  • In this video I am building the Center Channel Speaker for use in my home theatre to match the front left and right channels from a previous build (see link to the playlist below). This video will be part of a larger project, the 'Home Theatre Build'.

    The best port placement in my opinion. Close to the end. My humble suggestion : 3 inches longer and the inside port tapered to the middle. I tried it using two dual cone speakers 4 ohms each wired in series. Good job sir!!! 👍💐👍🇵🇭

    I have found that plastic terminals are almost in all cases a source of air leaks. So I always mount terminal first and apply havy glue from inside. This prevents leaks. Additionally I use gaskets made from tiny foam between speakers and box to prevent leaks at front baffle.

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the drivers and the terminal cup came supplied with good gaskets.

    You should chamfer at 45° the backside of the front panel where the speakers are mounted. Otherwise, the thick panel will block waves behind the speaker and effectively change its TS parameters.

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The baffle is not that thick. Chamefering the back is not practical in this case.

    You didn't make separate chambers for the woofer which you should or both driver interfere with each others air pressure

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, this is not the case. The drivers work in unison and in phase with the enclosure volume double that of one woofer. Each plays the same frequencies. If this were two fiffrent drivers, then yes, separate volumes are required since their responses are different and will then interfere with each other.

    🙋🏻‍♂️mr.soundblab I have a question here. First Thank you for the plans, content, and answering questions. I just built your 3 way floor standing speakers for my front left and right. Now looking into a center channel. I was wondering if you could give me some recommendations on a center to match those 3 way floor standers. Size is a concern and was thinking of just using the fountex and tweeters to make a small cabinet, any thoughts?

    Nice looking speaker and great vide, but...Horizontal MTM's with 2-way alignment have subpar lateral dispersion characteristics.
    If the speaker is intended for listening +/-15 degrees, great. Otherwise, you will have combing in the frequency response beyond that listening bubble.
    There other ways to mitigate these detrimental characteristics in Vance Dickason's Loudspeaker Design Cookbook.

    • @shaolin95
      @shaolin95 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would argue that is bad either way because even on axis, what you hear is a combination of the on axis and off axis response

    I have a random question. Someone stole my center channel from storage. Until I get the money I'd like to use two rears as my center. Is there a way I can wire them in series or parallel so that one would act as the left and one would act as the right?
    Sorry if it's a stupid question, I'm pretty new to this stuff.
    Thanks!

    • @chrislmcnair
      @chrislmcnair ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm starting to realize that this question was not a very good one. For some reason I was thinking that the center still somewhat separated the left and right sounds. But through more research it seems as if it is about 50/50 from left and right at all times and it just sends at a different frequency so that audio will be more prominent, correct?
      I ended up just running my two small rears in series as my center and turning the volume up on them. Not perfect but, it seems to work okay for now.
      Thanks!

    • @SoundBlab

      It can't replace left and right speakers on its own, but can be used in a stereo pair as left and right speakers if you use them vertically. So, short answer is, no.

      @SoundBlab you're awesome, thank you so much for responding. Would it be possible for me to email you or something I'm just starting out in the hobby and just recently built my first 2way Bookshelf speakers thanks to some courses I took from AudioJudment on TH-cam. I just don't know how to go about measuring frequencies when it comes to odd speaker types (several woofers or other drivers), I want to learn to build all speaker types so I can build a home theater but I'm really clueless on the process for measuring all the frequencies for something like a center channel with several woofers of the same type and one tweeter. Im aware of the far field for the tweeter and far field + near field for the woofer on a Bookshelf 2way, but not for s center channel. Also I know we have to account for acoustical offset, this I learned to deduce using xsim with the frequency responses of the tweeter and woofer and by additional importing the frequency response of the drivers in parallel, then you change the acoustical offset of the woofer until the two graphs look about identical that's the offset.... but how do you go about this when it's a center channel ? I know that was a lot, I'm sorry, I'm really lost and I've been searching all over TH-cam but no tutorials 😢

  • @AXington

    If I were to do a build of this, but modify the box dimensions, so it's longer but more shallow but retains the same volume, would that work well? Basically I need a center with dimensions closer to a soundbar, doesn't have to be full on soundbar, but closer due to the dimensions of my room.

    • @SoundBlab
      @SoundBlab  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the modelled crossover to work right, the size and shape of the baffle or front panel needs to remain the same. If you change it the frequency response will be off. Short answer is, no.
