  • Puppy Training - How to Correct Unwanted Behaviors // So your new puppy needs some obedience training. Puppy training can help you teach your dog better behavior and stop bad behavior. Dog obedience focuses on stopping barking, stopping jumping and so many other unwanted behaviors. Your puppy’s behavior stems from the kind of dog training they receive or don’t receive. You don’t have a stubborn puppy or a defiant dog. You have a puppy that needs to learn how to stop barking, biting, and having accidents in the home. Disciplining a dog should look more like teaching your puppy what to do instead, not scolding, correcting, hitting, or punishing your dog. If you’ve ever looked up “how to fix my dog’s behavior” then this video is for you.

    Shaping and lure training are new to me. All of our dogs have be trained using the correction method. Our Malinois is almost 5 months old and is doing well despite my lack of knowledge. I have noticed my partnership with him is much better using shaping behaviors. He actually believes I am the alpha and looks to me for approval. I needed to see this video right now. I love my 11 week old pup, but today he was giving me such a hard time. Biting, getting into places he shouldn’t be, peeing everywhere. Normal puppy stuff, but on a higher setting today. I never hit a dog, but I have made the mistake of grabbing his snout to avoid being bitten a couple times. He probably just had too much energy from being in the pen for most of the day while I worked, so I should’ve expected this. I’m definitely checking out that Better Behavior workshop if it’s still running 😅

      We have a five month old female lab pup that goes SUPER crazy at the drop of a dime when playing outside or going out to go potty. She jumps uncontrollably and then begins biting at me constantly. I’ve tried the things I know to do and am getting nowhere. This happens after she’s been napping or if she’s been in the house for a while and in need of playtime …. So I’m unsure if she’s under or over tired. I’m sooo frustrated 😢 Any suggestions appreciated

    There's a fair amount of human training involved :) I've subscribed to "30 days" and worked with our new little guy, but I keep coming back to videos, because I have to keep being told not to reinforce unwanted behaviors and lower expectations. Thank goodness Michele's videos train me what to do, and aren't just 15 minutes of "Nope. Unh unh. Ouch! No! Unh unh!"

    I have a 9 month old cattle dog/pit mix that I adopted from a rescue (they told me he was over a year old). He's very sweet, but a high energy handful! lol. I live in a condo in a big city and he barks at everything he hears. He also gets the zoomies at night. I love him and am working with him diligently (already gone through a basic training class), but I've never had a dog this young. Any advice to stop the barking would be appreciated! leash biting is my #1 annoyance. She jumps and chomps on the leash, tries to play tug, I don't even know where to begin. Advice i've been given is to take it as play and stop that, but often she starts while we're crossing the road and not a place to stop.

He will start chewing on it for a short period of time and then comes right back to biting me.
    How can I stop or correct him. My hands and body are getting bite marks and bleeding everyday!!!

      Pups love to explore the world with their mouths. Just like a baby wants to put everything in their mouth, so does your pup! Make sure to always redirect your puppy to an appropriate chew toy such as a marrow bone, antler, or Kong filled with something tasty (you can even freeze the Kong to make it a teething toy). You have to make sure to make the toy fun and engaging instead of just stuffing it in your pup's mouth. If you redirect your pup and they consistently return to biting you, then it may be time to evaluate if they need to go get rid of some pent up energy, whether that is mental or physical energy. Take them on an age-appropriate walk or out to the backyard for some zoomies. Play some training games to burn off that mental energy. Keep in mind that puppies can also get overtired and cranky if they have too much stimulation or physical exercise, especially paired with a lack of mental exercise. Your pup may need to go down for a nap in the crate! Be aware that teething kicks into high gear usually around 3 to 4 months. You may even see an increase in chewing and biting around this time.

      Another tip that can help you with biting: Pups are also drawn to movement! This means that when you’re walking, trying to pet your pup, playing down on their level, or even if you pull away quickly when they are biting, they are going to act like little land sharks and bite even more. Remember to constantly approach with a toy in hand and keep your pup on a leash so that you do not have to grab them and add to the frustration/frenzy. Puppies like to chase and nip at cats, kids, other dogs, etc...cats run away, children move sporadically and are lower to the ground, other dogs move quickly and can be a lot of fun! Remember, these are natural instincts and not your puppy being bad out of spite! You just need to teach them what you want them to do instead! Check out these videos all about puppy biting and what to do:
      Puppy Biting Tips th-cam.com/video/bn1nGZ9MgzQ/w-d-xo.html.
      Stop Puppy Nipping and Biting: th-cam.com/video/xE8cX0RIoPY/w-d-xo.html
      Puppies and Kids: th-cam.com/video/_4WlMg8lfs0/w-d-xo.html
      When it comes to biting, we really have to focus more on what we do want to see and build values in those behaviors in order to extinguish the ones we don't like. If we are becoming reactive/corrective (meaning we are only working through this when the puppy is already biting) we are actually going to reinforce the biting because it initiates engagement from you.
      There isn’t one thing that will make biting stop, there are several things that need to happen when working on teaching the right behaviors instead of biting. They are all like pieces to a puzzle that fit together. It does get worse before it gets better, but with proper training it can be managed until it goes away. It won't go away on its own, and may get worse without training.
      We have several games inside the 30 Days to Puppy Perfection program that help your pup learn alternate behaviors to biting: 30 Days to Puppy Perfection:

    I Need this! My 5 month old wheaten has been “naughty” lately- but I know he just needs training and love! He’s so smart but lately has been regressing and causing lots of stress for my husband and I. He has started biting us when we try to pet him or if we need him to do something. He ignores us and walks away when we try training cues unless we have treats in hand- but only does it if we lure him with treats (he used to do things without treats because we started weaning). He’s started whining and barking in his crate- he used to not. He has had a crate aversion and leash aversion randomly pop up. We cannnnot break his jumping habit and it’s starting to cause problems with my little baby family members. He is laying down on walks. He doesn’t know how to calm down. A lot of these we’ve worked with him but so we are also at a loss for many behavioral issues. It’s been SO frustrating for us and I’m sure for him too 😢 We Need a lot of work but don’t know where to start and feel we are unfortunately going to have to untrain some behaviors first before we can effectively train in the good behaviors again. It’s so difficult since I feel we spend so much time training him, exercising him, challenging him, encouraging rest and naps, etc. Thanks for letting me vent - and thanks for the video!

