Another great Saturday video from Katie! One thing I really appreciate is you making videos like this for beginners who want to try transforming dated furniture but are intimidated by the skill level involved, or can't afford expensive equipment like sprayers. You keep it simple, talk us through each step, show the affordable products you use that are easily accessible, and encourage us to say, "Yes, I can do this." There's a lot of laminate furniture like this out there that needs updating, and hopefully your videos will inspire more people to try and save these pieces from the trash.
So glad you called this Painting 101 so beginners find it. You did an excellent job explaining the details and the desk has a whole new life ahead of it!
Katie, I’ve been watching you for several years now. I’ve Learned quite lot. I like that you reiterate your methods in every video. And, I especially love your thrifting, and large item trash day videos! Thanks for adding your reasoning for accepting/rejecting items. You are cheerful, creative, and adorable!😊 Greetings from southwest Virginia. Amy
Katie thanks for going back to the basics again. Not having your level of expertise It’s all too easy to forget those things when I think I’m ready to tackle a bigger challenge
Your timing could not have been more perfect; I have a couple of laminate topped end tables I was fretting over since I don’t have a sprayer. Thank you for another great tutorial! 🙏
Fabulous. I still love watching back to the basics from you. You have such great ideas. Even though I’ve painted for years, you are just amazing and always make it look so easy. Yet you’re encouraging and make us all feel hopeful and like “I can do this!” You are such a great teacher! Thanks for another great flip. The Blue is perfect for this desk. Hope to see you again soon!
This is perfect instruction and timing. After several years of watching yours and a couple of other channels, I'm going to give my dining table a little/big makeover. It's old and real wood, but not valuable except to me. Thanks for giving the simple instructions. 😊
I love the brass thumbs-up! The handles look really good with the blue paint that you chose. Thanks for a great video on the basic AND necessary refinishing skills!
This just in time for my next project: painting several laminate kitchen cabinets from different sources (Ikea and HD) the same dark color. You answered ALL of my questions and have given me the confidence to attempt painting these with a durable finish, thanks!
Nice save for a piece otherwise considered disposable! I like the color and the handles are cute! Glad you put them back on! Great desk for a young person to do homework on or a college student to study upon!
This is such a cool makeover. Love the color and the hardware is perfect. You are such an awesome teacher and I just love everytime you post a new video.
Very nice! That would be great for a kid’s room. In mini painting, the first coat is called The Ugly Stage. I think of it as the awkward early-teen stage that everyone wants to forget.
Gorgeous result - looks nautical with that luscious navy & brass. I think of a desk like this as left-handed: knee hole on right, drawers on left. Most one-drawer-stack-desks have the reverse, it seems.
OMGOSH!!!!! I’ve been trying to figure out my 1980’s guest bedroom set. I bought all of these expensive types of paints that say they cover laminate……but……not really! I only have the dresser top painted in a grey (that I don’t care for but it didn’t come in many colors). You’ve restored my hope! Heading to home depot tomorrow! I’m even going to use your color! My only drawback is that I HAVE to paint it in the room because my husband and I can’t move it all the way down the stairs and across the house to the garage. I walk with a cane so I am totally useless….but I will succeed since you showed me the way 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for the painting demonstration. It wasn't as intimidating as I thought it would be. It will just take some time. My Ikea bedroom furniture has held up well for 16 years, but I am so tired of white furniture. I love the navy color you chose. I have more courage now to give my furniture an update. Thank you.
Not much snow there either, boy we are getting a real break from storms the last couple of years, and well I can’t say I’m complaining, thanks as always for your cool, amazing work, and have been following for quite some time too
So glad I found this video today. I am currently painting a laminate murphy bed and the paint my client chose is Behr Enamel paint. I've been having some issues with brush strokes so I'll try the 400 grit sanding and apply another coat. Thank you, for sharing your knowledge with us!
Absolutely love your videos! This desk turned out amazing ❤ About 2 years ago I bought 2 IKEA Malm drawers on fb marketplace with the intention of giving them a makeover following your advice. I’ve been putting this off but now, this video gave me the push and the motivation I needed! It really doesn’t look too hard, I think I can do it 😊
Thanks for the back to basics. I only paint my exterior doors but keep watching and thinking I’d like to try an interior project. Too cold in my garage now but great to see what items to use and I’ll file this away for warmer days.
Katie, I really enjoyed this ,'back to the basics' video. Like all your videos, very informative and encouraging. Gives me confidence to start a project of my own shortly. Thank you!
Thanks for the great lesson, Katie! You’re a wonderful teacher! Love the hint about the roller brush because sometimes my paint can really look blotchy… I always thought it was the type of paint! But I’ll certainly try this next time! Beautiful peace!
Very timely! Thank you! 👍 I'm getting ready to tackle an extremely shiny, heavy, large lighted china cabinet that I'm repurposing for my doll/hobby space. I've had great trepidation over the prep work.
Looks so elegant with the long legs and I love how you painted the inside and outside of the drawers, the colour looks so rich ❤ thank you for the tips..
Hearty Snowy Greetings from Owen Sound, Ontario Katie! This little piece turned out beautifully with your skillful touch! I always look forward to Saturdays so I can see what new projects you have for us to enjoy watching and learning from. Thanks thanks thanks! :-) MQH
Oh my goodness, painting the drawer boxes inside and out will add years to the life of this piece. Pretty little desk now!! Nice job.
Katie, the instructions are so good. You are a natural teacher. Thanks for showing us how to make these pieces valuable again.

