A TRIANGLE IS A POLYGON
WITH THREE EDGES AND THREE VERTICES
TAKE THE BASE TIMES THE HEIGHT, CUT THAT IN HALF
TO FIND THE AREA OF THE SURFACES

WE’RE A LITTLE BIT CONCERNED

WHICHEVER TOM OR DICK I MIGHT PICK
THE CENTER OF THE TRIANGLE IS LIL' OL' ME!

ACTUALLY A TRIANGLE HAS MULTIPLE CENTERS!
THIS TRIANGLE’S SCALENE.

THAT’S ASTUTE. SO I NEED TO DECIDE
WHICH MAN’S MORE ACUTE!

HERE’S PYTHAGORAS’ THEOREM...
Rebecca
WILL THIS HELP ME CHOOSE?
IF NOT, I’LL BE SWINGING FROM A HYPOTENOOSE!
Male Dancers
LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT THIS LINE BISECTS
Rebecca
IS THAT SPELLED BIS-E-X?!

I NEED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN MEN
BUT UNTIL THEN
THE CENTER OF THE TRIANGLE IS LIL’ OL’ ME!
IS THIS A TRIANGLE?
Male Dancers
NO, THAT’S A SHOE
Rebecca
IS THIS A TRIANGLE?
Male Dancers
NO, THAT’S YOU.
Rebecca
SO I’M A TRIANGLE?
Male Dancers
WHAT? NO.

We are sincerely worried about you.

Male Dancers
THIS ANGLE’S RIGHT.
Rebecca
WHICH ANGLE’S RIGHT?
Male Dancers
NO, NOT RIGHT LIKE CORRECT.
Rebecca
OOOH, ARE YOU ERECT?!
Male Dancers
NO, 90 DEGREES.
Rebecca
THAT’S REALLY ERECT!
THE MATH OF LOVE TRIANGLES--
IS SUPER DUPER FUN!

WE’RE TIRED OF ALL YOUR TANGENTS
THAT’S ALSO A TRIANGLE PUN.

I love that since this takes place in her head, she’d have to KNOW every single triangle fact the men bring up through out the video, but CHOOSES to portray herself as a ditz, even just in her own mind. That alone brings up an interesting detail about Season 2 Rebecca’s internalized misogyny.
I don't think it's necessarily internalised misogyny but actually self loathing
I don't think it's internalized mysogyny I think that its the whole "oh im an ingenue" thing and partly that she has no confidence in herself and has a lot of self hatred. If you watch to the end of s2-beggining of s3 you start to learn about her BPD, which I think this is closer to
I mean she went to Harward so she can't be dumb

imagine leaving a comment on a funny song to try to force a discussion about "internalized misogyny," something which has never been empirically proven to be a real thing.
I can't not think about the fact that rebecca Imagined like 20 gay geometry professors to flirt with
Hey. As a socially anxious, gay nerd, I totally see the appeal of that!!
It makes it just (this) much funnier that none of the men in her own fantasy are attracted to her

@@Allison_Hart if you recall the episode, this song is between her meeting with a polyamourous trio and her appointment with Dr Akopian, none of whom she was listening to ("I wasn't really listening" in this song) - Rebecca wanted to believe she could be in relationships with both of these men, NEITHER of whom were offering her a relationship 🤷🏻♂️ Also the professors all being gay = the men she was interested in were neither available nor interested in her
She went to Harvard and yale, she knows her triangles
@@Allison_Hart It's absolutely an homage to Marilyn with the clothing choice and jaunty toon.
@@Allison_Hart surely is on purpose, Marilyn is known for playing the dumb blonde on screen and writting poetry and marrying comunists in real life...
I love that, even in the fantasies she creates, Rebecca is rejected by men.
Dos Eggies Dos Eggies To me, it's symbolic of Rebecca's insecurities that are ever present even in her subconscious as is the choice of making the men in her fantasy gay. Essentially we're shown that Rebecca has issues of accepting reality as it is because of her insecurities but at the same time she has a difficult time accepting that someone could want to be her friend, lover etc. So what we've seen is her doing everything exaggeratedly believing that she has to in order to be accepted. What seems to happen is that this backfires which then causes Rebecca to use as "evidence" which perpetuates her issues. It's a nasty cycle. She also has the belief that she'll be happy with no more problems if she gets her fairy tale story that she's imagined in her head even though it's not true.
It's a very conscious choice of the writers of the show.
I think it has more to do with her insecurities and her fear (and belief) that all men in her life will eventually leave her or reject her, no matter how many men actually care for her 'irl'.
Rebecca wants men she cannot have. At the time this song occurs, neither Josh not Greg is very interested in her, yet she will not listen to Dr Akopian or the polyamourous trio she had just talked to. In this song she is remaining clueless and not listening to reason as in real life. And she knows that she always ends up being rejected by these men.
we are all of us rebecca bunch
Lady, we´re all gay.
If Rebecca was just having another fantasy, does this mean they sang an _imaginary_ number?

There's also shades of Carol Channing. Rachel Bloom is brilliant!
+3NU I was just saying (above) that this is Carol Channing, not Marilyn. Different voice, different persona. Carol put comedy before sex appeal (though she was certainly sexy, in an annoying way that Rachel can relate to).

I know, that's what makes it a pun. It has a double meaning. Also, I copied that lyric straight from the description so that's her spelling not mine.
In the "Boy Band Made Up Of Three Josh's" number there's another hanging reference too.
Yes. In this number, and this episode, the comedy just barely kept the pathos bearable. Which is one of the reasons I love this show. But there were some moments that were really genuinely upsetting.

