Great video! And I feel like another great way to “socialize” a dog is to just let them exist around other people/dogs without having to approach them. Teaching a good place command and having them just observe and soak in the environment around them can be really beneficial in the early stages of their life!

    • @Missfoxtooyou

Exactly! Socialized dog does not need to engage, just be neutral around dogs and people.

It’s so cool to see how quickly the boxer adapted to the E collar and how the owner got her timing down. Its also amazing how quickly Tom reads and adapts the training technique to each individual dog. So inspiring to watch the owners gain confidence in their ability to handle their dog. Thank you Tom, for so much usable content! You are a God-send for so many of us!

I’m really loving your videos. I rescued/ found a stray dog. No collar no chip no one claimed him. He’s fearful of people and very reactive. He loves and adores me. He’s fairly obedient. I can’t get him to trust, not bark/ lunge at other people. He does not like my family.
No rescue replied to me when I asked for help. The vet told me he’s a liability and will never be adoptable.
I’ve had him in my home because I refuse to send him to the shelter and know they’d put him down.
    He’s about 8 months old.
He’s smart and affectionate. He loves other dogs. He loves me.
I tried adopting him out 3 times during the first two weeks but he wouldn’t let anyone near him.
He was/ is so good with me I never expected these reactions to others.
I’m slowly working with him and he’s doing better little by little. I’ve had dogs my whole life but never one like him, so I’m learning how to help him best I can.
I recently found your videos and they are great. You make so much sense to me. Thank You I’m learning a lot from you.

I like how Tom shows and explains why we need different tools and how all tools don't work for all dogs. This boxer did not respond to positive only, got frustrated with the prong and needed more pressure than the slip collar. The e-collar was the best choice in this case.

  • @Casselle

This owner has very similar feelings to how I did when I first considered using an ecollar. The negative propaganda out there regarding ecollars, even when you know you are going to use the tool safely and responsibly, can be really hard to deal with. It's so reassuring to see a properly applied tool help behaviour change so quickly.

    • @sugarnspice9000

As a dog trainer who doesn't personally use these tools for my clients, I'll also never tell a client it's wrong to use these tools because each dog is different in their needs and sometimes this is the best tool when you've exhausted all other options. I've trained dogs and clients who just didn't enjoy the long term effects of these training tools but I feel they can work when taught how to use them appropriately. I could see her mental struggle and I LOVE that she challenged him with those questions about what is the dog really associating this vibrate to and tom answered with ease and confidence. awesome trainer!

    • @colinjudge6996
      @colinjudge6996 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Sugarspice9000, what "long term effects" have you seen? I was ambivalent about ecollar initially but my dog has fantastic life now, long off lead walks and actually more positive reinforcement because his obedience is so good!

    • @sugarnspice9000
      @sugarnspice9000 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@colinjudge6996 they said they saw more aggression over time, dog became sensitive to the equipment and would go after her if she had it in her hands, so she couldn't use it anymore hence her switch to different equipment. Each dog is different in the way they handle/tolerate things tho 🤷‍♀️

    • @colinjudge6996
      @colinjudge6996 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@sugarnspice9000 Interesting. Perhaps she did not pair it with enough positive reinforcement and clearly somehow advertised the fact she was using equipment to her dog. A
preliminary period of collar on dog and control in her hand with no use might have avoided this.

@@colinjudge6996 yeah I'm not sure but she likely misunderstood her previous trainer or the previous trainer gave her incorrect directions. I do find that clients often mishear or misconstrue directions and when they come back they report it's "not working"

The dog training world is very damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't. No matter the method, someone will always have something nasty to say. Nova learned a ton of basic obedience and tricks very low force and high positive reinforcement. Now, she struggles with some reactivity and owner protection that we're working on with a more balanced method. I used a balanced method with Mochi from the start, and her dog aggression and reactivity are nearly non-existent. Thank you, Tom, for helping me change my mindset so I can do what's best by my girls

Having a strong leave it has been a task to work on since she was a pup . I have been wanting to train with an e collar for a better off leash experience, just haven’t officially invested in one yet. Thank you for your good and clear explanations, they’ve really helped!

Recently he has begun playing with dogs off leash and having a ball. Your videos are AMAZING!

Love it! I have a boxer who learned this behavior with prong collar and mini trainer. She responds to me telling her to sit and wait. If we continue to walk by another dog I tell her “with me” and we just move on by. Boxers are so sensitive to commands. I see this girl dropping her head when corrected. They are so smart.

  • @hippopotatomoose

My Hennessy was a genetic anomaly. She was a 90lbs boxer.
Fortunately, my trainer of 15 years was an expert with Boxers.
He told me positive training can only go so far. My problems required going back to the E collar. Hennessy was leash reactive and extremely protective.
Night and day in the results.
She was my saviour for 12 years. I miss her every day.
Another thing I learned as a boxer owner is bringing in another boxer. They will tire each other out and greatly help with separation anxiety.
It sounds like having two boxers will be double the work, but it actually reduced my work substantially.

After a local trainer had introduced us to the idea of potentially needing to invest in an ecollar for our training with our 6 yr old ACD and his leash reactivity I binged watched all of Tom’s videos to learn more about them. Then when our now 1 yr ACD arrived and we struggled again with leash reactivity, tried use a slip (prong collars are very hard to come by here in aus) he redirected onto me on a walk one morning I thought why not give it a shot, because we couldn’t keep doing what we were doing. What was him flying at the end of the leash to get to car, dogs, people etc we are now able to communicate so effectively and enjoy our walks, loose leash with no issues at all. He is a much happier boy. It has even given me the confidence and ability to walk him and his older brother together alone.

