SLIP LEAD BASICS: introduction to leash pressure and utilising it on a walk

    The following video is a sneak preview of today's one on one session with an Italian street dog but also gives you a basic insight into Slip leads.
    As you know we use Slip leads with 9 out of 10 of the dogs we work with. They are a fantastic tool.
    Wether you have a hyper dog, a reactive dog or a nervous dog the slip lead is often our go to tool.
    A slip lead works by applying pressure and when the dog does what is asked of them (mainly pulling) the pressure is turned off. All dogs understand the concept of pressure. We teach the dog pressure and we teach the dog how to turn off the pressure. It's simple and straight forward and the dogs understand it.
    When we put a slip lead on, we position it as high up on the head as it goes, this gives you maximum control and also it does not sit on the sensitive part of the dogs throat.
    Dogs that wear flat buckle collars when they pull will often make choking sounds or sound like they are gasping for air, it's because of the way the normal collar sits and the fact that it does not distribute even pressure.
    We always slowly introduce the slip lead (just like any tool) and break it down in baby steps.
    Below is how we introduce the slip lead and how we use it to communicate to the dog to stop pulling.
    Stay tuned for the whole of this session including how the dog was before and how the dog does afterwards.

    Slip lead training is what I have just started. I'm proud of myself. Dumped halti and harness, purchased a slip lead time to go to work training.

    This video is very helpful! I bought one and tried to use it with my dog. But it kept on falling down to the middle or back of the neck, the stopper was useless. But now I realized that I actually shouldnt pull back when he pulls forward, that will cause the slip lead to fall back and choke him. I watched a few videos on using the slip lead this one is by far the best

      One thing he's not doing is reinforcing the positive behavior. Yeah, the release of pressure is a reward but praising her when she's doing the right thing, expedites the process.

    How do you pull the lead up if they are pulling in front, do you run to get in front and then pull up?

    My dog is small. Everytime I put it up behind the ears it slips down even though I tighten it up the most, and he keeps on choking.

    • @kathyp374
      @kathyp374 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tongo1x It’s meant to be loose,the only time it should tighten is when you’re giving a correction. once the correction is made it should lay loose again.

    • @tuckerm83
      @tuckerm83 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The "choking" is because the lead falls too far down on the neck, and the slipping happens if they aren't right beside you. This video is a good start regardless. When they pull, you stop. You have to be able to apply a little pressure from directly above, to "raise" the dog's head so to speak.

    • @shannondavidson1886
      @shannondavidson1886 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kathyp374 it is meant to be very snug up high behind the ears yet have room to tighten and relax. It should not be like a necklace that falls to the base of the neck where all the strength and drive is.

    I watch this video and he says if you pull back the dog will pull against so you pull up
    Watched a video directly before this one and they said you pull back and never up because pulling up encourages the dog to jump up😞

    • @katherinehansen950

      Not to further feed into the confusion 🤣 but I was told by my trainer to pull sideways because it puts pressure on the side of the neck where they wos get corrected by their mother.
      But I'm thinking maybe pulling up draws their attention to the one holding the lease? Just a theory

    Treating your dog like kids and babying them doesn't work- They need guidance , consistency and training! If you don't have an obedient dog, then you're going to deal with unwanted issues.. which can be hard on you and your pet.

Personally I wrote list of or directions down in my phone note pad. Never ever known any so called dog trainer to have dog on right hand side, the dog kept getting up because you never give a command 'stay' also never used a release command

    • @Ayeeejayyy9
      @Ayeeejayyy9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Ryan unsworth Walking a dog on the left or right is preference. Most people are right hand dominant so walking a dog on the left frees there right hand. Also for the sit command, if I tell my dog to sit he should sit and stay in that sit until I release him especially when he is right beside. I shouldn't NEED to tell him to stay. Now off leash I tend to use the stay command a little more when we are playing games and he is super excited.

    • @TheCasetooClips07

      @@Ayeeejayyy9 some dogs needs to be trained to stay while sit, not all dogs like relaxing,

      Dog isn't learning commands, dog is learning the meaning of leash pressure. He is explaining how this lead works and what it does, and this is just the first introduction. And it doesn't matter if dog walk on right or left side.

      I asked for my dog to be on the right hand side when training because it’s more convenient having some sort of wall etc next to me and having my dominant hand doing the work etc
