      Riding through floods is quite common where I live on the mid Wales border, It floods here at least twice a year, I can safely say that my BMW GS is very capable of travelling through nearly two feet of water in complete confidence due to its high snorkel, so if you have purchased a GS and come across a flooded road, Go for it like Freddie, just don't follow a vehicle into it as you may have to stop, that's when the problems start,...OAP Wales UK.

    I love your combination of enthusiasm and naivety Freddie, venturing into the unknown, whether it's North Africa with only a bank card, or Suffolk with improper trousers. Maybe just a touch less throttle next time, your jeans will still be soaked, but your face will likely stay dry. And the real trick of course , is to let the other guy go first, so you can see how deep it really is.
    As for the Ferrari, it's a Mondial, the successor to the GT4 from your "Picking up a Ducati" video. A rather lovely 2+2 you can take your friends (as long as two of them are tiny) out for a blast in. Mind you, a Lotus Esprit would be the far better car for those flooded roads, well James Bond's submersible one would anyway.

    As someone born in the early 80s and as an eventual teenager who could drive in the 90s, I can attest that there were a few motorcycle shops like this where I grew up in SE Texas; Beaumont and South Houston specifically. • @fallinginthed33p
      @fallinginthed33p ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There's an infamous road in the UK that gets flooded periodically. It has a sign showing that cars shouldn't go through when it's flooded. Most out of towners barrel right through and destroy their engines by hydrolocking in deep water. On the other hand, on a bike, just make sure the water level doesn't reach your air intake. Don't slow down too much and never stop, to prevent water from entering the exhaust.

    • @Alex-mj5dv
      @Alex-mj5dv ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Possibly - but if you lose momentum and have to put your foot down .. well, trench foot awaits you! Part of the lovely nuances of biking! But yes - a steady, consistent speed is required. In cars and vans, most people go in far too quickly and the resulting bow wave is what cuts the engine out.. it’s rarely due to water entering the exhaust.

    • @nockianlifter661
      @nockianlifter661 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@FreddieDobbs If you’d got water in your air box you’d have been in big trouble. Slow and steady through water. Cause as little wake as possible. The additional back pressure in the exhaust system just reduces power it won’t cause any harm.

    Water hides sticks and branches and bricks etc that might have been swept into the road. Less speed is a good idea, with your legs up out of the way you’ll have little control over the bike if it ran along a two inch thick branch at forty five degrees. And if you do bin it you’ll hydrolock the engine.

    The problem with deep water is that you have no clue what has been washed onto the road under water. See the recent Rufford Ford videos where a massive tractor and trailer dragged out two large concrete barriers washed into the road. Well done for surviving that though and great to see you out on the Bonneville again.

    Going through flooded roads, keep your speed down, less chance of electrics getting wet - it's still a British bike! And you won't get so wet your self. The bike will get through - its not about the exhausts getting flooded - they will always push the gases out, just worry about the electrics and you getting wet... and also - worry about your chain getting oil washed out and needing maintenance afterwards.

    Loved this, Freddie. I once did a 10 hour ride from New Mexico to Breckenridge, Colorado in a March monsoon. It rained the ENTIRE WAY and included ski mountains and river crossings with water well above my ankles.
    To add to the fun, my wife was on the back and it was a brand new BMW R 1250 RT. It got bitter cold in the mountains. But there were a few good things I took from the trip…
    I learned that the bike is a lot better than I thought - it never once felt unstable. I also learned that good rain gear is the difference between a hospital trip and making the entire trip. (Albeit cold and irritated with the buddy that talked you into it).

    Short story for you Freddie on the problems of water on the road. Back in 1983 I was riding my Z650 in very heavy rain behind a car on a major highway in Australia. Because it was night time and pouring rain I didn't even see the pot hole that I hit. But I smashed into this HUGE pot hole and it ripped the handle bars our of my hands and threw me forward. I was literally holding onto my fairing praying the bike would stay upright at about 130kmh. I had to, very carefully, reach back to the dials and pull myself back without touching the handlebars until I was far enough back to take hold of the handlebars again. I travelled at least a hundred meters with no hands on the handlebars.
    Anyway, a little further along there was a turn in the road and since the rain was so heavy and the road so slippery I decided to slow down quite a bit for the turn. When I pulled on the front brake the lever came right back to the handlebar with no effect!! Now I was doing 130kmh coming up to a fairly sharp turn in pouring rain on a very slippery road with NO BRAKES!!!! I just had to lay the bike over and pray the wheels would stick. Very worrying!!!
    Anyway, I got around the corner and kept pumping the front brake lever until there was at least a little resistance but I had less than 20% braking power and I had no idea why. I rode on in the storm and finally got home. I only had about another 100kms to go with the bad brakes. I got home close to 10pm from a 450km ride through numerous thunderstorms so I just went to bed. In the morning I checked my bike. What had happened was the pot hole had jarred the front brake assembly so hard that the actual disk had been ejected from the brake housing and the 20% braking I had was the piston from the brake on the disk. Of course, where I was in my home town, there was no new disk available. So on the Sunday afternoon I had to ride back the 450kms to where I was living with pretty much no front brake because it was damaging the disk every time I used it.
    That's how dangerous water on the road is! LOL!

    Thanks for showing us this wonderful place! I have ridden in a flood like that but because it was raining I was in full rain gear.
    Don’t listen to any naysayers. I love that jacket! It is not something I would wear but I appreciate that you do.

    Fantastic bike 'museum' where all the exhibits are for sale! I must get down there someday (preferably AFTER the floods have subsided).

    Well done that man!👍 Who needs an Adventure bike.😂 I've been through a few quite deep floods lately but I was on a dirt bike with much higher air intake and well protected electrics. I don't think I would have tackled that on my Street Scrambler as the air intake looks pretty low down. The biggest danger with driving through a flood is you can't see whats on the road, maybe a rock, a brick or maybe a submerged branch etc which will have you off. Ask me how I know😡. I reckon the mud left on the road when the flood subsides will be more dangerous than the flood itself and will catch people out.

    The Suzuki GT750 used to be known as the "Water Buffalo". It's a water cooled, 3 cylinder 2 stroke. I knew a guy who had one. Cool bikes, great exhaust note!
