    Thank you for all of it including the lantern hanger! I have had success with several Coleman 200A lanterns with the original Coleman Fuel generators. I just remove the top nut, ventilator, and globe and preheat the generator with a little BBQ starter by holding the lantern almost horizontal for about two minutes. I can then turn the fuel valve and they light up and run just fine on Kerosene. So I call mine "Tr-Fuel" lanterns as they run on unlead gasoline, Coleman fuel, and Kerosene.
    Always snug the top nut for transportation and storage, but prior to lighting, loosen 1/2 to 3/4 turn to avoid it getting too tight due to thermal expansion that leads to porcelain cracking and difficult nut removal once cooled.

    The best part of this, IMO, is that kerosene stores far better than gasoline. For those looking for sources for pre-heat cups other than buying them as such, your local auto parts store sells brass (or steel if you like) freeze plugs in assorted sizes for engine blocks

    I originally bought the generator from OCP Old Coleman Parts. They do not list the generator any more for the 201 kerosene lantern. I saw this on Ebay www.ebay.com/itm/124206048327
    Prices have doubled since I made this video.

    It using jet fuel, you should get the Jet-A version that does not have Prist (de-icing agent) in it. Prist can create harmful fumes, as well as some of the additives in military grade jet fuel (JP-8). If using a version with these additives, do so at your own risk and do so for outdoor use only.

    With the various skill level of people seeking the knowledge from this video I highly recommend that be considered first.
    Safety is no accident. Keep the pocket knife pocketed. Get a rat tail file and or a flat double cut bastard file. I'm a state licensed plumber. oxy/acetylene and silver solder brazing rod would be refrigeration or HVAC related. How many one handed people stood confused in the plumbing isle agitated already from pocket knife puncture wounds under dress🤔😆
    They'd stay there longer than they should've wondering why that sandpaper is called Emory cloth not knowing that's the only actual plumbing item used in the video and keep looking thinking they gotta be close. Lol
    I appreciate your intent and don't mean to be too harsh.
    Safety and clarity of skill set level needed can't be over stated. In today's information age people think a 10 minute TH-cam video and they're ready to hang a state certification on their wall. Lol
    I've been called all hours of the day and handed handfuls of pieces parts assuring there's no missing parts here. No way.🙄 Hahaha

      There is no need to change the tip out on a 220 double mantle lantern or make gigantic oversized preheat cups that bust your mantles. Buy a Coleman 201 preheat cup for your 200 or 220 lantern. Buy a 201 gen for your 200 single mantle lantern and you're done.

    Question: The purpose of the alcohol pre-heater is to preheat the generator + air intake prior to opening the the kerosene valve and bringing the kerosene up to vapor temperature. You demonstrated you still get flame at the mantle head if you direct light with kerosene only. It is not pretty: Lots of smoke an all --- Will not the generator come up to kerosene vapor temperature eventually, smoke and all, even without the pre-heat cup? It might be brutal, and smokey, but most lanterns should work regardless of fuel: Once up to temp. Yes?

    I went to Ace hardware today and the young lady said it was right over there. I looked and she pointed again. She was pointing at a huge gas generator. I only needed a Coleman 220E generator for a lantern. She did not know what a lantern was. Clinton, SC.

  • @explorermike19
    @explorermike19 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    There is an easier way: Just mix some coleman fuel with the kerosene. About 15% to 25% Coleman fuel is enough. That is enough to get the fuel to ignite. It will start to burn brighter after the generator heats up from simply burning the fuel mix. I takes about one or two minutes. No changes to the lantern. You can do the same with a Coleman stove, but will work better if you put fuel right onto the burner plate and light it so that it can heat up the generator tube that passes over the burner plate.

    • @believeit3203
      @believeit3203 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What you say is true, however, it will eventually plug up the filter that is in the generators of many of these stoves and lamps that are made to burn "white gas"

    • @explorermike19
      @explorermike19 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      believe it maybe kerosene will clog up the lanern generator, but I heard that high grade kerosene is cleaner than gasoline. PLUS, you can get old Coleman lanterns for $15.00 = less than a gallon of Coleman fuel. I used the Kerosene/Coleman mix almost every day for a year and a half and it us still running smooth.

    • @explorermike19
      @explorermike19 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 50-50 mix of Coleman fuel to kerosene works well and you don't need a heating cup. I think you can use less Coleman fuel because you just need the Coleman fuel in the mix to get the lantern started. One the lantern is lighted, it heats the generator and the kerosene runs nice = burns brighter than Coleman fuel.

