"I blackmailed Valencia's boss so now i control when she teaches" is my favourite line in the show, it's so underrated. Like imagine you run a yoga studio and some random woman you've never met threatens to tell your wife about your affair or whatever unless you... let her do your job for you? Like that would have to be the wildest thing to happen in that guy's life.
@@lizanna6390 And it works so well that way, too. I somehow love it more than the original and that's saying something because Rose's Turn is one of my favourite showtunes.
The whole show is genius but I was especially impressed by the actress who plays Paula. I feel like you don't necessarily expect her to have such a powerful singing voice when you first see her but she nails every song. I love this song because it's somehow simultaneously funny, powerful and emotionally nuanced, one of the best of the show imo
The song is parodying "Rose's Turn" from the musical Gypsy. Rose was an overbearing stage mother who attempted to make stars out of her children, one of them fled. The other became a star in the Burlesque/Caberet scene. Rose, attempted to shoot Bobby, June's fiance (the daughter who fled, but became a star on her own) There was a hotel manager she pushed out of a window, she claimed self defence. And a lesbian occupent of the flat she owned flirted with her daughter, (the cabaret performer) and Rose shot her dead.
What's criminally underrated about this song and the show as a whole is that the side characs not only have their own lives but it represents what other films have been turning the bestfriend role into. Look at how obsessed Paula had turned into, it's as if she doesn't know what to do if Rebecca isn't gonna continue pursuing Josh anymore. This is the best reference on what future industries should produce when the bestfriend is involved-give them a story that actually has the main protagonist help THEM to show their friendship is actually equal
Paula is definitely a better parent to Rebecca than either of her actual parents are...but she's also clearly an enabler and helps exacerbate her mental health issues. The dichotomy of this show is amazing.
As far as I'm concerned this is Donna Lynn Chaplin's unofficial audition for Mama Rose. Side note: best lyric in this song is : "I created you! You lived in my womb...I mean...FIGURATIVELY!"
I just got Paula's view of this song. Paula did all of this stuff without Rebecca asking her to do it. She thought she was being a good friend. Hearing Rebecca say that she didn't want any of it made her feel like she was putting in more work into the relationship and that Rebecca didn't appreciate her. I mean, none of it's right, but that's what she thinks.
to be fair Rebecca asked Paula to break her backdoor just so she could justify breaking in to Josh house so I kind of agree with Paula here. Rebecca never asks Paula how she's doing she just talks about Josh. granted everything Paula does is creepy but Rebecca did ask for some of it
Paula is living vicariously thru Rebecca because her own life is a dead end. R. is Paula's avatar, like in Sim City. When Rebecca pulls the plug on the game Paula is once again faced with her own dead end life. That's where all the rage comes from. Its been building for 15 years ever since (off-script) her boyfriend knocked her up with the first kid and she had to drop out of college.
The third "after everything I've done for you" rlly shows this for me. The way it kind of explodes at the end into the "GOd will you're lies never ends" seems like she just got even angrier at the idea of the "that you didn't ask for" part. From her perspectve, she did all these things without Rebecca even having to ask her much, and Rebecca is refusing to accept that she asked Paula to do some of these things, hence the "lies".

I feel people is telling Rebecca all the time "i will not get into your mess", because she start asking you a bit and then you are just brainwashed doing her shit. And is that normal friendship requires already alot of work that "nobody told you to do", but people does and in normal relationships we appreciate that, we say thanks and then we return the favors (without being ask for). “I blackmailed Valencia’s boss so now I control when she teaches! That’s right-I make yoga class schedules! There’s no limit to where my reach is!” That’s not the kind of woman you want to piss off.
I love this song because it is beautiful and haunting and badass and I loved seeing Paula going all out on it, but I especially love how much *sense* it makes. All those impossible little moments which pushed Rebecca into the classic romcom moments that helped her shape her perfect love story were *actively made* by Paula. The fantasy Rebecca always dreamed of is truly a fantasy, nothing like that could ever happen naturally on its own. This song is so validating and helps to sell the idea the show is pushing towards, that true love is tough to obtain and a perfect story is not real, people have issues and relationships are not simple. This is so so good, I remember being completely smack-jawed when I first saw this song in the episode
Paula is super unpopular in most social media comment forums, so I just wanted to say that it's super exciting to see more people who love her. She's been especially fantastic this season.
silvertamagachi I love Paula! Sure, she's hugely flawed and has a mean streak, but she's so much fun! Paula is such a nuanced and complex character, Donna plays her brilliantly!

