Hey beautiful family, the views in this video are strictly my assertions and based on my personal experience. Experiences differ for every black in Malaysia. Feel free to share your experience, I believe our videos in one way or the other will advocate for betterment in the future for everyone. BTW, I love Malaysia so much and it's still my favorite in South East Asia so far.
No offence to you, but I personally faced a very bad experience when I rent out my 4+1 rooms apartment unit in Batu Caves to Nigerians. Yes, they were Nigerians and claimed themselves as students. Initially, things were ok. I visited them at the apartment few times to get to know them and share experiences between both countries. My neighbours along my unit reminded me that my tenants a bit noisy at night and a lot of people come and go from my unit. The nightmare began when the tenants failed to pay rental for couple of months. I appealed to them to just leave the apartment soonest possible. I've threatened to make a police report. They were still adamant not to leave the apartment even though they had not paid rental for some couple of months. They left on the 4th or 5th month if I'm mistaken leaving trash, bottles/cans of beers and outstanding electricity and water bills. Anyway, I was glad they left though leaving me with piles of rubbish and outstanding bills to settle. This was a very bad experience I had before against Nigerians. Don't get me wrong. I'm not racist but just being careful. I studied in International Islamic University, Malaysia. I had friends from various backgrounds locally or internationally. And among them were International students from african nations. They were good and well mannered Africans. And that includes YOU! :) We Malaysian accept with open arms to those who are good to us. We are not racist people. We are used to multicultural multilingual multiracial society. This nation children had grew together with different ethnic, different cultures, shared and enjoyed togetherness of different festivals (hari raya, Chinese new year, deepavali, hari gawai and hari keamatan) since childhood. So just be assure that Malaysians are not racist but just being careful. Once they got to know you, they hold no grudges against you as a person. They even allow you to enter their houses and belanja you makan. So, just enjoy your stay and hope to see you travel more around Malaysia to understand better Malaysian diverse cultures:)
Wow, I'm surprised you went through this sir and you were so so kind to me and took me as your brother when I visited Kuantan. Indeed, one bad egg they say spoil the rest. Thank God you still open up your heart to the good Nigerians and Africans in general. Thanks for sharing the sincere experience. There are more good people than bad in every society. On behalf of good Nigerians, I apologize for such bad experience you had. Thanks for sharing sir.
@@Cxs1a3 I think this assumption is not true... many Malaysians are very kind people and just because negative issues happen in some places doesn't mean 99% are racist. If we present ourselves well, Malaysians are ready to accept us. I'm a testimony of that and many others. Thanks
Its a common story. Happened so often that some Managements bans all African tenants. Maybe its a cultural thing , their standard of hygiene and behavior are different. Things in Nigeria are very different. Lifestyle. Especially in rural areas. So what is acceptable to Nigerians may not be to us. Its not just about colour. Its about differences in behavior and culture. In fact other Africans get offended when we ask if they are Nigerian. Are you aware of that?
To minimise discrimination, we all have a role to play to educate those who are less exposed to the international community. I was lucky that during my undergrad study in the US, my friends were also from Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa. We were active in the International Student Association and those early years helped bond me with the rest of the world. We still keep in touch even though we are not young anymore. I was discriminated and almost assaulted in the US for being "Japanese" and told to go home, but was also protected by other Americans who witnessed this guy charging towards me. We all have a role to play to bridge people around us. Malaysia is a complex multi-racial country. Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we get it wrong; but if we get it wrong, food and badminton (finals) bring us together. Malaysia is always in a constant experiment to find the perfect formula. It is not easy but we always try. Bolu, one of my teacher friend asked me where to get good Nigerian cuisine and I told her about you. Let's see when we can meet one of the weekends!
This is very true and deep truth. Malaysia is still in a good state to be honest. Thanks for sharing sir. Surely we can meet one of the weekends. I shall contact you.
You are right with all you have said. I really admired Malaysia from afar so I decided to study here. I am a Ghanaian studying in Malaysia. Many of them don't know Ghana. Unfortunately, I had so much negative experiences than I expected even from the night I landed at the airport. I have been to other countries and am definitely aware of racism. But as a Muslim, I expected Malaysia to be a bit different. I have been in Malaysia for five months and couldn't make any Malaysian friends. People stare at me too much and some even giggle. I am surprised at how even the youth behave foolishly. It broke my desire to make friends because severally you say salaam and they mostly don't respond. I find the older generation more accommodating. Anyway still looking forward to making some friends though. I love meeting people but keep my distance when I feel unwelcome.
Thanks for sharing your experiences and for always staying positive! Racist attitudes are usually the result of a negative experience, or negative things that people hear in the news, etc., which then leads to stereotyping of certain groups. Unfortunately, there are many who make generalizations about a whole race or culture based on the actions of a few. The great thing is that, by setting a good example, you are helping to change perceptions about Nigerians/Africans.
Your behaviour is your friend, if you respect yourself and abide by the country laws and order you won’t get in trouble, discipline is the most anticipated, the way you speak and your gestures as well play big roles.if you are leaving abroad you must learn and follow people lifestyle, you had to even if you don’t like it .As an African myself i have lived in Malaysia for long time I had good and bad experiences but overall Malaysian have good people and bad people as well .
