I love that more publishers are embracing the larger page/high paper quality hardbacks. Here's hoping for a YuYu Hakusho edition in English like this someday!
Yu Yu Hakusho does have a Kanzenban release in Japan, so it's possible that Viz could try to bring it over in the future, especially with the netflix Japanese made live action adaptation of the series coming in 2023.
I own the perfect editions and I can already tell you without watching this video: buy the perfect editions (is 100% worth just because of is 10/10 page quality).
But I just finished collecting all the paperbacks 4 months ago..... 😞. I already own the entire series so I don't think I can afford to recollect them.
@@infinitesession5439 Understandable! I feel bad for you because this edition really is the definitive edition. I still don't recommend you re-collecting it because you already have the full set (unless you can sell your manga for good price and buy the perfect edition).

Unfortunately back when I was collecting Soul-Eater a few years ago all that was available was the standard tabokan paperbacks. Same with Hellsing, Berserk, and Blade Of The Immortal. Though I did double dip on the Hellsing Deluxe editions, They are gorgeous!
Yea all those Dark Horse deluxe editions are amazing, but the Hellsing editions definitely stand out the most being bright red, but I love how they all have a different feel, the Hellsing feel more like real leather, the Berserk has a more of a raised snakeskin like feel, then Blade of the Immortal has a waxy feel to it, they’re all beautiful.

Hey thank you!!! I really appreciate it! It's really cool that you work at bookstore! Definitely agree. The Perfect Editions have been easier to collect than the individuals as of late!

Thanks for the tip on the hardcover binding! I’ve read Gundam: the origin manga and they’re all hardcover which I love but never knew of this trick to make the book easier to read. Definitely doing this when I get the soul eater perfect edition. 👌
Ngl think I might prefer paperback. The eggshell look and art work/shading is just a nostalgic to me. I used to go after school to my public library and read soul eater as a kid

A point on pricing: the paper backs are outta print. You’ll be able to find some common printed ones at used bookstores and online for below or at cover price, but a complete set of paper backs will cost about $500-550. The hardcovers therefore are cheaper…not to mention most people are gonna be buying the hardcovers at a discounted right stuf price
May I ask where you are seeing the paperbacks as out of print? I personally have a feeling that they are just temporarily out of stock because sites have them listed as such and haven't unlisted any of their pages. You may know something I don't though or have official word from Yen Press? Right now, a lot of people are hiking up prices on sites like eBay because manga is so out of stock right now with production delays and increase in demand. This was even happening with newer series like Chainsaw Man and what not, so just want to make sure no one is overpaying for Soul Eater paperbacks if they don't have to. That being said, I do agree about Right Stuf and their discounted prices and again, please let me know if you know something I don't about the paperbacks!
I love this manga what drove me to this video is that I love the art on the singles covers especially towards the later singles I hope there in the perfect editions
I know I’m late but I’ve really wanted to collect the soul eater manga since being a fan of the anime. I personally prefer the individual volumes since I prefer the cover art way more than the perfect editions and it’s probably one my favorite cover arts I’ve seen in manga
Hey thanks for the video, I'm french and I wanted to buy the perfect edition but I didn't know the difference between the perfect edition and the paperbacks. So thank you !!
Btw fire force is the prequel of soul eater it has been confirmed on the latest chapter we see maka and her parents telling the story of fire force that happened yearrssss ago etc
Such helpful reviews! Thank you for taking the time to do such a hefty task; it's so appreciated. I feel a lot more secure in making these manga choices with your help! Have a good one.
