- I bought every Death Note manga edition: The singles, the Death Note Complete Box Set, the Death Note Black Editions, and the Death Note All-in-One Edition, to compare them all for you guys and find out which one is the best edition(s) for you!

Black Editions for me. I do love an oversized book. This would suit hardcover deluxe editions, like Berserk.

I mean for me, box sets are the best.
I simply wish there was a high quality hard cover release in the design of an actual Death Note. Fans would love it and certainly pay extra with a big smiles on their faces. I know I would.

Right? FullMetal Alchemist recently finished their hardcover 18 volume set and it’s the best release by far.
Black page edges and the all in one edition are such fun little ideas, I wish english regions got more fun stuff like this way more often
They definitely come up with some unique ideas! The black edges are one of my favorite things about those editions. I hope they release something similar in your regions so you can pick them up!

the only problem I've noticed on my black editions, is the black page edges wear and fade so they're not brilliant black anymore :(

@@ChichiNaka well I do read them pretty frequently so I'm assuming that it's just getting smudged from my fingers and rubbing off, other then that I'd think they'd hold well over time, but if you're going to be taking them with you and constantly touching the edges of the page like i have it will fade much faster
In Black Edition 4, it corrects Rule 39 of the Death Note which was mistranslated and said that the Shinigami Eyes grant immunity from the Death Note, while the correct translation is that those who have already died are unaffected by the Shinigami Eyes, meaning that you can’t see their name. This created a plot hole in the individual volumes where Higuchi and Mikami are killed, when that should have been impossible.
So then the black editions are the best to get.

I had the black editions first, but i just love the spines and the cover art on each of the singles. Not to mention the box set comes with the extra volume, so i sold my black editions and went with the box set. You deserve to have way more subs and views the amount of effort that goes into this does not go unappreciated . Great video as always :)

I absolutely love the box set also! Had to have that 13th volume as well, and since it was the only way to get it right now, it was a must-have for me too. Agreed, the spines and cover art look awesome! I went the opposite way haha got box set first and now I want the Black Editions too!

I chose the all in one edition. I love the novelty of owning an entire manga series in a single book. I find the box problem to be solved by putting the book back into the box in reverse, and reading it is best when you have something propping it up. I read on a recliner chair and prop it up with a blanket to make sure that it doesn't get damaged by resting on something harder like a table. I personally really enjoy it despite its flaws like the thinner pages. I honestly just love watching these kinds of manga comparison videos, even if I don't plan on collecting them all.
When putting in the box I close the book with my thumb and index finger put in the bottom side and then the same for the top and it slides in perfectly, I love the all in one too very comfy surprisingly
@@noahsark9962 Yeah, I found that method too by inserting it in through the bottom just a bit and then pulling it ever so slightly out so I can squeeze the top sides in before sliding down smoothly. It isn't too hard once you figure out the best way to re-insert it back in.

Is there a way to read it without creasing the spine?
@@justanormalninja1241 I honestly don't think there is a way to reading it without the book bending in any way. I don't find my spine being damaged when I read it but if that is a big enough concern for you, I would just stick to the normal volumes or black editions.

I have the All-In-One and I would say the only negatives I have for it is that it is really heavy and the pages are delicate so you've got to be careful while turning them. Other than that, I didn't notice any of the cons mentioned as far as the pages being see thru or the artwork being too small. It was a nice way to have it all in one spot. Plus, it was satisfying to finish 2400 pages 😂. If I had to choose all over again, I would say probably the box set but that's because I'm a sucker for color artwork.
Picked up the all in one for cost effectiveness/space issues, and as much as it is nice to have it all in 1, I really hope they re-release an all in one version that is hardcover at the very least at a larger size... makes little sense to have the thickest of the editions remain paperback lol

