Grow Pura Vida! (Tropical Fruit Fanatics)
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 ก.ย. 2015
Grow Pura Vida, previously Osho Bodhisattva Meditation Garden, is a tropical fruit and gardening/farming project that spans from South Florida (10b) to Southern Costa Rica (Perez Zeledon area). We promote organic and biodynamic farming and gardening practices, microbial soil and gut health (they are very similar in nature!), growing your own food, listening to the plants' needs instead of imposing our needs on them, biological pest and weed controls rather than chemical controls, and living in accordance with natural cycles. We do lots of rare fruit tastings and tastings of improved non-GMO varieties of fruits that have outstanding characteristics in comparison with common or commercially grown fruit. We promote and enjoy special, rare flavors and farms with fruit diversity (as opposed to monoculture) and farmers who strive for better taste, not bigger size and volumes. Mango fanatics, we do lots of mango & rare fruit tastings for the channel.

La Fruta Cítrica Más Cara del Mundo: LA MANO DE BUDA.
MUSIC: TH-cam Audio...

This is the recent tasting of the mangoes mentioned above, in my work state of Missouri, and a little rant about unkind commenters. Just remember that you are a guest here, try to behave yourself no one but yourself has to deal with you if you want to harm others, with your words or actions, so you will be sent into a ban. Look in the mirror and smile before attempting to write something nasty....

We had a surprisingly good mango season this year. This is just the current ripening box, but we’ve been enjoying the best intensely flavored organic mangoes for about a month now.

Polyembryonic?
Is Mahachanok something that would ship well?
Yes it doesn’t have very thin skin and will change color in 4-5 days similar to if it hangs on the tree. I have had them shipped to different state from FL and arrived well.
❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉 Epic yard
*Peach Cobbler!*
Me gustaría conseguir semillas de pataste, cuando era niña en m casa había un árbol. Se que tiene un rico sabor.
It looks so easy when you do it, I wish I can do the same
It is! Just try with simpler plants first, the ones that don’t mind barerooting, usually plants that grow easily from cuttings. Once you get a grip, you can move to more delicate ones. Good luck!
you can give me a call?
Hi what is your favorite Indian mango variety?
Thanks for sharing your experience
What other type of oil you can use?
We only had success with tung oil that hardens when dry. No other oil stands against the harsh weather, they just get washed off.
*Do you like Zinc or Super Alphonso best?*
Different flavors, both have more than one dimension of taste, super alphonso is more complex.
@@growpuravida I think what I will do is plant Honey Mango, which we get in the store & is polyembryonic. Then if they can survive our winter, start grafting scions onto them.
*Nymph Jungle Mangoes!*
Can you please tell me what is the color of young shoots that flush mallika tree. I have a tree that flush dark brown shoots and it become green when mature. I want to confirm the tree I have is mallika or something else.
I remember them as dark purple which turn brownish as they grow bigger and then eventually green. The mature leaves of mallika are dark green compared to regular green of most of the Florida varieties
@@growpuravida Thank you so much for the information. I think I have the correct tree. I used to watch your videos for years. Please upload more mango videos.
We have lots of tropical fruit videos coming up; mango season is over so hopefully next year!
Thank yow . excellent.
*Orange Sherbet*
*What about the new Edward Kent Hybrid Mango?*
Haven’t tasted that one. Hopefully next year.
@@growpuravida I just found out that it is Tebow Young mango. Per a different site it's a reasonably good commercial mango, about half the size of Kent, with a mild Edward flavor, nothing spectacular. So I lost interest in it. I would like something like Carrie, which stores well for a long time. Plus tolerates down to 23F. I really want to grow mangoes here but we get about 10 freezes between 25F & 27F per year, with some years down to 23F. What can I grow with spicy complex tropical flavors?
Your best bet is to grow Julie in a big 40 gallon pot that you can bring inside the patio for winter. You can use a potting mix that is lighter and put the pot over a wooden platform with wheels. Julie is one of the best in spicy flavor group and stays dwarf.
@@growpuravida *I was pondering on Graham because far more vigorous & disease resistant. Putting in the ground. Pruning for extra dense canopy. Putting Christmas lights in the canopy. Covering the tree with Mylar blankets, then a tarp. Mylar blankets reflect 90% of the heat back at the tree. It works well for garden plants. Have never done on anything large yet. Your thoughts? Isn't Graham more productive with bigger fruit & similar taste?*
@@growpuravida *Do you know Naveed Afzal of Arizona Mango Growers? He had suggested Super Alphonso, flavorful, dense foliage & disease resistant.*
Where in Florida are u situated
Our garden is in North Miami Beach
that tree is in rough shape, I suspect probably too much rain for it. I find the fruit sweetest if you allow it to fall to the ground before trying. What city in Costa Rica is this? Many thanks for sharing
Hello, Maybe it's also possible to put those raised beds on a small basis of sand or gravel, or just put some root cloth under, or a combination... just to reduce the full soil contact... However, I still think this burning technique gives some interesting results. All the best
The problem with sand here in South Florida is that it breeds root knot nematodes, so we try to avoid it as much as possible. With root cloth - do you mean the plastic one? Not suitable for organic beds since it sends microplastics into the environment, and organic cloth like burlap would decompose in a season. Could be used with gravel or stones, probably, like the Japanese technique of putting houses on foundations of just well compacted stones.
The most elite types of Egyptian mangos are Owais and then Taymoor, we have other types of mangos that are not originally Egyptian mangos like the Alphonse or Kent. But the purely Egyptian elite speices are Owis and Taymoor and are considered the most expensive. Actually, I have tried most of the mangos from different regions and wonder why Taimur and Owais are not as famous as Alphonse mangos.

