The real reason I feel like L has always been my favorite character was because I have always felt that the only reason he lost to Light was because he had taken the risk of thinking Light would perhaps abandon his Kira identity in the end. He did not know how would that happen, but as soon as he came to a point where he felt sympathy towards Light, he was no longer able to win with Kira. In a sense, his emotions got the best of him. Although they both were absolutely two cunning masterminds, Light has never really come even close to surpassing Lawliet in my opinion. He just took the opportunity of L's urge to have a friend in Light. He killed the most genuine detective in the world and did not even show any sign of regret for having done so. How would YOU feel if the smartest person in the world told you "I think you are the only friend I've ever had"? What would be the price of his life to you? I think this was the greatest turning point in the series; Light no longer was fighting in the name of justice. He just fought for his right to maintain his godlike status and I honestly cannot even think how fair and just would be the rule of a man who favors hollow ideas over friends and emotions. Thats not really un common. i,v met a few people that insist that their first name is 1 or 2 letters. After L died in the, series Kira got cocky and had pride driven over just like of Cell and he later on dies due to that the series would have been great with L. And I really hate the fact that L is underestimated due to Near but in my opinion he is one of the smartest Anime Character.
Well Near states at end that it took two of them, Himself and Mello, to equal and surpass L. Thus, even Near admits he alone was not as good as L, he needed Mello's help. Again though, like I stated in another post, it is Wisdom and experience, not Intelligence that's best for people.

I think the simple fact is that L and Light were equals, there was no way L could possibly beat Light but given Light had mystical powers on his side, he would eventually win out, it was inevitable. L left Near in a position where he could pick up and finish the investigation, without L he would have been just as stuck as L was. I also like to switch Light’s and L’s roles, if L were the Kira, Light would never get close to catching him, Light’s ego screwed him over a few times.

Still, there were hints that he had some slight feelings for Misa Amane in the least. I'm also pretty sure that there was an episode where he saw a very sensual commercial and demonstrated a certain level of arousal because he was tugging on his shirt with his teeth or something, maybe eating food in a bizarre way (I can't remember exactly what happened because it's been a while since I saw the series). Aparrently 'Ooba Tsugumi' is actually two people. One of them was amazing at drawing but couldn't write good stories, and the other person was the opposite so they started working together. 'Ooba Tsugumi' can be read as 'Oobatsu gumi' which means 'Big cross team' in Japanese. This means before they started working together, any work they submitted was returned with a big cross which basically meant it was rubbish. I find this so cool.
I am a junior in high school (currently) and I look at my peers, and ask them, what do you want to be when you grow up? Some know the answer, others are unsure, and some don't know at all. For me, I've always wanted to help people, somehow, someway; but I could never decide on what I wanted to do, I was always going back and forth between choices. However, after encountering this amazing anime, I know what I want to be now. That is, either a detective or a private investigator (same thing, sort of). Recently I've put my mind to such critical thinking like L, and I've been surprised to learn how smart my thinking can get. Thank you L, N, M, and Matt. The only reason L couldn’t beat Light is because Light was working with supernatural forces, which L couldn’t understand because they were illogical. So I’m the end L was the better foe, but he was at a disadvantage beyond human understanding. PERIOD
Also, Light had a massive advantage early on. L had the much harder task of uncover everything bit by bit while also having to form plans with incomplete information (look at the fake execution L set up to test if Light was Kira). Meanwhile Light made plans while knowing all the details. It's amazing L got as far as he did. If he had only know Rem's motivations he might of even won.
I have read Death Note Another Note: The Last Angeles BB Murder Cases, it is so amazingly good, it adds so much to the story of Death Note. I highly recommend it.

I really love that in Another Note, they keep the mystery of L's _real_ name. By making L the initial of a supposed first name that the audience never sees. As in, L. Lawliet. With Mello commenting how L had many _names_ , yet he never thought of them as his identity. Including _L_ , the initial itself. It was simply more popular with the people he was working with and therefore easy to use. Yet it never had any special meaning to him as an individual. It became so well-known that it was quite possible it became him, so to speak. Even to the point where it was acceptable to use in his murder. Hinting that in reality, L's real name was never known at all. A mystery that followed him to the grave. Some even speculate (Mello included) if L was even born with a proper name at all. Love how Another Note went about leaving his identity as an enigma. Turning the visual reveal of L Lawliet into L. Lawliet, that way it respects the canon reveal in How to Read but also contrasts to Nisio Isin's idea of respecting L's reputation of an _unknown_ identification. Smart move in narrative.
2:35 there’s actually a reason behind this, something to do with the fact that ‘the life he leads is so bitter, every bite he takes has to be sweet.’ In the anime, possibly the manga (I didn’t read the manga) he also states that the brain uses up the most calories in his body, and that’s how he didn’t get fat while eating so many sweets, although I don’t really believe that’s scientific lol.

