  • In this episode of Mangoes From Around the World series, we’re continuing to learn about the most popular Southeast Asian mango varieties grown in Florida.
    This episode is about Pim Sen Mun mango from Thailand.
    Disclaimer:
    We are creating mango tastings for the 2nd year in a row and feel like sharing the same disclaimer because we still see people arguing about taste. Like many things in life that cannot be ever measured in a lab, taste is one of them. It is purely a subjective experience involving one's cultural conditioning. Exposure to certain types of foods during our childhood days, special liking of other types of fruit or candies and finding hints of them in mangoes play very heavy on the type of mangoes one likes or dislikes.
    Also, the same mango variety grown in different parts of Florida (or the world) will taste different depending on changes in microclimate, annual rainfall, soil health, soil mineral and salt content, fertigation regimen (irrigation+fertilization), etc. so blanket statements about a certain variety's taste aren't welcome. Lastly, mango picked early / not fully mature vs picked at the peak maturity changes how they ripen off of tree; often mangoes picked green, hard & immature eventually change color and look nice but will not get optimal sweetness (brix) or the complexity of flavor that makes mango such a unique and tasty fruit.
    Please don’t make assumptions about a variety based on your tasting of a mediocre tasting fruit! Try fruit from different places, different microclimates at different stages of ripeness.
    We don't think mangoes can be objectively rated from 1 to 10, as many variables play into it, but for the fun of it we have done it in some of our videos.

      They are usually way into first week of August but you really have to watch out for rats and squirrels- they finish them up way before ripeness

    Pim Sen Mun has a longan aftertaste. I always thought that was the resin but a friend said something to me about it tasting like Longan and he was right after I ate this mango I ate a longan and it had that same flavor. I have Brahm Kai Meu if you want to taste it for the 2023 season let me know. It's our favorite mango.

    I would like to know what kind of mango is better for our backyard. Live in Kissimmee. We like fiberless, sweet and we want some mango that will produce within a year or two. I have 3 fruit seed from the seed. Thank you.

      I would suggest you try the popular varieties in the market next season and then buy a grafted tree. Try from tropical acres farm or from Meritt island. Pickering is good, stays compact so you can keep in a large 25g pot and move in during occasional winter freezes. Very productive variety. If you don’t over water during fruit maturation time: mid April to mid May then fruit taste is complex. Another productive variety is Glenn. If you want very sweet, then go for Cotton Candy. Also you can watch all our tasting videos and choose what attracts you.

      @@growpuravida i really appreciate you taking your time to answer me with such details. I am looking forward to get some of the scions from you. How can i do it? I wish to get Cotton Candy, Glenn and Pickering. THank you.

      I normally don't sell scions but there are farms like Tropical Acres Mango farm, Truly Tropical that sell scions. If you come by our garden i will share the scions with you. You can graft successfully until the end of October in Florida. After that wait until end of March to start grafting again.

    Clearly bias against Thai mangos

    • @growpuravida
      @growpuravida  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry if it offended you, but seriously, the Thai mangoes grown in FL don’t get the complexity compared to many top tier mangos grown here now, they likely don’t get the complex flavor as same variety mangos grown in Thailand. My bias is based only on the taste profile.
