I shared with a young mother in our church yesterday that about 30 years ago after a hurricane came through and temporarily changed our ‘normal’ drastically, how we coped. I will always consider this event as one of the greatest blessings in my life. We had no electricity and no school for 2 weeks. We had such a wonderfully sweet time. There was nothing to constantly demand our (other than survival) time. My two children (ages 6 and 13) and I played games, read, I taught them a couple of card games, and we talked and talked and talked some more. When it was announced that school would resume and the power came back on I was very sad. I think it was then that I realized that time is so very fleeting with our young ones and that we’d better make the most of it. I think that experience made me a better mama to my two. My son and daughter both have grown up and live live 200 and 600 miles away and I’m so very happy we had those two special weeks when the world just sort of paused and gave me a chance to look at my blessings. So now that another generation of young parents is being given a pause, I pray that they’ll see what they have right in front of them and make some memories that will last a lifetime for them-parents and kids. BTW, my son called me today and we talked about those couple of weeks. He has no children but said he hopes today’s parents will take the time to teach their kids during their inconvenient, unplanned school break things about life that we taught him. My boy still makes this mama’s heart smile. ♥️. Be well. God bless.

Hi from Italy, from the red zone. We are locked up at home for 2 weeks now. Two things I can tell you that makes it less hard.
    1) in October I had this strong wish to learn pressure canning, so my pantry helps us to resist going to the supermarket where you can meet sic people without mask
    2) everybody needs a sort of quiet time. As you said reading, studying just to avoid unnecessary fights in family.

During WWII, they were called "Victory Gardens", and we grew anything we could, in any available container. Or, as mentioned in the video, tear up some of that useless lawn & plant food!
Megan mentioned splitting a bag of potting soil: Also large, empty pet food bags can be recycled the same way. Fill the bag with soil, add a little duct tape over the open end and presto!, a new planter is made. Cut open the side and start planting. They won't last forever, but they should provide for one season's growth. Old plastic coffee cans also work great for individual plants, or several small plants in each. You can grow 4-6 radishes, or 2-3 carrots, etc., in each one, and they're easy to move around, if needed. (Poke some holes in the bottom for drainage, of course).
With a little imagination, you'll be surprised at how much food you can produce, even in an apartment!

Absolutely great advice. There are so many different options for getting through this. I live in Ohio, we do have an open air farmer's market. Plus we also have many local farmers in the area. I made sure to get flour and yeast for making homemade bread. My husband and I had already discussed filling the freezers from income tax return before all of this occurred. We do this yearly. I buy meats in bulk and repackage for meals. Stay safe, stay healthy everyone. Much love from OHIO ❤️❣️❣️❤️

Being over busy running around everywhere is just exhausting anyway. I am a homebody. Always have been. I love reading and I used to crochet and embroider before I developed arthritis. He also gave us a brain to use wisely. So falling for fear and panic is never a good idea as it freezes your brains ability to use it as God designed it. So use it to learn and study the current situation and look towards other countries that are already further along and therefor often more experienced and learn from them what you can do to keep yourselves as safe as possible. So He can see that we use and appreciate the tools He gave us.

"And Zeus appeared and said: Put your shoulder to the wheel, and I will do the rest".
God gave us a brain to know how to care for ourselves, and the fear reflex to understand when something is legitimately dangerous. "The man who is totally fearless, is a mindless fool".
If you exercise reasonable precautions, THEN trust God to cover the rest, you may be OK. Of course, you might turn out to be one of those HE picks to take away. All a person can do is use some common sense, and hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
That will improve your survival odds in any situation.

I live in an apartment in town, dont have a balcony, but huge south-facing windows with a railing. I have attached some baskets on the outside and put pots with tomatoes and peppers in them each summer. And a window box with herbs. You can plant and grow food everywhere. (my grandpa told me how they grew tobacco in the eaves gutter during WW II, i think that takes it a bit too far :D )

I didn’t really understand the grow your own food thing until today when I had to stop at the store for prescriptions and saw how bare the shelves were. We’ve always had a small garden, but this year it’s looking different. We plan to get some cool weather crops in the ground this week if possible. It’s just my 33-year old daughter and me (I’m 59 and suffer from an invisible but chronic illness plus I’m a widow), but over dinner we talked about expanding our garden, perhaps turning some flower gardens into vegetable growing space or even killing off more grass on our small suburban lot to grow food. Fortunately, we’ve always cooked from scratch, so we’re going to eat a lot of soup with beans and a little meat; we were able to get the ingredients we need for now. It’ll be a long while before we have much produce from the garden as we’re in the chilly north, but hopefully our cool weather crops will grow.
Appreciated your pep talk! You had some great ideas. We always have more than enough to keep us busy, so we won’t be bored or unproductive.

I just moved to northern Colorado from Montana. I adore container gardening. Right now I have growing green onions, leeks, basil and potatoes. Last year in my apartment I grew peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, corn, oregano, thyme and basil. I harvested potatoes and corn from my living room in December and tomatoes in January. It keeps me sane when I see a snow storm bring 10 inches and I’m watering my “garden”..