  • @trevorsteele9728
    @trevorsteele9728 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ah...showing my age here but when I was a young'un the gas at the stations were essentially regular and ethyl. Which was lead containing just octane was higher for ethyl. The regular was reddish in color and smelled horrible. I suppose at some point the danger of lead was becoming an issue (ate my share of paint chips I'm sure). So, they came out with unleaded gas aka white gas. Talking the lead out made it clear. Coleman was quick to adopt that as a safer fuel, especially inside. After a few years I think they must have realized the lost revenue and came out with Coleman fuel and tried everything since then, to instill the idea that you should only use their Coleman fuel. I believe the Coleman fuel is some kind of naphtha based solution. Essentially I think the real conversions are dependent on 1) Where you can safely use it and 2) The orifice nozzle at the end of the generator as well as the vapor producing parts of the generator itself. It seems to me that it could be made to use most any combustible liquids if nothing gets clogged and it can be made to vaporize when starting up and running.

      Typically you use denatured alcohol, but if the SHTF and you don’t have any isopropyl alcohol then you probably don’t have any medical supplies so you’re likely not going to survive anyway.
      My suggestion is to buy alcohol BEFORE the crisis so you have some when the crisis hits. That’s what preparedness is all about.

      I think the idea is that kerosene is much safer to burn indoors. In the event of a leak it is extremely less volatile. I would use one of these inside a tent or indoors burning kerosene, but wouldn't be comfortable with white gas. Also this is by no means permanent. Keep the old generator tube or tip, and leave it in the lantern box. With a few simple tools you could run either fuel by simply swapping parts.

      It depends on where you get it. I saw it for 80 cents more per gallon than gasoline at the pump in Burnsville, NC back in October, 2016.
      Jet A which is kerosene is selling for $3 per gallon at an airport near me, gasoline as of 2/1/2017 is $2.15 per gallon.
      Hardly 2x as expensive in my area.
      I also picked up 15 gallons of good quality kero of of craigslist a while back fior FREE!
      A family member wants me to take @ 35 gallons for free from their old tank and get rid of it as well.

    • @Subgunman
      @Subgunman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jet A, if you can get it is a lot cheaper than K1 Kerosene. Also no road tax on jet fuel. Bigger problem with using regular gasoline in the gas lanterns are all of the darn additives as well as the ethanol they add to the mix. Colman fuel is pure gasoline and in Europe I use what they commonly call white benzine that is available as a cleaning fluid in home goods stores, a bit more expensive at around €1.50 for a 450ml (16oz) bottle. I've been running my Coleman's on it for about ten years now, no problem.

    People have "reasons" to do this. IMO there is no legitimate reason to do it and if/when I find one of these at a flea market or garage sale, my #1 priority will be to FIX it by converting it back to the way it is supposed to be. And btw, any normal Coleman lantern can run on pump gas if that's all that can be had at the moment. In fact, you can use that exclusively IF that's what you want. th-cam.com/video/Qgd78quIrBw/w-d-xo.html

      228 is the same as a 220, just a wider vent to shine the light down more than out.

      That is a very generous offer but, if you go to www.oldcolemanparts.com/ they have the real deal for the brass burner cups. If memory serves, I think they were @ $ 8 bucks or so last time I checked.
      Those 228 and 220 lanterns are going for some big bucks on ebay and craigslist right now. The market is hot.

      I both many parts and cups from Mike. Great place. I just will order more from him. I font sell lanterns often but rather trade them. I have converted several 242, 200a, 228 & 220's. For me kerosene is my fuel of choice for safety reasons. Anyway great video and thanks.

      You need a 200a #6 tip and cleaning needle. Wire wrap or bronze wool instead of the white tube inside the generator and a preheat cup. I pull the needle out the pickup tube. Some start to pulse if its left in. Some people have no issues with it. I solder a strait larger diameter pickup tube to the valve.

    • @homesteadprepper
      @homesteadprepper  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No such thing as a silly question, only silly answers.
      You could experiment with changing from a two mantle to a one mantle but, I would not recommend it.
      My recommendation is to find the one you want "used" or buy new and go from their.
      These lanterns are still wildly available at garage sales and flea markets for $10 and less. This will change in the future and the price will go up as they become "collectable".
      Get 'em while they are cheap!

      No. It’s actually gasoline. It’s unleaded gasoline that is more pure because it lacks and all detergents and other additives in automotive fuel.

  • @donkibbler7812

    That’s Bs because you can use regular gas in Coleman Lanterns and it will not hurt it

    • @totallyfrozen

      Gas station gasoline has a lot of additives that will gum up the generator. You’re better off burning coleman fuel (white gas) unless you have the dual fuel generator in your lantern.

      You could go old school, solder the tip you have and drill it out to the right diameter.
      That's what we use to do back in the day to re-jet a carburetor.

    • @mikeciappetta300
      @mikeciappetta300 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My recollection is that on one of the 200s the flame just got bigger and threw out a lot of black smoke.
      To be fair, there was no pre heater cup installed at that time. I know that on a newer duel fuel, kero will work without modifications if you pre heat the generator enough before lighting.
      If you get to try yours, let us know, thanks.

    BTW White Gas simply means "unleaded." There was a time tetra ethyl lead was added to gasoline to leave a lead deposit
    on the valve seats to keep them from wearing down. Today valve seats are made of tungsten carbide or similar material.
    All gasoline today is unleaded "white" gas.