If you think about it, the part "actually a triangle has multiple centers" could be the guys trying to tell her that she shouldn't be the only focus of the love triangle. There are also other people involved whose feelings should be considered.
And the pickpeeve wth most media "love triangles" that car too less about the other 2 sides having any meaningful good relationship, to might make it work ,or poly. Or interesting. Becaue good love triangles are actually engaging.

Not that I have *any* reason to believe the writers intended this, but "1,2,3,6,8,3" is actually the first few digits of one of Feller's coin-tossing constants, which you might use if you were trying to calculate the odds of getting the same result from three consecutive coin flips (yes, I'm a nerd...)
Well, Rachel Bloom IS a fricken' genius... I wouldn't put it past her!

That... sounds likely, since she's trying to decide between two men but believes them both to be equally reasonable choices.
Even better....Marilyn Monroe had a genius level IQ. She just played ditzy blonde really well.
JamesCPotter13 it was 148 so , really high
Which makes this number even more fitting, since Rebecca is brilliant but embodying Marilyn for her fantasy!
JamesCPotter13 i mean 148 is not genius, but it's pretty smart (ofc, IQ dosen't reflect your actual intellect only your potential)
It can reflect potential but I wouldn't say it flat out reflects potential. Never underestimate hard work and effort.
I'm just curious, 148 on which scale? Standard deviation of 15 or 24?
I suspect that all of you guys in the comment section do not really want to learn about triangles.
Goes to show you how many people actually miss the point of this show by diefying the same values and people Rebecca does lol.
What ? No !
I prefer Rebecca's spheres over her triangles
Vin Grier omg-
Well, to be fair, Rachel Bloom does a brilliant homage to Marilyn Monroe in a song that finds a way to make math somehow "sexy", and somehow even worked in a bit of "gallows humor", but also somehow comes off as "hot"! I mean, who'd have thunk you could do that, right? This show and the songs in it are simply amazing!
Watching this in context again, it occurred to me there is a reason for her playing so dumb in this song besides it being cute and funny. In real life, Rebecca's not listening to anyone, neither to the polyamourous trio she had just interviewed, nor Dr Akopian. She's oblivious to the fact that neither Josh nor Greg is offering her a relationship at this point, she is convinced she can be in a relationship with both of them, or that she needs to choose. Most importantly, she remains oblivious to what a triangle even is, seeing herself as the center. She's boy-crazy with men not even available to her, self-absorbed and clueless. That's why Rebecca acts this way in this number. 🙂
It shows self-awareness; this is her fantasy, after all. She's aware of what other people are telling her, but choosing both men sounds like the "sexy, swinging" choice. Hence, icon of innocent and ignorant sexuality, Marilyon Monroe. ;)
God I love this show
They looked so happy in the beggining when they were explaining triangles, and then they just looked crushed and dissapointed..
That's just being a math teacher
I'm gonna start referring to myself as "sexy little baby me".

By far the best song so far this season from the best episode so far of this season. Though this song is truly hilarious (maybe one of the funniest the show has done) It also perfectly shows how naive Rebecca is and how she chooses (not thinks) chooses to live her in complete denial and in a world that i think she deep down knows is not actually real but she does what's most convenient for her and how she ignores anyone who tells her different or questions her logic.
Every triangle is a love triangle if you love triangles.
Just started watching CRAZY EX GF on Netflix. I genuinely think this is easily the best women oriented comedy I've seen on tele to date. The musical numbers are simply superb - I was humming the very catchy "Sexy Getting Ready" song the other day. I've just realised her dress is blue because her iconic episode 1 dress is blue. THIS IS THE SHOW THAT KEEPS ON GIVING!
Something tells me that the real Marylin would have loved this show and interpretation of this song
Marilyn actually had an extremely high IQ and was known for her intellectual ability and was an insatiable reader. Ironic, due to Hollywood’s depiction of her (including this original number).

Maria Genelyn Loubel Velasco it's supposed to be a spoof of "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" in the movie "Gentleman Prefer Blondes" and Marilyn Monroe's character is supposed to be this dumb lol. Only difference is the color scheme (in the movie it was all pink)

The Goosinator!!!!!! Ah yes of course! That's why I'm so thrilled because of the exact things you have said! I just love this song's content because it's so Marilyn Monroe :)
And for 'Diamond's are a Girl's Bestfriend' there's this part where women in tutus would go to Marilyn holding up cut-out hearts... I guess it has something to do with season 2's opening ;)
sheshiechan I honestly just thought that the reason they are gay is so that the whole Marilyn Monroe façade would not work on them, sticking on their real intention as to provide information about triangles :3

if you think about it, when they go “this is bad, this is bad, we’re going to hell, this is bad” in Love Is Not A Game, it’s like how in Math of Love Triangles the professor backup dancers said stuff like “we’re a little bit concerned” - that’s her subconscious telling her that what she’s doing here is wrong, but she’s ignoring it to continue boosting up her ego by imagining that these two guys are competing over her, when neither of them have even expressed an interest in a relationship with her.

This is the best Crazy Ex-Girlfriend song in my opinion. Hilariously absurd, clever lyrics, super catchy, math puns. Anyone disagree? Because I’d love to hear other picks
I like how in the original song Marilyn sings about getting some benefit out of men and using them for her own gain, but in Rebecca's re-imagination it's about a complete ditz who can't do any math. Yet at the same time Rebecca herself would go over and beyond for men who used her and didn't give her much in return.