I’m finally collecting the perfect editions and they’re great. The only thing for me is that I like the original cover art better, but it’s alright. The perfect edition covers look kinda goofy sometimes, especially Kid lmao
Yay, I love Soul Eater! (top 5 manga for me). I own the entire series in the Kanzenban/Perfect Edition format in Japanese and I'd definitely agree that it's the best way to collect the series. Awesome overview video! I agree, the design for both the regulars and the perfect editions look great for different reasons. For the English release of Soul Eater, I do prefer the Yen Press translations though, I also prefer the way they translate the sound effects, as it's less intrusive/more minimalist, that's just my own preference though. As for the Perfect Editions, I also really enjoy how all of the amazing color pages were included, plus as an added bonus the covers for the single volumes are also sprinkled in, which is great because we don't lose out on the phenomenal original cover art. I haven't had the chance to touch or see the English Perfect editions up close, but at first glance I'd say the build quality looks higher than the Japanese Perfect Edition (which I guess makes sense as the price point is different - The Japanese Perfect Editions cost 1200 yen each vs the 20 USD for the hardcover English release). That tip for stretching out the hard covers is great, I've seen it mentioned before by a book collector sometime in the past and it has been helpful for sure. Overall, both releases are a great way to collect the series. I loved the cat in the intro, very cute, and appropriate since it's Soul Eater, with Blaire being a cat character after all :3. I'd love seeing a proper Soul Eater anime reboot, I think it can actually happen with how trendy it is to bring back classics nowadays, so fingers crossed it happens somehow. And now I'll go watch the two anime openings on loop since they're so good and addicting. There are also 2 Soul Eater art books (called 大久保篤 画集 or Soul Eater Soul Art), and they were published in English by Yen Press as well, but they are really expensive in the second hand market unfortunately. Both the Japanese versions and the English versions can cost a lot. From what I've heard the printing quality of the English versions of the art books isn't the best. This is why it's great that the Perfect Editions of the manga come with the majority of the color pages out there, it makes Ookubo Atsushi's fantastic color work more accessible to people.
Interesting thing about the newer translations is they use They/Them for Crona instead of He/Him like the origin translation did due to being more accurate with the fact that we never learn what Crona's gender is, although it isnt super accurate as in Japanese they just call Crona "It" or "That" to highlight how odd Crona is
the SE:PE mangas are SO WORTH IT, they are only a bit more expensive than the paperback ones (but they also have more than one volume in them so..) and they are BEAUTIFUL, shiny paper, revised translations and fonts (afaik) and some colored pages too
Lol I bought and got introduced to Vol 1 of soul eater (perfect edition) when a book I was looking for wasn’t in stock, and now I got absorbed into a new fandom
I started collecting Manga couple months ago and i really fell in love with HC Mangas. Im really glad to see you showing us them in such detail much appreciated. Could you make a Video maybe where u show us all the available HC Mangas (at least the ones you have collected) or perhaps do you have such a video? By the way main reason i got into that was after seeing your Berserk Deluxe and Steins;Gate Videos :D
I watched this video a year ago and couldn’t choose because I like the volume covers of the singles and now a year later I still can’t but I know I should get the perfect edition in the end…
I've been thinking of picking this up. I just got into manga after being a fan of a few anime about 15 years ago. So far ive read Hellsing 1-3 deluxe and Im up to Vol 5 of Berserk Deluxe.
Hey! Thank you so much!!! Awesome to hear that you are thinking about picking them up. The Perfect Editions are a joy to read and I hope you enjoy the series if you get into it!
Hey! I'm just starting to learn Japanese and have a long way to go, but I was talking about the "kui kui" above the katakana on the panel of Death the Kid and the "bomu" on the other panel I showed for translation in the paperbacks. It's a little small to see but from what I understand isn't that romanji? This is what I meant but it may have been unclear since the perfect edition dropped the romanji seen in the paperbacks. Probably could have been more clear!
Great video! Instant sub! You went into a lot of details that would've gone over people's heads, for instance, I just learned about "stretching" hardcover books lol. In your opinion do you think that the soul eater art book 1 will only get more expensive with time cause I love Ohkubo sensei's art and I've been eyeing that
wonder why they cropped it though. kind of a bummer. also shinigami sama is such an iconic name for him i wish they didn't change it :( the perfect editions definitely has it's perks but the original paperbacks have a feeling of nostalgia with the grainy paper texture and slightly janky translations 😂 hard decision.
Soul eater is top 3 or 5 manga I just love that all the characters do something and are important, the plot twist are amazing the art is unique the feel and especially the later arcs I just love them I just wish we got a brother hood of it also it makes me sad that the anime never got those later arcs and especially the ending of the fire force manga I don’t to spoil it but because of it makes me think we might get that brother hood of it.
