Malaysians had in the past experienced unfavorable misdeeds from a few mischievous Nigerian. It had damaged the reputation of Africans or black men in general.
Now most of us had put all that behind us and frankly I personally believe Africans are among the best mannered visitors to Malaysia.

I used to rent my fully furnished apartment to an African couple for only RM500 a month because they don't have more than that to pay (normal price RM1,000). They stayed there for seven years. During that time we were very best friends. When they didn't pay for three months, I went to see them. I found out that they moved. When I entered the apartment, it was totaly empty. They took every single thing from my apartment. On top of that they wrote dirty words all over the wall. I'm not the only Malaysian had this experience. It has nothing to do with skin colour. I'm a very black Malay just like you.

We regret learning about the treatment you had here, as you described. You may simply be the unfortunate recipient of our past experiences when dealing with some Africans, notably the Nigerians. Malaysia used to be a favourite vacation spot for African travellers, particularly Nigerians. We didn't receive many African tourists to our country at the time, with the exception of certain diplomat personnel from African nations and Black Americans and Black Britons.
We consequently did not discriminate against anyone based on their skin tone prior to a sudden inflow of numerous Africans into our country because our Malaysian Indian population also has dark complexion, so we have no issues at all with black people. Then we began to get phishing emails from people claiming to be from Nigeria informing us they needed to park their money in our accounts in order to escape paying astronomical taxes to their governments. Of course, a lot of us fell for these frauds.
When some of us rented out our apartments to Africans, their neighbours also complained to them. They don't appear to comprehend the customs of Malaysians, who don't make noise after midnight, especially when they are intoxicated with their pals. Even some of our taxi drivers have had unpleasant experiences when their African passengers runnel away from paying the fare. As a result of all these complaints, we made to the authorities, who then began to take stern action by beginning to securitize all male African visitors to our country, it eventually made headlines. It's just unfortunate that an innocent person like you must endure poor treatment from those of us who have a negative view about Africans based on their previous interactions with Africans.

I think it's not because of your colour or history but it's the country you come from seems to be the problem.. Bcoz we have a bad criminal history with Nigerian. We tend to be prejudice with black people from nigeria. That's why if you're a black people from UK for example there's no problem at all. For people ignoring you when asking where the restroom is maybe they can't speak english. And usually we don't say restroon we use toilet instead. It's just my opinion. But racism is everywhere around the world. Even Malaysia is multiracial country some people still being racist.

Sorry for your bad experiences as a black man in Malaysia. Previously we have a lot of problems with Nigerian not with other African people. Before, many Nigerian came to Malaysia and commit crime such as black money scams, brawling in the streets, harassing locals and some other things not worth mentions. That is why Malaysian are indifference towards black people, especially Nigerian. Things might get improved but it will takes a long time to heal the wounds.

We used to have many Africans here. Some working, some over staying here illegally, some studying... There were Nigerians, Gambians, , Ghanians, malians , Guineans, congolese, ... all nationalities. And sadly , most of us had bad experience with Africans. They were loud and noisy, always drinking and drunk, always involved in brawls and fights, stayed up late, like to disturb local women even those hijabis with jilbabs, they never go to mosque or Church even when they claimed themselves muslims or christians, they group among themselves only, never try to learn the local languages or culture and scammers in the internet were predominantly Africans. The african womens clothes were offensive, too revealing. They were obnoxious neighbors, continously drinking and drunk all night, with no regard to the muslim neighbors. Worst of all, they seemed to consider that behaviour as normal and be proud to be as they were. Always quick to blame others as racists everytime people try to advise or caution them. They like to play victim.. Thats the image of Africans in the mind of most Malaysians. Somebody to be avoided , and we dont mind them skipping our country when they are on holidays. And you cant blame the Malaysians. You create that image yourselves. Its unfortunate though, that some north Africans like the Sudanese, Somalis, Ethiopians, Moroccans, and other north Africans were mistakenly lumped together with these Africans, when actually they are very polite, nice and civil people. The North Africans are always a pleasure to engage with, humble, refined and true gentlemen.

I'm sorry for the experience 😢😢😢.. but to be honest, I m afraid of black people too. I go scammed by a Nigerian (I lost 20K) back in 2008. He claimed that he was a vet from UK, and he offered me medicine for cows/horse. I used to have a farm. The medicine was cheaper because he formulated it himself with his vet team in Thailand. I was very interested and flew over from Kota Kinabalu to KL. Long story short, after the purchase and I got the medicine.. and flew back to Sabah. Showed the med to my vet which later found it to be fake.

If we go to other country and the people in the train there look at us it is not necessarily because we look different from them (be it our skin color or physique) but most likely because we dressed or behave differently from them. Even in our own country people will look at us if we dress or behave so differently from the others. That's natural human reaction not racism. BTW, people with dark or black skin color are not alien to Malaysians.

