  • Dialogue with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong
Defying the odds and achieving the unexpected - in short, reinventing our destiny as a small state - has been a hallmark of modern Singapore’s success under the leadership of the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew. To mark the 100th birth anniversary of the nation’s first prime minister, the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and the Institute of Policy Studies, National University of Singapore (NUS), are jointly organising the “Reinventing Destiny” conference.

Our leaders must learn to take tough questions if they are to represent us internationally (look at how well LKY and LHL take questions from the international press). You improve only when you go through the baptism of fire. Our new leaders should not expect only slowballs and lowballs from the meek & obedient reporters from CNA and ST who are trained / paid to publish only the Govt's side and never to ask any tough follow up questions even if there are huge gaps in the answers given. Our leaders will not get better if they are coddled that way.

Also when Prime Minister talked about Chinese leadership he talked about them being competent and smart technocrats, he did not offer the same kind of generosity towards American leadership.... Very subtle and very diplomatic, offered his viewpoints without being disrespectful or condescending, honestly I cant think of a single western politician being this sophisticated nowadays, everything comes out of their mouth is war, race, gender, sanction and the rest are just pure lies.

20:15 A small thing, but it's amazing to see the difference between state media interviews and foreign ones. FZ doesn't let LW off the hook when he tries not to answer a question:
LW: Particularly after the recent incidents and the setbacks we have suffered, it's really for us to reflect, learn, and grow stronger from that experience and do everything we can to win the confidence and trust of Singaporeans.
FZ: What did you learn from them?
LW: Well, I believe we we start off actually from a very high base and that high base of trust between the people and the elected government and the PAP is still there, it's still there, so what I... my immediate priority is to see how I can strengthen that reservoir of social capital and trust and ensure that we can continue to earn the confidence and mandate of Singaporeans when we next go to the polls.
FZ: ...What did you learn from this from the various scandals and problems?
