My wife and I are 63 years old. We are selling our home in Maryland and moving to Kentucky at the end f the school year (my wife is a retiring teacher) to find property and start a homestead as you guys have done. I noticed that the children were thankful that their family remained intact. They know that is the most important gift. Family, what a wonderful, powerful gift from God.
No thanksgiving is ugly if you have family, even if your friends are strangers.
Ben, it would make me so happy if you NEVER replaced your Wonder Smoker with something from HD, WalMart, etc. Take a few photos of 'yours,' find THE spot you want to make the smoker permanent, get the appropriate fire cement for your materials, reassemble it for safety it in THE spot best suited for a smoker, and use the heck out of it PROUDLY! It should come in handy on HOT days when Megan needs OUT of the house to cook. And Megan, that meal was nothing short of magnificent! You 'do' know, don't you, that your future daughters-in-law will ALL hate you. You're showing your lads what 'can' come out of a kitchen and setting the standard HIGH for the young ladies to meet! One final note: Its great example for the boys watching Dad pitching in, and actively assisting in the food prep before and after its cooked....the young ladies will absolutely LOVE their father-in-law! I'm thankful for this channel and its wholesome content! : )

Dude, old refrigerators are a primo item for building a smoker here in Alaska. One of the very best smokers a ever had was built from an old junk refrigerator.

A $500 one wouldn't have been better. He probably should get a rack out of a rusted grill at the landfill...maybe a door off a bad oven, too...and mortar that puppy into a permanent item. Could easily do burgers and dogs on it...BBQ, too!

I was thinking that as well. I don't know where i saw it, but it was recently, someone made a simular item like this smoker. It also was made with cinder blocks. Alton Brown from the Food Channel made a cold smoker out of cardboard boxes. He even had a thermostat to watch the temp to keep the temp cool.
It’s a rocket stove, oven, kiln kind of good thing😁🤣 I would love those plans too.

Good on you for making do with what you had. We spatchcocked our turkey this year and smoked it in 2:45 Min hours. It was tender, juicy and awesome!

I love how nothing fazes you guys. Turkey doesn't fit in the oven, well let's build something to cook it in. Meg you did an incredible job of cooking all those side dishes from scratch on your tiny stove and in that small oven but everything came out well and the kids were certainly appreciative of it all judging by how they tucked in. And pineapple upside down cake as a surprise for Ben - how great.

It never gets old. We were 13 years on our first one acre homestead and now in our 15th year on our ten acre forever homestead and still every morning I wake up and can`t believe how blessed we are to be here. I am so very thankful. Hope it never grows old for you.

My son smoked one of his wild turkeys and the taste was delicious but it was just to tough. He has a large smoker and last years turkey was smoked and tender with a great smokey flavor, but it wasn't a wild one.
Thank God you live in a country where you can homestead and own your own property. Thank God He gives you strength for each new day. Thank God for those beautiful children that are growing up in the best life in the world. They will forever be blessed by what they are learning now. You guys are a family and have begun a new way of life, don't forget to include Jesus in the life you now have, for He is life.

I just wanted to say how much of a blessing it is to wake up and work for yourselves, rather than meaningless jobs you do for other people. To have your own property with acreage and privacy from people who can’t live like you do. I see it for you, even if you haven’t realized it yet.

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm sitting here, typing in our farm kitchen, next to a toasty kitchen wood stove. It is sharply cold outside this New Hampshire day. Snow storms are on the way. We have been living with primer on the walls, since 2016. Our painter, Shane, has just finished the second coat of paint on the walls and ceilings of the back bedrooms, central hallway and bath. Next week he will begin the cathedral ceiling of our farm cottage living room/kitchen. This project has taken three years to make happen, since we built the house. Are you listening?? Jim & I are grateful to be building our dream home in the woods of the family farm. We started when I was 66 and he was 70. We have been roughing it, off and on though the build. and that makes it all the sweeter! You are young and brave and will go far to make your dreams happen. The JOURNEY is the magic....
There's nothing wrong with humble settings. All the possessions we acquire in this life cannot be compared with the invisible treasures of the heart. Leave the smoker up, you cant smoke fish in so you won't smell up the camper. Maybe even sour dough bread. Love how your plan came together.
