    ***Please note, I'm no longer making/selling these jigs. I lost my HDPE supplier and they were by far the cheapest option. I would have to increase the price too much in order to continue making them. I am leaving the video up so people wanting to build their own can borrow ideas from the video.
    The design works great and would be easy enough to duplicate if you are into woodworking or machining work as a hobby.***

    In spite of this being an 'older' video and knowing that the setup you have shown us is no longer available to purchase, it's been amazing. Watched loads of similar videos on all sorts of setups, but this is by far the simplest to follow and come up with a home-made version. Your reasoning behind so many of the smaller - but very important - design features has itself been sooo helpful. And your guide on starting even the simplest wrap has also been the best (for me) I've seen. Thanks so much for this.

    Well thanks for the very fast shipping. Very well packaged. Took two minutes to put it together.
    Like any new toy I could not wait to try it out. I grabbed one of my old sturgeon rods and proceeded to replace one of my broken guides. Actually harder to prep the rod than it was to wrap it. Turned out great for a first attempt, if I do say so myself.
    I love the tension system. The wire is great and allows several wraps in reverse if you get in trouble. Now I just need to get a better selection of thread and guides and I will be off to the races. I still have to flex coat my repaired guide but the wrap job looks good.
    You did a great job designing this and I am very happy with my purchase. For repairs and the amateur rod builder this should work great .

      Excellent! Thanks for the feedback. I really like it but I have been building/repairing rods for several years now and have actually built several different jigs as well. I'm really glad to hear you were able to use it effectively right out of the gate! My hopes were to make a jig a beginner could get really good results with.

      Shasta Steve thanks for the comment! I just shipped yours out a few minutes ago and look forward to hearing what you think about it. Yes sir, they aren't cheap to make and then there are fees and shipping costs that factor into the final price. I tried to price them fairly and there are less expensive options available, but I feel pretty strongly that people would find it difficult to buy another wrapper that is as versatile and solidly built for the price. As you mentioned, when you start pricing the materials to build just one the cost would probably come out to a similar amount plus the time, tools and effort involved. I purchased fairly large quantities of materials to bring the cost down and still allow me to make a profit. Looks like I need to start making more, only 1 left! I hope you enjoy it and I would love to hear any feedback you may have. I tried to cover all of my bases in the design of it but I'm always open to suggestions for improvements and would consider them in future builds. Thanks again, and I hope to hear back from you after you have had time to try it out.

      Thank you! I have heard nothing but positive feedback about the wrapper and I've sent them as far away as an island off the coast of Italy! I spent several months working on the design and it feels great to hear positive feedback from professional and hobby rod builders alike. It feels like all of the time I spent working on the design really was worth the extra effort.
      I'm currently developing a power wrapper for people who build bigger rods or people who would just prefer to have one over a hand wrapper. I personally enjoy using a hand wrapper, but I had enough people ask about the possibility of me making one that I felt like it would be a worthwhile project. I actually built a carriage for a power wrapper for someone who asked if I could make one based on the tensioner setup on the hand wrapper, so I did that for him and he said it was a great improvement over the one that came with his power wrapper. During that process I saw a lot of shortcomings in entry level power wrappers and that made my mind up for me. I have been working on the power wrapper ever since. I'm almost ready to build a prototype!
      I don't know if you use Facebook or not, but I have a page there where I post a few things that aren't on TH-cam you may find interesting. Here is a link if you want to have a look: facebook.com/The-Fishing-Hobby-622235554778488/
      I've been working on the power wrapper so much in my spare time that I haven't done a new video in a while, but I will be doing more TH-cam videos too.
      Sorry about the long reply 😁

      The Fishing Hobby yea started about six months ago got a lot to learn ..wasn’t happy with the tension system on my CRB wrapper so decided to try yours so glad I did ..keep up the videos learnt a lot of you ..stay safe 👍🏻

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The CRB setup could be decent if they redesigned the tensioner and made it so that it wouldn't change on you while using it. Probably wouldn't be too expensive to do. I guess they just don't want to bother with it, but they have to realize it is a problem. I've sold a few jigs to others that say the same thing. One person said he got so frustrated with it that he saved the stands and threw the rest of it away after he got mine. I would think they would look at reworking that part of it just to keep their customers happy with the products they sell. It is what it is I guess. Thanks and you stay safe as well!

