As originally scripted, Mac and Childs were going to start a game of chess on that table at the end...I wish they had kept it in. There was a terrific Dark Horse comic book sequel where a rescue team finds them both alive and they start back home on a submarine...and again, things don't go well...

@@justinplayfair4638 Yeah, because of this being the original ending my headcanon is that Childs is The Thing. It makes sense given that he said he saw Blair just before the lights went out, but the lights going out meant that Blair was in the generator room when Childs said he saw him. It also satisfies the theme of Mac losing a game of strategy and essentially flipping the table to ensure that both lose.
I know there are other viable theories, but I like this one the most.

@@FulciLives So many people don't seem to get that. They try so hard to "prove" that Childs (or occasionally McReady) is a Thing. The ending is amazing BECAUSE we don't know.

@@llothar68 Yes, because every person of intelligence has to be intelligent in english in order to count. Especially if they are from Norway, living at a base established by Norwegians, that is populated exclusively by Norwegians. They have to know English in order to be Norwegian scientists. It's a requirement to be a scientist to know English. The ignorance really is astounding.
It's actually very likely, because funnily enough, not that many people in non-English speaking countries learn to speak English unless they are planning to visit English-speaking countries or interact with people from English-speaking countries. That's just like expecting me, an American who has no intention of visiting Korea or talking a lot with Koreans, to learn Korean on the basis that in some emergency, the only people around would somehow only speak Korean.
As we find out in the prequel, the majority of the scientists at the Norwegian base DID speak English... It's just by chance the only guys who survived to chase the dog in the helicopter were the only guys who DIDN'T.

Would they pick any other personal who forgot to speak english (norwegians have mandatory english language for 9 years and no dubbed movies, most songs are also in english). So technical personal who can't read manuals for complicated technical devices that surely are not translated into english. Fucking no.

This movie is what we call Cosmic Horror , or Lovecraftian Horror. The original short story ( WHO GOES THERE) had a few things in it that were not used in the movie.
At one point one of the characters pointed out that there was no evidence that the Thing flew the spaceship; maybe the reason it crashed was The Thing was doing to the crew of the ship what it was now doing to the men at the base. At another point just before the test, one character ( who was not used in the movie) was worried; he wonder if he was such a good imitation that he didn't know if he was really himself. Turns out, he was himself.

    • @rsrt6910
      @rsrt6910 4 ปีที่แล้ว +46

There was no outward indication that the ship was damaged. Either they lost control because the Thing got loose on the crew or maybe, like the Norwegians and the Americans, realized they had to keep the Thing from reaching a populated area and purposely crashed it on, what was at the time, an uninhabited Earth, even aiming for Antarctica where the Thing would remain frozen until the Earth was striped of all life when sun became a red giant.
Then humans had to evolve and built helicopters and ruined the whole plan.

Yean but they were shooting at film props. The really shocking stuff for me was the making of footage of the 2011 prequel where the actor playing the Norwegian guy Lars was actually torching the stuntman playing the Juliette-thing in the kitchen scene. For very long seconds. I know I wouldn't be able to do it even if he was wearing protective gear.

Even better: watch the scene where MacReady blows up Palmer-Thing. Watch Kurt Russell when the explosion goes off. He was thrown back in the scene, because he was thrown back in real life (using actual dynamite). He didn't know how much of an explosion it would produce. He's pretty lucky he was't seriously injured.

      @@RichterLocke
My dad once told me a personal story involving himself and dynamite. He used to buy old piles of sawdust, left in the woods after milling (in the old days, the mills were portable, and would travel from location to location, leaving HUGE piles of sawdust behind.. years later people like him would "recycle" the sawdust). The sawdust was often very hard and solidified by the time he got to it. He would blow it apart with dynamite in order to be able to move it (dynamite was still fairly readily available in the late 70s-early 80s). One time on a huge pile, he dug down deep with a pair of post hole diggers, and set about 5 (can't remember the amount he said he used at first) sticks of dynamite in the hole, lit the fuse, and stood well back. He said he could barely hear the explosion, nothing really happened. So he tried again, using about 15 sticks. He said the entire pile lifted off the ground, and there was some sound, but it didn't disperse the pile AT ALL. The pile was like concrete, and the apparently the structure just absorbed the blast. A little pissed off at this point, he assumed he must have gotten some "bad" dynamite. So he took a stick, lit it, and threw it about 30-40 feet from him (to test it). He said the blast nearly ripped the clothes off his body, and could barely hear anything for a week. After that, he said he had much higher respect for the power of dynamite. And, probably, the hardness of old sawdust.......

Not to mention, the ambiguity of certain assimilations such as the shadow that the dog attacks and if Childs or MacReady are a Thing are hallmarks of why this movie is still so good. It leaves things to the imagination to allow for a more scary experience. I would probably put this movie in my top ten of all time just because how everythings perfect the directing, the look of the film, the crew, acting minimalistic sound track and the best practical effects and the suspense. Just like Alien it keeps you on edge from start to finisih and that makes it an almost flawless movie.

I love the shot of the dog watching them come back with a burnt "Thing" specimen, it knows it's worst enemy are scientist so when it saw that it knew it had to act fast, ironically this would end up blowing it's own cover when the normal dogs were alerting the camp. One even sacrifices itself to kill one of the doctors (the chest opening scene) or was forced to blow it's cover because Mecrady was gonna blow them all up.

There is a 2011 prequel to this film that tells the story of what happened at the Norwegian camp, but it lacks the paranoia and claustrophobia of this one. I think I prefer it when you react to a film with your wife, but I'm happy enough either way.

Carpenter did an amazing job as director and is rightfully always credited for his skilled work, Bottin did an amazing job on the creature FX, and just like Carpenter deserves the praise for all his stunning work, but you also have to hand it to Morricone who's score is an inspiring piece of work that builds tension from that first note right up till the end credits.
The Thing is in a very short list of films like Jaws, The Godfather, and Shawshank Redemption where everyone came together at the top of their game to make a perfect film and if you were to switch out just one member of the cast of crew the film would suffer as a result.