Egyptian Mango is the best in the world
Yes, i hear that a lot. Are you growing mangos in Egypt?
@@growpuravida I have a large farm in Egypt in Ismailia Governorate which is famous for the highest quality mango and I have high quality mango seedlings if you are interested
I tried grafting in the month of January to March when the buds started swelling but my grafts did not take off. Though the weather in the day time is worm but in the night is quite cold which I suppose is the main cause of failure. Could you let me know the best time of grafting.
Depends, which tree are you referring to? Avocados can be grafted in Jan, Feb, March. Mangos not a good idea because the trees are in flowering/fruiting mode rather than vegetative growth. Other fruit trees differ so it depends. And climate/location also is important subtropics vs temperate climate, please specify which location and what tree you are grafting.
I couldn't find him on the forum, can I have a link?

I'm from the land of a tropical Cambodia, and we Khmers are also accustomed to eating guava at its optimum crispy green but sweet. At Asian specialty markets across the USA, you'd most likely find only the crispy green ones. Unlike folks raised in Western culture, they like their fruits to be mushy soft.
Nice video! Could you do any videos of durians in Spanish? And maybe marang, cempedak, pulasan, tampoi and dabai?
I will see what i can do
@@growpuravida thank you! That would be great. I am in Colombia now and I am able to buy mangosteens at the supermarket so of course I want durians too.
Sure. Please share the videos with your fruit growing friends, we need more tasty fruit in the world!
Great Video!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks a lot for the feedback.
Thank you for the update! In time, will you do one for the tung oil planters as well?😊
We made a cactus stand with tung oil, not raised beds, unfortunately the info came later)) linseed oil doesn’t last even one season. The raised beds in the video are completely protection-free, we didn’t reoil them since the year they were made, so this is what it is with 2 layers of linseed oil at the inception
Was this used with tung oil? Would linseed oil protect the “burnt look” of the wood I wonder 🤔 Thanks for the update
No, linseed oil. Watch the video about making cactus support- we made it with tung oil several years ago, the stands don’t touch the soil but they are constantly exposed to crazy FL sun and rains, and they still look exactly the same as the day they were made!
Videos always make grafting seem very easy, until you try it and discover you have butter fingers.🤣 I think I'll try this soon. Thank you for the video. Is there a reason why this grafting method is more rare?
Yes, there are so many factors why grafts fail despite a good grafting skill. 3 most important ones are wrong season( vigorous rains, dry winds, scorching sun vs cloudy etc.), wrong tree( tree not in good health or good vigor due to disease or poor roots, or scion is from unhealthy tree) and the last one is knife lacking the needed sharpness for a good cut. This particular technique is not rare, but with mangos the easier approach to top-work a tree is to slice it at the level you want, usually 4-5 ft from the ground, make a slant cut so water accumulation doesn’t rot the sliced top and then wait 2 months to get 6-8 new shoots from there to graft onto. Most people use this technique because mango trees are very forgiving to complete slicing/pugging. Where i am, the mountain winds are very crazy and the sun will dry any scion out in a day. So keeping the upper canopy of the tree intact is beneficial for me. However, this method has higher fail rates because the trunk is very thick and often times one will fail to cut deep enough to reach and expose the cambium. I actually bought a very sharp hunting knife for this. The one i am using in video i do not recommend any longer if your trunk is this wide.
From what country are you bro?
Nepal
Thanks for sharing!
Ewesi had down side its too sweet also it need to full rip on the tree to really hit the right taste toon .. And if u think ewsi is sweet wait until u try fas the fas is ewisi mango which after pollination hit by cold wind so the it becomes seedless and all the sugar didn't find thr seed store at the fruit itself its like 2 times sweet than normal ewisi ...i advice u to plant ewisi seed it will take time 3-6 years but it will produce similar fruit "the tree grow so large" Inshallah u are coming next year .. to Egypt to try all different Egyptian Mango and guess what there is around 300 types of mango around 30 are unique to Egypt 😂 By the way ewisi isn't my favorite mango But sidkah if u can find sidkah go for it

zebeda mango is strictly for juicing in Egypt because it is fibrous and cheap, we also have a mango from india called Hindi, it is better than teymour and iwais, our best mango is the alfonse, we got a huge mango with green skin called bull's balls, it has tons of fibrousless juicy tangy meat and small seed, the only mango in the US that might measure up to egyptian mangoes is the hawaiian alfonse
