I have discovered these Mississippi Kites, Here in Chickasha Oklahoma. Chickasha Rose Hill cemetery, has around 30 breading pairs. I do my morning workout here every morning and enjoy watching them.
They are very playful, like manuvering and racing each other, they fly low and fast past me.
I now have them in my trees above my house, and they talk to each other. They are magnificent.
In the mornings it goes like this: 1st. The cardinals, wake up and sing, 2nd. the blue jays, and then the Kites take flight.
This is the best my mornings offer, but have come to love them, flying here.

Thank you for the informative video. We have two Kites that live at our farm in rural Mississippi. We’ve always enjoyed watching them fly over our field. I always thought “there’s the hawk” but they are definitely kites. :)

Such a coincidence that you mentioned your trouble with pronouncing those words. Just today I had looked up this poem that I remember from childhood, "Amidst the mists and fiercest frosts with barest wrists and stoutest boasts, he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts." I enjoyed your video. I've seen a Mississippi kite twice lately in our yard. They're rare around here.

thanks for the information, we have a bunch of chickens and one by one they kept disappearing, until one day i saw a big familiar bird (a lot of them) so i kept researching and found out it was a kite. now loads of people are pleased to see kites. ( i hate kites). they took my poor little chickens and chicks.

I was walking down the street last spring and saw one of these on the electrical wires. Having never seen one before, I took and pic (not great) and got the Conservation Department to confirm it. I live in the middle of a small city in the middle of MO - this is not a bird we normally see. Took me very much by surprise.

Oh wow that's awesome! I understand where you are coming from for sure, these birds like to be in urban areas so it can be weird seeing them on wires and other man made things for the first time. Glad you were able to see them though!

About 3 years ago maybe 4 a pair appeared here in SC about 60 miles from the coast, on a small river Lynches river... inland about 8 miles outside of Florence SC I've lived here for 27 years. I'm an avid bird watcher and photographer. I started to pay close attention when I noticed the breeding nesting pair as the male fed the female ... Since that afternoon I've observed the return of 1 or more nesting pairs to my area. They are hear now showing up about 2 to 3 months ago.. it's early June 2024 now.

Wonderful video, thank you so much. This week the kites returned to my yard. This is the 3rd year they have nested at the top of my oldest pine tree. I have enjoyed them so much. I used to go see them at the park where they were communal and hanging out in some old oaks. I never thought that some would come to my yard. I live in the Houston/Cypress area suburbs. I wonder though if they are picking off the chimney swifts that call my chimney home.

You're so very welcome! It's my pleasure and that's so nice that you get to see them again!! Wow that's amazing, I bet the view of the nest is stunning. Yeah I know what you mean, I've seen them in a lot of suburban places like soccer fields and even backyards too. And wow, I live near that area too! Specifically more closer to Katy but I'm very close lol. I wouldn't be surprised if they were able to pick off a couple chimney swifts but I feel like they would be hard to catch and the kites would rather catch insects. Either way, I hope the chimney swifts stay safe!

This is a near outskirts suburban town in the Southwest. Doing the further learning that they prefer insects it made more sense they hang around my home a lot. My yard is loaded with great sized insects and wasps. I neglected to call animal welfare wildlife rehab in my city to check on the Kite, but signs point to a recovery. Hoping so and also hope it decides to come back and set up shop in neighborhood again. I love their calls.

The range map you show at 1:52 is wrong, as I live in Gainesville, Florida, which is outside of the range indicated in that map, and Mississippi Kites are everywhere in season. Later in the video, at 4:28, you show a map that claims that the area of northern Florida where Gainesville is located is "range lost". That is a total lie. They never left (as far as I know) and are still here, in large numbers, in this allegedly "lost" territory. I see them every day from late April through autumn, and there is a local pair which nests near my house that roosts in a tree across the street daily in the late afternoon.
