The fact this was made on a low budget with almost all practical effects is crazy.
They showcased some of the best body horror I've seen without needing CGI to do it.

Hey , just wanted to add that ,yes the movie was amazing and what also is impressive is that the original THE EVIL DEAD 1981 was also an amazing low budget movie that had really well done practical effects.

THIS. It brilliantly illustrates how to properly craft a remake, and I still contend it’s the best horror film of that year. I can’t wait to see what Alvarez has done with the “Alien” franchise next weekend when “Alien: Romulus” hits theaters!
And I love that San Raimi and Bruce Campbell, re: this remake, had the very wise observation that “eventually someone would remake “Evil Dead”; it might as well be us (as producers).”

As someone who has gone through recovery for alcoholism, this horror movie really hit close to home in a really good way. It was the perfect setup for the interpersonal conflicts of the characters and served as an excellent reason for why a lot of the things that happened in the movie happened the way they did. Why were they out there in the middle of nowhere? To guarantee Mia wasn’t anywhere near any dealers she could run to if she relapsed during her cold turkey. Why didn’t they believe her at the start? Because she was going through SEVERE withdrawals and was likely drowning in paranoid delusions that only she was experiencing. This whole movie could be seen as a brutal but tragic allegory for how addiction doesn’t just bring out the worst in us, but does so in a way that destroys everyone close to us, either figuratively or literally. Excellent horror film, and a wonderful remake that stands tall with the original.

The usage of practical effects over digital is what really makes this movie so superb. The scene of Olivia pissing herself out of fear from being possessed instills so much fear into me, I get chills. Just the entirety of a character being so horrified at something uncontrollable happening to them they urinate themselves is insane. The bathroom scene of her slicing off her face was also the scariest scene for me.

I'm so happy you guys liked it. When I went to see it in the theaters, I honestly thought it was going to suck. No Ash, No Bruce, No Deal. But it is really good. And when Bruce or Ash makes his appearance at the end, everyone in the theater cheered so long. It was the first time Bruce played Ash since Army of Darkness at that point. No Ash Vs. Evil Dead yet so it was so damn cool. Jane Levy is incredible in this. Hopefully you guys also watch "Drag Me To Hell". It's directed by Sam Raimi. It's not an Evil Dead movie but it feels like it's in the same universe. Highly underrated movie. Groovy!

  • @jimmybonez7528

The plan with this film wasn't to remake the original, but to reboot it for new audiences. When they were making the film the original idea was that they would produce a sequel which would then be followed up by an Army of Darkness pt. II with Ash teaming up with Jane Levys character. I think this was all put on hold for the show, Bruce Campbell said he has retired as Ash, and then Jane Levy had a falling out with the director which seems to have put a hamper on the original plan.
But Bruce Campbell recently did an interview about the new film, and he spoke a little about this one too. He said the way they're rationalizing these films are that when Ash went back in time in Army of Darkness he was tasked with finding the book in the cemetery, when he went there he actually found three books waiting for him. Bruce said that they're kind of running with the idea that there are more books each with their own stories that all kind of tie back to the original without being "remakes". And it's kind of hinted at with Ashs book being called the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis while this book is called Naturom Demonto.

I saw this in theaters with my ex-girlfriend and we both absolutely loved it. I grew up loving the original Evil Dead movies so it was a reasonable fear to wonder if a new entry without Raimi's direction would not work, but thankfully it was absolutely in the spirit of the original and a rad watch. The plot of everyone staying in the cabin to help Mia withdraw from heroin was extremely clever writing and worked perfectly to bolster the others' skepticism in the first act; I absolutely thought that was creatively brilliant. I'm tremendously glad you guys enjoyed it! The new Evil Dead flick coming out in April is looking to be a blast and I cannot wait.

  • @IH8YH
    @IH8YH ปีที่แล้ว +9

i fucking LOVE this movie! so much that i own a digital copy but waited for a physical release of the extended version.
i already said this on the Ash Vs Evil Dead finale video: Director of Evil Dead Rises Lee Cronin has said in an interview that his approach to the new movie is like, what if there are 3 books, the version from the cemetary in Army of Darkness. The original continuity is one book, THIS movie is the second book and Evil Dead Rise is the third book. They all are very similar but different enough.
i so love this movie, its EASILY the best horror remake-reboot, rebootqual, whatever you wanna call it, i just see it as another entry in the Kandaarian Mythology and they all exist in the same universe at different times.
i love how with this movie they brought back an absolute tour de force of a movie style, no pause, just pure terror and massive gore, something that was missing in horror movies for a while (granted theres the saw and hostel franchise but thats different... thats only gore for gores sake)
i also LOVE that HBO higher ups when leadership changed in Fall 2022 checked in on the state of Evil Dead Rise and decided to put it in theaters instead of releasing it on Streaming immediatly as it was planned. I hope it makes a ton of money and they do more Evil Dead. Horror is in high demand in cinemas these days, success of other horror is proof (when even crap like Terrifier makes a shitload of money compared to production cost).