Undecided which versions I want to collect. The hardcover is a nice option and saving on space is great...but the art for the hardcovers are just so....*ahem* soulless to me (alright mostly bland, not soulless) and I wish they were more stylized or dynamic in what they depicted. I also do not like that the backsides just copy the front's cover image, feels really lazy and uninspiring to me. It's such silly thing to get hung up on, but if they had gone with cover designs like Volume 1, 19, 24 and 25, it be so much easier for me to choose. Im leaning towards the Perfect Edtions a bit more for the rest of the pros that come with em. Page Quality and convenience of space do sway the balance towards em a bit more. I just again wish the Perfect Edtions took the opportunity do more with the front and back cover art
Happy New Year!!! 😄 Awesome that you mentioned No Guns Life! Right Stuf put them on sale not too long ago and I bought all of the volumes that have released so far. I'll probably have them in my upcoming haul and can't wait to read them!
One of the reasons I'm unsure whether to collect the perfect editions or the paperbacks is that I like the covert art of the singles a lot. Since the perfect edition include color art in them, do they include the single cover art as well?
He did mention that Fire Force will be his last manga, which makes me pretty sad since I absolutely adore his works. But at the same time, he's had a long career as a mangaka so it's understandable if he wants to retire from the job, maybe he'll do illustration work for other things. We'll know for sure after Fire Force ends, since he can always change his mind.
if you guys didn’t know already his assistant kei urana who helped with fire force has made a new manga called gachiakuta which currently has 30 chapters out (you can read it on mangadex) but yeah kei urana is pretty much the successor to atsushi ohkubo and you’ll definitely enjoy gachiakuta if you are big fans of fire force/soul eater
@@SaberStash He didn't say he's retiring it's a misunderstanding In one of his interview article, he told that he is all in to this series “as if this is his last work”. It meant that he is putting lots of effort to this series with no regret or whatsoever, but some fans misunderstood that this is his last manga series.
In my country, they stopped the smaller edition at vol 15. Can I ask if I want to buy the bigger version to continue the story of the smaller one, which vol should I buy?
I went to the bookstore with my sister's parents in law and they bought me rent a girlfriend vol9, prison school, happy sugar life, and highschool DXD 4 and I was so happy that she also got me a Barnes and noble membership card and I was so happy and grateful for them and I am going to get new manga with the card. btw can you shout out to me at my birthday in March 4?
Yup, I agree, thankfully with the anime it's had a big increase of fans and sales. It's such a phenomenal dark fantasy battle shonen manga, I'm sure people will learn to appreciate it more as more time passes by.
I have all 4 issues and I have preorder the other 3 so far.... that beign said, I like much much better the cover of the paperbacks Ps. 3:48 I noticed that your issue 1 is also slightly more bright than the other 3. Mine is the same, must be for all, I guess... OCD trigger here :c
I really like the cover art of the paperbacks as well. I didn't notice it until you said something but I just checked mine and you are right. Volume 1 is slightly brighter than the rest. I can't unsee it haha
5:31 i have the paperback version and I had 2 paper pages but it’s in bad condition, does anybody knows if the actual prints in paperback edition includes those pages?
One of the things that I hate about manga is readability and I am glad this has bigger pages and better translation of sounds. Also, this manga is an absolute bargain considering inflation.
@@AnimeCollective definitely , I just made my first order from right stuff & if I would of known about this series I would have thrown in the first volume I love hardcovers
I stretched all 4 volumes carefully, but vol 3 didn’t take it so good and now has a thin crack along the spine. It makes a tiny creaking nose when I open it. Is this bad?
Oh man, I'm not sure. This has never happened to me before and I'm sorry to hear this! Before I stretched mine, I did notice that a few of them were rather creaky even without stretching so may be something about the way they are made. Not sure how the crack could have happened though, especially since you were careful as doing so.
Unfortunately these books actually have glued bindings rather than sewn and so they shouldn’t be stretched like a sewn-bound book. There are pieces of fabric on either end of the binding to give the illusion that it is sewn, but you can see the glue behind it. You can also tell because sewn-bound books aren’t nearly as stiff and you can see the thread in the gutters. If you compare to an actual sewn book you’ll see that the book is composed of many different groupings of pages called signatures. This book doesn’t have that as all the pages were pressed and glued together. This is the same binding-style used on the Fullmetal Editions unfortunately. I really wish they would have gone with actual sewn bindings but it may be a bit unreasonable to expect that level of quality for the asking price.

This is such a well crafted vid ! Keep it up
Hey! Thank you so much!!! I will definitely keep it up!
