Earliest camping memories are of dad lighting the coleman lantern and it lighting up the whole area. It always made me feel better. That signature smell and hiss of the lamp working too.
I just bought one in an antique store in Ireland. It’s dated 1----73. Made in Canada. By the condition of the lamp I think it was only lit once before. It’s perfect. In the box with spares & instructions. It even has a warranty slip stamped with a number of the person who did the final inspection before shipping. I collect lanterns and have a lot of other makes but if I were going camping then it would be the Coleman. I just know it’s going to work. Thank you Coleman.
I have 5 of the newer Northstar Propane models that I used when I was an Asst. Scoutmaster and 4 of the old white gas models from 70's to the late 80's. I prefer the white gas models. Probably just nostalgia but I love the smell and the hiss of the old lanterns. My 1972 lantern reminds of camping as a kid with my family and catfishing at night with my grand parents. I'm so glad that Coleman keeps making replacement parts.
Wow, I worked in a metal stamping plant that had been there since 1902. Lots in common with manufacturing these lanterns. Real men and women made these products. What a wonderful company
I've got the one my parents used when we would camp from around '79 or '80. Still works well and holds pressure. I even have the box it came in. I also have the Coleman stove we used for camping. Both excellent products
I have a lot of them and they all work. Can't pass one up at a yard sale. My favorite is the 228 big hats! The oldest one I have is a 54. I took a couple of them to boyscout camp and the other parents wonder if they would even work. When I fired them up and lit the whole camp up they loved it. Now when we need light at outdoor facilities they look at me for lanterns and a stove for coffee.
Made in Wichita Kansas USA, They can be found pretty cheap used, but often need cleaning and minor repairs. Propane and now LED had taken over the game. Coleman white gas /camp gas is hard to beat .

I saw a useful tip online the other day. It was suggested to put a few turns of electrical tape on the bail where it hits the fount. That will stop the bail from dinging the piant every time you set the lantern down and the bail falls over.
I just got my 220 F Use Generator lantern at an auction for $15.00 on October 21, 2021! Hardly used, 6 220F 67 on bottom & I'm in love, named it Howie! Needs to be cleaned internally. Has the Pyrex globe too! I also have 2 propane Coleman lanterns! Love that green!
I have 5 Coleman lanterns & 1 Coleman stove, all purchased from 1980 to 1991. They all still work. I had to send my model 275 (purchased in 1983) back in 1994 due to it flooding when I went to light it. Coleman fixed it for a dirt cheap price & sent it back in record time. Needless to say, I’m very happy with my Coleman lanterns & stove.
I have a red 200A that I bought (I'm guessing) in the early 80's. Used it a few times then put it away in the red plastic Coleman case I had bought especially for this lantern. It's been stored for about 33 years but I got her out, added some fuel and she started right up with the original 33+ year old mantle. Looks and works like new. Thank you for preserving knowledge.
It's a wonderful feeling when you get one you feel like you want to go camping of go outside to turn it on ,I have 5 when the power went out my neighbors were using flashlights and I was using my Coleman lantern and they were wondering why I had do much light.
I've got a 50's stove and lantern and a newer multi-fuel stove and a kerosene lantern and the work as good as when they were made. Will always remember the hiss the lanterns make. Thanks, Coleman for FINE products! And Brandmade for showing!
1 bought a lantern when i was 18, im 46 and still use it regularly. Now i have 3 lamps.2 vintage, the one i bought and a 3 burner and 2 burner stoves and today i just got a catalytic heater off e bay. They all reside in my homade camper now and get used all the time. Still american made and still the best camping option out there.
My best memories were those of the late 50s and 60s growing up and going camping during the summer and Dad pumping up and starting the Coleman lanterns and stove! I wouldn’ trade those memories for anything! Coleman made in America and making memories world wide!
I think everyone should have at least one of these and a good supply of fuel and mantles, and be familiar with how to use it. A stove that runs on the same fuel as your lamp is a good thing to have on hand as well. A very simple step every household can take for disaster preparedness as well as recreation. I think after the recent situation in Texas we can see the utility of a non-electric light that can run on a variety of fuels (gasoline, white gas, and even clear kerosene) that puts out a large amount of light as well as quite a bit of heat. I've rarely had to use these indoors in emergencies so always be mindful of ventilation and have a working battery powered CO detector. I've never had a coleman lamp set one off although you can smell it running a little.
I love these i was in mexicali when the 7.2 earthquake hit the city turned the power to check lines for 2 or 3 days it was really dark at night one neighbor had one and it lid his whole house after that i started buying them cant pass them at garage sales
I have a 3 burner 426 I got for $20 years ago. We have big off grid RV trips with family and friends and that stove always comes through to tackle the big meals!
I rescued a broken 288 from a street market in TJ 10 years ago, and just bought a 'Deluxe' propane lantern too. The new one is made in Taiwan, but still appears to be a quality build. Fired up effortlessly! Looking forward to many years with both! I'll give my money to any company that still provides parts and stands behind their craftsmanship!
coleman lanterns are just the best.. I've had a few over the years and never let me down.. so reliable.. you can stick yer new fangled lanterns that take batteries . old stuff are the best.. better built and reliable..
I've used Coleman products for work and play for over fourty years, I have 15 lanterns, oldest is a 1949 228d... Works still. Found it in the dump with a near mint 1959 200a, that works too, they all work! My wife just bought me a new 639 c. Never had a brand new one before.
I cant believe why anybody would throw one of these old lanterns away, I'd love to have another 200a while there are people throwing them away like do they even wonder if it has any value
I’ve got a couple dozen. You can pick them up cheap if the paint is rough and clean them up and repaint. The thing to watch for is the top vent for damage, they are porcelain coated and can’t be easily refinished.
I've got half-a--dozen of them in the garage...only one right now without a broken globe...but not counting the glass and the mantles (they become ash, after all) I don't think I've ever broken one, and they always have worked for me...just clean fuel, and a few pumps...great tools that are dependable! Now, if metal things would quit hitting them in the truck bed, and breaking the globes! ;-)
i have a few old lanterns and stoves and love them all but the only 2 complaints i have are these. 1 the new mantles dont burn as bright and 2 the fuel price but other than that they still work great!
@@mainelyelectric i get the crown brand at walmart for about $8.00 a gallon can. the coleman brand is between $12.00 and $14.00 a gallon can. i still remember when it was $1.50 a gallon for coleman fuel back in the 90`s
You can get a mesh "globe". I have a couple. Good thing about them, they don't break with a little abuse. Bad thing, not as much light. But not enough difference to worry about.
1500 a day back then. This year we will only make 1500 or so. It's crazy to me that I'm the one to make everything that goes into the Wichita made lantern and stoves except the fuel subassemblies or plastic parts. I even paint everything too now that our painter retired.
You can still buy these standard dual mantle lanterns (288s), but you’ll have to check with certain retailers, not sure if you can still get them on amazon. You can always check specialty stores like leacock coleman center or your local Coleman outlet store if you have one nearby.