    • @timclarke1791
      @timclarke1791 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Fishing Hobby I’ve kept the stands and my CRB drying motor there really good .. but I will never use the jig again now I’ve got yours .. I’ve sent your TH-cam link on some of the face book rod building pages Iam on ..and it’s getting good fead back already. So if you start getting lot more orders in UK 🇬🇧 don’t be surprised..

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've sold 4 to the UK so far. I've had a few people tell me the import duties are pretty high your way. I've sold 6 to people in Australia and that is the most to a country outside of the USA so far. I've also sold some to people in Malaysia, Spain and Italy. It is kind of fun to send them out to people in different areas of the world! It is a little hard to believe the jigs that were born in my shop have found their way to such far off places! I knew after I built the first couple of prototypes and used them that I was onto something that really worked well. I had already been building rods long enough that I was pretty good at it, and the prototype of this design made the whole process so much easier than what I was accustomed to that I thought they would be really handy for people just getting started. I also thought it would make the wrapping process more enjoyable for experienced rod builders too. I felt like I should start building them to sell, and that has been a rewarding learning experience in itself. Thank you for taking the time to reach out to me with your feedback on the jig!

    Very nice set up. Question for you . Could you not super glue a ceramic eye in the tension rod and it can then be used for metallic thread? just thinking.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You probably could get away with that or even just use the tension wire as is. It really just depends on the metallic thread you are using and how sensitive it is to deformation from pressure applied to it. Some metallic thread is pretty rugged and some is more fragile. You could always do a test wrap and see how it goes. If it doesn't work out, just wrap directly from the spool. Great question and hopefully this info will be useful to others as well. Thanks!

Pretty much drawn up my version of your design, but just wondering your view on using a pair of connecting tubes (mine will be steel rather than ali) v's a single one. My rod supports will not be in such an exotic material (just MDF), I wondered if having a pair of rods would increase the stability and reduce wear on the rod stands. Fingers crossed for a reply.

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MDF is actually a good choice of materials, just make sure to line your V cutouts with some felt (wood and MDF are abrasive). The metal rod is just there for alignment purposes really so single or double shouldn't make much difference.

    should have used drilled and taped holes and used machine screws not drywall screws the will strip out at some point just saying but all and all great design

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Drywall screws hold better in HDPE than machine screw fasteners. I actually tested that out myself before I started building these to sell. I think the reason is because of the shallow thread depth of the threads on machine screws. The differential between the major and minor screw diameters are larger with drywall screws if that makes sense. What I do here is drill my holes to the minor diameter of the drywall screws and then the screws cut their own threads as they are driven home. HDPE machines more like metal than wood does but the screws made for wood hold better in it. The thinner/shallower threads of machine screws strip easier in HDPE than the more coarse threads of screws made for wood. I hope all of that makes sense, but I thought the same thing until I actually tested some pieces in the shop.
      Thanks for the compliment too! Tight lines 👍

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      After this comment, I decided to check online for literature on the subject and it confirmed what I found in my own testing, use screws made for wood or threaded inserts if you want to use machine screws. Threaded inserts would be overkill in this application and would also require the use of smaller diameter screws due to the fact that the HDPE used in the jigs is only 12mm wide...that would have to be a very small diameter machine screw so that the insert itself would be small enough in diameter to fit the 12mm thick HDPE. Here is the article if anyone wants to read it (it has a lot of other good information in there): www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.emcoplastics.com/assets/pdf/HDPE/HDPE%2520Fabrication%2520Guide.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwi305GOlcvhAhVLM6wKHX2nCcYQFjAAegQIAxAB&usg=AOvVaw1qPj0o75fcyGK4F4Ig_kJ9