I love the new perfect editions!
u should do one of these videos with Cutie Honey or Devilman by Go Nagai
I have Hope J.P.Fantastica will realese Perfect edition in Poland
Great video ! And love your cat
Love these videos
Great video like always!
Thank you so much!!! I always appreciate it!
Happy New Year Kristin 😊
Please make a review video of "No Guns Life" manga it is similar to Chainsaw Man.
Happy New Year!!! 😄 Awesome that you mentioned No Guns Life! Right Stuf put them on sale not too long ago and I bought all of the volumes that have released so far. I'll probably have them in my upcoming haul and can't wait to read them!
Fingers crossed for a perfect fire force edition
Probably decades for it since fire force is still fresh plus I bet he will write a manga that’s a prequel to fire force that a prequel to soul eater
One of the reasons I'm unsure whether to collect the perfect editions or the paperbacks is that I like the covert art of the singles a lot. Since the perfect edition include color art in them, do they include the single cover art as well?
Yes, the tankobon covers do show up in the perfect editions
The perfect editions seem like the way to go for me. Fire Force is supposedly close to ending so I wonder if Ohkubo has another project in the works.
@@SaberStash that's too bad. I've been reading Fire Force, but never read Soul Eater. At least I'll have plenty of time to catch up.
if you guys didn’t know already his assistant kei urana who helped with fire force has made a new manga called gachiakuta which currently has 30 chapters out (you can read it on mangadex) but yeah kei urana is pretty much the successor to atsushi ohkubo and you’ll definitely enjoy gachiakuta if you are big fans of fire force/soul eater
@@SaberStash He didn't say he's retiring it's a misunderstanding
In one of his interview article, he told that he is all in to this series “as if this is his last work”.
It meant that he is putting lots of effort to this series with no regret or whatsoever, but some fans misunderstood that this is his last manga series.
@@mafukun No, he made it quite clear that fire force is his last manga
i would LOVE to get the perfect edition but i don’t think i can afford it and there’s no way my parents would EVER get it for me :(
Perfect edition perfect for da maka chop
Love the shirt☺️. Happy New Year also!!!
Thank you so much and Happy New Year!!!
Perfect edition has the wording more similar to the anime it seems
Can’t decide what get first Soul eater, JoJo or Full Metal!
Oh man, that's a tough decision. Can't go wrong with any of these!
Did these editions get cancelled cause I only see paperback solicitations for them on order on Barnes and Noble no HC’s anymore?
I just got volume 2 today 😎
I Have Watched The Anime I Love The Show It Was Very Good And I Have Fire Force Volume 34:Despair or Hope it’s my First Fire Force Manga
Fire force is extremely underrated battle shonen imo.
Yup, I agree, thankfully with the anime it's had a big increase of fans and sales. It's such a phenomenal dark fantasy battle shonen manga, I'm sure people will learn to appreciate it more as more time passes by.
@@SaberStash Yeah totally agree
I have all 4 issues and I have preorder the other 3 so far.... that beign said, I like much much better the cover of the paperbacks
Ps.
If you don't mind me asking, Kristin. How old are you?? And where are you from?? Hope you're well.
WOOOOO I LOVE SOUL EATER
06:15 contrasts are better in the paperback tankōbon volmes imo
One of the things that I hate about manga is readability and I am glad this has bigger pages and better translation of sounds. Also, this manga is an absolute bargain considering inflation.
I think I might have to get both ngl
(Jay RoC) I think I'm gonna have to check this series out
Hey! You'll have to let me know what you think if you do!
@@AnimeCollective definitely , I just made my first order from right stuff & if I would of known about this series I would have thrown in the first volume I love hardcovers
Spine Stretching. 🤯 🤯🤯
Thanks for the tip.☺️
Increíble que las portadas de la Perfect Edition sean tan inferiores a las de los volúmenes regulares.
Kid would be so upset that he isn't on volume 8....
@@AnimeCollective Well, it’s very minor, so it’s not a problem. Just wanted to hear your thoughts about it. Thanks
How many volume the soul eater ( black one? )
17
I think making these only have 1.5 volumes is a waste considering theyre hardcover
Review Monster: perfect edition volumes...
Definitely have this on a list to do! Have to track down the singles first since I'll be comparing the two but it's coming in the near future!