Very level headed advice! Very calm, matter of fact. My first homestead book was Encyclopedia for Country living. I had it right next to me as I butchered my first chicken. The cookbook idea was fabulous as well. Since our governor just closed all restaurants for 2 weeks, there will be a forced learning curve. My first cookbook was Better Homes and Gardens. It is so used, pages stuck together from some batter at one time.

It's interesting to watch this video from 3 years down the road, actually almost 4 years--we're breathing down the neck of 2024!
I appreciate a lot of things you mentioned, and everything you say is true: take this time to learn about new things, spend time with your family, and I would add to enjoy a moment of slowing down and breathing deep to smell the roses. Or whatever, but slowing down!
Ben, your point about checking on your neighbors and seeing if they need anything is so apt. I'm 73, and live a lot like you folks do--growing a garden, preserving what I can, cook pretty much everything from scratch. The one thing I think we found out through the pandemic is that isolation is brutal, and older people were particularly hard hit by a loss of friends, so one thing that meant so much through that hard time was just renewing the community ties, by actually stopping in and saying, "Hey" to our neighbors. I tried to do that with the older community members near me, and really appreciated when others checked in on me.
You hit the nail on the mark too, by saying things didn't change too much for you, as I and many rural folks found that true, I think. Chickens still need to get fed, pigs need to be moved, and if something needs fixing, it's probably gonna have to get fixed, one way or another.
Thank you for shining a light during a dark time for many--it did in fact get better, though life is different, as it always is after a major event like the Spanish Flu or Covid, or a World War, or whatever. Hopefully, we've learned new skills and can utilize them, and have become better friends and neighbors.

May our Father in Heaven provide many blessings to your family and loved ones.
Your family has been my inspiration since i first ran into your channel about a year and a half? ago, and i have been watching your journey since. It is so comforting watching your family living the way you do, a dream of mine for most of my entire life.
Ill tell you, any time im depressed or my mood just isnt right, your optimism, spunk, humor, smiles, encouragement (the list goes on), ALWAYS forces me to smile, not just on my face, but in my heart and soul. :)
I'm not one to cover things up woth powdered sugar, but sometimes watching your vlogs jerks me around in a very emotional way. Wishing so hard, for soooo long, to be self sufficient, very similar to your own lifestyle.
You both remind me eerily of my wife and myself, And how your dreams and aspirations (and in some very stramge ways, personalities) almost perfectly mirror ours, and im sure many others in this world. You guys are truly heros in a way that keeps us encouraged with your optimism, pushing us in continuing toward reaching our goals.
Meg, keep your smile and fervent love for helping others shining through to the world, your hard work, family dedication and cheerfulness affects others above and beyond even your own understanding. Our extended family (the earths population) needs it in these times more than ever. You are blessed to have the husband and even more important, best friend that you do, to roll down the river right along with you, with equal encouragement, support, and a sacred wholesomeness to your loving relationship. He is beyond blessed, and far more than deserving to have of a wife of your spirit. I intend to, and hopefully soon, WILL be purchasing soap products from you, to support in consideration your triumphs and tribulations of your homesteading journey, and as a lovely gift to my wife, who loves natural soaps and apothacary thingy-ma-jiggers.
Ben, your are amazing. You give me confidence in my self, and your hard works, talents, and outook on life, keeps me sane, in an insane world "lol". You have a calmness and peace about you, that is very apparent, and very inspirational. You act as kind-of my "time to chill out medicine", when things in my life just arent looking as peachy-keen as they probably could be, i just remember you. I used to fight with anger problems for most my life, and a peacfull, content, (& might i add sometimes humorously quirky)(no offense at all) demeanor always seem to force a smile on my face, calm me down, and causes me to have a bit of self reflection time, and understand how im handeling certain situations, and what i can do, in the name of peace, love and goodness, to properly handel those times of trials. I will most definitly be attempting to contact you hopefully sooner than later, and just as with your better half, be supporting your family, by getting my hands on one of your awesome custom hand-made knifes. (For myself, my lovely wife gets the soap :)
You both are doing an outstanding job raising your children with very valuble morals and ethics, i commend the both of you, and always will have your family tight in my heart, and, if i keep working hard enough, maybe someday, i could be living the dreams of my life too.
Ben & Meg Hollar (& family), i pray many more blessings to come for all of you, keep working hard, thank you for your wholesomeness and inspiration, and forever from the bottom of our hearts to yours, WE LOVE YOU

Still had some grocery shopping I had to do, just motivates me further to lessen my dependence on the food industry system.

We shop weekly at the farmers market for all our meat needs and the seasonal vegetables we don't grow. We are in the suburbs of Austin, Texas, and although we could have 6 chickens, it is more cost effective for the two of us to buy at the farmers market or at the local co-op (which sells one of the market farmers' eggs). We cook mostly from scratch and often make our on bread items -- last week I made English muffins. So good and so easy. Today I made a recipe I saw on the today show and only had to buy a fennel bulb from the market. All the other ingredients came from our garden or from our bulk pantry (peas). Went to the store today and many of the shelves were empty. I found the items I needed as they weren't really essentials for others. Very little of our food comes in a box or can. Thanks for your inspiration channel. Joy Giles

I am sorry about your rooster and the chicks being attacked, but your hen house looks good.