We are not really racist actually. We dont judge or treat people differently due to their skin specifically.
But it is more because we had a lot of bad experiences in the past. And if somebody “dont really want to talk to you”, most of the time it is actually they just “being careful”.
    1. At one point, there were a lot of cases where the nigerians smuggling drugs. And they even used innocent local women to smuggle drugs. And as a result, the women got prisoned etc. So especially for women, we were thought to be extra careful and dont talk to strangers and dont even accept if anyone ask your help to bring something for them.
And the cases are not just buy seducing or befriended with the local (especially women), much of the cases also use hypnotized method where the women/the persons did not even aware what they’re doing once their eyes meet with the nigerian person.
That is why when the women got approached, they immediately will get away, afraid to even talk face to face.
My brother in law even got hypnotized in front of a bank and gave the person RM5000 in a split second.
    2. Secondly, about the rental. Oh boy…. They’re a lot of cases where the nigerians rented, they left the house totally in disaster, they thrashed the house to the point that the cost to clean and fix everything are even beyond the rental cost itself.
So all in all, most malaysians are just traumatized by all these incidents, not to actually be racist or judge people by their skin colours.
We’re generally not a racist or judgemental person.
But I am still very sorry to you for having to experienced all those.
Trust me, once we get to know the person, and actually certain that the person is not bad, we will be the most nicest and kind person.
Until the scars totally faded, unfortunately the prejudice towards black (which mostly actually is aed towards nigerians), will still be there.
But I can assure you, nowadays it is much much much better.
I hope it will be completely gone one day.
Hope the bad experiences will not deterred you to come to malaysia again, and see the beauty of malaysia and its people.

Hey man, I totally get you, and I'm a malay. Even we feel discriminated at times. Even heck, ask the malaysian indians, or the malaysian chinese they would say the same. in instances of their life they would notice some form racism here. so in short, pls do not take it as an exclusive issue to you being black. and this is not an attempt to downplay your issue. its just that what i would say is that like any racism, it always accompanied by a underlying notion. for whatever reason, its always somebody had done something that is not pleasing to other people, mine included. you can confirm this by asking a local malay, chinese or indian. its there.
in the case of being black in malaysia, the backdrop of the notion against you guys is that in since abt 15 years back, certain parts of kl, there are black people who came into the country disguising as college student and residing in certain areas and turning the place into problematic areas. drugs. hookers. rape. if i were to name a place, sunway mentari court and Kepong magna. And I dont say this as a heresay, I saw it with my own eyes.
so due to this, gives a bad rep to whichever black guys who are honest, like you, who came here on good terms.
like a malay proverb " akibat nila setitik, rosak susu sebelanga" which is equivelant to because of one man's action, his whole tribe/people/race is under scrutiny.
So, while me myself is striving against any form of racism as what islam preaches, its unfortunately still there, BUT I can understand what and why it occurs, namely in malaysian context.
now, as you said, newer generations are improving, and I coincide with that and hope we move towards a more wiser and more balanced community. So do bear with us, while we try to improve.
I sincerly hope you wouldn't go any more form of racism, but like you said, don't let it get to you, think positive and move on. all the best

For instance, the taxi driver could have bad experience in the past. To prevent that to happen again, he refuses to sell his service. Seriously, I feel very sorry for you. However, if I were to put myself in their shoes, I might choose the same path.

Well Ayo... I think you have known by now that prejudices against Africans is not because of skin color. Come on... we have 6.8% Indians, that is about 2 millions of the total population. As you know the Indians also have dark skin.. and the Malays also have quite many dark skin individuals. No Ayo... sorry for your bad experiences but really.. we have had many many many bad experiences with Africans, especially Nigerians. Those incidences happened very rampant almost a couple of decades ago. That's why the new generations are less or no racist towards black Africans compared to the older ones. Anyway... time will heal everything.. it's just too bad the bitter taste still lingers for many of us Malaysians.

Here's a fun fact. Malaysia hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1998. Many black people from all over the commonwealth worlds gathered in KL. It was a very successful hosting and I have never heard one case of racism towards black people back then.
.. and another fun fact.., Malaysia launched its semi-pro football league back in 1989. Since then many black footballers or soccer players if you like, have plied their trades here and became succesful with million of fans supporting them. They have no problem whatsoever with racism...
... until the bad Nigerians and few others from other African countries came later and do bad things here. Just google Nigerian scammers in Malaysia, you'll learn a thing or two about that chapter in our history.

Asian in general don't have the time to be a racist. We have lots of things in our mind and being racist is not in the lists. It's not your skin color that raised the issues but your origin. There are so many issues and crimes committed by Nigerian that we have tolerated in the past. So much losses incurred that not even the Nigerian Embassy would want to do something about it. Eventhough such mistreatment is wrong, it is up to you to enlighten them. The moment you pulled the race card especially with the multiethnic multireligion multicultural community like Malaysian, it will be the end game for you. So treat Malaysian as Malaysian and NOT as Nigerian or African. Keep your western narratives to yourself as it does not fit in well in our eastern culture. Remember, we are what we carry in our pockets. What goes around will and never fails to come around. Enjoy your stay and stay positive.
