I will never forget getting Sega GT 2002 as one of my first Xbox games as a kid. It came as a combination disc with jet set radio future. Another amazing game in it's own right.
Best combo game pack Xbox ever graced us all with. If only those two games had backwards compatibility cause I'd love to play both Sega GT 2002 and JSRF again.
Man, Sega was cooking back in the early 2000s. The Carrozzeria, being able to buy used car parts and the parts themselves degrading as they get used and the ability to set the price of the car you want to sell ("no lowballers, I know what I have") are all interesting ideas. The fact that we didn't get another game with a car builder like Sega GT until this year with the recent WRC game by EA Sports shows how Sega GT was ahead of it's time (or devs just didn't think it was worth doing until this year). The parts degradation mechanic sounds cool but I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't like the idea of losing a race because a random part failed as it would feel like being cheated out of a win by RNG mechanics (in fact, unreliability as a game mechanic isn't used in racing games because of this, the only other game I can think of that had something like that was F1 97 for the PS1).
Carrozeria featured definitely the ace of this game with ability to create your own car with some nice development for performance and looks that looks neat back in millennium
Sega GT wasn't really a "Gran Turismo clone" it was actually just it's own thing that was trying compete with Gran Turismo 2. Like how Forza Motorsport is competing with Gran Turismo now.
my whole childhood all i remember was its music and the lighting at the dealership. Atleast Sega GT 2002 was for sure more or so a GT3 clone. I was barely able to tell which was which when swapping consoles when I was like 6 years old. Sweet as hell times. I can't thank both of those games enough for getting me into jazz and 80s/90s cars
Sega actually had to make rivals to popular franchises because they couldn't convince publishers to make games for them. Like sports games and fighting games.
No it wasn't good. Too limited, controls wasn't great, AI was shit and compared to GT2 it felt like a alpha version of a game. Just because it's old and people are blinded by idiotic nostalgia, doesn't turn a turd into a diamond.
Sega GT on the OG Xbox was so great. The night driving was excellent for the time, and the selection of cars was fun. Selling your car was fun and decorating your garage was basic but interesting.
Was so excited when I found Sega GT, Test Drive: LeMans, and F355 Challenge for dirt cheap at a pawn shop years ago. Everything about the packaging and menus made it look like it was right up my alley. But oh man...that handling. Boat handling is a pretty accurate description of the physics. I've also heard someone say it was like driving a skateboard on a pogo stick. Didn't matter what kind of car I chose or what kind of tuning I did, everything handled like absolute trash. Got frustrated and gave up after about 10 hours. Test Drive: Le Mans on the other hand, was a game I knew nothing about, and absolutely blew me away. The day to night transitions and weather changes were awesome, and I wish I could have experienced it when it originally came out.
Aside from knowing Daytona, Outrun and Scud Racer I never knew that Sega went ahead with a game like this. It's quite interesting to see that even they tried to dip into the GT craze at the time, I'm always learning more about old games here lol. Great video as always Dove, props to you and Shari for putting out another well made documentary.
As an og Xbox kid, Sega GT Online was my Gran Turismo... and my Forza as well for the year or so before that came out. It had a great carlist, interesting game modes and gave you a feeling of ownership maybe only TDU matched since then. Though I don't think I ever completed the chronicle mode, perhaps I should fire it up this weekend.
Heck yes, using the jet set radio Future music during Sega GT 2002. I had the original Xbox demo disc of the two of them. It had a few game trailers I believe Buffy the vampire Slayer and stuff like that
I'm so happy you took the time to talk about 2002, a lot of people skip it since you can't emulate it, but it really is a complete overhaul of the game that makes it a far more viable competitor to GT. Truly a unique experience with a lot of depth to be had, especially with wear and tear.
@@fordmanx3 not exactly can't be emulated but more so OG Xbox emulation is not in a really good spot, the footage I got of 2002 for editing had a lot of problems with shadows and reflections (you can still spot them in this vid). even the Forza Motorsport 1 vid also had a lot of issues with textures and tanking frames on Dove's high-ish rig.
@@fordmanx3 I'm late, but this is very much not the case. Xemu is actually getting really really good, especially recently; though Sega GT 2002 isn't playable without slowdowns currently. It runs at about half speed or less regardless of hardware.
When you get better driving skills and learn suspension tuning this game is a real joy to play. I loved playing this game so much. Oh and when you build your own cars you can be unstoppable!
dayum, I used to play Sega GT as a kid. Completely forgot about it over time, But seeing it again sparked those memories instantly. I remember thinking this game looks pretty good, but it looks better than i remember it does.
I used to play the mess out of Sega GT 2002 as a kid on the Xbox. It came bundled with Jet Set Radio Future and man I enjoyed the time I spent with it from the cars to the banger menu soundtrack as well.
In Europe Sega GT for Dreamcast was over shadowed by MSR. Sega Europe held Sega GT back and kept it hidden in favour of promoting MSR. Sega GT released with no fanfare on the same day as MSR, months later the Dreamcast was disconnected.
Tbf they made the right call there - MSR absolutely mops the floor with driving that actually feels good, instead of whatever physics they're going for with Sega GT
We need more of creative opportunities like the car factory of this game, not just in racing, generally speaking, each year games come with less support for player content, and I'm not talking about mods, I mean content generated in game for the game. The track editor from Gran Turismo was good, but bland and they let the idea die too easily
Sega GT was an amazing game. But something about Sega GT 2002, It just wasn't hitting like how the first Sega GT was hitting. The Original Sega GT has a gem. But since Sega did a "Sega's Power Surge" Reveal Trailer during The Game Awards. Is a good chance that they might bring back the Sega GT Series to compete with Forza Motorsport & Gran Turismo.
I liked the sega gt2002 thing were you could add things to your garage, and used performance parts. It was just a little detail but it made the game a little more fun.
Sega gt 2002 is my all time favorite racing game. It had a vibe, an atmosphere unmatched, and it takes me back to a really special time in my life. It truly sucks ass that you can't play it on Xbox One 😢
I purchased the Japanese version when it was first released, going as far as buying a modded Japanese Dreamcast so I could also play American games, the game packaging was a duel case like GT2, it came with a very detailed booklet. The challenge I initially had was everything was in Japanese, overtime got used to it.

Sega GT on the Dreamcast was and still is my favorite racing game ever created. I can't tell you how many hours I put into Sega GT! Oh and the VMU games I made millions in the VMU games lol. All of 9th grade was spent playing Sega GT lol. Sega GT 2002 I had really high hopes for, but it definitely didn't hold a candle to the original.
I wasn't aware that Sega GT was a Gran Turismo clone and not another arcade racer. Would be cool to see a coverage of Metropolis Street Racing, leading up to the Project Gotham Racing series. Unless something similar in the likes already exists...
If you want the original to handle better, go for drift handling. I find the standard controls are like trying to steer a speeding tank on ice, but in drift handling mode, with a well timed break at the corners if plays like a dream. Of course I am biased toward arcade racers with their drift mechanics over any simulation type racer.
What happened to good racing arcades? There are no more good titles like PGR4, Toca Race Driver 3, R: Racing Evolution, Forza 4 itself and even some with different mechanics like Beetle Adventure Racing and Cruis’n. All have lost their essence.
WOW, that's a throwback trick 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 the discontinued clone of Gran Turismo 2-5, and especially Juiced era, R-Tuned era, Ridge Racer Portable, Colin McRae Rally era and so on.
