    Every nervous flyer should be watching these videos. I know it's disconcerting being in a small metal tube thousands of feet in the air with absolutely no control over your destiny but these guys really know what they are doing. The amount of planning and monitoring on even the shortest flight is staggering. Flight crews like this are a credit to their profession.

      I have great faith in pilots but far, far less faith in the beancounters who always want to cut corners. I avoid flying for many reasons but it always plays on my mind that some accountant somewhere has cut the budget for maintenance, or training etc.

    Another great video from you. Mallorca has been my favourite island since I was a kid. First time I went there, was in the 80s in a Caravelle SE210, later it was in the B727, DC8-63 and a DC10. Hello Cpt.
    Another beautiful video and a nice ILS approach. 🛬👌
    The change from VOR approach to ILS approach was very exciting. 👍
    What I really liked was the display of the CDU data.
    Of course, the timely display of the charts was also great.
    I have to say again and again, the calm you radiate is great.
    If I may ask, how long have you been flying?
    The videos with the 6 cameras are great for me. 🤩
    And the simulator pilots, like me, are grateful that you give us a very deep and exciting insight into your work.

      Vielen Dank fürs Anschauen und das hilfreiche Feedback! Was den Funk betrifft, ist es tatsächlich schwierig, es immer gut passend im Video hinzubekommen. Das hat damit zu tun, dass es nur eine Tonspur für die Kommunikation gibt. Das Lautstärkeverhältnis zwischen Funk und der Kommunikation zwischen uns im Cockpit lässt sich im Nachhinein nicht ändern. Hauptziel ist es immer, eine Übersteuerung zu verhindern und trotzdem sowohl die Kommunikation mit ATC als auch im Cockpit laut genug wiederzugeben.

    I hear ATC giving an ILS option for 26L, not 06L, around @20:08. Of course that doesn't make sense, or is either my bad hearing, or a mistake no one seemed to notice... I think I hear ATC saying the localizer is now "service full", and the reason why you, during arrival, were planning a VOR approach, as the ILS was temporarily out of service, correct? And thanks again for yet another Saturday treat. Love it.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ILS was per Notam (Notices to air missions) not useable until after our landing. I think this was due to maintenance work at the ILS. ATC and the initial ATIS told us that we have to expect the VOR approach for 06L. We prepared the approach accordingly. The ILS was back in working codition earlier than expected. So ATC offered us the ILS, which we highly appreciated. I just heard again the audio. It is a little difficult to understand at 20:08 But there is no 26L. Also the wind was only allowing approaches in that direction and all the traffic was directed to 06L. The approach clearance at 22:46 was easy to understand and without any doubt for the ILS Z runway 06L.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are 2 different white markings visible. The first, which you see before we start the descent, shows the precalculated top of descent. The second white marking, which showed up after we started the descent, shows the point at which we intercept the precalculated idle descent path. The second marking showed up because we started the descent a moment prior reaching the top of descent.

    What an awesome Captain! I love the part at the end where you talk about the landing.. what did happen and what could have happened. That's a great learning experience! Your FOs must love you!
    One question.. you didn't do a callback on the turn to 310°, the two of you verified it with each other. I listened to it several times and it sounds like they said 330°, not 310°. They gave you another turn right as you got to 330°..

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching, the kind words and your feedback! We got the instruction to turn right heading 330 at 21:33. The readback was in accordance. And we set the heading to 330 (for a base leg). After a while, we got another vector for the final intercept. Our crew confirmation at about the same time was for the new minimum for the (changed) approach. This was 310 feet. The "heading" call was just an FMA call. I called heading because I pulled the heading knob after NAV blue appeared on the FMA due to the sequencing of the new approach. It may sound a little confusing for an observer. But we did everything in accordance to ATC instructions. The late confirmation of the minimum was done due to the last minute change of the approach from VOR to ILS.

The cabin ready on the mentioned displays is activated when the purser pushes the cabin ready button in the forward galley.

    Captain - When the FO mentoned the 20-min fuel reserve does that take into consideration the time it takes to fly to your alternate? In that case can you comfortably hold longer than 20 minutes near LEPA or do you have to divert once the 20 minutes are up? - Thanks a ton for another mouth watering video - Kam

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Kam, thanks for watching and the kind words. The mentioned 20 minutes extra fuel is on top of the fuel to fly to the destination runway plus the fuel to the alternate plus 30 minutes holding. If we would have diverted after the approach, we would have landed with 30 minutes holding plus the 20 minutes extra fuel. Legally, we have to land with 30 minutes of fuel in the tanks. If it would be lower, we would have to declare a fuel emergency. Holding longer than 20 minutes at Mallorca airport would have been possible, but this would have eliminated the alternate airport. The only requirement then would have been to land at LEPA with 30 minutes of fuel in the tanks.
      If the weather is fine, without ice, snow or thunderstorms, it may sometimes be better to use some of the alternate fuel and stay at the destination. Especially if the destination has 2 or more separate runways. In bad weather situations, the 2 runways won’t help and an early diversion would be a wise idea. We plan for all that during our flight preparation. If we expect bad weather or closed runways, we take more extra fuel than on days with good weather.
      Have a nice day!

    Fantastic footage. For same reason LEPA Ground was rather implicit with her taxi instructions. No "vacate via N3, turn left North, North 11, Link 1, F, LG " and so on. I noticed that you parked on stand 42. I mean it was empty so no harm done. Didn't she give you stand 40? F/O also said stand 40 during readback.

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! At 28:54 we got the clearance from ATC to turn left and to taxi via Foxtrott and Victor 2 to stand 42. This is what we did. Taxiing to a wrong parking position would not harm anybody. But the ground crew would be at the other parking position and the passenger gate would need to be changed, including the crew for the gate would need to move. So taxiing to a wrong position would make some trouble. If you watch us taxiing into the stand, you see that at stand 40 is no ground crew. Also the guide-in-system at stand 40 would have been switched to off. In general, the taxi instruction here was very easy and she made it not too complicated. "vacate via N3, turn left North, North 11, Link 1, F, LG" would be way too complicated for the same message.

    Before you were handed off to tower you were instructed to keep speed at 160 knots. Then when tower told you to expect a late landing clearance you changed the speed to even slower. Can you do this without additional clearance?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was not specified until when the 160 kts should be flown. As we cannot land with 160 kts, we had to reduce the speed for landing to be stabilized at 1000 feet above the airport elevation. If ATC wants us to maintain a certain speed until 4 miles or so, they usually tell us. Most of the times we tell ATC that we start reducing speed. Here ATC told us that they have an additional departure and we have to expect a late landing clearance. To avoid a go around, we continued our speed reduction after this information.

    More questions / stuff to learn :) Right around touchdown at @28:20: The NEG on altimeterstrip on PFD is new to me, is that caused by a slight inaccurate QNH given by ATC? Is that the reason for the master caution / alarm going off briefly, or is that from a small bump / reversers out ever so early, or?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  ปีที่แล้ว

      One hpa pressure change means 30 feet altitude change on the altimeter. If an airport has an elevation very close to zero, it may happen that it shows a few feet below zero even with the correct altimeter setting. One hpa more would show 30 feet more. Thats the lowest possible increment. Also, the QNH sometimes changes fast. ATC updates on it may take a moment.