I agree that not all Malaysians have a good disposition, however I believe that this is more often due to their personal limitations than your skin tone. First off, not all Malaysians speak English fluently. As a result, they may try to be brief with you, especially if your accent makes it difficult for them to hear you. The second possibility is that you are only the unfortunate beneficiary of our prior interactions with some Africans, particularly Nigerians. At one point, Malaysia was a popular destination for people from Africa. With the exception of a few diplomats from African countries, Black Americans, and Black Britons, we didn't receive many African tourists before. Since our Malaysian Indian population also has a dark complexion, we did not discriminate against anyone based on their skin tone prior to a sudden influx of many Africans into our country. As a result, we have no issues with black people actually. Then, we started receiving phishing emails from individuals posing as Nigerians telling us that they should deposit money in our accounts in order to avoid paying exorbitant taxes to their governments. Naturally, a number of us were duped by these scams. The neighbours of several of us who rented out their apartments to Africans also complaint about them. They don't seem to understand Malaysian customs, which forbid loud noises after midnight, especially when they started drinking with their friends. Even some of our taxi drivers have had horrible encounters when of their African passengers running away from paying the fare, It eventually made reputation as a result of all the complaints we made to the authority, who started to take preventive action by beginning to securitize all male African visitors to our country. It's just terrible that someone as innocent as you should have to put up with bad behaviour from those of us who have unfavourable opinions on Africans based on our own dealings with Africans in the past.
@@paulakinsande - Many people want to live permanently in Malaysia, despite the fact that this is not an easy feat. However, there are still many options that are less difficult to pursue than the idea of moving permanently, even though there are a number of requirements that must firstly be met. Almost so many bad experience. It makes local really sceptical and worried. But not only Africans, same goes to arabs or Iranians.. It's not easy to convinced as things keep on going happens 😯
Well, I am of the opinion that as Nigerians we really need to situate the seeming coldness of some Malaysians to dark skinned persons from behavioural, historical and wider policy contexts. First, Malaysia had very little contact with black persons especially from Africa not until the education tourism which started more recently and aggressively in about 2003/2004. The little contact they had with Nigerians were mostly from very few traders who actually preferred China because of commercial reasons. So less contact will result in less assimilation and interaction. Even now, I am not sure of the extent of trading relationship between Nigeria and Malaysia on a government level beyond the story that the International Travel Passports ( I do not know the authenticity) are produced in Malaysia. Now compare Nigeria's interaction with for example China or India in the region. 2. The Media is always an opinion shaper whether we like it or not. Unfortunately, dark skinned persons especially from Africa have been badly portrayed as thieves, scrupulous and under- achievers in the World. Anything white is seen as superior even amongst white skinned countries or semi- white skinned countries like India. 3. Malaysia has adopted the model of closed door to migration in its affairs openly or covertly. It is actually a model of practice in most Asian nations because of their zeal to develop inwardly and perhaps protect their citizens from dilution and over- competition. It is difficult ( if not impossible in some cases) to become a citizen simply because of your talents, birth, marriage or on humanitarian grounds. This you may say is at contrast with other Western Nations, America and many other nations. In some nations, you can even buy off citizenship. I am not sure of the exact rules in China which has traded more with African nations but they share similar policies on this. Simply, YES we can interact with you as a student or trading partner but we cannot give you a life time citizenship. 4. The Islamic religion moderates the behavior of many Malaysians to the actions of some foreigners in their country. As a majority Muslim country with Islam as the official religion, you cannot expect them to openly welcome cultures that allow for drinking, partying, pre-marital sexual relationship, etc. So, they may tend to draw away from black persons who exhibit these behaviors. Black Muslims on the other hand who shun some of these acts are more welcomed because of the unifying factor of being from the same religion. So, these are just few factors that MAY shape how a Malaysian perceive black persons. But on a more personal level, I have found them to be very peaceful, humble and kind. I have just arrived the country very recently but 3 good episodes are bound to affect my view. First, a random Malay Woman paid for my grocery at a supermarket who I was following at the counter payment. Secondly, today, an unknown lecturer offered me a lift out of his way in his car to the library(Kindness). Three, my supervisor in the course of our conversation stated that she will be the one to learn from me (humillity). In conclusion, black people need to adequately research on some of these factors before travelling. Some are good for studying, some for migration, etc
Why would you want to gain citizenship here? Africans seems to be abandoning their countries to migrate. But in Asia you will never be truly be welcome and its our right to want to not open up to too many foreigners. It will bring too much change. Why not try to improve things in your own country?
Yes, I know this too well. I have 5 children and their partners are from South African, Ethiopian, Ghana, Philippines and Germany. My wife is Swiss and I am a Malay. So, we are all mixed but two of my son in laws from Africa faced racism in Malaysia, obviously due to their skin color. So, yes, we faced that in Malaysia unfortunately. However, they were only a few incidents and not a norm. Furthermore, they have faced that too here in Europe and even in Africa.