Okay. So... I COULD use this comment and talk about everything about the different comments and statements by the different Evil Dead directors and how confusing the placement of this specific film in the universe is, but I know Sam has already read my essay about all of it on Patreon, so I'm assuming you both know. So I won't do that. Instead, I'll talk about how much of a masterpiece this film is on jow to execute a Chekhov's Gun and how often it's done on the film.
    1. Olivia and Eric bringing up Mia's OD and previous death and revival via defibrillator clues into how David will think of a way to save her. Killing someone is how you get the demon out of them, so killing and reviving them should mean they're fine. And he's right. He just forgot to make sure Eric was actually dead before he did anything, because Mia technically counted as one of the five souls. But I can't blame him. Eric took a BEATING. Stabbed by a glass shard, stabbed multiple times with a needle, shot by a nail gun over 15 times, hand split in half, beaten with a crowbar, and stabbed again by a box cutter. I'd think he was dead, too.
    2. David gives Mia a necklace thag is supposed to make her will stronger, and he also crosses his heart and hopes to die. By the end of the film, he's dead, and Mia is the last one left. She picks up the necklace just before the Abomination rises, and she ends up beating it AFTER ripping her hand off. Some strong will for sure.
    3. When first going down into the basement, David notes how the stairs are old and moldy. When Natalie goes down later, she steps on the same step again, but it doesn't break. Then when she scrambles to get out, the stairs break under her weight.
    4. The book mentions three ways to get rid of the demon. David, being the greatest poet ever, does all three. He burns Olivia, chops Natalie, and buries Mia. In the theatrical cut, this is removed.
    5. In one of the pictures on the wall, Mia and David's mom is seen wearing a red dress. The same red dress David puts Mia in before burying her. Not a Chekhov's Gun, technically, but it's interesting how even though he wasn't there for his mom's last moments, he made sure that he would he would be with Mia in her last moments, and that, in a way, their mom would be with them. Though it didn't look like Mia was wearing her pajamas (which she was also wearing in the shower?) under the dress, so did David undress her first? Weird.
    6. Both the nail gun and turkey slicer were seen in regular, every day tasks. And then they were both seen nailing and slicing Mia. Interesting. Kinda sexist of those tools, but interesting.
    7. The hole David found the dog in is used later by Mia when running from the Abomination. How did she know it was there (aside from seeing it in the moment)? She and David used to visit the cabin, so they probably used it as a hide and seek spot. Though that makes me wonder if they also knew the basement was there. They probably did, though, because David instinctively moved the rug knowing there was something under there. I mean the dod was scratching and sniffing, but David didn't act surprised there was something under there.
    8. When David drives to the cabin, there is a shot that looks like him driving on water. Later, when he attempts to leave with Mia, the only way to leave would be for him to actually drive on water. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see it happen.
    9. The theatrical cut, which didn't show the dismemberment of Natalie by the chainsaw, saw David skip past the chainsaw to make the defibrillator. Mia later skips past a... Katana? I don't know, I'm not a sword expert. But she goes for the chainsaw, instead. Coincidentally enough, the Abomination opts to go for the sword when attacking Mia in the wall of the shed. The Abomination is the only one who didn't change its mind about what it wanted to do.
    10. Partly connected to 9, when Mia has to fill up the chainsaw after realizing it's empty, despite it never appearing in the theatrical cut, this is because David used it to chop Natalie. And while it ruins the Chekhov's Gun aspect of the chainsaw, it's a neat detail. You can also notice that the saw already has some dried blood on it.
    11. I don't think there is an 11. I just think it's a cool number to end on. But actually, you'll notice that there are three vehicles in the film. And old rusted yellow Delta, a blue minivan, and a red jeep. The Delta remains in the woods, where it will continue to rust, and eventually blend in with the brown surroundings of the woods. The minivan crashes into water. And the jeep is drenched in blood. It's not a Chekhov's Gun, either, but it's some cool color coordination.

Personally I think it's much more rewatchable than ED2 or AoD. Both of those mainly rely on the comedy, and while Sam Raimi really wanted to be a comedy writer and director, I don't think he's that great at it. The comedy never really lands the same as it did before. The show's comedy always lands the same, but the movies don't quite do it for me.

My Internal Monologue: Just you wait...
I really think this film is super underrated. People wanted it to be a comedy like Army of Darkness, but it was just an over-the-top brutal horror film... which is actually close to the original Evil Dead, just with a much bigger budget and some, frankly, exceptional performances (especially from Jane Levy). And at the end of the day, it's super entertaining. I love how it gets crazier as it goes and is just utterly relentless.