After casually searching for a Death Note manga set review and landed upon your video, I just had to subscribe to your channel. Live your voice and the effort of in depth analysis on all editions. I’ll get all three editions: the all in, black pages and box set. All in just to carry it for travel even though it’s hard to handle whole reading haha. Thank you so much and keep it up!
I always come to your channel when i am having trouble to choose what edition of a manga i want if you have it posted. I ended up getting all of the black editions for christmas because i have never watched or read death note and since the box set was out of stock and some of the singles were too i decided to just get all of the black editions and i gotta say that they look really nice. I was a little suprised that the colored pages weren't a glossy finish. I also decided to treat myself a little and i got the short stories aswell so i am all done with collecting death note.

this was an extremely well done video. every question i could have had was answered and clearly at that. the only thing i discovered at the very end of the video was that you didnt show the covers of the books of the box set. I agree with your outcome at the end and the extra book is quite the bonus, but i would have gone with the individuals for the sole purpose of the cover art on all of them. if the box set books have the same cover art as the individual books, im set and will immediately purchase that. but if individuals are the only ones with that cover art then i will purchase that instead. this question must be answered :) :edit: i realized after that i could just look up an unboxing on the same website.... ive subscribed and liked, you are a blessing to youtube

I have black edition for Death Note. That simplistic look and black ink paper edges sold me on in. Really gives it a unique look.

If they made the all-in-one the same page size as the Black Edition, it would be my favorite. As they are, my favorite is Black Edition because I like the bigger book size, lower physical volume count, color pages, and mid-range price. I even like the simplified artwork with character portraits on the outside of each volume. My second choice would probably be all-in-one for portability. My favorite covers are the individual volumes. Picked up Short Stories recently but haven't read it yet. Glad to hear it includes the bonus chapter from the all-in-one. Great video!!

I personally really like the singles, (and by extension the box set) since I can't get enough of Obata's art. I also have the all in one edition and the short stories, but I don't touch the all in one edition at all really. The character profiles in the how to read book included in the boxset are amazing though. I don't think I'll buy the black edition though, pretty expensive for each volume lol

I already have the individuals (Brazilian Ed.) and I was looking for another version to keep like a brand new on my shelves. But for me, the Black Edition is almost the same, but with bad covers. Then I recently got the All in one (English Ed.). It's very beautiful and has a great design to be shown.
Thanks for this, I’m still stuck on whether I should get the all-in-one or the boxset because of the price but this still helps narrow down the four choices 😅

Im stuck on the Black Edition or Box set as the black edition has a larger format and similarly prices (at least here in australia), whereas, the box set has an extra volume but average sized manga format. hmmm. Also, since the Black Edition is matt, it's more prone to defects over time but it's larger in size. haha this is too hard to decide.
Of course and thank you so much!!! It really is haha there's pros to each so it is difficult to pick between the two. Those are the two I found myself going back and forth on as well. Ended up deciding to get both 😅
i have the black editions. larger format, some coloured pages, 2 in 1, they have the single covers in the back (although in black and white), although the cover can mark up and the pages can discolour too

Just wanted to mention that the 13th volume is not exclusive to the box set. I got the series in the black edition and bought the 13th volume on its own.

Love these reviews, I also love the black editions. My wife actually chose this as her first manga to read. I was stoked as Death Note is definitely in my top choices and am looking forward to reading the black editions as I haven't read the manga, but the anime is definitely one of my favorites.

is the paper quality between black editions and box set big difference? Because i want to go with the og covers but im afraid the difference will be pretty noticable. Also all in one edition doesnt appeal to me at all. Great review and im happy i discovered this channel. Better late than never i guess!

So far I have 3 of the Black Editions Vol’s 1-3, I plan on finishing the Black Edition set very soon. I really really really like the Black Edition compared to all of the other ones. Looks the best, but also faces the flaws you said in the video with cropping issues, and speech bubble text placement issues. Ultimately it’s cheaper, only 6 volumes, and is the best size to read Death Note in. I also purchased the death note short stories book to basically have my own complete set of the Death Note manga.

Black edition all the way, really cool channel! As someone who rather has 1 deluxe edition than a few single volumes of a manga, this video gives me a good overview of what is more suitable for me. And you even give insights of the panel quality etc., great stuff !