This is spot on on my story as a dog owner! We took our 14 weeks old Malinois to puppyclass wearing a regular collar and got practically yelled at for wearing a collar (???) and we bought a frontclip harness at the facility. From age 14 weeks to 9 months he had the harness and he was pulling us everywhere and we fed him treats all the time (because positive only) so now we have a reactive dog who expects treats after a major barking-at-strangers-moment.Yay :')

Tom, you are our saviour 🥰
Love your videos, I watch several a day and sometimes I repeat watch the ones that would help us. You just seem to have the knack. I will never understand how the remote collar haters cannot comprehend the benefits of an electronic tap tap tap if it helps the owner and the dog. A few seconds discomfort has to be worth it, right?
I have an extremely reactive 14 month German Shepherd girl. I adore her but man alive, she is a handful. I've been following your methods as much as I'm able but I'm pretty sure we would all benefit from a remote collar 🙏
She can be a lunger at cars, motorbikes, people, even children. I got her a halti when I went home to UK last month and she's already bust out of it, I've had to sew it back together! I have no support, everyone thinks I should beat the dog, that is the way they train in this country. Its barbaric and it breaks my heart. I'm persevering and working her throughout the day but she has her own mind, genetics maybe? I dunno....its bloody tough.
I have two other small dogs that barely tolerate her and my poor baby doesn't seem to get it that she's just too big for them and has no manners or spatial awareness 🤣

A lot of people wrongly think the boxer was named because it 'boxes'. It doesn't 'box' anymore than any other dog actually.
The name comes from an old German word for pants or trousers, but I can't remember the word but it was an old word that's no longer used, and it was modified and created the dogs name.

I think the difference in frustration/redirection with a leash correction compared to the pager is the element of conflict. Even if the dog knows the handler is controlling the pager, it's not a correction involving direct and physical conflict between the handler and the dog.

The way you teach dog owners on your video is so much easier to understand than other dog training videos because I feel like you show it more from the dog's perspective than being more Demint, yelling, being very fiscal to the dog is not right. I really loved this owner, I feel her concerns and she had great questions as well! This was so helpful for a few different reasons and both beautiful pups! Love me a boxer! Once again knocked it out of the park!

We have a one year old boxer with this same exact issue. I have the same concerns as the young lady addressed in this video. This video was extremely helpful. Thank you so much!

One size doesn't fit all.great to see a few other tactics used to help this dog make better choices. my 1st dog was a boxer they are awesome and nutty as a box of frogs. Love the questions this girl asks. She's powered herself for the instagram idiots. Knowledge is power and she did the right thing. A calmer happier handler and dog. Perfect partnership.

I Love watching your videos because it gives me hope that I'll 1 day be able to communicate with my dog and he will no longer think he has to be leash reactive.
You see I rescued him 4 years ago. He is a PBT(80%) & Am Staff (20%%) and he used to be so reactive that if a bicycle rolled by he would start screeching like a bird and lunging/jumping. Now with consistent training he either leaves it alone ("leave it") and keeps walking or sits quietly or he'll lunge catching me off guard. I use a gentle leader combined with a "Walk Your Dog With Love" Harness (Front Rudder) with a climbing rope leash and a Bull Clip clasp.
He has come a long way but he still is unable to be near or play with other dogs with his past abuse. But he does listen to me now.
My dogs biggest fear are the dogs in m apartment building and 1 of the dogs has attacked him 4 times leaving him traumatized setting him back each time and needing refresh training. That dog still lives in my building and yes management knows about it and that dog is now on a "cease and Desist" order but that does nothing for my dogs anxiety every time the elevator opens. All things to work on.
I have learned a lot from watching your videos on how to correct certain behaviors so "Thank You" for that!! I would love to be entered into the drawing. I Love your channel and content and I am Subscribed!! Thank You for your care and compassion towards all dogs and showing that there are NO BAD DOGS!!

Love this Channel. Not much logic in this world. This is a logical way to raise a dog to have the whole family live "Well"

After taking my GSD to a trainer for a 2weeks program my dog came back hating people and dogs when on leash. When she was fine before. I Worked on different methods myself and found the E-coller works for me. It can be frustrating to find the right timing for the correction. But at the end I was able to get it down.

THIS IS LITERALLY MY BOXER!!!! I’m actually extremely curious about her age and where she got her cause they could he littermates! (Mine is ~18month and I got her from VA) Same tendencies, stare downs, tension with new dogs etc. I will say I was on top of structuring with mine from day one so try reactive is ALOT less but it’s EXTREMELY similar to this girl’s. E collar work helped tremendously with mine but I use it slightly different from the video. I worked more on mine existing near dogs first then polished my heal and leave it then applied it to the walk(tone for the leave it not the vibrate). It’s those stare downs I had to watch the most cause although she will still heel nicely she will still cause the OTHER dog to explode from the eye contact so that is what I watch for the most. Great vid!!

This was a great example of being flexible with training methods. I've had instant success with a prong collar (after watching previous videos), but it's good to see a video where it didn't work...after which another method was chosen to help the dog understand what to do. Thanks! 🐾
