  • U.S. Marine Corps drill instructors conduct gear inspections with recruits on pick-up day, aboard Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California. Pick-up is the first official training day for recruits, and it is the first day they meet their platoon drill instructors.
The drill instructors are introduced to their recruits and immediately conducted gear inspections to ensure all recruits are prepared for training.

In person it's not that bad, a lot of what they say only sounds garbled because the mics don't pick up what they're saying too clearly is all. In a group all you have to do is watch the others, if they single you out you'll have no problem making out what they're saying. Worse comes to worse, you can always say that you don't understand, but I'd only do that as a very last resort because they will yell at you more for that.

They get much closer than they were in the vids and sometimes will push you up against your rack while they scream at you. The curse at you a fuck ton. They make you call yourself names. If you're too slow you'll have DI's that will dump your footlockers, throw them across the squad bay. Your warbags too. Or they might just take random items you have like your flashlight or stamp kit and just smash them on the ground. When they start being allowed to IT you. During shit like this you can hear screams of other recruits being IT'd for over 45 mins. And much more There's still a lot more shit they. If they showed the real bootcamp a lot less people would be willing to go to become a marine. Ever wonder why you can't find any videos of the recruits at the chowhall? wait till you go to boot, you'll see why!

Senior Hat-The boss or papa more of a father figure...i dont wanna say calmer then the others but you get the jiste...he is responsible for training platoon...most likely the colored man.
Heavy Hat- Responsible for upkeeping procedures...also training recruits most of drill.
Kill Hat- Responsible for teaching recruits knowledge, and does ALOT of discipline of platoon...definatly not all.
Kill Hat is usually the loudest.
And if a fourth...Fourth hat does same as Third or Kill Hat..loud as fuck...teaches knowledge and discipline.

Parris Island is where my son is right now. 2 1/2 weeks in. Got my first letter today. He said he's miserable, lonely but OK. He wrote that everyone is severely depressed, it's literally hell on earth, and that one kid is even on suicide watch. My son is one of the smarter recruits. I was very involved with the process, the research, he spoke to Marines, he read books, he watched documentaries, we had a phenomenal recruiter...blah, blah, blah.. I knew, even with all of his knowledge and training he couldn't comprehend the psychological hell he'd go through. I tried to explain how he'd be stripped of all control, bullied, put down, and physically and mentally pushed to his limit until he was a shell of his former self. I even told him he'll probably think about suicide but it will be fleeting. Do you guys think you made a good decision? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Aaahhhh the newer days of THESE men becoming Marines. It was different back in the 70's & 80's. The Vietnam veterans that became drill Sargents were battle tested tough men, from live combat with scars here and there. Damn they were tough!! DON'T GET caught staring, Oh Damn!! That Crucible was real hell to make it through that. But most of us did it and it made us better men.

He was passionate about why it was important, but explained to me it was a necessary function of war preparation and creative combat preparedness. He was the nicest guy you ever wanted to meet. Left that shit behind after retirement. Which I think is key.

There are no DI's at Camp Pendleton permanently. I could be wrong but we did range, mess & maintenence and field training there during my tour there from 84-86. I apologize if it has changed . I know women are now trained at MCRD San Diego, which is cool.
Personally. I think thry should think about integrating Males and Females at this type of setting. The Army tried it and it was a disaster in the 80's. American women aren't wired to handle this kind of heat right here. This was pretty tamed right here too.
This break women that will never be treated like this in the FMF's. Men & Women are wired totally differently too.
Not disparaging either but we're not the same emotionally or require the same motivations.
      Just the Ole Retirees POV.

I never been there myself, but I'm sure we'd survive, they pride themselves on making Marines. Its not just you, they push you, if you break, then you don't make it. But I knew some of the biggest cream puffs ever, when they came back as Marines, I could not believe my eyes. Not only were they buff and bad assed, but even though they still had the same basic personality, their control and poise was incredible. They impressed me. I wish I had joined when I was young, I think men like this could have helped me be a much better man and maybe I wouldn't have acted so foolish all these years> But I agree, it doesn't look like a walk in the park to me, it looks worse than anything I ever went through, that's for sure.

Wayne Bhase - It sounds like you understand your shortcomings. We all have them. If you understand your shortcomings at this point, you probably have gone a long way to improving yourself already. It is the people who do not understand this who do not improve. Congratulations.

Same here. More years ago then I care to admit. Still have great (and not so great) memories of training at Ft. Benning. I still remember my Drill Sgts names and how dedicated they were. I don't think I will ever forget them. And several of the great guys I trained with. Man, we were like fucking brothers for a while there. US Army training at Benning is one of the greatest memories I have. It's also the funnest thing I never want to do again.

Drill Instructors from hell? In 1981 my drill instructor said, “I miss the rain.” I was in boot camp during the summer. It was hell. He wold turn up the radiator
S and shut the windows. Then PT us until the sweat was dripping off the windows. He was the DI from hell.

I was in PLT 3049, Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD), San Diego, CA. I graduated in October, 1982. We had SSGT Ortiz as the senior (SDI) , SSGT Root and SGT Primer as the junior DI's. I met MSGT Ortiz in 1989 in a chow tent at a cantonment camp in Kuwait. He asked if he ever beat me in boot camp. I replied "a little". He said, "Well, Lieutenant, you did not turn out so bad, did you?" Boot camp was such a crazy environment, you thought you were going to die every day. But then you realize you are only getting stronger and faster, and that at some point you will be a Marine. Proudest moment of my life!!!