I like that, too.
I have followed your journey for ages. You're my favourite flipper. Thanks for being consistently fabulous
Wow! I can't believe you took that cheap, nothing of a desk and made it look really good. Great job!
Thanks! Sometimes the most simple of pieces can turn into something special.
I love the way you take time to teach us newbies how to do this without all the fancy tables. Thank you! It came out beautiful.
I try to keep it simple, so anyone can follow along!
So glad you called this Painting 101 so beginners find it. You did an excellent job explaining the details and the desk has a whole new life ahead of it!
Like others have said,it’s so darn relaxing watching you, thanks😊

The desk looks great, and so do you. You are slimming down so much. Good for you Katie
Love the color inside the drawers as well. This little guy looks great now!!
Nice review of basic techniques! I always love the deep blues with gold handles, it makes the piece look very upscale.💖💖💖💖
Katie thanks for going back to the basics again. Not having your level of expertise It’s all too easy to forget those things when I think I’m ready to tackle a bigger challenge
I'm glad you kept the handles, they are beautiful, the peice itself is adorable. I love the blue you picked.
Katie, your videos are so calming while educational. You have great design sense too!Really gets me excited to paint!!
Your timing could not have been more perfect; I have a couple of laminate topped end tables I was fretting over since I don’t have a sprayer. Thank you for another great tutorial! 🙏
I’m so glad it helped! You don’t need a sprayer for beautiful results 😊

That third coat, wow, that really seemed to bring it up another level.
That paint- the type and color, was what I used for my kitchen cabinets at my last place. It's a fantastic paint.
This is perfect instruction and timing. After several years of watching yours and a couple of other channels, I'm going to give my dining table a little/big makeover. It's old and real wood, but not valuable except to me.
Thanks for giving the simple instructions. 😊
You’re going to have so much fun!
I love the brass thumbs-up! The handles look really good with the blue paint that you chose. Thanks for a great video on the basic AND necessary refinishing skills!
Thanks Katie, it was fascinating watching the blue look a different colour as the sunlight played on it. ❤
This just in time for my next project: painting several laminate kitchen cabinets from different sources (Ikea and HD) the same dark color. You answered ALL of my questions and have given me the confidence to attempt painting these with a durable finish, thanks!
That color was perfect for the style of desk and the hardware. Great job!
You are the best furniture flipper. I'm going to paint my laminate cabinets. This was very helpful
Wow, what a great transformation. not only the desk, you also look great!🤩
How weird to have exposed particle board in the drawers! Never seen that before. You do make it look simple. This piece looks great!
Great refresher content and I appreciated the HD visit item closeups. Thanks, Katie!
Nice save for a piece otherwise considered disposable! I like the color and the handles are cute! Glad you put them back on! Great desk for a young person to do homework on or a college student to study upon!
Looks great now! What a transformation! ~ Cassandra
Amazing as always. I’ll never get bored of these videos.
I’m glad you’re enjoying them!
That desk looks amazing! I love how the hardware turned out too. At first I didn’t think much of them until you got rid of the tarnish and 👌🏼
So pretty. It will find a new home quickly. Love that you brought your work back to basics.
I really enjoyed this video, great example of a solid design just needing an updated color.
This is such a cool makeover. Love the color and the hardware is perfect. You are such an awesome teacher and I just love everytime you post a new video.
Love it 🥰. The legs centralised to the drawers gives it some unique character. The deep blue colour has given her new life 😊. Bravo Katie.
Good reminder that it always looks terrible after the first coat! Love the finished look!
Very nice! That would be great for a kid’s room. In mini painting, the first coat is called The Ugly Stage. I think of it as the awkward early-teen stage that everyone wants to forget.
That turned out so sweet! It's an awesome accessory for a corner that needs some "jujing". (If you know, you know) ❤
Amazing what a can of paint can do looks beautiful and the handles are perfect. Always like your staging too.
Great job Katie! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏💕💕
Cute! Don’t like blue, but the desk looks so much better!!
Katie, you explain the process so well. And the result on this little piece looks so good!
Thank you for explaining every step...It's such a beautiful piece ..you are so talented Katie🥰
Gorgeous result - looks nautical with that luscious navy & brass.
I think of a desk like this as left-handed: knee hole on right, drawers on left. Most one-drawer-stack-desks have the reverse, it seems.
Just what i needed for exactly this kind of material on bookshelves. Thank you.
Love those handles!! Beautiful against the blue paint!
