I love the sheer absurdity of redoing Showgirls as a racing melodrama, right down to having a rival whose looks and first name homage Gina Gershon. As for the gameplay, I came at it thinking "Gran Turismo diluted with RR elements" rather than vice versa, which helped a lot.
This game plays much better without the assists, traction control, and ABS. Also, turn up the difficulty to Hard. It's still not perfect as the handling is touchy for a simcade, but it's certainly much better playing it this way.
I might be in the minority here, but I absolutely loved this game. There are a ton of great ideas here, the graphics were excellent for the time as well. I had this on GameCube, the analog triggers on the controller worked great for this game.
This is one of the only games in the series that I've never played. It feels like Ridge Racer 6 took the color palette of this game, and restored the arcade racing the series was known for. And then Ridge Racer 7 restored the bright colors along with the arcade racing.

How much rubber-banding is there? That's a mechanic that can sometimes be a dealbreaker in simcades. In a pure sim things are ironically more simple, since the CPU opponents cannot really cheat in any meaningful way, and then winning and losing all comes down to skill. Meanwhile if you play a game like the original Gran Turismo, the better your car becomes, the more the game will ramp up the effect and it'll suddenly feel like you're playing by a completely different set of rules than your opponents are. In a Mario Kart the effect isn't a problem, but in something like this it easily can be.
Wonder why i skipped this back in the day, and you answered it. Simcade! Def not my preferred genre! Also my have gotten the ps2 when this came out (if it even came out in europe...). So plenty of good games to choose from between ps2, cube, pc and already a few retro systems :D
I'm aware of mixed reviews that were average around 6/10. At the time it actually seemed that those reviewers were somewhat embarassed about female -theme on racing game, paticularly plot. Not even actually playing it, or too shamed admid liking the game. Besides, while Namco was not denying Ridge Racer -brand on this game, it is better not to think this as Ridge Racer -sequel, or game won't meet expectations. I remember reading on the interviews before release, that Namco's team was tired of entire Ridge Racer product line at the time and wanted take a break of the series. But to me, R: Racing Evolution is the only game with perfect balance between Arcade & Simulation. While playcontrol is nothing like Ridge Racer, it's still as good on its own, just different. "Pressure feature" is also nice touch. Music is the best i've ever heard on any racing game on any system. Only complain i have, is that Mip -Mapping nor Anti -Aliasing are not used even on NGC/XBOX -versions. Despite that, graphics are still amazing though. Even better looking tracks than those same real world tracks on Gran Turismo. I really think that this is best semi -realistic racer out there ever, when it comes to enjoyabilty & handling, music & content. Like mentioned, the Gamecube -version is slick & simply awesome. Highly recommended.
Could be something in YT’s re-encode. My master export doesn’t have it. Make sure you are on 60p too. Sometimes if drops to 30p and that does weird things. That’s the one factor I can’t control…YT encoding

Strange Ridge racer vibe but it is poorly designed. But it contains a little bit of fan service. XD

I had this on the Cube as well as Xbox i found the Xbox version better to control and overall graphics/gameplay. Especially if played on modded XB360.