    How do I teach my ~ 1 year old puppy not to dig holes in my yard? I get not hitting a dog, but even its mother would physically correct it when it did something mom didn't like. So how do you communicate to a dog what behavior is not acceptable when there is no "positive" alternative? Or what about when the dog is clearly pushing boundaries and testing its place on the hierarchy? When a puppy loses it's mind as puppies do, how to you get it's attention and remind it who alpha is?

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  ปีที่แล้ว

      The alpha concept has been proven to be false when it comes to canine behavior. Research shows us that dogs learn best from positive reinforcement and teaching them what to do instead. When it comes to digging, this is a natural behavior that is good for dogs. So we suggest finding some ways to let your dog dig in specific spots or with specific toys. At 2 months old the world around your pup can be very overwhelming! If your pup is on a leash, it’s important that you learn the “close to me, best place to be” game. This game is covered in great detail inside our 30 Days to Puppy Perfection program. It’s the at-home, online puppy program to help you and your puppy train together.
      howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course/
      If your pup puts on the breaks and you keep saying things like “come on, come here” and you don’t get any response, you are now undoing what the command means and not getting the results you’re hoping for. If you take a step back toward your pup and release the pressure on the leash, your pup will have a hard time learning to move forward.
      If you’re trying to give treats to your pup on the walk and pup won’t take them, it’s because the distractions going on around are too high, no amount of information you’re giving can get thru to pup at that moment. Training games need to start at home and gradually add in distractions so when you’re out on the walk, the games come naturally and pup is eager to play them because they are familiar. The training games are all covered inside the online puppy training program.

    Did anyone do potty training with a doggie door? My older dog was trained using a doggie door so I am trying to train our new 12 week old puppy to use it.

    • @HowToTrainADreamDog
      @HowToTrainADreamDog  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doggie doors aren't always the most consistent way to potty train. For some dogs they work, others they don't! The downfall is that our dogs never learn how to communicate when they need to go, because they get to just go outside freely! This can work to your disadvantage if you ever visit someplace that doesn't have a doggie door.

      Dogs don't pee out of spite. It could be "excitement pee" which often happens when young puppies have extreme emotions. But dogs don't pee to get back at you. It's a natural bodily function and they don't care where they go. Its up to the human to teach it in a way that the dog understands.

      My wee pup does this too. My hands a chew toy unfortunately. We have only had her a week. So far we have found putting her chew toys in her month instead of my hands, saying no if she goes for my hands but saying good girl with the toy. We also realised she was getting hyper with the dog treats, so we switched to giving her her dried food and that's seemed to help keep her calm. I probably seem boring to her but if she gets too playful and starts nipping I stand away from her and keep myself calm so that would start to calm her down. I'm not a good puppy mum, but I'm enjoying it xx hope this helps and hope your all getting on okay ♡♡

      We keep our pup in a collar and leash with the loop cut off at all times outside the crate. That way she can’t escape. Then when it’s time to put the harness on, you can treat and reward while just showing the dog the harness, while touching the harness to the dog, while putting it over the head, etc. it’s important to practice in stages before you need to put the harness on!

      Our Mini- Schnauzer puppy does this, too. So, is it your t-shirt he's tugging, or you're putting one on him? When we got our boy it was bitterly cold, so I did put a jumper on him, but I don't really like clothes for dogs otherwise. Best thing for the collar is to be ready, collar should already be attached to the lead, move as swiftly and gently as you can, talk to him gently as you do it, use the clip kind of collar for speed, not the buckle kind, and don't remove it till the end of the day, that way you minimise the problem. Hope it's improving by now, anyway 🙂

    I got my very first puppy a few weeks ago. I'm just getting over a case of Puppy blues and my two main issues are that: 1) She wants to play with the cat, and the cat wants to play with her…but she quickly goes from play to chase…and 2) She doesn’t play well with any dogs other than her mom and my sister’s dog.
    She’s very vocal and enthusiastic during play. Her noises (snarls, her brother from a previous litter plays the same way) intimidate other dogs, including her own litter mates. I’ve been trying to use distraction with toys, baby gates to keep them separate, and the annoying “ah!” noise to get her to stop (I know it’s not the best method, but sometimes the toys aren’t enough to get her attention).
    The method that seems to be working best though seems to be where my sister and I hold onto both and try to let them interact with us not allowing any funny business. My sister’s dog was a much calmer puppy, she didn’t need any help with interacting with our cat. My Maize however, concerns me. I hope I can get her to play nicely with other dogs and at least ignore our cat. I feel discouraged most times, but I’m not giving up yet. She’s 10 weeks at the moment. She knows her name and usually comes when called. She knows ‘sit’ and ‘paw’. Now working on ‘down’. I’m hoping that training ‘down’, ‘relax’, and ‘wait’ will help with this issue.