Sadly, lanterns like this are just about a thing of the past. Even propane lanterns are rarely ever used anymore. Wasn't long ago that when you went to a sporting goods store like Academy, you saw a whole aisle of gas or propane lanterns. Not anymore. You might find a few lanterns sitting somewhere in the camping section. But battery and solar powered lights have taken the place of this piece of History. As an avid camper myself, it's been years since I've used any kind of Coleman lantern. I still have four of them sitting, being unused. I just can't bring myself to get rid of them.
Coleman has hit rock bottom!!! Closing the factory in Kansas with all the history and putting people out of a job. Coleman products have been declining in quality. I own many old Coleman products from the 1940s to current. Many top products like exponent have been discontinued. In a final blow all the factory stores have closed
Battery-operated lanterns take away from the fun of camping and also fluorescent or incandescent bulbs attract mosquitoes and other insects more than the gas Coleman lanterns. I use oil hurricane lanterns and Coleman gas lanterns when I go camping but I do have flashlights just in case and I do use a battery operated Lantern made by Coleman for inside the tent.
The liquid-fueled lanterns are USA made. Is your NorthStar liquid-fuel or propane? In the video you can see the liquid-fuel NorthStar founts with the other traditional-styled ones.

They used to use Thorium in the mantles years ago. They switched to Ytterium because it wasn`t radioactive.

I have to ask. Why are the globes not made by Pyrex anymore? These made in china ones crack when will sometimes crack while the lantern is on!

I have an old three burner stove. Someone stole the brass fuel tank. Now it just sets in my storage shed.

There are protective cases for most models. They protect the glass and they keep dirt daubers and spiders out of the lantern.

You know what'd be nice? A gas lamp that took normal lighter fluid, and didn't need mantles. Maybe switch to wiremesh over glass, too.

Loved my coleman lamp but those mantels were so delicate. Knock the lamp too hard and the mantel will be a puff of chalky dust.

its missing a 3 cent plastic tube from the handle so it not nick of the paint...brainers !
