Lagi without underwater combat is really not the same. Instead of fun attacks he just spams massive AOE lightning everywhere, completely losing the aforementioned ebb and flow he used to have. I honestly think that the wirebugs offer a good way of handling underwater combat so I hope they bring it back someday

Tri and 3U mastered making you feel like these monsters were dangerous and mighty. Jhen Mohran jumped over the boat, in slow motion, roaring the whole time, unveiling the scope of what you face. Caedus barely registered you as a threat til you finally hurt it enough, then vocals kicked in during the actual confrontation, letting you know this was serious now. Freaking Miralis had the most suffocating music, not in loudness or being too much, but by being insanely epic and pressing.

I remember I did most of the online quests long before I even saw Lagiacrus offline. i wish the series experimented more like back in those days
verticality added, new tools to use, more monster designs (monsters like agnaktor, that swims underground),
while i appreciate that the 4th gen did to the series with monster variety and new weapons, it removed a lot of the ambience that the series had during those game and replaced it with the color orange and a steep angle

That took me back way back when I didn't even know what a Fatalis was. Tri was my childhood and debut as a rookie. Never will I forget the first time swimming in the blue waters, watching the Epioth's gracefully swim around, before one was being torn apart by a Lagiacrus' jaws. Lagiacrus was my teacher as Nargacuga or Gore Magala is for others.
That thing had given me nightmares when I first saw it and I immediately fled the area. And I had a blast when I was finally strong enough to take it on. It was even my go to armor all the way through Tri, mixing the low and high rank armor sets. In 3U I was always seen in the armor of one of the three Lagias.
Seeing Mizutsune again and how they handled a huge leviathal like Almudron so well is giving me hope for a grand return. Fingers are crossed that he might rise out of the sea once more.
On a completely different note, I love the choice of music.

Lagiacrus' theme, to this day, is still one of the best ones for me with its sheer bombast, and like the mosnter itself, perfectly encapsulates a fraught and perilous fight at sea.

It's not necessarily my favourite monster to hunt, though it's very fun.

I think Lagiacrus would best fit in MH6 with the revamped return of underwater combat. It's my favorite monster (Abyssal specifically) and I just can't stand seeing it in a fully landlocked setting. I also wouldn't mind all that much if they did the Somnacanth method of having it "pseudo-swim" through shallow water. In any case, fantastic video! I loved the discussion on cultural influences.

I kind if wish they had doubled down on underwater combat
I get why they didn't, double the work for something most players dont like, but games need to trow curveballs from time to time so the player doesn't get to confortable resting on his laurels and underwater combat fills that role by fliping the table changing the rules making you relearn everything you took for granted like it's your first hunt again

Even though the Lagiacrus is meant to be an underwater fight due to its design and behaviour, I’ll still be a firm believer in bringing him back for Sunbreak meanly out of fan service but also, like you pointed out, the fact that Rise was able to bring back leviathans and honestly make them fun even without underwater. Basically, I am on huge amounts of copium for the return of my favourite monster in the whole series!

It’s said that you never forget your first. Tri was my introduction to the series, and seeing this gorgeous beast emblazoned on the cover was what convinced me to try it, out of all the dusty games my friend had in his garage. I didn’t expect the game to hook me so quickly, and ever since then I’ve kept up with the series even if I didn’t have the means to play newer entries until World. As such, Lagiacrus was *the* face of my Monster Hunter experience. Though I developed deeper rivalries with other (more troublesome) monsters, Lagiacrus remained the closest to my heart. As you broke down in the video (in a way I’ve had trouble articulating), its design is simply fantastic and it really spoke to my childhood love of Godzilla as well, this colossal sea beast with glowing spines that commands fear and respect. Even removed from the franchise as a whole, the design has the strength to stand on its own legs. I’ll continue to bang the drum for Lagiacrus’s return, even if underwater combat (which I never found that bothersome) seems unlikely to ever return. Thank you for the video, and I’ll be sure to share it with my friends.

Underwater combat should make a return but instead locking the hunters to the ocean floor just like when hunting on land. This will allow the combat to be generally similar during on land while still allowing aquatic monsters to utilize their full moves. In a way it would make fighting a Lagiacrus in water similar to fighting a Rathalos on land, with Lagiacrus being able to "fly" by swimming while the hunter is on the ground.

  • @TheFearsomeRat
    @TheFearsomeRat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Lagiacrus was the monster that got me into the series, with Tri, seeing Lagicrus go from Lord of the Sea to Lord of the Mediocre was like getting punched in the gut, I remember back in Tri it took me well over 30 attempts a months to finally best Lagiacrus,
in Generations I beat Lagiacrus on the first attempt with no real challenge, and while part of it could be attributed to how much I had improved from Tri and 4 Ultimate, it also shows just how badly Capcom De-toothed Lagiacrus by Landlocking the Leviathans that had previously been able to go underwater and be fought on their home turf,
Lagiacrus was also the first monster that forced me to change strategies, swapping from the Lance to the Great Sword and actual get better armor, as my gear up until Lagiacrus was fairly static with very little in the way of upgrades or improvements.

This feels a bit speculative. Lagiacrus resembles a Crocodilian, as well as an Plesiosaur, famous aquatic Animals.
Furthermore his Electricity might be related to Electric Eels, you can see a potential Reference in the Shape of its Tail.
His Element is likely choosen to give him an Edge over his strongest Rival underwather the Plesioth, who is weak to thunder, and maybe even Ceadeus who could easily overpower the Leviathan but might be disscoraged in trying after a strong Discarge.
Oh yeah you make a Reference to some of that later, sorry.

I’ve always liked how different each game is. If I want water combat, I got 3U. If I want to play a fast paced, movement-oriented game, I have rise. If I want to suffer with a smile, I have FU. Each game has this feel that no other version really recreates and it makes each that much more special. If they ever bring back underwater combat, I hope it’s so different from tri that they keep their charm. I never want to be deterred from another game solely because one game has “better gameplay.”
A similar experience can go for having gore magala in a game. It’s fine in G and GU since it’s supposed to have the all as a celebration, but I feel the magic of Gore and its story should be relegated to 4th gen. All the fanboys can shove it and shut it. If Gore is to return, it should be a new monster filling a similar role or Gore has its own side story since it’s not just gore that’s has to come, Frenzy has to come, too. Only then will I accept it. All I can say is that blindly adding in a feature can ruin the experience by making it less special. All the mechanics that made something good or memorable could end up missing or being not as enjoyable as nostalgia had originally said. In conclusion, Fuck Gore Magala and every person who spams comments about it being added in an update like a child. Zinogre and valstrax fans were less annoying. Thank you