I don't get that impression 100%. Sure, he's very awkward and hides away from the world, and is definitely more intellectual than warm.
Still, there were hints that he had some slight feelings for Misa Amane in the least.
I'm also pretty sure that there was an episode where he saw a very sensual commercial and demonstrated a certain level of arousal because he was tugging on his shirt with his teeth or something, maybe eating food in a bizarre way (I can't remember exactly what happened because it's been a while since I saw the series).
Regardless, I know he reacted in a way that he was turned on, before his colleges called him out on the provocative behavior.

As far I remeber, actually, the creators didn't said they couldn't see L having sex, but that L having a fixed relationship with someone was hard to believe, as Mello and Near was supposed to be his children, so unless he was a pimp and had a son of different women, L probably had a partner, and the authors couldn't imagine him attached emotionally to someone.
Also, the Misa stuff and L saying that Light was his only friend was just acting on L's part. L despised Light and Misa. The author said it on how to read 13.

He was the smartest because he planned ahead and had a greater plan that even Light could not have foreseen; could not have predicted because I doubt he considered it to be possible.

Aparrently 'Ooba Tsugumi' is actually two people. One of them was amazing at drawing but couldn't write good stories, and the other person was the opposite so they started working together.
'Ooba Tsugumi' can be read as 'Oobatsu gumi' which means 'Big cross team' in Japanese. This means before they started working together, any work they submitted was returned with a big cross which basically meant it was rubbish. I find this so cool.

Some know the answer, others are unsure, and some don't know at all.
For me, I've always wanted to help people, somehow, someway; but I could never decide on what I wanted to do, I was always going back and forth between choices. However, after encountering this amazing anime, I know what I want to be now.
That is, either a detective or a private investigator (same thing, sort of). Recently I've put my mind to such critical thinking like L, and I've been surprised to learn how smart my thinking can get.

The only reason L couldn’t beat Light is because Light was working with supernatural forces, which L couldn’t understand because they were illogical. So I’m the end L was the better foe, but he was at a disadvantage beyond human understanding. PERIOD
Also, Light had a massive advantage early on. L had the much harder task of uncover everything bit by bit while also having to form plans with incomplete information (look at the fake execution L set up to test if Light was Kira). Meanwhile Light made plans while knowing all the details. It's amazing L got as far as he did. If he had only know Rem's motivations he might of even won.
I have read Death Note Another Note: The Last Angeles BB Murder Cases, it is so amazingly good, it adds so much to the story of Death Note. I highly recommend it.

I really love that in Another Note, they keep the mystery of L's _real_ name. By making L the initial of a supposed first name that the audience never sees. As in, L. Lawliet. With Mello commenting how L had many _names_ , yet he never thought of them as his identity. Including _L_ , the initial itself. It was simply more popular with the people he was working with and therefore easy to use. Yet it never had any special meaning to him as an individual. It became so well-known that it was quite possible it became him, so to speak. Even to the point where it was acceptable to use in his murder.
Hinting that in reality, L's real name was never known at all. A mystery that followed him to the grave. Some even speculate (Mello included) if L was even born with a proper name at all.
Love how Another Note went about leaving his identity as an enigma. Turning the visual reveal of L Lawliet into L. Lawliet, that way it respects the canon reveal in How to Read but also contrasts to Nisio Isin's idea of respecting L's reputation of an _unknown_ identification. Smart move in narrative.

there’s actually a reason behind this, something to do with the fact that ‘the life he leads is so bitter, every bite he takes has to be sweet.’ In the anime, possibly the manga (I didn’t read the manga) he also states that the brain uses up the most calories in his body, and that’s how he didn’t get fat while eating so many sweets, although I don’t really believe that’s scientific lol.
