    This is a prototype for a rod building jig that I was designing. I have since updated the design and have the finalized version available for sale. It was a lengthy journey to design and speed up the production process, but it was really worth it...the rod wrappers work great! If you buy one, I'd love to share some of your completed wraps as examples of work that can be done on one of these jigs!

Truth is I’ve avoided getting into fishing too much until I get older and hopefully have more time. Thanks for your effort!

    Very cool idea mate. That makes it so easy to work with. Maybe if you had some sort of motorised wheel built into where the rod lies with a foot pedal that can spin the rod would make it go a little faster. Then you would have both hands free to guide the thread onto the rod.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are so many power wrappers available already I don't know that I could compete in that market. The cost of adding motors and rollers for the rod supports would be high for small scale production like I'm doing. There just aren't a lot of hand wrappers out there that are high quality for hobby rod builders. If you build a lot of large saltwater rods with long under wraps or you are building rods in a production/business venture, a power wrapper would be worth the investment. If you are doing an occasional rod build, intricate weave work or repair work a hand wrapper is the way to go for most people. I have thought about building a power wrapper for myself but I haven't done it because I don't really need one for what I do. I like the idea, but my cost would be pretty high plus there are safety and legal issues that could come up with motorized equipment.

      I've never built a rod, but I used your method to put a paracord handle on my Black Widow 10 foot pole. Now I'd like to wrap and epoxy the ends of the shrink tubing. I was thinking of looking up rigs to get, and look for more on how to do this. Looks nice!

    • @TheFishingHobby

      It is a fun hobby! If you do something like that you should upload a video! If you ever want to tint your epoxy, printer toner does a great job. It doesn't take much to tint a small batch.

    Sounds like you need to make a series of jigs to make the jig components

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes jigs were what I'm thinking too. A CNC router would be ideal for doing most of the cuts but I hate to invest that much until I know they will sell well.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do plan on using international shipping through eBay but eBay sets those rates so I don't know how much that will be.

    • @unrealshots
      @unrealshots 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Fishing Hobby CNC is a huge expense of you're not sure how it will sell unless you can use it for multiple purposes. Often local businesses are very cost effective for small batch cutting if you do the CAD work yourself

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may look into that at some point. Good idea!

    • @unrealshots
      @unrealshots 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      we outsource most of the CNC work we get done, as the machines are just so damn expensive ... not 100% sure how well HDPE cuts with CNC - you may get a fair bit of burring that needs cleaning up by hand...

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be cool but tough to do effectively. Even major rod manufacturer's don't use fully automated wrappers. I am working on a power wrapper that I will be selling. Should have a prototype ready in the next month or so.

      Will do! It is a really fun hobby and you can build the rods how you want them to be built too! Lots of blanks and guides available but not a lot of quality hand wrapping jigs out there. Power wrappers usually run hundreds of dollars and are overkill for most people who aren't building rods for a living.

  • @andrewfluharty5346
    @andrewfluharty5346 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very cool. Do the side supports slide as well, or are they fixed? That was one thing I really liked about your previous wrapper - having the supports able to slide makes wrapping near the tip or in between a split grip much more feasible. Looking forward to seeing this one for sale! I was about to build one for myself after being inspired by that last one, but I'm thinking this would be much simpler!

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Fluharty the supports do slide as well. Thanks so much for the positive comments. I have the redesign done and the first one built. I will be keeping that one and selling the next ones that I make. The crutches and cutting board one works well but this is a better overall design in my opinion. It is easier to store, more versatility in thread options and configuration of the size of the setup. I will get into some of that in the next video, more to come soon!

    Nice ! Springs under the wing nuts? ( had a phone call when you were talking about them).

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BluzGuitar Guy Fishing Antics well yes on the springs because it makes the tension more even/smooth but the wing nuts don't back off or tighten as the spools rotate because of the thin piece of HDPE plastic on the outside of the spools that connects the two separate threaded rods. The plastic can't rotate because it is attached to the other rod so the wing nuts can't tighten or loosen unless you do it by hand. I hope that makes sense.

    • @BluzGuitarGuyFishing
      @BluzGuitarGuyFishing 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course it makes sense. I was hoping that's what I saw in the vid. ~BGG~

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BluzGuitar Guy Fishing Antics that thin pice of HDPE that keeps the wingnuts from moving on their own also acts as the friction washer for that side of the spool.

  • @Trout2TrailOutdoors
    @Trout2TrailOutdoors 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome device you got there. I made a rod earlier this year without a jig and it was really tough. Just wondering how much you will probably end up selling these for and additionally where you get your rod blanks?

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They should work out to under $100 but I need to do some calculations on materials/time to come up with an exact amount. The amount of build time is where a lot of cost is going to be and that is one of the things I'm trying to improve on. It's tough to build a rod without a good jig. It can be done as you know but it certainly isn't ideal. I really like using the spring rod whenever possible because it allows you to back up several turns if you get off track on your wrap. Honestly I mostly rebuild older rods. Jan's Netcraft has a good selection of blanks and really there are a lot of nice ones on eBay too but you have to do some digging.

    These for sale anywhere???

      I made and sold the final version of these for a couple of years before the materials cost got totally out of hand. I designed and started 3d printing new ones a while back and people have been very happy with them. They are a better setup than this older design, although it was really good too. Here are the hand wrappers I am selling now: th-cam.com/video/pNWHK03lHrs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=AeDPGL0UWfPYbN12

      I thought about that but figured it would be hard to keep steady enough for recording something as detailed as this. I need a cam anyway at some point so I may try that if/when I get one. I have some video recording glasses. I may give that a try as a test run.

    Do you still sell these???

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not at this time. I lost my source for the HDPE I used to build them and they would be very expensive to build/sell. If I find a less expensive source I will start making them again.
