Hobbywing SC8 vs GoolRC 60A ESC | Arrma Granite Upgrade

- We recently did a brushed to brushless upgrade and comparison with our Arrma Granite Mega. The net result was a gain of 5mph...but a loss of starting torque. It would cog so bad, that the truck would barely move uphill from a start! This was really no good.
Enter a Hobbywing SC8 ESC to save the day! With the extra amperage this ESC can provide, it has to be better, right? Beyond fixing the cogging, does it also help with top-end speed? Watch to find out!

Good video. That's what I like about Castle. They give you a general idea on the box what size vehicle it's good for. I had no idea that stuff even mattered. I figured 3s is 3s, 2s is 2s. etc. But ya. it all makes a difference. I stared learning about this just last week when my switch in my 3800 castle set up went bad and I put in a 3300kv system from my Associated SC10 just to go bash that day. I thought I'd have more torque with the Lower KV motor. But it did just what your description said your Granite did. Cogging so bad it actually WOULD not go up hill. I'd have to roll back down backwards and spin around the get the truck going again. LOL So ya. More amps means more go! We learn every day in this hobby even if we've been doing it since 86.

@@RoadsideRC he turns 5 today. So I got him the mega. so its a tad slower And so we can upgrade it together.

Do you change the punch settings for the sc8?. They came soft cause they were used in the terremoto which had brass pinion.

I have had the same experience with goolrc ESCs. I had one that was amazing so I bought another one when I was upgrading a Redcat Volcano to brushless and the ESC was laggy on take off. They seem to be hit or miss at best.

You should make a video on how to make it strong enough to take 4s like what should I upgrade for it to be able to take 4s and be strong still
...it might just be good like this! I guess we will need to test it!
@@RoadsideRC alright let me know because maybe the driveshafts may need a upgrade on 4s but idk. Also does the Arrma Outcast 4s body fit on the granite if you have both?

hey troy I got a typhon mega that i went brushless with . Its got a traxxas vxl motor (pending to change it) and a Mamba X esc on 3s the little typhon flys very nice also on stock spur atm with a 20T pinion

Great video! These Granite's are absolutely amazing RC's. A friend of mine got one and I made some videos with it, and it left me very impressed. Makes me wish I started with Arrma and not Traxxas in a way. Traxxas is just overpriced and outdated. Well, their cars like the Rustler, Bandit, Stampede, and Slash at least. Anyway, I can't wait to see this truck complete!
I agree with you 100%. Really seems like a lot of the Traxxas vehicles are from the 1990s....because they are.
Still - we have to appreciate them as the "gateway drug" that gets folks interested in RC in the first place!
I have been wanting to get an SC8 for one of my builds. I was close to getting one, but I found a used Max 10 for a really good price and went with that instead. Max 10 has been doing great in my Senton though
what's awesome about the V3 brushed trucks is that they come with the 4s diffs as well! I think they have all plastic inputs, but the gears are way better than the older ones

Needs a metal drivetrain. Metal diffs, spur, and pinion gear. Then you can throw a 3670 or 3665 motor in to go with the ESC. 2650 to 3200 kv
So far, it has needed nothing to stay brushless.
I have even driven it on 4S and it is fine!
Better off just getting the stock arrma motor and ESC and guarantee hitting 50mph. nice to see some different options though!
Purchasing the 3S BLX really is the best choice instead of going Mega and then upgrading!
I have a Senton BLX 3s. I'm not impressed by the Arrma system. The front bearing on the motor fails often and the truck stutters for a good 2 or 3 seconds before it starts moving. After the truck gets rolling its a blast to drive, but the bearing reliability issues makes that motor a tough sell. I would look into different options if I was going to upgrade one from a brushed system.
So... are the GoolRC 60A BL esc generally ok? I found one on eBay for only $11 brand new, and I’m waiting for it to arrive. I wanna put it into my volcano 16 w/ a 4100kv 2845 bl motor.
Yes - I typically have very good luck with the GoolRC setups.
Putting this 60A esc in a 1/16 - that is a LOT of power for that small truck. It should do fine.

Might be CRAZY!
I have both the SC8 and the GoolRc esc. SC8 is miles better. Throttle curve is steady amd precise whereas the GoolRc is erratic and too aggresive. If you have the money go Hobbywing any day.

The slipper clutch was too loose. Fixed!
Try the orange goolrc motors. I was told they were better but idk. I have the 4300kv orange motor with the same esc in a 2wd stampede and it’s a rocket. Stock spur and 19t pinion . I’ve never been able to get it topped out before flipping over
You are right - the motors I had from GoolRC before were all orange. I specifically chose this one since it matched a little closer with my goals for this truck.
What pinion are you using on this setup?

Hobbywing SC8 is 100 x better ,.. and more capacety 2s a 4s ,.. and is progamable ,.. more punch ,.. more brake,... etc,....
