Although it's been over ten years since he left us behind, we all still miss our lovable but incomprehensible defender of justice, L. He was the only one who might solve the greatest mystery of our age. This is truly a character who will survive the test of time.

I seriously love L. His brilliance was astounding.
As far as being friends go I think the series makes it abundantly clear that L and Light could never be friends because they enjoy being enemies. They only value each other because they see themselves as each others only true intellectual equals. As L goes through his various monologues over the series he speaks rather respectfully of the "real" Kira as a criminal. He notes that the other people using Kira's mantle are all often "stupid" or that he "doesn't like the way they work" while noting how the actual Kira would've approached the issue differently. When Light confronts Near at the end of the series he elevates L snarling with blood lust that the child before him is "FAR inferior to L" and how L would've immediately sniffed out his fake Notebook plot. I think many people consider them friends only because the manga so quietly subverts the antagonist and protagonist being "opposites" when in truth to quote the wisecrack video the pair are "Parallels. More similar than they are different." And because of that the 2 might always have been destined to clash.
I could see them being rivals and maybe one of a friendly nature. Like those friends that always want to destroy each other in whatever competition.
also to add to both theories, when Light loses memories, L is upset that Light seemingly isn't Kira and I don't think it's just that he can't stand to be wrong, honestly I think that would make a pretty lousy detective especially where leads on uncertain and Light is just a prime suspect rather than a confirmed culprit. It could be that starting over is rather aggravating but I think the real reason is that he wants Light to be Kira because of all the Kiras only Light is a good rival to him
Personally I liked light’s character better but there was no better antagonist to him than L

On the line of solving impossible mysterious, In/Spectre presents cases where finding the truth to the mystery is secondary, and fabricating an acceptable (more so practical) truth through inference take priority in solving the mystery (to hide the supernatural causes).

The brilliance of L is that he deduced not the method like all the casual detectives do, but the character of the suspect through his actions. The character is unique, the technique isn't necessarily. That's why when everyone else got lost when light changed his tactics L pressed on. He knows he deals with something he doesn't know so he very wisely chooses to ignore it and focus on human psychology which he knows. That's why from one point onwards L was absolutely certain who kira is, just from a series of conversations.

I never thought about it that way maybe you are right. Batman can just get a quick glance and deduce that a bullet was fired back in time.

Oh man I hate L because of his "weirdness", to me it seems too forced for me to enjoy it... Also I agreed with Light's philosophy, but even if I didn't, I just don't like L's character.
i think the point of L's weirdness is that he isn't actually weird, he just acts like that to gauge a reaction from others haha