What a great in depth comparison video! Death Note is an all time classic, so I'm happy to see you cover it!
I actually literally bought all 12 of the volumes from the manga this month in Japanese, their design is basically the same as the regular singles in English, they look super nice!
Here's a video idea/suggestion, I've noticed people mention that some publishers from NA are basically printing/reprinting their manga in countries outside of Canada or the USA, in order to keep up with the super high demand. This has led to weird inconsistencies across the board, since printing in different countries will obviously change a lot in the entire process. I've seen people complain about new viz reprints for a lot of their super hot properties, people are saying that the covers are more stiff, the page and print ink quality is different and the volumes are slightly smaller, these volumes seem to be printed in Italy (examples are new reprint batches for Chainsaw Man(volumes 1,2), Jujutsu Kaisen (volumes 0-3), Haikyu volume 1, Demon Slayer volume( 2 and 5), Spy x Family vol 1, those are some of the examples I could find online, there are probably way more). Seven Seas are using a printing company in Hong Kong for some stuff(only examples I've seen are Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs volume 12 and Fire at his Fingertips volume 2, apparently the paper is super white in these and the volumes are stiff). I've also seen people mention Yen Press are printing stuff in South Korea, with Toilet Bound Hanako Kun. We have talked briefly before about Dark Horse and how they seem to print their hard covers in China, but that's probably always been the case for them and Viz I think also prints their hard cover art books in China, so there's that.
I just thought it would be an interesting video topic for people who collect stuff in English and it fits well with what you do on your channel. ^.^

Ah yes, the quality differences. This is a video idea I had in the works and something I was thinking about adding into my manga collecting video. But an individual video for it may be better since there are some differences I've noticed. Specifically, Noragami as of late. The new volume 1's have glossy covers while the older ones have matte covers and the pages were quite different too (much thinner). So this is something I can definitely touch on and have noticed! I have the recently printed Jujutsu Kaisen volumes. Maybe I can stumble on an older printing at HPB one day to compare those also as you mentioned due to the print quality. This was all very helpful and insightful! I have noticed publishers printing in different locations. There is a shortage in printers too due to the increase in demand and the presses are running a lot faster, so there are more quality issues in addition to those with the print quality as of late.
Yes definitely an interesting topic for sure and one I have in the works!! Having to track down some of those older volumes for newer series, but I'm interested in seeing if any of my recently printed box sets vary as well. I really appreciate you as always! You had a lot more insight into the different volumes and ones I need to look into comparing! 😄

I'm getting The Black Edition. I've learned with the few Omnibuses I own that ALL In One's are a huge pain in the ass to read. Plus I love the black pages and minimalist art style of the covers. Death Note and Monster will soon be added to My collection which at the moment is only Yu Yu Hakusho and Black Lagoon.

I went for the Black Editions, but also ended up getting the Short Stories, Vol 13 and LA BB cases books separately. I wish they’d put together a final Black Edition that captures all of that extra content!
Both singles and black edition are my favs! I’m right there with you! There are small perks to both but they are both awesome, I love owning both!

I read the series through a combination of the Black edition and the singulars (they were just the ones my local Library had, add alternate between the two since they didn't have all the volumes in one set) so I was wondering how they fit the whole series in the one big version since it looks to be a bit bigger than one of the black additions. Just seems impractical as something to actually read and more like a collector's item to display on your shelf

I would've loved getting the box set but due to the prices I was able to get the all in one edition which I don't mind at all. I liked that I could keep reading and don't have to get up to grab another volume.

It is not only fun to read manga, but also to display , and I noticed individual edition is much cooler to display than black edition . This is only my opinion . The side corner looks much cooler design and colors with different pictures .

i believe for a collector the box is the better choice, because its beautifull to see your shelf full!

I’m like you, I’m stuck between the black editions and boxset. I’m trying to decide between the two. When I skim through it at the bookstore the black pages makes it pop more. It also goes with the death note theme. Although I want the boxset to match my DB & DBZ boxset. Plus you pretty much won me over with the extras from the boxset.