This movie is darker, scarier and more violent than the original film. This is what Sam Raimi originally had in mind for his Evil Dead movies, but instead turned them into action comedy horror films.

  • @rollfizzlebeef6619
    @rollfizzlebeef6619 ปีที่แล้ว

To me, this movie is still the gold standard on how to properly do a remake/reboot of a classic horror franchise. Not afraid to do it's own thing without trying to just copy what came before, while absolutely keeping the _spirit_ of the original, and including _just_ enough nods to the original franchise to satisfy old-school fans, but not leaning on those nods like a crutch. It knows what people loved about the original: over-the-top blood and gore, an awesome lead character, and tons of cool practical effects, and delivers it in spades. And to top it all off it manages to be a pretty good allegory for drug addiction, withdrawal, and recovery.
As an old school "Evil Dead" fan I totally went into this expecting it to not hold a candle to the original, especially with no Ash and no Sam Raimi at the helm, but it ended up completely blowing me away. Whenever I marathon the "Evil Dead" franchise, I now consider it incomplete without including this movie. Mia more than holds her own as a main character, and I really hope she pops again in some future installment of the franchise. Would've loved to have seen her and Ash together at some point, but doesn't look like that's gonna happen now with Bruce Campbell saying he's retired from playing Ash after the TV show.
Some other people have mentioned checking out "Drag Me to Hell". I'm gonna dissent a little bit in saying that I've never cared too much for that one, but you guys should definitely check it out to decide for yourselves. It's closest in tone to "Army of Darkness" in that it leans way more heavily on comedy than scares, but without a charismatic lead character like Ash to carry it, a lot of it fell flat for me. There are some fun gross-out scenes though, and the séance scene is pretty hilarious. Worth checking out if you dig Raimi, especially since I believe it is his only horror movie outside of the "Evil Dead" franchise so far.
If you guys want another great horror franchise to get into now that you've finished "Evil Dead", I would highly recommend since you've already done the first "Child's Play" movie to continue with the "Chucky" franchise. Much like "Evil Dead" the tone swings wildly from horror to comedy, sometimes from movie to movie, and sometimes within the same movie. Then once you're done with the movies you get to watch an awesome TV show that is on the same level as "Ash vs. Evil Dead" quality-wise

    Not actually a remake, technically.
    This IS Evil Dead 4.
It's effectively the realization of what Sam Raimi WANTED to do with the original The Evil Dead, but didn't have the tech or budget or skills to do it.
Evil Dead 2 was sort of a remake, but it veered from the original intent by heading into comedy.
This version doesn't add the comedy, so it's like the purest realization of the original Evil Dead vision.....except that Sam Raimi himself didn't direct it.....

At 2:18 Technically JASON is a deadite. In Jason goes to hell, the director had the Necronomicon from Evil Dead on set, establishing that Pamela Vorhees used it to bring her son back. So JASON, is a deadite. Which kind of explains a lot.

This was intended to have a sequel that teamed Ash & Mia up, but the TV series happened instead and you know that's more than a fair trade off considering how awesome that show is, I'd not trade it for any unmade movie. Some others mentioned you watching 'Drag Me To Hell, I'd also vote for that, it's tamer than Evil Dead but still has that creepy Sam Raimi goodness you'll enjoy.
Thanks for watching this one and completing the full (released) run of Evil Dead, it was great fun to watch you do it.

Roque Baños did a fantastic job with the music. I'm not a big fan of horror scores, they tend to be very ambient and only work well with the film images, but I can enjoy this one even on CD. The detail of the sirens is so reminiscent of Silent Hill.

I love that they just went for it. Maybe I need to rewatch it but I've never really enjoyed Evil Dead 1 all that much. Evil Dead 2 has always been my favourite. I would put this one right up there and that's not something I do lightly. They went into this knowing that they wanted to make Evil Dead hardcore R rated again. Practical effects wherever possible, maximum gore and scary as possible. They accomplished their mission easily. I watched all the behind the scenes stuff when this was coming out. Practical where possible was their goal. The bit where the girl is chopping off her arm with the electric knife. Apparently it was hard to tell where her actual arm was once the fake blood started pouring out and it was almost luck that she hit the mark perfectly since her real arm was very close to where the cutting started.
It's too bad the director isn't doing Evil Dead Rise. The fact that it was supposed to go straight to streaming and is now getting a theatrical release bodes well for the future of the franchise. I appreciate that they aren't trying to simply copy what came before. Have one lead character take on the deadites. Bruce Campbell cannot be replaced in that role and anyone who tries is facing an uphill battle. Making it a demonic force that takes everyone means you never know who is safe. It's kind of crazy that our ostensible protagonist is the lead antagonist for most of the runtime.
