 3-4 week trip, I end up with a fair amount of detritus that's useful but can add up. These can be things like maps, a book I pick up, brochures for a place I want to return, and even small gifts or beauty products I want to try. I'd welcome suggestions on how to manage these items and whether they're worth bringing home. Often I'll find them useful to try and I'm now a serious fan of products found on my travels.

      IME, jeans and a nice top are fine for dinner out in any European country. Unless you are attending a specific occasion, you’ll be fine. If you want to dress that up, just use a stand out necklace, bracelet or earrings (not all three tho’ unless that’s your jam) For me, the most useful item is a black skirt that can be ‘gussied up’ or just worn daily. With a light blouse in warm weather, a sweater in cooler weather.
