    My favorite racer of all time. Used to play this online back in the day on the Dreamcast. I think you watched back a replay of another online player against your car,. Still fun back in the day, Its all about sliding and picking the right gear you need to play this with manual gearrs It has a viceral handling model.

    A fantastic racing game and a very underrated one, considering it predated the likes of RFactor and Assetto Corsa. One has to wonder what Yu Suzuki and his team could've achieved if they had been put in charge of creating a true Gran Turismo competitor. Also, those skyboxes still look gorgeous to this day.

    Yu Suzuki was going for realism on this one. Nothing over-the-top, as seen in most arcade games during the 90’s. I always thought of it as the Virtua Fighter of arcade racers. Deep game play that rewards you over time, after many hours of practice.

    Hard as nails, but adore the DC version with the Ferrari wheel/pedal set-up. Never got the chance to take the 3-screen coin-op out for a spin, sadly.

    They way you describe your frustration, and effort in trying to get accustomed to the controls is very relatable. For the longest time, I've tried to get into m+kb for shooters, and no matter how many settings I change I still find it very uncomfortable. I don't know how people are accustomed to that setup because lord knows I tried😂😂😂😂.

      That feels weird because using a mouse is by far the most natural way of aiming. I personally can't use a gamepad for FPS/TPS, and I don't want to, because like 80% of the fun of a racing game comes from the steering wheel for me, 80% of the fun of a FPS/TPS comes from the mouse.
      If it's the keyboard side you struggle with, I also felt unconfortable the first time (25 years ago) during a LAN party, and I tried the setting a friend used there, and it clicked, it felt way more natural: I use the right click to move forward, and 3 keys for the 3 other directions in that order: left, right, backward, with one finger on each.
      Having 3 fingers to handle 4 direction keys is unatural, having the finger handling backward and/or forward between the fingers handling left and right is unatural too. So having one finger for each direction, spread on both hands and with neighbourg fingers to handle left and right makes it so much more natural for me, and maybe it could be the same for you or anyone who stuggles to get used to the traditional way.

    I loved this game back in the day. My local arcade had the deluxe 3 screen version, I would always play with all assists off and use the full 6-speed manual gear box. For a long time I held the lap record on the Long Beach track at my local arcade. To master the game in the "full on sim mode" with no assists you needed to be smooth on the wheel, go down the gear box under braking for "engine braking", change gears quickly to minimise the speed drop, and master the understeer & oversteer.
    Playing the single screen standard arcade machine with the "flappy paddle" gears felt like a completely different game for me. While changing gears with the paddle the car loses too much speed during the gear shifts, and I always felt as if I never had as much control over the car as I did with the 3 screen deluxe version. I always had this issue with the console versions as well. The deluxe cab was the way to play this.

    I've encountered the arcade cab of this just once and yeah the game just really kicked my ass. It's a cool concept and pretty hardcore, but It's one of the two racing games that was crazy tough to play in the arcades (right up there with the Battle Gear 4 Tuned in full Manual Mode).

  • @TomVanDeusen
    @TomVanDeusen ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I never bothered with this one on Dreamcast, I didn't realize it was first party AM2 directed by the man himself Yu Suzuki! The deluxe cab apparently had three screens and ran off four Naomi boards, had a physical clutch as well as shifter paddles as an option. Watching your gameplay footage I recognize the courses from Assetto Corsa, F1 and Forza which is really cool. The Practice laps are also in Assetto, which is a hardcore sim racing game for console/PC and is really only playable with a wheel/pedals. I have this on my GDEMU now, gonna give it a spin tonight since I'm a sim fan :) My only tips for these types of games is feather the gas like you would a real car, and likewise for the brake.

    My main arcade had this game, but it was removed before my "proper" arcade obsession.
    Luckily an arcade I go to every summer break has it. This year I set records on almost every stage in time trial mode. I'll see if other people bother to play and my score will be beaten by the time I'm back next year or in winter break!

    As a gamer, I love racing games. So I've purchased a few PS2 racing games over the years. It's amazing how much I had forgotten how most PS2 racing games expect the cross button to be depressed to accelerate, instead of using the R2 trigger button - which is used in present day racers. I'm sure that playing with a wheel makes racing better for these types of games, but with the PS2 I just want to use my controller and GO! Even games like Enthusia and Auto Modellista can feel unforgiving to me, but I guess that's the gist for playing a real life simulator (of sorts).

  • @slatanek

    My love for realistic sims started with this one. This game was pure magic back in the dat. Super smooth 60fps, beautiful lighting, great audio and ost, challanging. It was the game I moded my dreamcast gamepad for. I was pretty good at it too - was topping laptime charts in a Polish gaming magazine for a while (fun fact, to prove your laptime you had to record it on a vhs and send in the tape).
    I love this game to bits.
    Thing is with this game to be decent you actually have to drive proper racing lines and be smooth with your inputs. Sawing at the wheel like the reviewer does is a way to loose.

If you're doing network play (which this game has) with 3 other drivers, in a time and location (JP specifically) where there was most likely a scene of players who would have been really interested, that's the best way to get yourself better then most. The fundamental problem with the game is that it is very punishing with its physics, but at the same time the game does a poor job at communicating to you the inertia of the car's body, like body roll and grip limit. So I don't blame you for being confused, this is why I advise you to try your hand at a modern sim like GT7, learn about the dynamics of a real car like the way weight transfer relates to oversteer and understeer, and then come back to this one, and you will have an easier time anticipating how the car is going to react. Also this is a game that was meant to be experienced with a wheel and pedals, because gradual and smooth input are fundamental. In this sense, this game is for the initiated only.

    I have not actually played this, but I'm into racing sims. I will say, from your footage, you should at least turn the far-right setting, IBS, off. That is automatically braking for you. Your arcade racing instincts are kicking in at times (trying to get through a gap between a car and the wall, or coming up fast on a car directly in front of you), and the game is braking, not allowing you to properly do the sorts of maneuvers you're attempting. I know it's probably helpful on tracks you're unfamiliar with, because it slows you down for a turn you don't know is coming, but I think this one setting is probably the biggest issue at the moment. I'd suggest turning off IBS, then just drive one track until you've memorized its layout, and see how you do then. The other assists could be hindering you as well, it's hard to say. There are definitely games with sim elements where I've found the driving aids actually make the game waaaay harder for me. But every game is different.

    • @louspussy
      @louspussy ปีที่แล้ว

      I think F355 forces you to deal with weight transfer in a more realistic way than the GT games do, at least definitely the games in the series up until GT Sport. For example you can notice how heavy or light the load is on the front and the back depending on the g-forces you put on the car when you push it hard. In the GT games weight transfer barely has any effect on the cars, and the way they deal with traction is a lot simpler too. That means managing the dynamics of the car takes a lot less attention. Another thing that I think makes the gap in difficulty wider is that F355 forces you to drive a car without that much aero that also has its engine (so most of its weight) in the back. Not a thing that would be easy to drive at track speeds around corners IRL. Assists can only help you so much in that situation.