I kind of feel sorry for Rebecca. She was trying to be rational and resist being a creeper, but Paula trying to live vicariously through her pushed her down a dark path
Yeah both of them are at fault for issues and keep feeding off of each other’s needs. Paula states that she always wanted a daughter and now uses Rebecca for that, while also living single life through her and what she believes in romance. While she can be a voice of reason and push Rebecca to confront her own issues in a good way. often times I see Paula helping pick/set up bad things for Rebecca to do even more in the first season when Josh is the goal no matter what. It doesn’t mean Rebecca doesn’t push Paula to do things either nor does she establish clear boundaries with her as a friend heavily leaning into Paula’s desire to have at daughter-figure. Rebecca is just as bad at picking bad options by herself, seen when she doesn’t recognize what she’s doing with Valencia as wrong until the last moment or her impulsive nature when sleeping with the vegan guy but Paula is just another factor that doesn’t help because she’ll do anything for her friends. Edit; like season 2 ep 1 when Paula tries to stop and back out Rebecca becomes even worse by guilting and constantly dragging her back in. It’s unfair to say Paula isn’t at fault either because she never truly puts her foot down and says no to establish boundaries but Rebecca also is a problem by manipulating the love Paula has for her into getting what she wants. It wasn’t until the end of the ep when Paula set those boundaries that we can start to see growth of their characters
+Feraloidies Donna is a goddess. Seriously, when Lea Salonga somehow ISN'T singing the best song in an episode, you know something very special has happened.
kris lanc Kris, Lea is Josh's aunt who sings "One Indescribable Instant" in the season finale. She's a Broadway star -- has been Kim in Miss Saigon, Eponine in Les Mis 10th ann., Fantine in Les Mis 25th ann., Cinderella, Allegiance -- and was Jasmine and Mulan's singing voices. She also happens to be one of the most beautiful and adorable people in the world. She's perfection in human form, basically, and I have a Rebecca-Bunch-esque girl crush on her, which is why saying Donna's song was even better is possibly the highest compliment one could give.
I love Paula's entire arc, and her style of music. Something I truly love about this show is how every major character has it's own style of music when they sing, it's a great way of separating them and making them more unique
Donna's range snd talent is unfathomable. WHERE THE F IS HER EMMY. She nails every style from Disney Princess to Mama Rose and everything in between. WOW!!! 🥰🥰🥰
I’d love to see some of the conversations that Rebecca has without her imagining them as musical hits. I think this scene would hit hard if it was an actual monologue
This is so well written as a show and as a song, because it drops like twelve bombs about things that were questionable throughout. Show doesn’t shy away from explanations when it needs to. It even paints Rebecca as the one in the wrong, which she is, when most shows would continuously display her as the perfect character.
I just want to remind everyone that Rebecca did ask Paula to break her own backdoor so she could justify sneaking in to Josh house. that is completely illegal and wrong yes she had a good reason for doing it but still illegal and yes Paula did some creepy things but so has Rebecca and Rebecca never asks Paula how she's doing she just talks about Josh. that's what I like about the show no one is completely right everyone has a little bad to them just like life
I know this comment is super old but I just laughed out loud at you calling Rebecca's reason for wanting Paula to smash her door "a good reason". It was an absolutely terrible reason and I love Rebecca Nora Bunch.
The part where Becks says "that I didn't ask for" at the beginning is just so good, the difference between Paulas higher voice because she is singing and Becks normal speaking voice. Everything in this song is amazing
Paula's is more vocally impressive and reveals information that we didn't know, while we already knew everything that Rebecca did. However, I felt that Rebecca's was more dramatic in the moment with the confrontation that the past 2 episodes had been building towards it, while this didn't have that dramatic build-up from episode to episode. I also like the faster pace of Rebecca's. So.....both.
After watching through the whole series I feel comfortable saying Donna Lynne Champlin is the show's MVP. Like it's not enough that she has absolute powerhouse vocals and totally sells the character of Paula warts-and-all, but she's the comic timing and delivery are perfect, and she can act and sing in like 12 different styles and ace them all with seemingly zero effort. And you have to see the whole series to really see all that, but if there's one showcase of her talents, it's this song.
i have never seen the show, but this actress has so much presence. The dancing, which could feel awkward, feels motivated and angry and deliberate, accentuating the song rather than pulling the audience out. Her voice and power--not knowing anything else, I feel drawn in!
After thinking every dumb thing Paula encouraged would ruin Rebecca's progress and Grebecca, turns out that just Rebecca's delusion was more than enough
+CinnamonCari Well, that and Greg's insecurities yeah. I really want them to end up together, but they could both do with learning some lessons about relationships before it could work...
+Nicholas Hayes You're right. It's kind of hard picturing them together now. Will Greg be able to forget being sexually rejected for the third time? :(
Bloom said watching 'Sex and the City' in college did her a grave disservice because the ending taught her that 'Obsessing over a guy will eventually pay off'. If Bunch ends up with anyone I will be greatly surprised. When she says 'Bunch is like Walter White' I think she meant it. R.'s only going to spiral downward.
well it wouldn't be realistic for her to 'just get better' even on medication in her old life she was unfulfilled and I think just having rebecca just suddenly do a 180 isn't realistic..not that this show is exactly realistic but you get what i mean
+ImaginaryMdA I love how you're totally right that this is a villain song, but in the end she and Darryl are the only ones who are really there for Rebecca when she needs them . . . GOD this show is so complex and I love it.
