Singapore PM Warns of U.S.-China Miscalculation Over Taiwan

  • Tensions over Taiwan risk leading to a miscalculation between the U.S. and China as both nations step up activity around the island, Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong warned. “We should be concerned,” Lee said Wednesday night in an interview with Bloomberg Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum event in Singapore. “I don’t think it’s going to war overnight, but it is in a situation where you can have a mishap or a miscalculation and be in a very delicate situation,” he said.

He speaks like a LKY, insightful and deeply thought out. His views will be well respected. 30 years ago, no one would give a toss of what he says because Singapore was a backwater then, same with China at that time. Achievement and success bring great respect for any country; jealousy and envy will not make US a greater country. US is still a "preferred" to be the greatest country in the world due to its system of open government. There are however too many bad seeds within the country holding it back, which the country would do well to improve on.

The fact that China can still take an interest in joining a framework that America set up, even though it is implicitly designed to cut China out goes to show how deeply rational and intelligent the Chinese leadership really is. I think what PM Lee said in passing that Chinese leaders think about these things very carefully is missed by most of the western viewers. You are now dealing, as Kishore said, a highly rational, high intelligent leadership that is very very seldom given into emotional and pathological outbursts and stupid mistakes.
China is going to rise and overtake America because this crucial characteristics of Chinese leadership will enable them to make far less dumbass mistakes and focus their attention and all their effort in growing their country. America will "lose" as in losing their hegemony because its leadership is always going to waver between barely functional to utter disaster. Those mistakes will add up and they will compound and America will eventually find itself in an unenviable position that they screwed themselves into.

While I agree fully that peaceful co-existance is the best for this globes future I would question your thinking who will have the superior power to determine how this peaceful co-existence will be organized.
And I clearly disagree your assumption China = Asia.
US not "must learn", but has already established with Asian states like Japan, South-Korea, Taiwan and others a way of co-existance to the advantage of everybody.
US is working on its relationship with India after the Soviet Union disappeared as its major challenge.
On the point of China US had decided 40/50 years ago to pop up China as a counter-balance for possible Soviet Union expansion. This decision became obsolete when the Soviet Union broke up and this decision broke when China challenged recently in stronger way its neighbor countries and decided to crack down Hongkong (Hongkong did represent much more what US hoped/expected China to develop to to continue/stay with its 40/50 years ago decision - on one side I can understand PM Loong excusing China's crack-down on Hongkong being a necessity for clear common rulership of all China, on the other side it is also clear that such "win" of communism over democracy has consequences and I feel many Asians have not yet understood how strong the more and more becoming clear consequences are).
US has decided to cut China from its easy access to ever advancing western technologies which was the solid fundament on which China was able to blossom up and this already taken cut decision leaves few chance for China to re-establish "full" access. After such hard decision I think the reality is not on US to learn how to co-exist with China, but rather on China to decide if it really thinks its fundamental position is so strong that it can win a may be not military challenge, but the system challenge communism versus democracy. Seeing China's ambigue behavior on the war Russia-Ukraine you can clearly see how difficult the situation for China is, having no real freedom to do what it wants (may be not even being full clear what it wants/is best for it) while compared to China US has a rather rock-solid position allowing it to go without major problems in whatever direction it wants to go.
Seeing no unity/alliance between China and Asia by heart but rather some open or hidden thinking of competition I would out of above points rather see the situation as:
After US cut China's access to advanced technology China must learn how to co-exist with not only the US, but US and all its allies emphasizing democracy and dominating the world of permanently advancing technology on which China alone has few chance to win/dominate, unless it is able to establish strong partners. China is trying to establish such partnerships for example in the form of BRICS, but currently I fail to see how China can succeed when all US allies support by heart (somehow pushed by the need for atomic protection) the US position and therefore work in US direction to contain China (see for example recent G7 summit in Germany where in addition India, Indonesia, South-Africa, Senegal and Argentina got invited, please note 2 of these 5 being member of BRICS).

      @ 1000100 Ten
Yes, saying "America had the ability to recover from what she does to itself" is indeed funny.
One small yet important correction when listening to what is expressed around 4:00: I think he did not mean the past "America had" but rather the present AND future "America has".
Some examples how I see this funny sentence:
US has opened Japan by military force in 1853/54, but when Japan behaved in a way that was not acceptable by US (it expanded in a cruel way and to some extent challenged US) this problem one has to say US created for itself was corrected during 2nd world.
US has selected Donald Trump, but then it selected Joe Biden.
US made China blossom up in a way that I think can be compared to some extent to Japan more than 100 years ago, but when China acted in ways the US does not like same as with Japan before the 2nd world war in Pacific started, US pushed the break. I think many decisions on how to break have already been taken and they are in execution without normal people having got knowledge about these brake decisions or having noticed their initial and still to show up full effect. Japan decided to eliminate the US brake decisions by attacking Pearl Harbour, how China will decide on recent brake decisions needs still to be seen (as I see today's situation, while US has already take decisions and is in the execution phase China has internally not yet decided which way to go, rephrased, inside China fights are ongoing in which direction to proceed)
It is easy and seems to be logical to assume China will replace US as No.1 might on this globe extrapolating the past 40 years development into the future by scaling it with the population relation of 330:1.350. However, the rise of Europe to dominate the world has shown that technology is a key point and the location and control of technology evolution is not at all according to the speed of China's rise or 330:1.350 relation, but very much to the favour of US (western technology is not developed by US alone, but by US+Europe+Japan+South-Korea+Taiwan+...). Also in geostrategic military terms US has huge advantages with no nearby power that can or would dare to challenge it (US is protected by 2 huge oceans), while China has at its borders several powers that have their own will and either internally the technology/power to at least challenge China or an alliance structure that puts them in a clearly superior position.
Another future development is, that today China has a population of 1.350 million, but this will shrink in future. Vice versa all indication today is US population will expand, one reason lying inside US having a rapidly by immigration grown population, the other reason being that many people still like to enter US as immigrants and it just depends on US decisions how powerful this immigration flow continues (similarly China could allow immigration and if so the success will lie on the side who has to offer the more attractive situation for the smartest of the immigrants where I again think today this is clearly the US).
In conclusion, even though it sounds funny in the way he said above sentence, I think he is absolutely correct to state the similar matter in several other not funny ways starting around 3:00 and very explicitly at 3:47 where he states in a rearranged way "I think the assumption that US is a declining power that will get replaced by China is WRONG. China is clearly a power, but it is today not clear if China can find its position in a then less US dominated world or will either be forced to or by its own will stay outside".

While I think Mr. Lee is a highly intelligent man. I find his constant pro-US views misguided. His evaluations seem more based on the past than the approaching future. The fact that he perpetuates the idea of more US increased expansion into the western pacific Asian region. Seems to be propagating the expansion of US hegemony.
Also his opinion that the US decline is far into the future is disconnected from reality. Even at the time of this video the US was already a deteriorating dysfunctional dystopian state.
The US is incapable of competing with China.
China has more young graduate degreed (350+ million) which is more the the US population. China has the most modern advanced infrastructure in the world while the US wallows in aging neglected infrastructure.
China produces and manufactures at a rate (speed) the US could never compete on.
Anyway my point being he seems to view things from the past rather than the present and future

What he is talking about US has a naval base in Singapore. Singapore is US and Israel's agent in Southeast Asia nothing else.

Singapore let US ships dock. They also let other nations' ship dock there because Singapore is a natural harbor between East and West. Singapore may buy US weapons but it is not US's agent like Israel.

LHL is no visionary leader his views are academic and shallow based on event unfolding at the present. There little substance and value of his views that can be beneficial to guide other nations.