Amelle Kyre Ha, unless you ask Gregbecca shippers. XD No, I think he's illustrated that he can be kinda selfish and manipulative (and commitment phobic). Definitely more of a ray of sunshine than anyone else on the show except maybe Darryl, but I like that none of them are perfect.
I just realized Rebecca is Paula's Josh.... not romantically......but I've noticed she and Trent aren't so different..... and he's basically male Rebecca.

Given how only 1% of the comments here seems to recognize Gypsy.... she can play her in the new movie version. (Make that happen, Hollywood.)
If that happens, I'm buying tickets to that revival.
The actress is obviously having so much fun & going all in without shame xD
the way she sings "screwing" is AMAZING 🤩
I get chills and the overwhelming desire to give her a standing ovation, no matter how many times I watch this video.
Lol Paula orchestrated the whole show !! damn lol
I love Donna Lynne's voice so much....
"Greg isn't the only one you're screwing" damn, I just caught that, and it's BRILLIANT
That voice, that energy! We are not worthy. Give this woman more roles Broadway!
0:56 is literally perfection
Her and Rachels Eyes just perfectly catches the deranged look of someone who’s done crazy shit and not look sorry for it
"Let's just say Greg isn't the only one you're screwing" Iconic (I´m still laughing, send help)
“That’s right, I make yoga class schedules now!” This line always kills me. Paula is amazing 🤩
I love the passive-agressiveness when she lists the things she's been doing behind the scenes. It's a great build up.
Paula, Rebecca and Josh’s facial expressions are the highlight of this show for me
This is literally just "Everythings Coming Up Roses" from gypsy but put into a tv show. This is the best thing ever.
Every time Donna Lynne Champlin sings, my heart soars. She has such a classic, full-bodied voice. 🥰
I keep coming back to this number and damn Donna Lynn is such a powerhouse
Kind of amazing how Paula basically admits to have orchestrated the events of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 1.
I love how Paula as mother-substitute acts a lot like Rebeccas real mother Naomi but with some characteristics inverted.
Netflix needs to bring this show back.
i have never seen the show, but this actress has so much presence. The dancing, which could feel awkward, feels motivated and angry and deliberate, accentuating the song rather than pulling the audience out. Her voice and power--not knowing anything else, I feel drawn in!
Is it just me or does paula always have the best songs/ maybe even the best voice out of the whole cast
wow, she can sing. if she didn't get awarded for it, she should have.
Wow, her range is just... wow!
The fact that she wrote ALL of the songs though 🔥
This is one of my favourite performances ever, her voice and how she nails the choreography just amazing x
Every one of Donna Lynn Champlin's songs, is my favorite song.
She's so amazing at singing, such an underrated character
Donna Lynne is a gift for humanity every single one of her numbers are show stoppers
2023 this still gives me chills
Paula was truly in her villain area
And you know, everybody loves a good villain
Rebecca's mother substitute is scarier than Rebecca's actual mother, and the bar for that was already high.
The vibrato and breath control throughout!!! I can’t even!!,
Wow, A villain song for Paula! Loved it though! :D
+ImaginaryMdA I love how you're totally right that this is a villain song, but in the end she and Darryl are the only ones who are really there for Rebecca when she needs them . . . GOD this show is so complex and I love it.
Let's not forget Rebecca realizing she was a villain too. So it all fits but it's so well done.
Amelle Kyre Everyone in this show is a villain
silvertamagachi I don't think so, Josh is most definitely not villian just sort oblivious
Amelle Kyre Ha, unless you ask Gregbecca shippers. XD No, I think he's illustrated that he can be kinda selfish and manipulative (and commitment phobic). Definitely more of a ray of sunshine than anyone else on the show except maybe Darryl, but I like that none of them are perfect.
who else is here after the reprise from tonight's episode? (so good!)
Crazy Ex Girlfriend is so underrated. It's amazing. Hilarious! And they can all nail any Broadway style. Love it!
This woman is a GODDESS. Love her voice.
Who came here after watching Rebecca's version of After Everything I've Done for You (That You Didn't Ask For)? :D
I can't be the only one back here listening to the original now.
I just realized Rebecca is Paula's Josh.... not romantically......but I've noticed she and Trent aren't so different..... and he's basically male Rebecca.
⭐️her singing the line “You lived in my womb” was funny because she kinda is like a parental figure for Rebeca.💗💕
This song overall was great and a lot of fun to listen to! 🎵She is great at singing! 🎶Not surprised she has done Broadway🎵
Oh my GOD, that woman can sing!
This will never NOT be my favorite CEG song. Especially for shower singing...
it took me a whole year to figure out this was a parody of “Rose’s Turn” from Gypsy and that makes this song so much better
I finally see the ressemblance to Rose's Turn!
I perform this to myself when I'm alone, dancing and all. An undiscovered musical genius I am.
This song actually shows how much Paula cares for Rebecca and how hurt she is .
She's bloody fantastic! She needs to sing more!
Paula is one of my favorite characters, and I'm always happy when I get to see her sing!
Chills...her voice is amazing, especially when she belts.
My favorite song in the entire series. Her voice is so POWERFUL I love it
